I found out about your channel because I sent my brother a photo of my living room and he said that Nick would not approve because I didn't have the front legs of the couch on the rug. I asked him who the hell Nick was, and he told me about your channel. My brother sadly passed away last year but I'm very thankful to him for sharing this channel...I've learned a lot!
Martha here, who had the first space with the "nicotine" colored walls. Thanks to Nick for adding to what he said in the member video. Very helpful. I especially like the idea of a coffee table.
@@randiD123 Good idea, thinking of covering chairs in orange, I know how to upholster so would be easy. Harder to find the right rug but Nick had some nice options. Other thought is using chairs with more fabric. I do have more leaves for table and more chairs so I can fill the space a bit more.
You mentioned that you are curious about your viewers. Well, I am a 60+ retired grandmother living in North Carolina. Your input is much appreciated and my daughter and I both enjoy your sense of humor.
US Marine here! Been subscribed for a long time. I'm just amazed how Liam got such a nice barracks room. I've always had spaces half the size being shared by at least 3 people.
I love that Liam from the barracks wrote in for advice. I enjoy hearing from all the different demographics and hearing what Nick advises for them. It's real life with real people in their very real spaces, which makes it incredibly relatable. Keep up the good work, Nick!
You said you want to know more about your viewers ... Well, I'm a writer from Germany and the room descriptions in my novels have become so much more vivid since I watch your channel! Before it has mostly been variations of Gen X style (doesn't help that I write cyberpunk), but learning about different styles is actually a great way to to make the characters who live in those spaces a bit more interesting and well-rounded, and decribing an general mood is often also way more descriptive than listing and describing all furniture pieces. Probably not what you were aiming for, but still some positive impact ♥ I love your channel, I love your humor and I hope you continue enjoying making these videos.
that is wild seeing a barracks room in this video. i was in the military for 8 years, and for the first 2 years i had roomates, and even then after my room was never that big. i know all i ever cared about was having a cozy space to try to infuse any bit of individuality i could. straight up, really impressed with Liam already
GREAT roasting video! Liam, Get COMMAND hooks to hang art. They will not harm the walls at all. There's a huge variety to pick from to meet your needs. (I'm a veteran, so get living in barracks can sux). A tension rod for a window treatment may be a great option as you won't have to mount any hardware. The best rule for how wide you need the curtains is triple the width measurement. So if the window is 48", x 3 = 144" total width needed. I'd also consider swapping out your bed spread to something less busy. Perhaps a solid color that is close to the color of the wood veneer furniture drawers. That'll make it look more intentional. Great idea to contact Nick for advice.
Specifically the command hooks with a plastic backing and a metal prong for the hook. They are so much more versatile and easier to remove than the clunky plastic ones.
60 year old lady living in a 200 year old house. Makes me feel young. You inspired me to work on the library shelves and add accent lighting to them .thanks😊
I do love putting my feet up though! I prefer to recline and/or drape myself over furniture if I can get away with it, so an ottoman is really the most polite way to do that... 😂
For the first one, i also think maybe a square rug under a round table might look a bit more balanced. Definitely change the colour, but consider the shape as well (4:02)
So glad, Nick, that your roasts are gentle and constructive. By the way. and to add to your demographics, I'm a 78 years young woman who lives in a small Craftsman nestled in the woods.
When my British relatives visited us colonials in the backwater that is Canada, they were gobsmacked by our sophistication and continental esthetic. My aunt couldn’t imagine I actually owned bottles of French perfume! I love both Nick and DD, although my taste is more Sophie Paterson. Go figure - it must be the Brit in me! I am delighted your favourite TH-cam designers are Canadians. They both make us proud🇨🇦
Liam!! Lamps, curtains, rugs STAT! Maybe a plant or two. Photos of your family and friends. You’ll have that place feeling like home in no time 🙂 thank you for your service!
He could also potentially do some peel and stick wallpaper, though I, like Nick, have no idea what he’s allowed to change/do. But definitely more closed door storage for things, a rug, curtains, and a big plant for the corner (fake, in case he’s deployed or not around much).
Charlotte, I have an idea in my second time through this video. I suggest hanging your guitar on the wall (unless it has super need of humidification). In my music room I hang a couple of guitars plus an electric violin. Keeps them from falling over and looks cool. The djembe's on a shelf would complete the look.
My suggestion for Martha is to change up ONE shape in dining area....round lamp, round table, round rug.....hang the TV and make that the coffee table.
I love this so much!!!! Nick's not mean at all but he still gets his point across. A grey day, yuch mood, then found this. Yes! Also, I would love if Nick would use some sort of computer program to actually edit the photos so we could imagine his suggestions better. But I'm sure he's very busy already.
41 y.o. woman from Northeastern Europe. I love to shock my sister with revelations like kitchen cabinets have to reach the ceiling and TV has to be not more than 2/3 of the TV console. She said that nowadays TVs are so big that where would you get that long console. 😂
Another idea for Martha. Put the leaf in the brown wood table to make it larger and replace the chairs with un-matched, but coordinating chairs that have texture and/or color.
My spouse would go nuts with unmatched chairs! I have thought that chairs that are otherwise the same but with different upholstery would be nice and dramatic.
@@marta150 Temporary tester fix: drape different colored shirts over the chair backs to see what colors work in the space (like the chair is "wearing" the shirt).

Wonderful episode - very gentle and constructive advice. Nick Lewis Quote of the Week: "Do I have to call the Pentagon?" And yes - you have a world-wide audience, including here in Australia. ❣
Totally unrelated but I have to thank you for making me laugh with your videos. I’ve been going through a really rough time the last several months and you’ve brought some much needed laughter and joy into this difficult period of my life 🤍🤍🤍 keep on roasting 😂
Nick, I’m a 66 year old lady, fairly recently divorsed living in my own little house, sort of arts and crafts, but in feminine colors- teals, yellows, tans.
I think bold paint colors can be intimidating when starting to paint, but by the time you’re finished and have time to adjust, it’s just a beautiful color. Go for it, people!
14:13 It's possible that Charlotte's 'creepy' chair is for playing her guitar and she sits there in the corner to practice. More comfortable for such than sat on the sofa. Love these roastings!
As a 39yo with a kallax as a media unit, i feel called out... Tho mine is the actual ikea kallax tv bench variant with 4 regular squares at the bottom (but I use the door and shelf inserts) and 2 rectangles above the regular squares that are half the height of the regular square (used for the satellite box in 1 & dvd player in the other). Its also raised on the kallax underframe legs to raise it off the floor. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, storage is necessary so those low style media units aren't very useful.
I am an expat in Qatar and well into my 50s. I love your comments and appreciate your advice...trips to Ikea are now done with a lot more confidence and information at my fingertips! Plus your humour is great!
Liam, you can tape your ceiling light with beige creme painters tape. Definitaly eases the pain in your eyes :) I did this with outside lamp on the entrance of the renters building. Works well. Windows curtains might be an option and make it cozyier. There are over a dozen ways without destroying walls for hanging curtain systems. I would buy a rug in this room to create space. Yes, you read it well, create a defined space..
👋 63 year old woman in the Pacific Northwest watching… ALWAYS!💚💚💚 I adore your sense of humor!!! You say out loud what I’m thinking quite often!😂 Keep up the fabulous work!!
Honestly, I feel like the Pentagon should be involved in some lighting choices. Not just in the barracks, because I'm starting to think some landlord choices are a threat to national security.
If you can't hang art due to renting, plaster walls or whatever, use Command hooks. No damage and easy to remove. These spaces needed plants too, actual living plants to bring warmth and nature in.
This is such a fun series and such good info; I'm luckily not in the same situation as Liam, but I thought you especially nailed a good plan for him, Nick! Bravo!
Of course you have fans outside the coastal cities! Hubby and I enjoy watching from a small, Indiana city 😊. You give us great ideas for remodeling and decorating our 70s ranch.
Kallax is actually pretty nice if you work it a bit and are crafty. I have a craft room in my place that doubles as my work office- I hand painted fabric drawers for one kallax with art from my favorite artist (Hokusai, took pieces from the same series so they would fit together). Plus there are now drawer inserts and doors you can now add- I added drawers to a second and painted it, changed the knobs to something nicer. Whole room is accents of navy against tan, set up so that when I sit at my desk behind me is rather tidy and formal for Zoom calls... but while I work I get to see in front of me all my favorite artworks and piece I made for the space, which is nice.
I’m over 50 and just starting to have a design style and have the money and time to actually implement it. Way to go for anybody working on their spaces while they’re younger, and in the barracks! Great video 😊
Nicotine beige 😂 reminds me of my friend's neighbour. I thought they had grayish popcorn ceilings. Turns out it was grease plus smoke build up 🤢. I passed on the home made baking....
Great advice, Nick! I thought your points to Liam were really good for a guy in a barracks. Focusing on what he can do, not what he can't, was great. As far as the art goes, he could probably use Command Strips to hang art on the walls in addition to or instead of on the shelf and use the shelf for books, or something else that can't hang on the walls. Plants? Some life in that room (even faux life!) would be a good add.
I love how you always explain everything and spice it up with sarcastic examples, so that it makes sense to us laics. We really learn a lot from your videos - thank you! Greetings from Hungary!
For Martha I'd go with lighter furniture based on the limited lighting of the room to brighten the space... bring in warm tones with lighter colored furniture. Also, you can then go with a rectangle rug with an oval or rectangle table (around 75" long) or if you stick with a round get one the size of the rug and go with a giant square rug or if you go with oval get a rectangle rug. Because of the lighting pick a clean looking white like Behrs base color then whatever colorful artwork you add along with the lighter colored dining set will feel happy and fresh. Lighter colored furniture include white, white washes, and blonde to medium brown wood tones. Pick more oatmeal wood than orange/red wood. Charlotte move your couch off the wall and have it floating on the green rug. It'll define the space and give the room purpose rather than everything being stuck alongside walls.

There are covers you can get for those fluorescent ceiling lamps. Some of them just tone down the glare (turn the bright white into softer white) and some have pictures on them. Anything would be better than what is there now. On another note, I'm super impressed by that barracks; I had no idea they were so nice!
Thank you❤ I hate painting one wall. I don’t know what “feature” wall means. It makes me think you didn’t have enough paint or couldn’t make up your mind.
That's an Ekornes Stressless recliner there that Martha has that you are complaining about and it's the best chair in the world out there, I have a similar one in more or less the same color. Also that ottoman is the best ottoman in the world, for those that don't know there are two tabs and it goes from being fixed to being able to tilt back and forth. It may not look as good as an Eames but it blows it away in every aspect.
He might not be able to change out fans and such. But for overhead lights he may be able to use smart bulbs if he has WiFi in his room. As a veteran, I feel your pain there.

As a vet, that’s a huge barracks room! Back in my soldiering days that would be at least a double. I say make sure you have a rug. Most older barracks get so cold. (I was in WW2 barracks).
10:20 but, the shelves are split into 3 and the TV extends about half way on the outer segments, the TV is (1+0.5+0.5)/3 the width of the console… it is 2/3 wide, you’re saying it isn’t

I’m a 44 year-old female viewer from Belize 🇧🇿. Your channel is both entertaining and informative. Love it!
Can we talk about why the barracks room has that many doors?
Thank you❤ I hate painting one wall. I don’t know what “feature” wall means. It makes me think you didn’t have enough paint or couldn’t make up your mind.
That's an Ekornes Stressless recliner there that Martha has that you are complaining about and it's the best chair in the world out there, I have a similar one in more or less the same color. Also that ottoman is the best ottoman in the world, for those that don't know there are two tabs and it goes from being fixed to being able to tilt back and forth. It may not look as good as an Eames but it blows it away in every aspect.
Nick, you need a painting behind you too.
Lol that’s where the dining room used to be! 😂
@thisuniquechica 😂😂 and the view of the kitchen.
Say, Nick. Your furniture is looking a bit brown, beige, and grey....add a little more interest?
I was thinking the same thing. The grey filter in this video washes the space out as well
Leave Nick alone
I love these “roasting spaces” videos. ♥️
60+ Jamaican female living in Florida. Love the channel and especially this series. Will have to become a member to get some personal advice.
Big lights are only for finding your contacts or emergency surgery.
He might not be able to change out fans and such. But for overhead lights he may be able to use smart bulbs if he has WiFi in his room. As a veteran, I feel your pain there.
I misheard the details about channel membership, and thought you offered explicit videos for channel members at 0:47. 😂😂😂. I was like what is TH-cam doing now???
That was really great! I was so glad to see you review the soldier's barracks. Great tips!
Can I just add that pulling a could out from the wall can also make a huge difference in space planning
great inspo pics! loving your channel from new york!
14:46 it’s an intervention chair…
😂😊❤
Soon to be 69 year old here and I love these roasts. When the Christmas decor comes down I’ll get brave and give submitting my spaces a try. You’re never to old to learn.
Chuckled a little bit at the one space with a pink and green color palette considering a certain movie that recently premiered. I love it. Pink goes good with green 😁
Omg!!! I love these roasting videos. I have been waiting for one of these for a long time. I hope you do more of these in the future!!!! I still laugh at the term "nicotine beige" 🤣. Who hasn't seen one of these walls. Love Charlotte's arm chair!!! Yes. Commit to the pink!!!
Me, 41 years old, still using the expedit as a media console (because I haven't found a media console I love still)
Watching from Brisbane,Australia
Ahem, not 35 or in Los Angeles. 56, living in Eastern Washington.
Table needs to add a leaf change to light rug rectangle add runner on table to match a little styling pretty place

Would love to see how Nick deals with curtains over radiators, must send a photo. At least I don't have nipple lights, but my rugs aren't big enough to put two legs of the chairs on, nor can I afford anything larger. More international options, styles and budgets would be lovely, send photos people. From wet S. W WALES UK (54yr old female and 2 cats😂)
Love these awesome recommendations!
Nick: i dont like pink, as i sit here wearing a pink shirt
Me: 😂
…and don’t forget that if you have older, and/or discontinued, IKEA furniture you can purchase new covers from both Comfort Works and Benz. Their prices are waaaay less than a new piece of furniture and they have lot’s of options.
Charlotte also needs ART -- even if it's just big bold posters in Ikea frames.
@ 14:30 that's an "intervention" chair 🤣
