- A special thank you to Whomobile for helping out with this project.

I discovered de_rats in 2003 when I first started playing Counter-Strike 1.6 on Steam. It was one of my earliest memories in the game and I reflect fondly on the memories of not only playing the original map, but the many sequels too.
There are tons of spin off maps in 1.6 like cs_mice, de_rats4 and so many others all inspired by the Cyber Rat (Chris Spain). These levels even made their way into Counter-Strike: Source too! One of the earliest custom maps to hit CSS was de_rats and it had a ton of people excited. Servers were absolutely PACKED when it first entered servers. Me and my friends were hooked! Of course my heart belongs to Gold Source Rats though.
I wanted to explore the works that Chris Spain made and most of the information I gathered about him is all thanks to YellowJello from GameBanana. YJ wrote a comprehensive article on Chris Spain and his mapping career during the golden era of Gold Source Engine games.

I was surprised to hear that de_rats was originally a map for Half-Life called, "Rats!". When I was younger I do remember playing the map in Half-Life: Deathmatch, but had no idea it wasn't originally a CS map. Playing the map in Half-Life is like experiencing the map how it was originally intended. It was truly eye opening.
The real kicker here is that Chris Spain didn't create the Counter-Strike version titled "de_rats". Someone stole the level and ported it to Counter-Strike without Spain's consent. The versions titled, de_rats_2001 & de_rats_2002 are what de_rats would have been like if Spain got around to a CS version before the thief did. Truly fascinating!
Spain also had de_rats2 (or cs_rats2) stolen as well! So to correct this issue Spain released his version titled, de_rats2_2002 for CS. It's really difficult juggling all these naming conventions, but this is what mappers had to deal with back then. And this should be common sense, but don't steal maps. Designers work so hard on these things. When they get stolen, or renamed it's pretty awful stepping on someone's hard work like that.
Sadly in 2023 Chris Spain's Cyber Rat website went down. You can still access the site through the Way Back Machine though.

As these games age, so do the players and their many stories too. I hope with this project it gives you some perspective on online gaming in the early 1990s and 2000s. Stay tuned for more!

Rats, Rats, we are the Rats
We're dirty and forlorn
whomobile??? what are you doing here???!!!?!?!
@@LemarSullivan821 did you not watch the video?
(@@Whomobile) video? what video? there's no video
We play at night, we stalk at night, we're the rats
"Despite all my rage we're still just de_rats near a fridge!"
Thank you for keeping this community alive. Wish there'd still be servers in 2024 hosting these kinds of maps
Sometimes clan XA and Circle of Friends will play rats maps. I was addicted to the WristHax 24/7 rats server back in 2014 when they were boosting the server. Sure do wish there was a dedicated community playing these maps again though.
@@krazzy6440It's not just rats but custom maps in general, like Nipper etc. Been playing on Cause4Alarm and CKW Gaming from 2007 to 2016 but sadly they're gone now.
What's sadder is that CS2, even though it has a bunch of maps on the workshop also doesn't have any custom map communities
Hey man please never stop making videos you put out great content for OG’s like me who love cs1.6 and CZ and still play to this day!
Wow! Nice to see that you are back! Gonna watch the video tonight :D
Legend.
Taking a look back on what was popular of the CS1.6 maps from back in the day is hella awesome. Rats is such a really cool series of maps and getting to know the history of them is pretty neat.
It's kind of amazing how much of a giant influence this map was on gaming at that time. There were even rats maps for Unreal Tournament and UT2004. Basically, if it had a map editor in the early 2000's, it had a rats map in some form.
love a retrospective like this. you said players never experienced anything quite like this before, but little big world was in Thief Gold, in November 1999
Even older is the game series Sarge's Heroes or the movie Honey I Shrunk the kids did it first, but it was new to us CS players. I'll have to check out Theif sometime.
NEW UPLOAD LETS GO
Thank you for this video! I've always thought this map deserved more attention, as it spawned an entire genre. Anyone remember the server called "Rats! Rats! Rats!" back in the day that would only cycle through rats maps?
I may have played on that server!
Good god. I remembered playing on my second hand pc that ran Windows XP my dad gave me in the kitchen. I remembered playing on a Counter-Strike Fun Map server, and mom giving me a grilled cheese sandwich while waiting to respawn on DE_RATS while spectating 20+ players total gun it out as T & CT.
And I only remembered thanks to seeing this thumbnail and watching your video. Thank you Krazzy, this is better than any time machine.
I appreciate comments like these. I can vividly imagine that moment for you. This map blew my mind when I first experienced it as a kid. It was one of those maps that truly took Counter-Strike beyond for me. I was in awe of what people were creating for the game. It was such a wild concept to kid krazzy that I was forever hooked on custom content for the game.
Man, this map made me want to be tiny, just imagine how much bigger the world will be. There was also a show i watched as a kid, with a tiny guy which made me want that fantasy even more.
play thief gold, it has a mission where there is a giant world
man your videos are just perfect, also same! rats3 is my favorite of them all, way too many cute details on it. would also like to mention that chris spain's "edge of darkness" for HL1 is an absolute must play
another certified banger, I'm only 22 but these videos gives me nostalgia for a time I was never even alive. Reminds me of playing Halo Reach with my brother and my introduction to PC gaming with TF2 and CS:GO
Thanks for the shout out. :)
Excellent video as usual, it was a joy to watch this one.
Yeah boss. You guys can read YJ's article here if you missed it in the description: gamebanana.com/projects/36437
Good memories - I used to play this on HL: DM. Didn’t realise it had been ported to CS.
Ownership ethos was truly the wild west back then haha. I first encountered rats maps in CS and thought hmm, this must be the creators first map with all the flaws the CS version had. I only found out it was stolen from Half-Life recently. Truly interesting!
@@krazzy6440 yes lol when I first watched this I confused myself and thought - was this from CS first??
RIP Cyber-Rat website 1999-2023
Yeah, so sad it went down. I wonder why? Was one of the last remaining classic CS sites.
@@krazzy6440 I guess because Chris stopped renewing the domain
I remember spending nights playing with my friends on rats maps. Good times.
Here we go again, you really explained my feelings about these maps, I had a lot of fun with my friends playing them over and over.
Also they'll probably come and play these maps again after they watch this video:) so thanks!
really enjoyable vid, I'm glad videos like this are being made for my lovely CS
"de_rats3 is my favourite version of all time"
Finally someone says it! I freakin love rats3. :)
And really awesome to see Whomobile as a guest on your channel
It's just dripping in atmosphere. I did use de_rats3_v2 for this video as it was the one I spent the most time on. I noticed in the original de_rats3 the light switch actually turns off all the lights, where as in v2 some lights like the bed light and desk lamp stay on. It looks awesome in there like that.
Great video. Definitely takes me to simpler times.
Thanks for bringing some nostalgic memories back. I remember how I played cs1.6 server with classes with cusrom weapons such as bazooka from HL and melee weapon from Halo. I remember having great time spent in this map :)
There is such a map in Thief The Dark Project (1998). The Sword is the name of the mission.
This is my first video I've seen of yours, and as someone who's trying to get into GoldSrc mapping, it's fuckin awesome seeing someone so passionate about the charm the engine has.
It may not have physics, it may not have great lighting, but it's so perfectly late 90s/early 00s that it's impossible not to feel a little giddy when you see it.
The engine aesthetic is truly art to me. You're on the money!
"We should leave, I could spend all day in here."
That' me watching your videos, man. Awesome channel btw
so comfy
Always good to see another Krazzy vid is out!
This. Don't ever stop.
Awesome video, once again.
Core memory unlocked
Last Friday the boys loaded up de_rats on a cs2 server they were hosting. Hopefully we will be doing it again today as well. ❤
Would like to join you all. What's the server name?
@@krazzy6440 oh man, would love to have you!! i had missed your message till this morning! (didnt miss too much yesterday, we tryed out oskmos's insertion port and ended early) thought its seems like everyone is in on joining when it does pop up, hosting another server next friday. we'll send a invite on your discord or steam. happy weekend brother! ❤
@@axelshawAk Appreciate it! Look forward to it.
Remember the rats map where there was also a drivable mini railroad. And at least 2 rooms.
de_rats4!
@@krazzy6440 Yeah I found it on Gamebanana right afterwards.
Missed the hidden gun room in rats!
Damn dude. such a big part of my life on these maps. Is there ANY "fun map" servers based in USA on CS2?!?!! i always search every now and then, find nothing. I'm going to look into if anyone imported some nipper maps into CS2 and I'll buy a cheap server. Those maps need to be preserved for the recent CS versions even if janky. awesome vid!
These maps were huge in my life too! Sadly the CS2 community browser tab is a shallow husk of what GO's use to be. It's incredibly disappointing and a perplexing one. Source 2 has a wonderful level editor, yet the community browser tab is this hidden little world icon that a vast majority of CS2 player's will probably never discover especially if they're new to the game. Really seems like Valve is pushing players into a strict competitive mindset.
it was my favoRAT map
crossover of a lifetime.
Rats? They make me crazy.
Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with rats. Rats make me crazy. Crazy?
Would love to see a video breaking down solider of fortunes bigfreakinghouse
new upload yaay
I used to play de_rats2_2002 with my friends on lan and I'm pretty sure any server that runs those maps had a low gravity because it just meant to be played that way even some vanilla servers had low gravity it was a big thing in the early days of cs but now one talks about it anymore how strange
They had low gravity in CS because they were designed for Half-Life where fall damage only deals 10 damage regardless of how far was your fall. Meanwhile in CS you may die from basically any jump in rats so the server owners had to add low gravity in order to make most falls survivable in CS.
another banger vid 🤙
15:40 There's another good map, called "dm_intel_inside" which contains everything with awesome details: window, floor, desk, shelves and even the inside of the computer and the monitor! 😉
Just checked this one out on GameBanana. Wish I had explored Source more in its prime because there's so many genius creations on the engine. Cool map.
@@krazzy6440This map is also available on the Garry's Mod Workshop.
We need this in cs2 for deathmatch.
Amazing video! Btw, can you tell me what the outro track is? Or atleast, tell me what genre of music is this? I love how relaxing it is...
Oh thanks I made that song. I don't know the genre haha, but you can listen to it here: on.soundcloud.com/Z5BN13u9qHKjHTsz7
@@krazzy6440 Yooo thanks so much! It's really great :)
Can you do Survivor ? The history because it is the scariest map in cs . I actually did a gameplay on that map you can check it out haha playing the survivor while remebering playing it as kind in 2004-2009 and yeah also how about videos on : 1. CS Deathrun History 2.CS Zobmie Mode History 3.CS Hide n Seek History so basiclly all mods? I hope i helped
Anybody ever play with Decoy? dude was a beast on DE_rats
A CS TH-camr and a TF2ber collabing a video together? 😮
I saw Whomobile's exploration of Blahhh and had to connect!
What's the pin for escape at jail rats?
(joke)
This is totally off-topic, but you vaguely sound like Jesse McCartney's characters in Kingdom Hearts (not an insult by any means; he's one of the best voice actors in that series)
Just looked this up, thank you haha. I would love to get into voice acting.
krazzy you are very simmular to leafy
very simmular voice
I remember as a kid playing a rats map but i remember it having an pc in it can someone tell me the name
No wonders why this map always felt so awful to play CS and as if it were designed for a completely different game... Well, for what I learnt here, that's because it was lol
