The Skins Before CS:GO & CS2

  • In the early 2000s I'd spend every waking day customizing CS 1.6. I fell so deeply in love with the game that I even continued to develop for the game way past its prime. Reason being, that it's still the only game I play that truly lets you customize the entirety of it.
Here we discuss how not only CS:GO took the fun out of customizing gun skins, but how an entire industry figured out a way to sell you gun models when they were free to download during the primordial era of online gaming in the early 2000s.
We can't go back in time, but here I recount my experiences with skinning and modeling during those times. I hope this gives the generation who developed along my side and new comers to this lore some perspective on what those times were like, and how beautiful they were.
Gaming will never be the same, but at least we can reflect on it.
This channel does not upload regularly. Thank you for enjoying the video and feel free to share your experiences with modeling and skinning during the early 2000s with GoldSource games.

Too bad the modding is a thing of the past.
To me, CoD Black Ops 3 is the final game to see a decent modding support.
But don’t be sad, at least all these old games are still alive thanks to the modding scene :)

Same feels man.. i feel so nostalgic about old CS :/ started as a kid back then the games gave u more "freedom". Everything was community made that was real magic, CS1.6 and all the mods that was really special but most of us didint aprreciate it .. then moving to CS: Source where i did not spend much time. Played mostly surf maps, then again the CSGO came, didint play it and other cs game for years were less and less played by me, other games came where ive spend many, many hours from mmorpgs like Shayia, World of Warcraft to league and other games i still play till this day with pauses and then in 2016 I`ve started playing CS:GO soon i found Zombie Escape, always feel so nostalgic when i think about ZE on CSGO :c later on in 2017 ZE server where Ive played died bcs of some stooopid people n drama :/ that was biggest server in my country always 64/64 players :/ stopped playing again didint want to play on other servers which soon also started dying out but ive made friends for life there on my first server... after that i stopped playing but later on tried many times with friends ive meet there to revive the sever we loved :/ nothing came out of it... i started to play Planetside 2, PUBG and later on Warzone and games ive mentioned, more than before with friends and then again in 2019 we found half dead Zombie Escape server that was barely alive, many people from community of the first and now dead server incl my close friends I`ve found there came to this new "promised land" we had great time but this server also died mostly bcs machine server was on was shit and after our group of like 10-15 players came and played daily server in few weeks became 64/64 but machine was so bad everybody lagged, crashes and server died after few great months later on we also tried to revive this one on new machine but people in community burned out bcs of failure of first server and failed tries of his revival, death of this server and everything :/ later on same year we started to play Classic World of Warcraft good times and same year i did come back to older versions with a friend and stayed in CS Source till now and man only there i found how much did they shallow the cs games..
CS Source felt so much "freely" much more skill dependant with many things for example BHOP was much harder but u could make better speeds if u knew how to do it and it felt "right" but in csgo it is kinda blocked with kinda "automatic help" and its muuuch easier and less skill dependant :c this "freedom" from gameplay perspective made many funny gameplay situations in CS:S thanks to this u could use terrain, skills and everything more efficient cuz u kinda "slided across map" engine thing and it felt rly magical compared to csgo saying it even tho i have spend great time in csgo and have good and bittersweet memories with it... if u dont understand just type in yt "zombie escape css montage" many players of average or simply good and god tier skills doing montages it can help u understand what i meant by more "freedom" also much more Zombie Escape maps than in CSGO much more custom stuff, new maps still goin out and its all made in CS:S Source SDK and later on ported to cs:go even tho u would expect other way around in 2022. But all great things come to and end :/ that not that small community that ive joined in CSS in 2019 was sticking together like good friends or a family, well not as much these days as before cuz people start their adult lifes, and they dont have as much time as before, they have less and less time and come less and less to play on the server incl me :/ which is kinda sad and dissapointing the less time i get to play, coming there once in a while and not finding people ive used to play with is sad:/ adult life is dissapointing in this regard :c miss the times where opening 1.6/cs:s/go and joining an server made me feel at home all the bros ive made there, and in other games sad we dont have as much time as before that was really good time when i think about it :c
Ehhhhh lets hope that if new CS will be created in future it will resemble more 1.6 and CS:S than GO and that it will have great focus on community servers, hope thanks to that new communites like the ones we are/were part of will be born.

Bro, I feel the exact same way about Half Life 2 Deathmatch.
When I was a little kid back 2006, I would sit beside my dad at our family computer and watch him play HL2DM on his time off, and every time I saw it I was blown away.
The sheer insanity of the custom maps and how he always knew the secrets hidden on each one... fake walls, invisible platforms, that one low gravity hev suit pickup on dm_spookyface...
It was just so much fun to watch, and he even let me play it from time to time (though I wasn't good at it at all).
The main thing I loved most was all the creative maps people made. The giant room maps... the many bizarre killbox maps... and the genuine strategy he and the other players used in memorizing secrets and one-uping each other.
Then, when I finally get my own PC years later and get the game myself... I'm left in utter disappointment.
There aren't any regularly populated DM servers anymore, and the ones that are still going have this stupid *"HYPER FAST RESPAWN INSTA KILL LOW GTAVITY"* mode that is not fun at all and rapidly tiring.
Now the game is mostly dead and only played by groups of non-English speakers here and there.
This, in tandem with the shutdown of LittleBigPlanet 2's servers and Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft, feels like an era where free creativity in games is dying... and I wish it wasn't.

It was the golden age of self expression in a virtual environment.
Not only did you own the product you bought, but you could make it sing after your own will... something that's saddly all but gone from modern games.
I use to make huge amounts of maps for Doom 2, Quake 1, Quake 2, Half-Life, StarCraft and WarCraft 2. Modding the hell out of those games was equally as fun as playing them.
For me winter and summer breaks were me on my old Pentium 2 PC churning with ideas around modding.

CSGO skins cant even compare to cs1.6 or CSS, in fact many great animators for AAA games, started with CSS and CS1.6. Technically CSGO and 2 still have modding support but for some reason it's not on gamebanana, there is one really talented chinese skin creator who makes insane skins. I would've been fine with CSGO's original skins if they were tied behind progression bar something like the camos from COD. It would've made countless replayability and it could've became my fav CS game, because grinding for skins would've been really fun. Paying for 300$ for a skin made in photoshop is just ridiculous.

Exactly my thoughts too and what's fueling my nostalgia, but anyway I don't play that much but I aknowledge this was a golden era for gaming which sadly a lot of young gamers will never know. Modding was all over the place in the PC gaming scene, especially counter-strike which had hundred of servers with custom maps, skin-packs, mods (think KZ, Surf, Jailbreak, zombie run) I know CSGO still has it in someways but the competitive aspect of CSGO has taking over and now people focus on getting the META of the game, streaming etc... The fun and the spirit slowly fades away and now peoples who seek it turn to others games that still offer a bit of freedom and supports custom made content.

and when i intall it and play on mirage maps and i was wow you can play the game online and offline (with bots) and i was play that game 2 hour every single day
until i realise i was kinda bored in this game no skins no new weapon model and the same map i ve play
on that day i was searching on cs 1.6 skins and danm so many skins on internet and the special about that the skins are free i mean i hane no money for purcase the stupid skins on game
and i ve search map, custom characters
cs modded like cs mod csgo weapon
cs extreme cs call of duty weapon
and play on server i like this game alot
and ya' thas my whole story about cs 1.6
i hope i can find the other games like cs you know custom skins like that.

tbh skins are something that was inevitable. The only alternative would have been valve not hosting any servers (since they would have to rely solely on game purchases alone), but then we wouldn't have had a good matchmaking/competitive system and maybe we'd have had skins introduced via DLCs eventually... which would have been worse imo.

  • @Khelash360

Dude, I remember being so excited to download a bunch of custom models for every weapon back when Gamebanana was still called FPSBanana. It's disheartening to see the direction modern games have gone in. It's all so standardized, almost sterile. The game that made me realize this was Overwatch. I remember when it first came out, I was sure that Blizzard would eventually release mapping tools, allow for custom configs, custom dedicated servers, stuff like that. And then as the years went by, it seemed like the game only grew more restrictive. CS has been steadily moving in the same direction, and it's now worse than ever with CS2.
The shift towards SBMM was also a huge factor that favored this new sanitized presentation. The gap between esports and casual gameplay grew smaller and smaller, which lead to a lot of people taking the game way too seriously, which in turn lead to a more frustrating experience.
There's a reason people still play 1.6, CSS, and TF2, for example. They've got an active community keeping the game alive through custom content. And that happened because the devs trusted the players with their tools. I can't imagine a modern studio releasing anything akin to the Source SDK for a multiplayer game these days. And that sucks.
Sadly, people who didn't experience that kind of freedom to fuck around with their games don't really understand how valuable it truly was.
