I love reading reflections like this. There really is a whole generation of people with unshared feelings like this just living life out there. I hope these stories don't get lost to time. Thank you for sharing.
Bro, I feel the exact same way about Half Life 2 Deathmatch. When I was a little kid back 2006, I would sit beside my dad at our family computer and watch him play HL2DM on his time off, and every time I saw it I was blown away. The sheer insanity of the custom maps and how he always knew the secrets hidden on each one... fake walls, invisible platforms, that one low gravity hev suit pickup on dm_spookyface... It was just so much fun to watch, and he even let me play it from time to time (though I wasn't good at it at all). The main thing I loved most was all the creative maps people made. The giant room maps... the many bizarre killbox maps... and the genuine strategy he and the other players used in memorizing secrets and one-uping each other. Then, when I finally get my own PC years later and get the game myself... I'm left in utter disappointment. There aren't any regularly populated DM servers anymore, and the ones that are still going have this stupid *"HYPER FAST RESPAWN INSTA KILL LOW GTAVITY"* mode that is not fun at all and rapidly tiring. Now the game is mostly dead and only played by groups of non-English speakers here and there. This, in tandem with the shutdown of LittleBigPlanet 2's servers and Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft, feels like an era where free creativity in games is dying... and I wish it wasn't.
Too bad the modding is a thing of the past. To me, CoD Black Ops 3 is the final game to see a decent modding support. But don’t be sad, at least all these old games are still alive thanks to the modding scene :)
The modding scene for CS 1.6 was awesome (anyone remember the CDG forum?). The reward of making your own models and skins and seeing them in-game (and being used by others!) was just so satisfying. I'm amazed that some of my old work lives on in some form on Gamebanana. Excellent video!
I don't recall the CDG forum, but I was a big time enthusiast of the CSBanana site. I love how we all got a chance to experience real modding supported by developers. Glad this little video found its way to you!
Funny story about making my own skins as a kid: i already had a pirated version of cs that changed the menu background, characters, weapon skins... But the way I made my own skins was to open the skin file in paint, paint over it with bright colors, and then save it with the same filename. I did the same with textures 😂
I was a born in the mid 2000's and never had the chance to experience these old cs games as I had never gotten a pc at that young age therefore my first valve games were cs:go and tf2, but seeing the modding possibilities before and also am so sad I never got to experience it.
I'm glad I found your channel, my dad raised me on that "Carmackian Hacker Culture" when it came to games and I share a lot of the same thoughts you said in this video, great stuff.
It was the golden age of self expression in a virtual environment. Not only did you own the product you bought, but you could make it sing after your own will... something that's saddly all but gone from modern games. I use to make huge amounts of maps for Doom 2, Quake 1, Quake 2, Half-Life, StarCraft and WarCraft 2. Modding the hell out of those games was equally as fun as playing them. For me winter and summer breaks were me on my old Pentium 2 PC churning with ideas around modding. It was the golden age.
I love this comment so much because it makes me feel at peace that I wasn't alone doing this. I went through some evolutions in my life where I thought modding games wasn't a real hobby, but it always pulled me back and felt good to do. It truly was were I felt self expression. Not many other things in life did that for me. Absolutely love this comment.
I concur with you 100%. The days of downloading skins from FPSBanana (now known as Gamebanana), CS BG Info, CS HLDS Ru, TWHL Info, CStrike-Planet, Todocounter and possibly plenty of other defunct sites and blogs.... Are gone. Gaming was simply different then when these sites were relevant.
Exactly my thoughts too and what's fueling my nostalgia, but anyway I don't play that much but I aknowledge this was a golden era for gaming which sadly a lot of young gamers will never know. Modding was all over the place in the PC gaming scene, especially counter-strike which had hundred of servers with custom maps, skin-packs, mods (think KZ, Surf, Jailbreak, zombie run) I know CSGO still has it in someways but the competitive aspect of CSGO has taking over and now people focus on getting the META of the game, streaming etc... The fun and the spirit slowly fades away and now peoples who seek it turn to others games that still offer a bit of freedom and supports custom made content.
My man! So glad I found your channel! So much nostalgia watching your videos of CS 1.6, the resemblance is so much with my childhood! And now this, perfect expression of what I feel about csgo paywall skins!
Man this video is truly emotional. Back then gaming was like - buy the game once, and it's all yours! Nowadays you buy the game once and you get unfinished product + you have to pay for skins and maps and dlcs. It has become too much monetary And btw, to this day counter strike modding community has been creating amazing mods like valorant skins etc
had a great skin pack that played a marlyn manson song when Ts won and that song from matrix when CTs won and a dude would say "put em on tape and let em hang, we're outta here"
we're the same age, this felt like I made a video about a very specific niche topic no one I know would understand. Literal children making maps and skins fueled the modern dev community lol. Thanks man... seeing the skinshack website for the first time since I last downloaded a file from it was surreal. Thank homie
yeah man, customization in these old games was so good. Even tho i hate cs 1.6 i really understand you since i remember being 10 years old, going to the doomworld or zdoom forums and downloading every gzdoom mod i could find. Pretty cool.
the bit about feeling like a badass because you had your customized guns you chose really resonated with me. I remember thinking "damn... this is the best game of all time" playing on a Zombie Escape server with all my custom weapon models, hehe. good video
This was an emotional experience for me. I use to create my own maps as an 11 year old. I was so proud that I learned how to do that. Now, its all about exploiting children for being these skins and models. They will never know what its like to figure out where to place the texture packs, skin models, etc in the CS files. Sad.
I know im late to this but there is a way to make your own cago skins or even download them i haven’t done it in a while but im pretty sure you can use them on community servers

I wanted gun mods so badly but i didnt know how to install them. i thought all you had to do was download the mods and open the file... i was so sad because i couldnt figure out how to install them. even to this day i still struggle to installl mods in some games and they almost never work. particularly amxx mod x for 1.6.
I love how losers nowadays brag about wasting their lives spending all their money on something you could download in the good old days. Also, as much as matchmaking is convenient I don't enjoy the fact I can't choose exactly what I get to play. And the communities you can find in 1.6...
tbh skins are something that was inevitable. The only alternative would have been valve not hosting any servers (since they would have to rely solely on game purchases alone), but then we wouldn't have had a good matchmaking/competitive system and maybe we'd have had skins introduced via DLCs eventually... which would have been worse imo.
Dude, I remember being so excited to download a bunch of custom models for every weapon back when Gamebanana was still called FPSBanana. It's disheartening to see the direction modern games have gone in. It's all so standardized, almost sterile. The game that made me realize this was Overwatch. I remember when it first came out, I was sure that Blizzard would eventually release mapping tools, allow for custom configs, custom dedicated servers, stuff like that. And then as the years went by, it seemed like the game only grew more restrictive. CS has been steadily moving in the same direction, and it's now worse than ever with CS2. The shift towards SBMM was also a huge factor that favored this new sanitized presentation. The gap between esports and casual gameplay grew smaller and smaller, which lead to a lot of people taking the game way too seriously, which in turn lead to a more frustrating experience. There's a reason people still play 1.6, CSS, and TF2, for example. They've got an active community keeping the game alive through custom content. And that happened because the devs trusted the players with their tools. I can't imagine a modern studio releasing anything akin to the Source SDK for a multiplayer game these days. And that sucks. Sadly, people who didn't experience that kind of freedom to fuck around with their games don't really understand how valuable it truly was.
What was a bit lame about custom skins and models is that nobody else could see them. That's a key difference with CS:GO. If you get a skin then other players can see it.
I hate how developers have stopped supporting mods. I remember modding my wii and getting custom tracks on mario kart. In fact i still play ctgp and i love it but now with anti-cheat and corporate greed I would be banned and probably sued because its Nintendo
CSGO skins cant even compare to cs1.6 or CSS, in fact many great animators for AAA games, started with CSS and CS1.6. Technically CSGO and 2 still have modding support but for some reason it's not on gamebanana, there is one really talented chinese skin creator who makes insane skins. I would've been fine with CSGO's original skins if they were tied behind progression bar something like the camos from COD. It would've made countless replayability and it could've became my fav CS game, because grinding for skins would've been really fun. Paying for 300$ for a skin made in photoshop is just ridiculous.
Bruh im researching 1.6 modding scene in 2024 and made a few skins, im boutta sell all my cs2 skins since game is dying anyways, loved csgo mechanics, devs not updating cs2, i mean why would they when they receive millions a month not doing anything, because of people who open lootboxes with worst odds the world has seen, legal gaslight daylight robbery. Playing fxcking crab game or some sht is funnier than cs2 currently
i was watch the csgo video in 2022 and i want play the game so bad but fun fact i no have a pc and i was think can i play cs go on mobile and on that day i spend a 30 minute to searching on youtube goggle and i find this game cs 1.6 but you can play on the phone wtf and when i intall it and play on mirage maps and i was wow you can play the game online and offline (with bots) and i was play that game 2 hour every single day until i realise i was kinda bored in this game no skins no new weapon model and the same map i ve play on that day i was searching on cs 1.6 skins and danm so many skins on internet and the special about that the skins are free i mean i hane no money for purcase the stupid skins on game and i ve search map, custom characters cs modded like cs mod csgo weapon cs extreme cs call of duty weapon and play on server i like this game alot and ya' thas my whole story about cs 1.6 i hope i can find the other games like cs you know custom skins like that.
I only played team deathmatch on cs go but it still sucked. In cs 1.6 and source, 99% of the servers had respawn in base and it was awesome, not to mention the costum maps on war3ft+respawn. The community on cs go sucked and so does cs 2 and team deathmatch is gone lol.
you mentioned carmack like 5 times, why don't you go over to idtech instead of being a valve megacorp mindslave for all time? Boomer shooters have never been more popular and all the source code is GPL

Damn straight, brother! CS:S was the last great C-S.
Still useing a stillseries custom hands lol 😂
CS source had the best skins imho
i agree that csgo isnt fun, but old cs titles like CSS and CS 1.6 is Fun, the community and the modding is why CSS and CS 1.6 Fun
I like cs 1.6 cuz it runs on my 1gb ram with 100 fps 😊
You are wrong tho about not being allowed to mod csgo.

Big black dil
I only played team deathmatch on cs go but it still sucked. In cs 1.6 and source, 99% of the servers had respawn in base and it was awesome, not to mention the costum maps on war3ft+respawn.
The community on cs go sucked and so does cs 2 and team deathmatch is gone lol.
see my skins bro
god i hate video essay style videos.. so cringe
lol! I have a 50k csgo inventory and it feels like I just got an upgrade in cs2! My knifes looking stupid glossy!!!
ok boomer
you mentioned carmack like 5 times, why don't you go over to idtech instead of being a valve megacorp mindslave for all time? Boomer shooters have never been more popular and all the source code is GPL
That skinshack website had the best flash intro
I can't recall it. I just remember it loading into the browser hub. Interested to see it!
