That seems to apply to basically every Sonic game since at least SA2. In fact, Iizuka had to literally BEG Sega for six more months to better optimize Frontiers, with the trade-off that he and all of Sonic Team would be fired if the game didn't review well (sales aren't usually an issue for Sonic games except in the most extreme cases). Fortunately, Frontiers did well and everyone kept their jobs, for now. The devs I feel worst for are the Rise Of Lyric devs at Big Red Button -- they built ROL not knowing it was for WiiU, which the engine was NEVER designed to work with. Sega refused to give BRB the extra months necessary to port it to a more compatible engine, so they had to basically hack the engine they had -- including calling the engine devs for as much documentation as possible -- to get the game to run at all. Naturally they got blamed (and fired) for a bad game when in reality they pulled off a minor miracle.

I thought the game was great, I beat it 100% on Steam un-modded without too much difficulty.
I'll admit I did buy the game when it came out cause I loved Colors so much on the Wii that I would have been willing to own a re-release to play on the Switch, but after playing through a bit of Tropical Resort again I haven't touched it in quite a while. Though it's not because I was having any experience with those notorious game-breaking glitches that were being talked about online. I was aware of them already, but I figured if I put the game aside for a while then in enough time I'd trust that they'd put out some kind of software update that would fix most of the game's issues. Either way I already still own my original Wii game so I was always going to have that to fall back on if this remaster really is going to be that bad. It isn't like Sega hasn't been known for putting out bad remasters/ports of older Sonic games before (Sonic 1 on GBA), but at least I know that when you can't count on Sega to fix any of these games then we already have a wonderfully talented Sonic fandom that will do it for them, so I'm not too surprised to hear that someone would have with Ultimate by this point.
This is great! I was disappointed that Colors Ultimate was bad, since I enjoyed the Wii original so much. Now I’ll have a reason to get the remaster! Just need to figure out how to get this mod on a Switch copy.
I can save you the heartache and tell you now that mods only work on PC. If your computer can run the game, that's the only way you can play a mod like this.
I actually completed the remaster which is how I completed sonic colors for the first time. I’ve never had a problem on switch, I just wish they just ported the Wii version to switch instead of a flat out remaster. Overall it’s not the worst remaster out there there are worse ones
probably been said here but it's just insane to me that it's been three years since colours ultimate came out, i still remember when people were joking about how terrible it looked lol
Sonic Colors Ultimate was my first experience with Sonic Colors, but honestly the issues you talk about didn't bother me much. What does bother me is that... I just don't find it very fun to play, a lot of the levels feel like they're designed to slow you down at nearly every opportunity possible. I never felt like I was able to achieve the state of flow I can in Sonic Generations levels and I missed it greatly.
This was the first sonic game I ever played and I think I played it when a lot of bugs were patched. I still had an awesome time, tho it sucks it’s somehow become my least favorite sonic game I’ve played. I’m yapping about sonic colors ultimate, not the fan made fix up
Wow that cutscene change is very impressive! At this point SEGA has become so reliant on fans keeping the Sonic IP alive that I almost feel like they cut corners on purpose... It's sad to see that one of the few IPs which back in the 90's and early 2000's could compete with the likes of Mario is not given the same treatment both in game development and branding. Although I am excited for SonicxShadow Generations, I'm still concerned about how much SEGA leans in on nostalgia and the fans to keep the IP alive. To me, the development of sonic games is a lot like the development of Pokemon games (Pokemon as a whole has so many other factors and is much larger, so I'm just talking about video games), lacking in innovation, leaning on nostalgia, low resource allocation, and relying on fan creations / interactions to keep the brand relevant.
I bet Sonic Colors Ultimate: Re-Rainbow and Sonic P-06 are gonna be so much better than Sonic Omens! X3 And in case Sonic X Shadow Generations is gonna suffer the same fate as Sonic Colors Ultimate, then it deserves the same kind of improvement/fixed mod as Re-Rainbow and Sonic Origins Ultrafix have.
Take a look out for Sonic and the Secret Rings. There is already work on revamping from the ground up. If Sonic Secret Rings is fixed finally then I wonder how they can handle Sonic Synergy (probably not going for the final build of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric)
@@probium2832 Both games according to J fall under E tier (Games that are terrible) and I think he places Shadow the Hedgehog in that same category as well
it's a shame sega doesn't give two fucks about actually releasing a worthwhile product. they know sonic is one of the biggest and most powerful fan vases out there and they 100% take their fans for granted. absurd that they thought SCU was in any condition to be released. it's awesome that the fans setup up to fix the games but it's unfortunate that they're basically forced to do so when sega manages to fuck up time and time again.
I have played both, and after a couple months of patches, SCU was fine. But no one wants to pay $60 MSRP for fine, especially for a texture and resolution bump of a wii game. The one thing that SCU has over SC Wii is the perfect homing attack, which helps SC out a ton because of how stingy SC is with boost energy. I think Tails Saves over lives works but not as well as the Origins Coins system, and restoring the lives system can make a few levels really stupidly painful. That being said, the biggest fundamental issue of SC remains unaddressed; Filler levels. There's a really good hack of SC Wii that restores the original level order; As in, Two Acts per Zone. There are mind numbing filler levels in Sonic Colors, true abominations where you stand around and wait on an elevator. There is one mod that addresses it for SCU but requires a complete save and only lets you play the level order in the weird time attack mode which you have to beat in one sitting. Re-Rainbow looks great. I commend the team for their work. I'll likely download it and play it in tbe future. But it will not be definitive IMHO.
NGL Ppls complaints of the current SCU seem incredibly trivial to me. This isn't a GTA trilogy remastered case. It's more of a SA2 Battle and SA DX case. Fundamentally still the exact same game
I think you're missing the point: the issue here lies that it's a poor remastering of Sonic Colours, a great game infamous for being trapped on the Wii for many years, never ported to anything else. You can't really compare it anything, especially ADX because that's been updated; said update used as the basis for multiple ports since releasing on the GameCube (@BlazeHedgehog makes a cool video that includes a brief porting history). ADX and A2B have both been ported at least once to modern platforms, handled with relatively greater care. While they aren't perfect ports, THOSE are nearly the same games as they were when released on the GameCube, but Sonic Colours Ultimate was handled very poorly and acts as a damaged-through-transit parcel. I don't believe it can classify as "fundamentally", "exactly" the same game because its core has shifted with unnecessary additions like the park tokens, Tails Save, the Jade Wisp changing levels' design to accomodate its inclusion (this may be the 2nd worst), Metal Sonic's inclusion as a rival race mini-game, all while being built in a different game engine. The least a remaster should do is graphical touch-ups and improved fidelity, maybe upated, clearer audio - like the saying goes "don't fix what wasn't broken." But if you like SCU how it is, more power to you.
@@Meowlegend7Because it’s Amazing! The Remaster is Mid. Not Shit, Sonic Looks like he put too Much Hair Gel on his spines. But the Quality & resolution was Okay but everything else sucks.

I might buy the game after the mod is finished for a BIG discount. It feels kind of shitty paying for the remaster even then, though, since all the work done to make it worth anyone's while wasn't done by Sega.
I gotta be honest, when so many of sonic games need to install so many mods to make these games "good" I think at that point it's not that worth playing these games to me

@@sambridgers9543 that wasn't really a remaster, it was a port. for it to be a remaster, it'd have to be released on more powerful, higher-fidelity hardware than the original system

This mod truly makes it an actual Ultimate way to play the game but there's still ways to go.
To this day, I say the best version of Sonic Colors is the DS version.
Great video! Haha, "deep-fried" 😂
I love this game so I'm glad someone made a mod to fix the horrible re-release
I actually completed the remaster which is how I completed sonic colors for the first time. I’ve never had a problem on switch, I just wish they just ported the Wii version to switch instead of a flat out remaster. Overall it’s not the worst remaster out there there are worse ones
this mod is a genuine masterpiece.
Sonic fans do what they do best taking some of the worst games and turning them into goats
Yes they are turning into best games again from the lazy worst game too.
I finished the story, got S ranked on every level, and then one day the save data completely deleted itself. I haven’t played the game since.
probably been said here but it's just insane to me that it's been three years since colours ultimate came out, i still remember when people were joking about how terrible it looked lol
While Colors getting the P06 treatment us great i still just cannot believe Sega absolutely refuses to learn from 06 and not rush out their games
why did. my dumbass think scu means. sonic. cinematic universe 😭
Nice to see TWIP vid again
Finally it's worth something. The mod should be integrated officially.
I bet Sonic Colors Ultimate: Re-Rainbow and Sonic P-06 are gonna be so much better than Sonic Omens! X3
And in case Sonic X Shadow Generations is gonna suffer the same fate as Sonic Colors Ultimate, then it deserves the same kind of improvement/fixed mod as Re-Rainbow and Sonic Origins Ultrafix have.
Take a look out for Sonic and the Secret Rings. There is already work on revamping from the ground up. If Sonic Secret Rings is fixed finally then I wonder how they can handle Sonic Synergy (probably not going for the final build of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric)
@@probium2832 Both games according to J fall under E tier (Games that are terrible) and I think he places Shadow the Hedgehog in that same category as well
@@johnshea7871 Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is also an E-tier. I think he might have reevaluated Sonic Genesis GBA to be F-tier?
@@probium2832 Lost World 3DS may be either E or F as J had a hard time deciding

Re rainbowed sonic cycle anyone?
Nice Video.
first but not first
i love when sonic comes from this channel... thanks for content... good job!
Don't know if I can get this to work on my Steam Deck, but from what I'm seen of the mod, it looks great!
ehh is there any scolor mods that add junkie XL music or smth
boost sonic is just burnout revenge as a platformer after all

Actually, Sonic didn’t fall in the original game. That was a glitch exclusive to Colors Ultimate. They just made it look good.
it's a shame sega doesn't give two fucks about actually releasing a worthwhile product. they know sonic is one of the biggest and most powerful fan vases out there and they 100% take their fans for granted. absurd that they thought SCU was in any condition to be released. it's awesome that the fans setup up to fix the games but it's unfortunate that they're basically forced to do so when sega manages to fuck up time and time again.
I actually never hated the remaster
It’s just the lighting on Sonic imo
@@faz10do that one thing I didn’t like
@@Toysonicandfriends2 yeah because the actual game is fine
I've always hated it since it was announced and stuck to not buying it.
Now all that's left is to fix some of the slower levels
Sonic fans really be out here fixing a billion dollar company’s mistakes
Don't know how I feel about the Unleashed models in Colors. They look oddly flat without the advanced lighting Unleashed had.
Megaman zero/zx 5 years later when?
Sonic Colors is always awesome.
Because its Sonic Colors
@@Meowlegend7Because it’s Amazing! The Remaster is Mid. Not Shit, Sonic Looks like he put too Much Hair Gel on his spines. But the Quality & resolution was Okay but everything else sucks.
@@kolkagaming1234 agreed.
Ehh idk, never really liked it
@@blackdot105 Maybe give it another go & yet to Look at it’s positive.
Be careful of the ego stroking, we might just get another Sonic Omens from this.
I thought colors ultimate came out in 2019 for some reason
id love a mod of this game that lets you skip all the color sections
My first time EVER pre ordering a game was recently in July for ordering shadow x sonic generations and I'm so hyped to play it and see if you make a review on it
Sonic unleashed needs a remaster
Nah I don’t think so and also it’s because sonic unleashed has never made a pc steam port ever. The original version of sonic unleashed since 7th gen.
The only thing that Sonic Unleashed needs is a shadow under Sonic so I know where I'm at with the werehog platforming.
A PC version would be amazing though hot damn playing Sonic Unleashed on the Series X was amazing.
Yeah and Sega gonna fuck it up.
Liked faster than Sonic
I might buy the game after the mod is finished for a BIG discount. It feels kind of shitty paying for the remaster even then, though, since all the work done to make it worth anyone's while wasn't done by Sega.
Mod has been locked on game banana
I gotta be honest, when so many of sonic games need to install so many mods to make these games "good" I think at that point it's not that worth playing these games to me
Hey J, ever considered playing the Silent Hill games?
J, can you please cover the Classic Sonic improvement mod for Forces? It basically fixes classic Sonic in that game.
I know this isn't the point of these videos but: how can Sega not be deeply ashamed that bedroom programmers are remastering their games on lunch breaks better than their multi-million dollar company? (I know it wasn't in house but this was still their project)
I love your videos man but this is not the worst Sonic remaster at all
Yeah, Sonic Genesis on GBA was the worst.
@@sambridgers9543 i already got genesis megadrive for retroarch already so i do not need gba port unless it's unoffical.
@@sambridgers9543 that wasn't really a remaster, it was a port.
for it to be a remaster, it'd have to be released on more powerful, higher-fidelity hardware than the original system
Sonic adventure DX
@@mothwhomightnotbetrustworthy again that was a GameCube port not a remaster
"The worst Sonic remaster is good now?"
Personally, I think that goes to Sonic Adventure DX. I'm sorry, but if a remake does major damage to the original's reputation, that is much worse than being extremely glitchy at launch.
You're saying that like this didn’t make the game's reputation worse.
@@AidGum But the damage done to Sonic Adventure's reputation was way more.
Heh Nintendo GameCube has a crappy glitchy port launch including shadow 2005 which it was a problem with the controls.
@@PauClaireIsUnderratedAF heh but not the original Dreamcast it got a crappy reputation on the GameCube.
@@josephfrye7342 Well, a lot of people are saying that Sonic had a rough transition to 3D and that the Game is bad and buggy. Then they proceed to show footage from the DX version.
If you like this mod you should defs give Sonic Forces Overclocked a go, it's a sequel story that fixes a ton about the game, it's really good for what it is
