im gonna say it, marza sonic looks way better in realistic places rather than cartoony places weve already been used to literally every sonic game besides heroes slap a cartoony hedgehog onto a realistic setting that it just… works. thats the same reason why nobody complained about pixar until the spiderverse style gained popularity. and no, its not because “the cartoony artstyle clashes with the realistic graphics” or whatever. the spiderverse style just looks better because, well, we just want something new. placing sonic in the setting of lost world is just so jarring to me because every background looks like a stock image cartoon setting. and were just not used to seeing modern sonic in that world. if anything, classic sonic works better in that world because we were used to seeing classic sonic in cartoony graphics. but of course, making sonic coherent with the setting also works. marza sonic worked in unleashed because all the humans and sometimes the environments in unleashed were stylized as well. i guess frontiers doesnt look _that_ good because the realism in the setting was cranked up. but like i said, it looks a lot better than lost world.
While I do think Sonic can look out of place in Frontiers, they did do certain things to at least try and make him fit a little bit more with the same model. Textures, like you mentioned, certain effects, and vocally. His model doesn't belong there (at least according to some, I actually think it's fine), but basically everything else about him does. Even the shoes have textures that show their age
1:25 With the model there's a few things that make me feel it should be completely redone I agree that having a consistent look for Sonic isn't a bad thing, but continuing to use and old model is a double edged sword if you don't update the model continually to stay up-to-date with what computer animation is capable of, and SEGA has failed with that. This has lead to a few issues, since they're effectively limiting themselves to the capabilities of 2005 computer animation (The current models for most of the characters originated in Shadow The Hedgehog's CG cutscenes) The biggest issue is that it is quite difficult to make Sonic expressive, which is very apparent when you realize that all of the modern renders use one of like, four expressions. Based on Sonic's socks, Sonic Prime seems to derive it's models from the game models, but I suspect that they had to completely rework major parts of the model and the rigging to get Sonic to be as expressive as he is in the show If SEGA implements the changes made to the model and rigging for Sonic Prime into the games to bring the model back up to current standards and make tweaks to Sonic's model to fit the games, it should lead to everything looking a hundred times better without them having to completely remake the model Alternatively, since the model is almost legally an adult, it may be better for them to make a completely new model, as it would allow for them to make a model that is up to current standards from the start. (It would also be nice to have Sonic's shoes actually look like leather shoes rather than metal triangles)
honestly i think sonic fits in frontiers since the whole premise of it is that the starfall islands are out of place and different clashing with the rest of the world
Ehhhhh. Like I get the point but I also think Sonic and friends are meant to feel out of place for the setting of the game. Like will I want them like this all the time? No. So I think it's okay for what Froniters is going for. I think the main issue is the team obviously wasn't given the full time needed to make everything gell. They game world would look wayyyy better if most of the platforming structures were attached to the environment in some way. Or at least add a "digtal" effect on floating obstacle courses to match the theme. Like the courses are making themselves, recognizing that Sonic's on the island. It also just kind of feels like Sonic fans make up narratives all the time. Sonic Superstars kind of debunks that Sega doesn't understand this conspect as the games artstyle is pretty coherent with the characters. The real issue is that they should cutback on reuse on very important aspects of the games like Sonic's model since you'll be looking at it 100% of the time. Each game should aim with really twieking the model or just outright making new ones for the artstyle of the game. Also actually add details like him breathing giving him more slight movements so he doesn't feel like a plastic figure in games like Forces and Froniters.
Agreed, the art-style and model must be cohesive or else sonic just looks out of place. If they decide to stick with the realistic look of frontiers, they better change sonic's model a bit to fit
Does it? Go argue with the Spiderverse fans, they need it. Meanwhile, I'm sure the new Ariel is sneakily cast as white, they just danked up the color balance so if it was brightened to normal, Halle Bailey would appear a relative of Mads Mikkelsen.
I've got some gripes with the model myself. I think his fingers don't interact with his knuckles properly and make the hand look like a bunch of sausages attached to a bigger, flatter sausage. His eyebrows never get used, which irks me most of all. You have a character based off rubberhose cartoons, known for being pretty damn expressive, but his expression nowadays is so static and lifeless. Then of course there's his shoes, which a lot of people don't consider for expressiveness. Look at the Uekawa shoe design. They're so exaggerated and fun looking. I never did like the weird pleather-metallic look, to be honest. I think they need to be longer and a little more flexible. And this is just a small grip, but I think his torso is a little too big and puffed-out. It makes him look stockier.
I have a huge love for the sonic 06 model cause i knew 06 as a kid and i also like how sonic looks older espically with how mature sonoc is in frontiers
Honestly i like how sonic looks in lost world and frontiers. Sure he may look the same in his idle pose in lost world, but all his animations have been somewhat "cartoonified". From the squash and stretch jump to the peelout run, they fit the aesthetic imo. Same for frontiers with it's more realistic take, sonic's slightly more realistic appearance with the added fur and detail fits the world too. My main problem is with forces since he looks too much like classic sonic
Honestly, I think it could be the graphics changing so much that makes him look wierd but it also could be that the art style is also changed to fit sonic model as well! 😅 Love the video as always and keep it up buddy! 😁
In my opinion the Heroes model and artstyle for the characters is the PERFECT Sonic style and model. Moslty because its just Uekawa's art in 3D and I love that, it can be so expressive if done right
I think he looks weird because when he faces forward his mouth is still only to the side of his face but in older games his mouth was only on the side when he faced that way and whenever he faced forward his mouth would be on the front
I got to say... I disagree. Sonic does look weird, but that's not because of his environment. The Renders since Sonic 4 and Colors are bad, and it's not because the environment, they are PNG images. And I don't think the problem is happening because of the model as well. I love the Marza design. My biggest issue with the Modern Sonic is: The animation. Sonic's, and eveyone's design today was made because he needed improved animations. The shorter quills and hands makes it harder for them to clip inside eachother. The shoes are smaller for them to stretch when they run or stand. The head is smaller to be easier to animate them. The faces are modified for them to move eyebrows, eyelids, snouts, mouths, in a more cartoony way. And if you look in the Marza and Blur cgi Cutscenes, you can see they hit the mark with it. But... In game... Things are different. The characters don't strech, they don't move the eyebrows, only their eyelids, they don't move in a cartoony way, they just throw their arms in some directions and move their heads. Frontiers and Unleashed did it a bit better, their eyebrows move at least, but still not as Cartoony as it needs to be. And you can see this done right in other pieces of media that uses the Marza design. Sonic Dream Team and Sonic Prime all use the same design, but they are animated way better, and it looks awsome.
I've noticed that all of the time modern Sonic's design does actually look good is when he has an actual silhouette. For some reason Sega uses this model and always keeps his quills straight behind his head, this is to me a key feature why he looks weird, because he lacks the silhouette he's always had which always had at least 3 quills showing. I still think it's time for a new model, or one closer to what came before.
Sonic unleashed will be the only reason why I like the modern sonic. That opening cutscene was just so cool and badass man. sonic adventure was a pretty good sonic as well, it’s like a modern sonic but still has the classic look to him cause he is still short and stubby
I was wondering why i like the Sonic Runners model so much, now i understand it's because it fits in the wirld it was made for. Meanwhile Lost World, Forces, and especially Frontiers look weird cause the two designs clash with each other
kinda surprised you didnt also mention SA1 when calling SA2 "anime-style" SA1's "infamous" facial expressions are pretty clearly poor attempts at recreating anime-esque facial expressions into 3D i'd also like to mention the humans, which are the most "anime-like" out of the whole series, you can see that very clearly when looking at their faces.

Honestly Frontiers does pull it off the best imo. Unlike Lost World, which took place on an undescript planetoid around Sonic's planet with absolutely 0 context given surrounding it aside from "Zeti live here", the Starfall Islands are genuinely meant to feel out of this world (as in not like the "usual" Sonic environments), so seeing Sonic almost unchanged from his Unleashed model in it does not feel as bad as Lost World where it felt like the whole game was this super bizarre blend of Unleashed and Heroes. ... the less we talk about Forces, the better.

Sonic in sonic frontiers is kind of just the mario Odyssey situation again with areas like new donk city or.... (Inswet another example here) Supposedly, the argument being made is that they (mario and sonic) dont look like they belong in that more realistic environment whilst still being more cartoonish Well that's the point. Theyre in a world thats completely foreign to them and thus the art style contrasts them from the environments to show a sign of unfamiliarity
CG in Lost World and Colours is vastly superior to Generations. Unleashed is peak visual Sonic. Heroes and Shadow have good models, but poor execution (too much bloom, no textures, too much bloom, shiny plastic is bad, too much bloom, etc.) 06 has a great model (jiggle bones, better proportions) but a lack of expressions. "ClAsSiC" Sonic looks terrible in 3D regardless of the game. (Leave him in the 16 bit style where his physics actually work)
I disagree with keeping the model the same, sure it looks good but they’ve been using it for over a decade to the point where it’s gotten stale. Also the fact that he’s supposed to be heavily based on rubber hose cartoon characters, yet now a days his poses look so stiff. The model is also not good at facial expressions, with one of the main causes of that is the brows are so thin and basically nonexistent to the point where characters are forced to emote with their eyelids which doesn’t look good. All I’m saying is, Sonic and the rest of the cast could use a more fluid and dynamic visual upgrade.
But here's the thing, the current models of sonic and friends ARE good. They can pull off dynamic poses and cartoony expressions as Marza demonstrates time and time again with their cg Sonic Animations. Yeah the in-game models are a bit rougher, but all it takes is a few tweaks to make them better. In the end, it all comes down to the stiff posing, bland lighting, and bland animation that make them bad, not the models themselves.
@@acethehedge449 Ok fair enough, but they could at least get better facial rigs for the current models cause my point about they’re brows barely being able to move still stands.
Modern Sonic looks a lot better once Sega and Sonic team put more budget into actually animating him, but not just animating him, but finally since Shadow the hedgehog, are finally dabbling back into making the characters more stretchy and cartoony, cause I mean, they are
I feel ashamed to be part of this community man, you all just nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking.
@@Je-S1001 absolutely agree with you there
Sonic in a realistic enviroment is awesome
Modern Sonic looks a lot better once Sega and Sonic team put more budget into actually animating him, but not just animating him, but finally since Shadow the hedgehog, are finally dabbling back into making the characters more stretchy and cartoony, cause I mean, they are
I feel ashamed to be part of this community man, you all just nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking.
The only game that had a problem with the artstyle was lost world, the rest of the games do a good enough job of making sonic feel apart of their world.
Mabye it's not a 10/10 like the old games, but you talking about it like it ruins the entire game, come on
Honestly I don’t like sonic model now but not enough for me to complain and go on a rant I just go with the flow 😂
So they're not allowed to have an opinion?
And here you are complaining about others views and thoughts on a certain aspect of the series just becuase their's don't allgin with yours. I can't stand people like you
@@SuperSonicbros4 he can, but he presents it more as "here is an objective fact" not as "here is what i think about this", also it's something so small that it just feels like criticism for the sake of criticism
@@Theredblood Ok
Sonic looks fine to me
jesus, you're being so negative.
Hate how they’ve made Sonic Shorter and Fatter with each game.
Tails model is horrible. And quite far from his original design. His head and torso are too tall. And his whiskers are too big.
I gotta be honest.
Yall always complaining.
🤓☝
No we don't. Not all of them complain
@@SuperSonicbros4 ngl we kinda do
@@mrmelonman2893 That is not true and stop lying to your self
@@mrmelonman2893 the video itself is complaining.
Like what is you talking about that's a different freaking model
That's a forces model
Oh I see why you're talking about this because you're old Sonic fan 😑 and plus if you want to keep hitting on Sonic then just don't be a fan anymore
My Change For A Model Is This
1. Give Him 2 Eyes & Not What He Has Now, Make Him Like Movie Sonic
2. Realistic Fur Would Be A Nice Touch
3. Redesign His Shoes
4. Long Quils That Has Movement
Ok nice changes this my change for the model if they want a more stylish stlye
1. Make him look expressive
2. I made some tweeks to his shoes to be more like the hot dog like shoes from the adventure series
3.make him taller
and last but not least still keep the one eye it still looks good thats all
@@DavidBlaiseSGaela the hotdog shoes look ugly
@@DavidBlaiseSGaelaYes I agree they need to bring back the hotdog shoes
I thought i was literally the only one saying frontiers looked like a fan game ☠️
I never realized this and still don't. It looks fine man im used to this.
