Forget the numbers or how many wheels are driven, it’s the way it feels, the tactility and mechanical precision of everything. You need to drive one to understand. So compared with the price of the Golf, RS3, M Cars, AMGs, Porsches, Teslas etc, the Type R is a bargain.

I'm absolutely shocked that you don't get a manual Golf r in the UK. I assumed with so many slobbish truck & suv drivers in North America we would be the last market to get the manual.
I know the Type R is very expensive, but I feel that it is such a complete package, amazing driving dynamics, great practicality, you can even use comfort mode if you want! I love the fact we now have a new M3 Touring, but I would take this Type R over that M3 Touring and use the change for something else 🌚❤️

Don't know why manual is not offered in Europe, but it is available in the US. Worth mentioning, because the way he mentioned I thought it was DSG only globally...
The Type R is just absolutely perfect.. clever Honda engineers have turned what was the FK8 which was a well machined car in every way as in mechanically perfect to mechanically perfect but a bit more on edge.. those chaps and ladies are very clever.. who wants an E SUV.. no thanks.. the dual axis front diff is such phenomenal..
Test drove a 2024 DSG Golf R on Monday. Absolutely loved it. As a manual car guy for 20 years, I found the DSG to be surprisingly enjoyable. I don't think I'll miss the manual in this vehicle.
Great video BUT DCC ADAPTIVE DAMPERS IS NOT STANDARD ON R 20 YEARS. Ease to assume it would be as it's essential for 'ring mode to work on the 'ring. But it's not.
This was a phenomenal review. Very well done. Only confirmed what I already suspected but this new Type R is incredible. Was between a few other cars but this thing is truly special and addresses all the issues I had with the FK8. Looking forward to getting one but right now there are so few in the states so prices are predictably ludicrous.
My personal problem and I'm not entirely sure why this is but the idea of spending almost 50k on a Honda Civic just escapes me. Is it my age, the image of the type r brand, I just can't imagine thinking 'right I have a budget of around 50k I'll go take a look at the Civic type r' I just can't see it ever happening and I know people say their great cars
Pay now or pay later at the shop. I own several Hondas…some nearly 20 years old…still not a drop of oil underneath them in the garage. This is why as fast as the Golf R or the RS3 are I still don’t trust their long term reliability. I would drive any of my high mileage(200-over 300k) Hondas across the country with zero worries. Volkswagen/Audi with the same mileage…not so much.
@@BigBear--Agreed. It’s a shame some people can’t get over the whole ‘it’s a Civic’ mentality. I just don’t get it. Wonderful machines. Owned an FN2 and now an FK8 and I can’t fault either.
@@Highlander1518Yep. Same, previous cars were a '98 Nissan Maxima, which was awesome (especially as a first car). I would probably still be driving it if it didn't get totalled after some moron blew his light and I t-boned him. Then a 2003 Acura CL Type-S, that I owned for 14 years with no real issues at over 270K+ miles, other than maintenance (only got rid of it cause I wanted something new, it was still running perfectly). Then a 2020 Civic Si Coupe...that I was planning on keeping, unfortunately some moron decided to plow into me from an oncoming lane and totalled it (also forcing me to loose partial hearing in my left ear, and damaging one of my shoulders). Which is when I got the '23 Type-R. I pray to god nothing happens to this one...though it was already kinda hit in the rear bumper while it was parked on the street in BKNY, now there's a minor clearcoat chip and a tiny dent in the rear bumper. Someone also hit the side of my front passenger side fender with their door in a parking lot, leaving a tiny dent. I would've murdered them if I saw it, or could find them. Anyway, for personal, family, or friends I would probably never get anything other than something from Honda (Acura), Toyota (Lexus), Mazda, and maybe Subaru. I might consider something from Hyundai, or Genesis...though there would have to be some very compelling reason, along with a compelling reason not to get something instead from the previously mentioned manufacturers. Also Nissan...but mainly either the Z or the GT-R...and Infiniti (though not sure what the hell they're doing these days).
Excellent review my friend. One question for you if’s posible. If you need to consider buy one of this car a new type R or golf R mk7.5-8 ? What is best long term car? Consider carbon accumulation, electrical issues, quality materials. Thanks in advance
Just out of curiosity, which one is quicker around a track? Not like I’m racing either one, but would be curious to know which car runs a track quicker.
I suppose driving them around Wales just for fun when it's dry, yes, the Honda still has it. But every day driving is not just about bearable suspension or an infotainment system a motoring journalist can get used to in half a day but things like having an automatic gearbox for the other 90% of driving (throw in more useable driver assistant features and cooled seats and a sunroof and a heated steering wheel and a bunch of other things the Type R doesn't have). Couple that with the huge performance advantage the Golf has on anything other than dry, grippy tarmac and I'd still pick the VW if it was my money. With the current crop, that gap has widened for me, not closed.
That's not what the Type R (or a hothatch) is for though. The Type Rs have excelled in driving dynamics and passable interiors (although this one is better than the golf in that regard too). The Golf is just another German boat, of which there are many to choose from, as it has no distinct identity. The only gap is in 0-60 times, which is for children at this point. Pinning an accelerator pedal means very little.
That's not what a hatchback is for? What the hell is it for then? Journalist reviews or occasional track session? What world do you live in where one can drop $45,000 on such a vehicle? The rest of us have to save up our pennies to have a privilege to even afford a vehicle of this caliber. The GolfR is far an away a better daily driver and it's not even close. For most of us superior 99% of the time usability is far more important than the little bit of extra added performance/fun for that 1% of occasions. German boats with no distinct identity? I'll take my BMW/VAG/MERC any day of the week, as so would most sane people.
@@loxlover1714 I said 'hothatch', perhaps you misconstrued on purpose, or do you have no comprehension skills? This car's focus isn't comfort, practicality and luxury (which it does better than the Golf R anyway). It's an enthusiast car with a focus on driving pleasure unlike the German rivals.
@@alsayedfakhri4597 I didn't misconstrue anything on purpose. My comprehension skills are on par with a college educated person. Never claimed to be the smartest person in the room. Your argument is misguided. There is no definition of a hothatch that states that the only purpose of a hothatch is to go as fast as possible around a circuit, or be the most engaging, especially in sacrifice of every other aspects of what makes hatchbacks great. You're literally making this up. You can easily be the second/third/fourth most performant/engaging and STILL be an excellent hothatch. The idiocy of your statement is further exemplified by implying that German rivals elicit no driving pleasure. That's objectively false, you can look at the sales numbers to prove that. It might not be fun to YOU. You might be one of those Ricky Bobby people that lives by "if you ain't first, you're last". Which is fine. That's why we have choices. The world many of us live in you absolutely CAN demand all of practicality, comfort, luxury, and performance from ANY vehicle. I've own everything from modified Integras to modified M3s throughout my 25 years of driving. And I'm a huge fan of the Golf R in my 40s because it strikes such a wonderful balance of what I want to live with at this point in my life. My answer would have certainly been different 20 years ago.
How is the Type R an ‘everyday’ car if it only has 2 back seats compared to the VW’s 3-seat bench? And the Type R’s UK price is a rip off compared to Japan’s - and the UK cost of the FK8.
Love the Type R! Exactly what a modern hot hatch should be. The Golf R just looks dull, bit of a sleeper i suppose 🤷♂️ take type R any day over golfR. I have a civic 1.5 turbo, and hell even thats a fun responsive drive that makes you smile, i cant imagine how the type R must feel
Excellent review. As an FK8 owner I can vouch for the ability of the Type R to both thrill, chill and fulfill- but never bore. No manual would be a deal breaker for me on the Golf R, no matter how good or fast the DSG is. An electric shaver where the shifter should be? Really? Yes, the FL5 improves on the FK8 in several areas. But I am already driving my dream car. And it looks the part. Always had a soft spot for a VW hatch- my folks had the original Rabbit in the mid '70's, and I also test drove the R32 when it came out. But the Honda just feels lighter on its feet.
Love this TypeR but got to ask who is it now aimed at? Hot hatches are by definition affordable cars (£47k is way outside affordable to most people), hyper hatches are by definition posh (think AMG, Audi RS etc), so is it trackday drivers? If so wouldn't a modded Clio RS or an M2 or a GR Yaris be a better trackday car? Or is it the well healed Honda fan who grew up with an EP3? Can see why they are saying limited numbers.
Well, I can only talk for myself but of course it’s aimed at real Honda fans. Drove nothing but Honda’s since I obtained my drivers license. As my income grew they got more expensive. Last 2 cars were S2000 and a FK-8. And Wednesday I’m picking up my new FL-5 🎉
Well narrated review. As a proud owner of a GR Corolla and an FL5 Type R, I can honestly say the Type R is on another level of quality, craftsmanship, and overall excellence. The car is an amazing machine, and I would NOT feel out of place driving in a Supercar group ride. And for sure I would not be left behind.
Absolutely bang on with this review. Sums it up perfectly. The new type R is a phenomenal all rounder. Might not be the quickest on damp bumpy twisty bits (that’ll be the GR Yaris) but everywhere else it reigns supreme.
Excellent review - by the way, the hot hatch in its original form is dead... these are both two high performance cars that move and live in a another plane of the auto-universe. I own a manual Golf R Mk 8 (Welsh but live in Virginia), I have owned it for a year with zero issues and miles and miles of smiles. I think the Honda Type-R is also a superb car, I just prefer mine.
I think the manual is back for 2024? or at least for the US market. I do like the Golf R probably the best for the money but not sure it will be as reliable as the Honda over the long term.
I really hope to try a type R one day to see how enjoyable is. The other hot hatches l've tried are comfortable and quick in the 0-100... definitely not much enjoyable to drive
I know Honda is very spiteful with their negative reviews, but come on. I love both cars, but he's visibly getting jostled around FAR more in the CTR than the Golf R. I've heard nothing but negative things about the road noise isolation in the new Civic/Integra. I can only imagine the CTR with its more aggressive and stickier compound are worse in this area as well. Golf R is better for driving around normally on a day to day. CTR is the one you want on a weekend or track day.
@@ZeeBri still a long time ago. Wars, pandemics, multiple changes in governments have happened since then... Also cars during the noughties were too cheap, while everything else inflated even a McDonald's happy meal had doubled in price, cars remained the same even cheaper throughout the years.. in 1992 my family bought an EG civic GL (base model) sedan for $27k (Australia), in 2015 you could get a base model civic for $24k which makes no sense when the 2015 model had way more technology and was far safer of a vehicle.. now they're getting a much needed market correction to how much they're actually worth.
Lost me when you claimed the CTR has a better ride and more steering feel than the Golf. Neither vehicle has much in the way of feel and the Golf is VASTLY more compliant on actual broken pavement. It's also WAY louder on the highway than the Golf and the forums are full of owners chasing rattles everywhere. So tired of all the reviewer hyperbole on the Civic.
New Type-R GT back in 2021 cost 37'500 euros. Today I bought 2021 with 20K km on odometer for 42'500 with a set of spare ''18 wheels and it's great deal! I've seen Type-Rs gone for ever 50K with much higher mileage
I love the CTR but I’m gonna call this out, he doesn’t seem to agree with.. I’ll say the entire internet on some things. The Golf R’s interior is definitely nicer. Now if you don’t like haptic or touch buttons, that’s one thing. Totally subjective and it’s okay to have an opinion. But as far as interior materials, quality fit/finish, and most importantly features, the golf dominates the CTR. We’re talking not only heated wheel and front seats, but rear seats too. Ventilated seats. 3 zone climate. Outstanding ambient lighting. HUD. 15 dampen settings. The best steering wheel shape on the market. Every travel assist feature you can think of. DCC. Very accurate sound system. Wireless charging and wireless carplay, etc. It gets better gas mileage, it’s quicker in the straights and close everywhere else, it’s more comfortable, it can be driven confidently in all weather, and is unanimously considered the best daily driver hot hatch by a large margin. It does lose in dynamics. The CTR will be more fun for those looking for it. It’s more playful, it’s more analog and gives that track focused feel. It’s really good at doing that. It’s a great car no doubt. Not that the golf isn’t capable, it is. It just doesn’t feel like it’s ever trying. It’s very efficient. Either way both cars are great. My buddy has a CTR and I have a Mk8R and he wouldn’t disagree with anything. Different cars for different folks.
Whilst the car has more features, this review states the Civic has a better ride and better fit and finish interior. The infotainment is embarrassingly poor on the mk8 too. Electronic dampers are an option on the Golf also which is criminal. It's not the best daily, because the only real difference is 4wd which in the UK isn't the be all and end all.
@@alsayedfakhri4597 I understand that but as I already said and what I’ll reiterate is that it absolutely does not have a better ride. I’d say this is objectively true. You can make the golf MUCH more compliant than the CTR can be. I know what he said but like… literally everyone else disagrees. Why is DCC option criminal? In the US they all come fully loaded. The infotainment isn’t embarrassingly poor lol. Have you actually used one? Give an example of why you think it’s bad. And 4wd isn’t the only different. Again, it has way more comfort features inside as well.
@@AntFragale I agree with this video, as someone who has driven both. The ride quality in comfort is brilliant, the range of damping is much greater than the golf. It's criminal because to get adaptive dampers on the golf, it has to be specced. Arguably the most important part of the driving experience is an option, showing you much VW care. It's poor because it's difficult to use and realised heavily on the touch screen. It's difficult to use whilst driving without physical controls.
@@alsayedfakhri4597 I’m doubting you’ve driven them both if you think the farthest comfort setting on the golf has less range of motion. You’re cooked man lol. And how is the infotainment hard? Like specifically, what is difficult? I use it effortlessly. In fact, setting everything to auto is cake.
Man, I think your thoughts and comparisons between the two is outstanding and I've watched dozens of MK8R videos with some CTR and GR Corolla vids sprinkled in. I'm currently on a waitlist for an MK8R, and my opportunity probably won't present itself until 2024 most likely with how the supply of them is scarce.
Golf R DSG can easily get under 4sec 0-60- I clocked mine at 3.8 - deff depends on road - tire temp- but with that AWD ? shit grips instantly compared to the Type R.... But the Type R has a really sexy manual- so just depends what ya want. Faster? go Golf R- slower but fun? go Type R.
Golf R new name should be Gold-A, who want's an "auto" hot hatch, certainly not me. I want to drive the car myself, such a shame VW went this way. Great review of both cars and awesome detail :)
Let's be honest. Type R is a good car, but it's only mildly cosmetically different from the previous one. Engineering is almost unchanged. So the step up in price isn't really justified, apart from saying "it's as good as the golf, so we're now charging the same money."
The engineering and aerodynamics are the main chamges they made to the FL5 vs the FK8. WTF are you talking about? Go watch Savagegeese's video on the new Type-R for the basic engineering breakdown.
For anyone watching this comparison, just go and actually physically look at the FL5 in comparison to the golf R- one looks stunning with bulging arches whilst the other is just a golf with quad pipes. I have one in championship white and it’s beautiful! I’ve had an 8v RS3 and this car is so much nicer despite the lack of a 2.5 5 cyl motor.
Interesting and fun review. Not sure about the comparison from Honda to Porsche. The GT3 manual gearbox is much better. You never get any gear grinds or lockouts like you do with the Honda. Handling is another iffy comparison. The Honda is great on the road, but it feels nothing like the GT3. GT3 feels really light in the front end, and the Honda is opposite. I know the weight distributions are mirror images of each other which explains some of it. Regardless, the CTR is a ton of fun because of its own unique driving characteristics.
@@roypeterka Maybe you jusy suck at shifting? I didn't say you "can't" make it grind. Just that the common crunchy/grindy 2nd gear issue is gone. It's still a manual...with manual gears.
@@BigBear-- Possibly. Or it could be that the problem exists. For me it hasn’t been a common problem on either car but happens. And BTW, there are other reviewers that have also experienced it. Same for the mk8r. Even the 7r is selling for more.

I'm absolutely shocked that you don't get a manual Golf r in the UK. I assumed with so many slobbish truck & suv drivers in North America we would be the last market to get the manual.
What an amazing review! Just bought that same exact FL5 this week and I must say the review is on point, the car is truly special.

New type R is just one of the best alrounders end of.
47k for a FWD car though..

Amazing review. I think the mark of how well made this video is, is that you can feel the joy. The only thing he didn’t mention is that in ten years the Honda will be purring like new and the Golf will be at the wreckers.
I like the Honda as well, but we both know the Golfs pretty reliable it's the same engine as the mk7, and they are good for at least 150k miles.
BS - have owned both Hondas and VWs in the past - both last just fine with good maintenance. I'll happily take the Golf R over any Honda.

The type r is a poor man's gt3 essentially. Got the deposit on a sonic grey one, can't wait to pick it up soon!

Stunningly reported. That Honda is a work of art.
A great review! Super nice narration. Kudos to the presenter. Subscribed!
That would change if you ever got a chance to drive the FL5.
Or actually look at one and see how the golf R (or anything else)looks very very dull. I have a championship white fl5 and it’s beautiful.
The FL5 Type R hands down the best TypeR
Excellent review my friend.
One question for you if’s posible.
If you need to consider buy one of this car a new type R or golf R mk7.5-8 ? What is best long term car? Consider carbon accumulation, electrical issues, quality materials.

This is why Chris Harris name the fl5 car of the year2022. The Power of dream honda💪
Love the colour of the Honda.
Objective, neutral, suave, and excellently informative.
Just out of curiosity, which one is quicker around a track? Not like I’m racing either one, but would be curious to know which car runs a track quicker.
Type r is a fair bit faster than the standard golf r on the track tests I've seen.
I’m a Honda fanboy, but I agree with you 100%, like how often are we on these type of roads rallying our car.
The red seatbelt on type r beats vw by itself not to mention that lovley rear wing , manual gearbox is so cool, and that clasic bashboard...
How is the Type R an ‘everyday’ car if it only has 2 back seats compared to the VW’s 3-seat bench?
And the Type R’s UK price is a rip off compared to Japan’s - and the UK cost of the FK8.
Well in Japan...the car is made in Japan. In UK the car is made in Japan.
Does that start to connect the dots on why it's more money in UK?
Forgot to add that the previous FK8 was made in UK.

They're aimed at anyone with a passion for driving dynamics and good reliable engineering.
Can't see why hazard lights flash when breaking a little hard,.

The Type R is overall more immersive and exciting. It's bigger and more special!

Great presenter, of a great car! Thoroughly enjoyed

Regardless, the CTR is a ton of fun because of its own unique driving characteristics.
insightful review of this review!
The gearbox issues of the FK8 have been worked out in the FL5. No more 2nd gear grinds, or 4th gear WOT lockouts.
@@BigBear-- That’s not true. I have experienced 2nd gear grind (not lockout). It’s not surprising given they didn’t make any real changes.
It also never happens in the GT3. Do you have an FL5 CTR and how many miles have you put on it? Or are you a keyboard warrior who is just guessing?
