Wikipedia:
Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.
Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). A number of Sonic games were also developed for Sega's 8-bit consoles, the Master System and Game Gear. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems. Takashi Iizuka has been the series' producer since 2010.
Sonic's recurring elements include a ring-based health system, level locales such as Green Hill Zone, and fast-paced gameplay. The games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman's schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros. Outside of video games, Sonic includes comic books published by Archie Comics, Fleetway Publications, and IDW Publishing; animated series produced by DIC Entertainment, TMS Entertainment, Genao Productions, and Netflix; a live-action film series produced by Paramount Pictures; and toys, including Lego construction sets.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million copiess by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.77 billion as of 2024. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, such as the 2006 game, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.

I honestly really like that, as Eggman interacts with Sonic more in the movies, he gets driven more insane and becomes gradually closer to actual Eggman. Like, that's just what Sonic does to a man
Funny enough, in the Archie Sonic comics, he managed to do just that and drove Eggman to insanity.
plus all that quill licking cant be good for the brain
@@ryuzakithecrux9652I feel like it was partially implied somehow Gerald’s long life was because he has Shadow’s Quill, so yeah those things have to be doing SOMETHING
That is the nature of blueblurian degeneracy lol
I agree
I will say in defence of Movie Robotnik's first look, no sane and rational person would have a shaved head and a moustache that makes his head statistically twice as wide
Edit: (sees 1k likes) Get a load of this!
But Movie Robotnik Was never sane or rational Ngl even before he went to the mushroom planet
@@gregoryairaoje He was clearly sane enough to get at at least one doctorate, make countless drones and have a "spotless performance record".
There is a difference between the man we first see and his original counterpart that stuffed animals into his robots
@@gregoryairaojeI wouldn’t say that. I’d say he was just eccentric. Once he got to the mushroom planet, that’s when he lost it
@@gregoryairaoje Sane enough to have at least one doctorate, have a "flawless record" and create all sorts of machines.
@@michaeliv284 Yeah I guess that's True But You have to admit even when when he was Somewhat Sane He was A little crazy
Actually I would argue his design in the first movie was more towards the story they were telling, rather than the latter that they had no faith. After watching all 3 movies I think its clear thats the story they were telling with him slowly transforming into Eggman which I actually really enjoyed
I really do enjoy the idea of this normal looking guy having the more refined name Ivo Robotnik then he slowly transforms into the insane Dr. Eggman
Its like Spidermans homemade suit in his movies, you see him refine the design till its the iconic one
He went out as the true Eggman.
He basically worked for the government in the first movie so the design makes sense with his character
yeah exactly. saying he's "a remnant of the era being ashamed of the source material" is kinda bad faith and ignoring who his character is supposed to be at that point. Especially when part of his criteria is "does this design tell us anything about what they're about?"
I think Robotnik's evolution through the movies does this near perfectly
5:37 The audio commentary of the first movie actually confirms they always view it as an origin story for both Sonic and Dr Robotnic.
No Dr. Kintober I see
You can't beat "PINGAS" 🗣🔥💯
Cultured!
As usual i see
Not even by yourself?
@@runningoncylinders3829 that's master baiting
I do that every night
Am I the only person who loves Robotnik's design from the first movie? It's a cool minimalist take on Eggman and it makes sense since he gradually becomes more crazy and evolves into the Eggman we know from the video games by the third movie. In the more grounded world the movies take place in it would be weird for Robotnik to look just like he does in the video games already in the first movie.
Nah I think it's great lol. It doesn't look like Eggman but it fits his story, and it's also just a fire outfit
Yeah, with the 3 movies done it's obvious they were going for a progressive transformation of eggo.
I genuinely love first movie Robotnik design, it was SLEEK. Not really Eggman-y at all, no, but a younger, more serious Ivo. Or as someone said, Ivo that is masking all his disorders behind a composed exterior and secret agent shtick
We gotta give him props for being the most handsome Robotnik too.
I actually really like jt
Non same for me
I honestly think the movie 3 jacket looks amazing. The lines are reminiscent of circuit boards further the cementing the idea he’s surrounded in machines, like the jacket has a functional purpose
Not only that, but it gives the impression of turning into a lifeless machine man, which is exactly what Gerald Robotnik was trying to do
I didn't even notice the details. I can get why they would make the overall design too busy, but I, overall, like the look a lot. It feels very true to Eggman.
Jim carrey is open for the fourth movie of course and I hope we get the jacket with out the extra computer board design
Like a happy mixture of sonic 06 design with the third movie design
@@pink-a-palouza7888I'm alright with that idea, but I'm in the preference of his Movie 4 design needs to be a mix of his Movie 2 outfit and Movie 3. The 06 design just doesn't set right when you're looking at a Realistic Game Outfit in the Sonic Franchise. Those round gold buckles do not work for Eggman.
I LOVE the circuit board design, It's SS tier for me.
I do get your point with movie 1A robotnik, but on the other hand, it’s not every day you get to see the man before the egg and besides, the design doesn’t really need to look like eggman because it makes sense for the context, he’s just a really smart government official. Plus it goes with the vibe of the movie that being an origin story.
Then he should have been Dr. Kintobor!
@ there are many reasons why he probably shouldn’t have been kintobor.
Firstly, most sonic fans haven’t read the fleetway comics, so making direct refrences to it may alienate them.
Secondly, Kintobor works because he’s to opposite of robotnik (even his name is backwards), movie robotnik is kinda already eggman as stated in the video minus the crazy and the look, so having him be kintobor would make people wonder why he reversed his name if he more or less the same.
It also turns into a subtle story of fatalism with Sonic 3 lore in context:
Gerald has been sporting the full Eggman look for 50 years. Ivo isn't just turning into Eggman- *he's turning into his mad scientist grandfather, the deeper he slips into insanity.*
@@TheSameGoobyGuyThe kintobor origin isn't exclusive to the UK comics, it was the definitive Robotnik origin that Sega of America wanted everyone to use. The UK comic was just the only one that BOTHERED to get it RIGHT.
2:49 reminds me of the whole “The Nega-Chin!” situation
XD
You mean The igga chin? Sorry the audio sounds like it
I just wonder why they went for that.
@@joshshrum2764 late '90 early '00 had an obsession with cutting words short willy nilly.
Something I like about Eggman is that he doesn’t dress like a typical evil scientist character, he’s more unique in that way
One of the best things about eggman is that he’s as much a showman as he is a scientist
DR eggman is in my top 3 iconic villains because he is so unique in his own way
The presentation
His gadgets,robots army
His robots designs
His motives

@@SpriteWorld1991I agree
He's feminist
Number 21 looks like a rejected character design from the Despicable Me movies.
Nice seeing you here man.
Here is my top 5:
5. Movie 3 (I do hate those tech lines, but he does look like Eggman.)
4. Nightmare Eggman (He looks cool.)
3. Satam Robotnik (He looks perfectly sinister.)
2. Boom Eggman (I love the Boom TV show, and I genuinely like the redesigns. This is one of the first designs I think of when I think of Eggman.)
1. Modern Eggman (I mean, duh. Of course it's the best.)
Finally, appreciation for Boom Eggman. Sometimes I honestly wish this design was some sort of upgrade when Robotnik decides to lift iron and become athletic
@@ashesGeek The funny thing is, even though he looks more athletic, he still isn't. And because of the cartoony design and the show's comedic tone, I never saw him as being fit.
Tbh, no, not really. The "tech lines" on the movie 3 design actually don't really detract that much from the design.
I will say, for me, it'll be difficult to make a Top 5 favorite list 😅 i like various designs in their own rights
I really like the Boom design, though.
If Pingas isn't in the top 5... I am turning you into a warlus.

27:39 Ive come to make an announcement, shadow the hedgehog is a b-
Honestly his look for movie 3 is perfect it takes all the best parts of the more modern 2000s look and makes it even better looking with the details around the collar and making it longer.
I actually like him having to earn his classic look and i think all of his film looks are good
movie 1 was basically the origin story of eggman, movie 2 was where he was actually the proper one we knew.
2:56 You can just say "Eggman Negative".
or just say Nega coz that's his name
@@1234_Flux Yeah, but he's terrified of what Twitter will do to him.
People care too much about what Twitter cates
Personally, I think there's an obvious difference between "nega" and the n-word, just focus more on the "eh" sound, don't make it sound like "ee".
@@1234_FluxThe main reason people don’t want to say that is that Nega is pronounced SO similarly to one of the worst slurs in Human history, so it’s just not a good idea
11:13 GOAT tier design for me because his big mustache and the yellow collar of his cape looks like a walrus--most likely a Beetles reference to 'I Am the Walrus'
"I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo-goo g'joob"
Also Eggman was always supposed to be a goofy/child like villian.
It's "Choo Choo Cachoo" actually 🤓
Good catch!
Yeah classic eggman is number 1 for me
I don't think ChannelPup understands the core charm of Eggman. Especially given how much weight he puts into something as arbitrary as "eyebrows not angry, wueh wueh".
Another detail I like about the master eggman design( my nickname for movie eggmans super form) is that the coat has the pattern of an actual emerald
Spinball Robotnik really freaked me out as a kid. He was much larger compared to Sonic, he didn't sound remotely human, and the first two bosses of the game creepily had HIS face on them, in greater detail than something like the Death Egg Robo.
Now that fits the us Sonic cd boss theme.
Special shoutout to Long John Baldry's performance as AoStH's Robotnik. Such a deliciously entertaining combination of a bumbling buffoon that can still sound sinister and threatening when the situation calls for it. One moment he'll be a pathetic yet endearing joke, and a destructively dangerous force the next. One of my favorite villains in fiction
And, of course, THE MEMES
Easily one of the best cartoon villain voice performances of all time. One of the most dynamic as well.
Eggman Nega is heat idk what ur talking about
fr
Yeah i didn’t agree it’s heat like the Sonic rush song was saying.
One of the best Eggman designs in my opinion.
I love how the yellow and black is meant to harken to a hazard warning sign
I think the reason why Eggman Nega looks like that is because he's supposed to be a corrupted Eggman, so his costume is similarly corrupted. It takes parts of his OG and even prototype design as well as the modern one and then flip it on its head. For an Eggman that is supposed to be a corrupted and more sinister and creepy Eggman, I think it works great!
come on we finally got the Accurate video games costume for Jim Carrey in movie 3 and your worried about those as you said spaghetti lines or circuit board? come on its just 1 small detail its basically the classic Eggman costume from the modern video games in live action finally
That's his best look to me
Leave it to TH-camrs to be picky ☠️
@@rebel2191It's a design ranking video, being picky is sort of the point.
I kinda get it, but then again you barely notice it in the movie. Heck he even mentions it isn’t that noticeable.
Yeah Pup just seems to be overly nitpicky i've noticed
One thing I WILL say. The fact Robotnick's classic look is so Jolly works for his logo.
Eggman's overly jolly smile can be intimidating, so letting him actually flash it around is really good.
Yeah, and considering Sega originally made the franchise to compete with Mario, his less outright villainous look sets him apart from, say, Bowser.
I don't think Movie Robotnik was "ashamed of the source material" like you said. He looks so different because this is before he went crazy. In the Movies, he was an esteemed and efficient scientist who ran on business and had a huge ego because nobody could beat him. But when Sonic proved him wrong and left him stranded in Mushroom Hill for months on end, he lost his mind and the elegance he once had, which is what transitions him into a form that more resembles the Eggman we know and love. And it's also reflected in how Movie Sggman goes by robotnik but embraces the Egg moniker in the other movies. I'm not gonna say Movie Robotnik was the best Eggman design by any means but for who the character was at the time, it makes more sense for a competant and serious scientist hellbent on tracking down Sonic to have this sleek, put-together look as opposed to an eccentric bald man with a crazy mustache who dresses in flashy, red clothing
Placing AOSTH Robotnik in number 2 is enough to give you a PRRRRROMOTION!
I have a soft spot for movie Robotnik's first look. I like how it leans more into the "Robotnik" name, where the sequels lean more into "Eggman"
I originally heavily disagreed with the #21 spot, but that point on what would eggman look like if he “won” made me rethink that immediately.
He would have absolutely given himself something far more important looking to boost his own ego haha
What's wrong with them having to earn the classic design? It's only a problem if it's executed poorly
It's become a trope, so it doesn't really hit well most of the time IMO. I'd prefer having confidence in the original style from the get go
@@NigelMelanisticSmithWhat do you mean, it's exactly as much of a trope as starting with a more Eggmanish design would be. And, like, what kind of a complaint is "It's become a trope" anyway? If you don't have tropes you don't have a movie at all- all a movie is is tropes, they are literally the building blocks of fiction.
What's wrong is sequels aren't always guaranteed
@@Izzyisneon ok, well what if the transformation happened half way through the movie
@jjb1908 it's the fact that most of the time they hold off on it until the sequel (or sometimes third sequel) or the final act, so you hardly get to see it or you never do.
20:35 I have to be honest I can not see those things in the actual movie, so it should not count
Modern Eggmans design REALLY shines in yuji uekawa's Dreamcast era artstyle
The colors, The exaggerated poses, limbs and expressions really compliment the modern look PERFECTLY
Plus i really like how his mustache is big and poofy in the artstyle lol
Every design rocked, because I made it. Period.
Funny how Eggman’s mustache is bigger in the end of Sonic 1 than the sequels
DAMN IT, MOVIE 3 WAS SO CLOSE. Your edit of that looks great!
I actually think the edit removed a lil too much. Namely there was a belt design around the waist where the zipper ended and there was a clasp there that looked off to me without the belt
I kind of **liked** the circuit board thing.. the jackets WERE designed by his grandfather, so I believe it makes sense why it's less 'clean' than previous movie outfits. It just makes a lot more sense to me that way, I personally love looking at it.
4:39 no it was obivously choosen because he is working as an actual professor/doctor and its meant to look intimidating
"This guy just looks jolly, he looks like santa claus's best friend" That's the whole appeal lol!! The fact he looks less villainous and more cute fits better with how the classic era is lower stakes. He was never really meant to be feared, he's more the funny harmless villain you know youre always gonna beat every time. More of a friendly rival. Honestly even though the classic games have no text or voices, I still imagine the dynamic to be like Boom Eggman. My main problem with Boom Eggman, honestly, is that his design looks really unfitting, he'd be genuinely threatening in any other show! So idk, peak "funny eggman" to me is the OVA version- similar personality to Boom, with the Classic design.
I feel we could kinda do two tier lists for which designs fit which personality of the character. Cute tier and scary tier? Its kinda fascinating how much he's changed over the years. I do agree that the Adventure design is peak for being able to work for both comedy and genuine villainy, though. Sonic X and IDW have the same design at the absolute opposite peaks of personality. Its great!
Also thanks for giving appreciation to Fleetway Robotnik! Dude was nightmare fuel of my childhood. Especially how he gets between his two designs by transforming into a weird egg cocoon, that was so gross for no reason lol. Bruh, did you really need to do all that just to switch outfits? He's so unreasonably creepy and it's really unique for the character.
My favorite part of the Sonic movies is that Robotnik starts off more grounded but becomes increasingly more unhinged after repeated encounters with Sonic and becomes more and more like Eggman
Continued proof the Uekawa redesigns were the best thing that happened to these characters.
One of the best parts about modern eggman is the iconic silhouette. It makes the modern eggman logo perfect in its simple yet iconic design.
-Video game Eggman became crazy due to not being able to kill Sonic
-Movie Eggman became crazy after being banished to a deserted planet by Sonic, and then became 10x crazier after Super Sonic beat him in Sonic 2 since in the deleted scene in Sonic 3 revealed that Sonic practically almost killed his and resulted in being isolated from the world
In defence of the tech on Robotnik’s Sonic 3 suit makes sense when it has that transformation abilities (scorpion and mantis claws).
Aw hell yeah! Long John Baldry's Robotnik is in a league of his own.
He's by far the best part of that cartoon.
There's a video on youtube compiling all of AoStH Robotnik's lines from across the whole show, and it's honestly peak cinema.
16:51 I think they added the deep eye bags to give his eyes a dark look almost imposing his traditional circular shades
The thing about Eggman Nega's design is that it's supposed to be an inversion of Eggman's design, that of course applies to him having a black coat and red jumpsuit in comparison to Eggmans Red coat and Black jumpsuit, but I think it's meant to apply to the rest of his design & character as well. Eggman looks technological & militaristic, Nega looks goofy and casual. Eggman has undertones of respect for his enemies, Nega PRETENDS to respect them. Eggman wants to control the world, Nega has no qualms killing even himself if it means he can destroy everything in the process.
In short: Eggman looks like a dictator, but you CAN reason with him (under the right conditions.) Nega looks approachable, but is a complete monster. (This might also be why they drew some inspiration from Eggman's classic look, the "cape" & red jumpsuit make him look vaguely heroic, which could play into Classic Eggman's narcissism)
Side note, but this is also why I don't like some of Ian Flynn's writing choices, I love his work for the most part, but he seems to be stuck in the mindset that he's still writing for Archie/Satam Robotnik, and doesn't like Eggman Nega as a result for being a "carbon copy" which doesn't track unless you're specifically comparing Nega to Archie Eggman.
25:25 Im glad my glorious king got far
I searched up “who is sexy red” and all I saw was robotnik
i cant see the 2nd place eggman design without thinking of “SNOOPING AROUND AS USUAL I SEE”
We have to get a sonic design ranking from movie free riders and the original 90s everything
😩 I did the models. It was exhausting. 😂
i understand the criticism of the weird tech lining on the movie 3 final suit, like it does look tacky, but I still really like that design for Eggman. I like the adjusted shaping of the front and back coat tails which make it look more sleek and more like a lab coat, I like the big collar which was present in the movie 2 main suit, I like the tech gauntlets mixed with the white gloves, it was just very satisfying to look at, IMO. sure, there's some things that definitely could have been better, but I really like the way it looks overall. also shoutout to them paying extra homage to the modern design by changing his goggle lenses from red to green, that was a nice touch methinks-
I also really like the collar. I just wish it weren't so ribbed.
@@ChannelPup yeah that's fair actually, like that's another thing where like, it looks cool for the suit but just a bit overdesigned-
the adventures of sonic the hedgehog voice actor still one my top teir face ways to hear eggman in my head
I love the circuit board look on movie 3’s final look
Video suggestion: The evolution of Robotnik in the Sonic movies and how Jim Carrey really did amazing in the role
21:15 I agree that your edit made the suit look much better.
I feel crazy because I can't find any other person that thinks it looks cooler unedited
Even though the design for the first movie is bland for the 1st movie, I love that in each movie he turns more and more into the Robotnik we all know and love and how Sonic the hedgehog changed Robotnik every time Sonic defeats him at the end.
Modern Eggman is like Spider-Man's red and blue suit; just iconic
Can we get Eggman in the Channel Pup drip?
We can try!
The final suit from the 3rd movie made tears come from my eyes. One of my favorite parts of the movie was seeing him wear it. I love it to death.
23:03 agreed best version of each style of Dr. Eggman.
Still prefer normal modern though.
Personally, my favourite design is Mister Tinker, from IDW. It was fairly short-lived, but I love the little glimpse into who Eggman could have been - who he very well might have been, were he not consumed by his own ego. It takes his modern design and makes it... friendly. Instead of an imperial red jacket with clasps and zippers, he has faded green overalls with big ol pockets full of tools. Instead of the black undersuit covering his hips and legs, he's got a pinkish red shirt tucked into the overalls with a big white collar folded down over it, sort of flipping the layering of the design upside down. Eggman has big ol boots, Mister Tinker has silly little slippers. And of course, instead of those big arching furrowed brows, his expression is gentle and friendly. Bro's main character artwork is the embodiment of :D
Mister Tinker absolutely *does* look like the kind of guy whose idea of "Eggman land" is a dinky lil homemade themepark in his shed that he made so the neighbourhood kids had somewhere to play. And that's exactly the type of guy he is! Idk, I just really love him, it's really cool how drastically different his vibes are when he's literally just Modern Eggman with a different outfit and demeanour. And it's a really interesting look into the good side of Eggman, which is still very much affecting the story to this day (like the part in Metal Virus where he's mocking the lifestyle Mister Tinker lead and then just sort of trails off and solemnly looks down at the villaige he just destroyed, that fucking ruined me)
why oh why does this man need zips on his arms
Robotnik is helped to be intimidating by Shadowing him. Classic Robotnik can look scary when Shadowed too.
True! Lighting and composition do a lot for a design.
I like the concept of movie Eggman's look being influenced by his scuffle with his nemesis
Honestly the thing I like about classic Eggman is that it kinda makes sense in my eyes. This is a Robotnik that just is starting out. His machines are a lot more basic and less advanced, he probably had bein a regular guy just a few days ago and this probably was his casual outfit that he just added a tiny little kape too. It isnt until later, where is Empire is more formed and he acually controlls a few smaller chunks of the planet that he transitions into a new proper outfit.
I also honestly like the first movie design. Cause one thing to remember, Robotnik is a goverment agent at this point. So he HAS to look more professionol and cant run around in exaggeratet red flight suits. Once he no longer is tied to the goverment he stops caring and goes fore just wearing the flight suit all the time. Altaugh thats also probably because hes in the thick of it, while the black clothes probably where is casual work clothes. But yeah I liked the transition from what, atleast appearance vise, looks like a normal human into the meniacle Doktor Eggman we all know over the course of the movies.
If I remember the gold clasps on 06 eggman were made like that from a scrapped idea where whenever eggman would be in his mechs pipes would come down and attach to those circular clasps almost locking him into the mech so he wouldn’t be thrashed around so much when sonic fights him which honestly is something I wish they did I would have loved to have seen that
True, Sonic Adventure series introduced probably the most iconic and memorable look of Dr. Eggman and I doubt it would ever be outmatched with anything that is not just a variation of it but something entirely new.
17:21 you know what else is massive
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
His battleship :)
LOOK AT THAT, IT LOOKS LIKE TWO BALLS AND A BONG
Funny thing about No. 7 is that at the time it was given to Robotnik, it was around when Gerald's true plan to destroy the Earth was revealed, including them, so it was basically funeral attire.
Personally I really like the classic Eggman design, especially the OVA. He's got the biggest body of all the classic Eggmen and he's also really expressive, using his actual eyes a lot ("Modern" Classic Eggman does this too in stuff like Mania Adventures and the Superstars prequel shorts). Despite his more outlandish design, he feels more grounded and human because of stuff like that, which endears him more to me
As far as being considered the definitive look of the character AoStH Robotnik was kind of that for us westerners for most of the 90s, as outside of his own cartoon his design was most often the one being used in official merchandise along with on the American artwork for some of the Game Gear games and for his McDonald's Happy Meal toy promoting Sonic 3 on the Genesis. Not to mention giving him his own spin-off game with Mean Bean Machine.
Of course this was all part of the whole westernization efforts being done for the franchise at the time, so even though he did still have an official Japanese design as Eggman I guess Sega of America figured they could more easily pass off a very different design for him for western audiences when he was otherwise just seen as a 16-bit sprite in the Genesis games. That all changed with the Dreamcast and the redesigned look of all of the characters that was introduced with the Adventure games, where what we now know as the Modern Eggman design from those games became the new official look for him that AoStH Robotnik was for us in the 90s, along with there now being a greater synergy between us and Japan as far as localizing the games and having less of our own separated style and canon for them.
I really like movie 1 robotniks design overall, it gives depth into who and what he looks like before becoming eggman, you cant deny he has style and a damn good haircut
12:14 He does look like silly menace, who’s evil in ways like Dr Doofenshmirtz. Evil for a hobby, a day job
Tbh Mr. Dr. Eggman’s design would be mostly fixed if they gave him a cool cape, and a military dictator hat, kinda like M Bison
Okay, you lost me when you decided to put Movie 3A HIGHER than the Movie 3C look! Just because you don't like the circuit patterns!? Don't ever let this man cook again.
You'll be fine.
21:16 I have to say I like it, I do like the red belt that goes around the belly of Eggman. Thinking about how the new movie 3 toys are made, the belt actually works well with the the movable waist while the toy of the movie 2 outfit figure breaks kinda bad without it.
As a kid, my first exposure to 06 was a youtube video of all the cutscenes simply called "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie" sometime before Lost World came out. Good luck finding that in the year 2024 lmfao. But in it, the changes made to the environments compared to Sonic Colours and the olympics (the only sonic games I had played at that point) made sense for a movie adaptation for someone who was vaguely familar with stuff like how transformers looked as toys compared to the live actions movies. Eggman's redesign and his sleeker, less cartoony robots also contributed to this, along with the human characters and grand scale. So as a kid, my first though after finishing what I thought was a theatrical Sonic movie was..."they should make a game out of this"
I didn’t know that someone else came across that video
Are you referring to this?

If the live action costume didn’t have that extra detail then it would give it that “cosplay look” that looks flat, cheap and goofy. You need a bit extra detail around open areas on the costume otherwise it ends up looking bad on camera
You don’t notice it in the film but you would definitely notice if it was just gone lol maybe tech spaghetti isn’t the exact route but some extra detail to prevent dead zones on the costume otherwise
Rewatching the film on the home release I figured as much, as it does look better in the film.
I've seen fan art where they just replaced the wires with layers of fabric that were a different shade of red. Like a stripe. I think that'd look a lot better.
I like that movie Robotnik's goggles mimic the black-and-red eyes of SatAM/AoStH Robotnik.
Happy New Year’s Eve man
Happy New Year's Eve!
I now need Jim Carrey as Waluigi for the next Mario movie
I think Classic Eggman doesn’t get as much respect as he should. What makes him so interesting as a villain is because he doesn’t look like one from the surface. He after all rarely fights people hand to hand, he has no wear and tear of battle on him, and he takes a lot of joy into making many of his creations part of theme parks, casinos, and worlds of whimsy. I like to see that as part of what Eggman so sinister and why no one aside from Sonic seemed to want to stop him back then: For many he seemed just like a jolly old man to not take seriously, and he only becomes scary when his real scary creations come online, like his death egg or metal sonic. He doesn’t have to be scary, his creations do that for him. And it adds to how childish and bumbling he is when after you finally strip him of all of his tech, he isn’t really meant to do a bowser thing where you take him on directly as the final fight: just the mechs he pilots.
He’s like if the Oncler was a villain: He starts small, makes places that seem cute and lively, only to become scary to most when it’s far too late for anyone but Sonic to stop him
Take a shot every time Pup says decadent
I like the circuit board design from Movie 3 because it fits the world's theme. Not many people get it, but Sonic the Hedgehog is a cyberpunky universe.
Choice #2 was wild.
Seeing each number go by, knowing the Adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog design is moving higher and higher made me so extremely happy. Truly is my favorite design for the round man
Happy to see the fleetway versions getting a lot of love. They are brilliant
The movie Robotnik's first look makes sense, he was a governmental associetes guy before going insane at the end
Ngl personally for me Robotnik is at his absolute PEAK when he can make the 8D face.
You can go all the way into making him total nightmare fuel but to me blank eyes + sharp toothy smile is the most sinister he can look. And I love how this is the face of an otherwise more cartoony design. The contrast is great. Classic cartoon Eggman is just chef's kiss
I have to agree, Aosth Robotnik is the second best, he is just a perfect depiction of him. Despite the design difference and he is still pretty faithful to his game counterpart as he wears red, black and yellow/or golden, has an overgrown mustache and a bald head like his other portrayals, and the black and red eyes are just sinister and perfect
Just because I've seen two of your videos where you discussed the Chaos Council and how Mr Dr Eggman isn't a fully functional Robotnik- you get that the Egg Council are all different aspects of Robotnik split into separate people? - his acting like a big baby, his pretentiousness, his megalomania etc are all separated off into the different members.
The hybrid Adventures/Fleetway/Modern design looks pretty damn threatening.
I'm glad that Eggman changes through the movies. It doesn't feel like when no way home reframed the home trilogy as spider man origin story of that universe, it feels like they intended it from the start
One thing we cant deny about the 90s americanization of Sonic, they kinda nailed it with the cartoony Eggman design
I really just enjoy how much Movie Eggman’s design evolved in each movie
It wasn't until watching this video I realized AOSTH Robotnik looks kinda like Squidward .
It's the Bert nose and big eyes LuL
you could always say “Negative Eggman” instead of Nega since that’s what it’s short for
Negative Eggman makes him sound like a massive downer. 😂 But you are right. Honestly, Sol Eggman is the name I'd go for. Nice quick abbreviation that does what it says on the tin.
Maybe Solbotnik if I'm feeling a bit zesty.
@ yeah lol
Solbotnik is pretty good
I want to see Super Robotnik in the actual Sonic art style
Love the Fleetway love
His imposing, powerful and GIGANTIC stature was and is incredible
He's a mad scientist who CAN crush your skull with his bare hands and he'd do it with utter glee, the only reason he doesn't is because it would be more fun to see a buzzsaw run through your beating heart
Ngl I kinda forgot the classic robotnik fit exists cuz I have seen fleetway robotnik so much
Y’know, after Frontiers and Sage becoming the newest member of the Robotnik family, I think it’s safe to say Sage is the reason Eggman Nega has white hair. Sage perhaps found a way to continue the bloodline and future Robotnik’s after her have white hair.
I don't think we'll ever know Jeff Fowler's original vision beyond what he says. He has said ugly Sonic was not his first choice whatsoever, and concept art suggests that the chaos emeralds were supposed to be the macguffin instead of Sonic's quill. And concept art for the third film reveals his attachment to a scene of Maria and Shadow on the moon (perhaps to reflect Sonic and Shadow sitting on the moon), Robotnik's crab mech being introduced at an abandoned gas station in Mexico, and Super Sonic and Shadow traveling back in time to save the earth after the Eclipse Cannon destroyed it once.
