The only must that I would add as a glasses wearer, is that if you are setting up a guest room PLEASE include a small table or shelf on both sides of the bed even if you personally don't want such things. It makes it harder for me to sleep knowing that my glasses are lying on the floor beside the bed or on a flat surface somewhere else in the room.
Being a former optician, I completely agree! I cannot count how many pairs of eyeglasses I've fixed because of glasses being on the floor, or placed on the bed! Don't ask me why, but you could have the biggest bedroom or the biggest bed, but those few inches where your glasses are is where someone will step or sit on them!)
Yes, my guest room is very tight, but I put 2 little sconce/shelves on one side of the bed (and there's a nightstand on the other side). It doesn't take up any floor space and looks cute.
The one time the under bed storage backfired on me: When we got moved for work we were lucky enough to have movers pack us up. Awesome! When we got everything delivered to the new place, I was directing people and a guy approaches me all smug and asks me "where do you want this box?" It was labeled "Master Bedroom toys." I was bewildered, somewhat mortified, and had a bunch of movers giving me side eye. Later I opened it up and realized it was Christmas books and stockings that I'd stored under the bed. 😂
@@nailsofinterest The movers had labeled every single box with what was in the box and where it was located in our home. So they looked inside, saw kid stuff, and it was in the master bedroom...
@@cbpd89 Pff, you got off lightly. Back when I was relatively new as a cleaning lady I found a buttplug under a customer's bed. I was working alone so I didn't have a colleague at hand to ask, and the schedule was very tight so I was stressed, so I ended up just putting it on top of the bed like I usually would with stray socks and other under-the-bed debris. After that I had to switch customers with one of my colleagues so that they'd be cleaning the buttplug house instead ^^;
My 8 y/o son and I have lived in a 300sf tiny house for 5 1/2 years. It’s basically one room with a bathroom. So the kitchen, living room, and bedroom are one room. I’ve been forced to break every design rule. Especially as we’ve outgrown it for the last 3 years while I’ve searched for the perfect house. Well, I found the perfect house this week, and my offer was accepted last night. And magically your videos appeared in my TH-cam feed. Fifteen years ago I was really into home design. But now I’m out of touch with it. So I’m really enjoying your videos. In a couple months we’ll have actual bedrooms again. Yay!
I just got back from Japan. And took your advice in another video. To wit: Upgrade your living space by acquiring quality plates and dishes. So, I decided my big souvenir purchase would be an entire set of hand glazed dinnerware!
When I moved into where I'm at, I got it as-is from a relative who passed, and there were two large hutches full of fancy dishes! One from a Japanese company featuring silver edges and pink wild roses (my favourite flower), and the other is the well known Old Country Roses from Royal Albert (clearly the more expensive set, but there's also more of the pieces to it, including light switch plates and a few placemats I didn't even know came in the design). I managed to fit both sets, with some nice glasses, into one hutch to use the other for displaying my musical instruments. I don't use them when it's just me alone, but it feels good to have people over for holidays or birthdays and bring out fancy dishes, to have something other than the stained, chipped, old standard ones, and use the design of the dishes to enhance the decor. I have some floral themed artwork on the dining room walls, and it goes well together. I grew up with very minimalist dishes, but my grandparents would use real silver for an annual family dinner, and they had nice crystal serving dishes and such, so the idea of using your best when people come over is something I really appreciate.
You, Nick, are a breath of fresh air. No fluff, no phony laugh or excitement, just straight to the point with great info & humor added for the best videos ever. Appreciate you!!! ❤
Never feel ashamed for providing your cat adequate furniture. It's a good thing to give them something that belongs to them. They're part of the family, too.
I will never move my cat tree again. In its former spot, the kitties hardly used it but in the new spot, they love it and use it constantly. I don’t care what ANY “designer” thinks - I design my space for OUR use, not for what some weirdo thinks! I don’t like his lifestyle choices and he won’t like mine.
Personal preference and tip from my 80yo mum: for a really 'full', luxurious look on your bed, buy your duvet one size bigger than your bed. So if you have a double/queen-sized bed, buy a king-sized duvet. It'll fall really nicely, look fuller and if you have 2 mattresses (for example) it will hide them.
@Diann T I guess cause it's colder in the UK, you have the benefit of washing the duvet cover instead of the whole thing, and you wash the duvet less, which allows it to last longer. When you fancy a room refresh you can just buy a new duvet cover, as opposed to the whole thing which works out cheaper. You can buy both summer and winter duvets or 2-in-1 which I have, so it's multipurpose.
@@diannt9583,the big benefit of duvets is it takes two seconds to make the bed- shake it, throw it, done. I’ve had one since the 1980s and would never go back .
Amen! King size comforters or duvets on a queen size bed make all the difference! No more fighting over the covers AND it covers the extra thick mattress sides so much better!
In 1995 when I first came to Canada I worked as a house cleaner. We used to clean a house that the cleaning team felt very uncomfortable visiting. This was because the home owner had dozens of creepy, dusty old dolls everywhere. Plus all the drapes were always closed and lights were too low. We felt like the dolls were watching us. LOL! Couldn't wait to get done and get out of that place.
Shout outs to the teenage boys here, you are ahead in the "adulting" game, good for you guys! Also, we have 9 pillows on our king bed. Between our kid sleeping wi us, our small dog. I adult wi snoring issues, and 1 with reflux issues, we truly use EVERY SINGLE PILLOW. No lie. Love this channel! Also, a 3 step window solution: pull down light blocking pleated shades that click inside the frame. A semi sheer calming print for daytime light with privacy, on a tension rod, also within frame. Over that, wall mounted ceiling to floor dusty medium sea blue solid velvet drapes for warmth, texture, with light block lining. Our room is dreamy and cozy any time if day or night. We love it!
Hi Nick, I lost the count on how many times I have watched this video. At the beginning, I was learning from you, and then it became therapeutic. I laughed even on my worst day. You are gifted with humour (and taste, of course) my friend. Thank you!
Just a tip that might help someone. I bought one of those bedroom sets from Rooms to Go. I love it, but it is quite matchy-matchy. I removed the mirror from the dresser and hung a non-matching mirror from Target above the dresser. It looks so much better. I put the original mirror in the living room!
I was just trying to think of creative ways to use my large, heavy and gorgeous dresser mirror, and I do need more light influence in my living room… thanks!
I just finished my bedroom yesterday. With a very limited budget. Took me months to shop and diy the pieces I already had. I am very very happy to report that I did not make any of the mistakes of your list... but one : I need a desk in my bedroom. But it is very simple: a white table without anything on it but a pretty plant, a white non ugly desk chair, and a cork pegboard on the wall. That's it. Took me months, but watching you helped me think about how to choose woods, textures, colors, etc. So thank you very much for the inspirations.
The creepy doll thing should extend to anything that can look at you when you're trying to fall asleep. My grandmother used to have a photograph of a scowling ancestor that glared at you in such a way that you could even feel it with the lights off!
Armed with good information after watching Nick's video, Goldilocks set out to the furniture store to redo her bedroom. "This headboard is too big!" she cried at seeing the looming , sparkling sequin wall of a headboard before her. "This headboard is too small." she moaned softly, despairing that she should ever find... but wait! What is this? Goldilocks shrieked with delight, "This headboard is just right!"
I have the matching bedroom furniture (bed, 2 bedsides and 1 lowboy chest of drawers) and I don’t regret it. It’s not a box store cheap set, it’s a hardwood handmade set. It’s very beautiful furniture and it makes me smile every time I come into my room and use the space. We invested a lot of money into it and plan on keeping it for a long time.
I have a similar setup. Beautifully crafted bed w matching 2 bedsides, then later added a chest, chest of drawers and jewelry chest, of a slightly different style, but same wood and same color hardware.
I have one single room in my house, a small room, I live small and it is all matching. The 90's and 2000s aestethic, the bubble/ocean/fish/water/glass look. I loved the moment he said it was so 90's.
I also have a matching set, but not cheap at all…mahogany color,I have white and cream in the room…i was inspired by the Palazzo hotel room…i know..a hotel room, and worse, Las Vegas, but the Palazzo is a beautiful hotel, and i love the design.
As for aggressive colors, we have some lush, saturated green walls to help us mentally survive northern winters. The entrance to the house is lush green and one huge wall in front of our stationery bike is the same. It's more intense than what people normally use but we don't get tired of it because it's mostly in the area that we quickly pass through or on a bike that we mostly use in winter for indoors exercise. And our brains get REALLY tired of winter up here, we crave that green like crazy.
"Do you want to know why you're still single?" Ha ha. So funny! I moved the bedroom furniture from the larger master bedroom and put it in the second bedroom where it is much smaller, more quiet, darker, and isolated from the rest of the home. I just sleep in there. Now the master bedroom is the multi purpose room. I have exercise equipment, food storage, TV area, and a sewing corner. It gets a lot of sunshine and there is plenty of room in which to move around. I love it!
When I first looked at my house I wondered why the smaller bedroom was obviously built as the master with the walk-in closet (in 1939). It turns out that it's on the quieter, darker side of the street. People in the old days weren't as stupid as most folks believe.
this is exactly what im doing in my new home - tiny bedroom and large multipurpose room (desk, sewing, workout, guest futon) the only thing is the shower is in the ensuite of the multi hahah
Our bedroom in our 1910 home also in our smaller room. We still have enough clearance for two night stands and it feels just right. The bigger master is now my husbands office/music room. Also, the dog sleeps under the bed, so no storage for us ha! It feels safe knowing he is right next to me all night.
Same! It felt like such a waste to use the largest bedroom for just a bed, plus the smaller bedrooms are quieter and cooler. I bought a purple pull-out couch for the master so it can be a guest room as well as my work room!
Replaced the boob light in my room in student housing with a piece I made from an old TV I found by the dumpster (light diffusion layers) bound in a cylinder by wood and brass rings sourced from craft and plumbing supply stores. It was a huge aesthetic improvement on a very low budget.
My problem is finding a nice quilt for a queen size bed. They always come as full/queen and in my opinion, they are way too short on the sides of the bed. I like my comforter or quilt to actually cover my mattress AND box spring. Oh yes, I'm sooo glad you didn't say a tv was necessary. NO TV in the bedroom!
I second the idea of getting king size comforter for a queen sized mattress. I also get king size flat sheets for my queen sized mattress. When there are 2 adult humans in bed it helps to have extra fabric. No more rolling over and getting a cold draft up my back!
@@janetj471 Place them as You usually do and go around either with basting stitches or dissapearinf fabric marker/chalk to mark where You would like it to end. Place them on the floor, take a ruler to even the line and mark 2-3 cm - an inch, inch and half from there even with permanent marker and either take it to alteration or straight stitch along Your first line (the closer one, not the seam allowance, farther one) with dense stitch in fitting thread, remove the stuffing from that line, and either double fold the remaining fabric, press firmly so the final edge ends at the first stitching line and the edge ends at the place where it was supposed to but you can stitch the underside at the same line that first stitching made. Press edges firm - voila. Or just mark and take them to alterations 😁
OP, You could always add a trim - fitting or contrasting - around the quilt. Depending on the vibe it could be velvet, crochet lace, linen or satin ruffles. I still have a raw linen coverlet quilt that I added a strip of lighter linen and added cheap roll of cotton crochet lace on edges and to cover my messy seams 😅 Having something custom made or made by Yourself with thought and love is always a nice touch and You'll have something unique.
LOVE that you speak so clearly, straight forward, quickly ( I also speak quickly) about actual design…and not telling long drawn out off topic stories about things that don’t matter. Yes, I’m getting what I’m looking for - interior design knowledge from a professional. Subscribed.
I also love that he speaks quickly. I usually put TH-cam videos on 1.5 speed and have FF through their long ass intros, spon con, and longass outros. With Nick, I know I don't have to worry about that. Also he provides time stamps which is even more thoughtful. That's why he is my favourite interiors creator! 😊
The pillows and creepy dolls part was especially entertaining! I wholeheartedly agree! I also found it hilarious the way this was illustrated and described. 😂
On the under bed storage according to Feng Shui detail...I have studied and am certified in Intuitive Feng Shui and have this to say: It's the sort of things stored under the bed that matters. I recommend capitalizing on that space for out of season clothing or for linens. Books, photos and other things that have thoughts/emotions/memories that they are charged with, THOSE are the things to avoid putting under your bed. Also, just don't let dust and debris collect under your bed. Love your color theory lesson today and the many other pearls of wisdom you share with your signature dry humor. LOVE you!
True. But under the bed is such a good dark place out of the sun for those photo boxes full of actual photos and negatives from my daughter's childhood. Right along the corners of the bed with a few boxes of photos out of the sun and stays cool. My closet I need for my clothes.
@@dianeosgood6594 Totally agree. Grew up in a Chinese family, no one cares about Feng Shiu. We even laugh at tips those Mr. Feng Shiu recommended to people. This industry has centuries of notorious history of confusing illiterates and earning dirty money from them. In recent decades, the industry has transformed and modernised their theories to make their recommendations more sensible and acceptable to more educated people. But we all know that no matter how it transforms, it is a type of old cult and people once believed in it can be easily manipulated and Mr. Feng Shiu can make very easy money from them.
Thanks so much for this insight! I follow the rules of feng-Shui but I never agreed with the no "platform/storage" under your bed. What you said makes a lot of sense
@@Aragorn333 for the record, I don't like Mr. Feng Shue's advice. In design school, my best friend from Taiwan said Feng Shui is for old people 🤣 It's origins really have to do with the placement of the deceased. But yes, there are many schools and it is confusing...especially if you just pick a few books and start reading about it.
Omg I can’t remember the last time I actually laughed out loud watching a decor video! “ creepy dolls nope nope nope nope . You wanna know why your are still single? ma’am” I’m dead 😂 definitely needed that today!
It was so out of the blue and caught me by surprise, so I was LMAO! I agree, please no creepy dolls, and lose the sofa pillows in your bed. Spoken from a person with tons of bed pillows because it feels cozy.
That's it! I am throwing out the Queen size bed and getting a single so I have the required amount of room around the bed. My husband can sleep on the floor. Totally agree about colour influencing mood. If I see another grey plank floor, grey living room sets, and grey walls I will slip into a coma.
@@jeanpolkoski2107 You are so right. To put in a new floor when the grey one wouldn't be many years old be be cost prohibitive. If it were me I would buy some very large area carpets in colours I like.
That's my situation. I wasn't willing to go the single bed route in the master bedroom, so in lieu of a single with nightstands, I went with a queen platform bed & a floating shelf above it with lamps at each end of the shelf. People have dribbled on about the risk of that falling down while you're asleep, but that sucker is up there strong and stationary, and the remote control lamps throw a killer pattern on the wall above the headboard. No need for artwork. Friends love the look. All it took was rectangle lamp shades.
Confession: I actually love when friends and family make these little and I tweak a few things to help. Yes, blank rooms and unlimited budgets are the “dream”, but I low key love when someone is like “here is the bed in a bag my MIL bought us, can you make it work?” Yes, yes I can!
I love how all these videos basically just describe all our parent's houses. 😂😂 (Also, is it just me who finds all new stuff often ends up looking cheaper than mixing new with old thrifted finds even though it's way more expensive?)
my entire room is vintage thrift (pieces ranging from the 70s-90s) with some modern pieces and I love it. My colour theme is grey-brown, light grey, navy, and white. I restored all the wood myself so it feels like I really customized my space. Larger pieces are all similar wood tones. Shopping estate sales, yard sales, etc. can yield a lot of cool furniture for really cheap --- My desk and dresser were actually dumpster finds that I cleaned up. Thrifting doesn't have to hurt your wallet.
Bed size concern: I would rather fit comfortably into my bed which doesn't fit my room, than uncomfortably in by bed that fits the room. Depends on your purpose in life, feeling good or looking good. 🤔
Exactly, imagine having the luxury to have a full 18 inches either side of your bed 😂 our double bedroom barely has the length of a ruler either side and there’s 2 of us, so no chance of a single bed working unless we sleep on top of each other missionary style. We have a queen since my partner is tall, our old double was a bit too short and narrow for both of us to sleep comfortably
I also commented this before I saw your comment. I move around a lot in my sleep. I used to have a double bed, but when I move around I end up kicking and slapping my partner. I have a king size bed now, and we sleep a lot better!
Agreed, especially in small apartments. Comfort over looks always, that's good interior design. You can always have a lower bed, a Murphy type bed, pull-away bed/ couch-that-turns-into-bed to free some space, visually or functionally but good sleep is always the most important aspect of designing sleeping spaces so Im 100% with Y'all on this
Laughed so hard at this because I felt called out! I grew up with hoarders, lived in temporary spaces, then married a man who moved a lot so setting up a "home" in anything other than a use what we have way has only recently (I'm 55) become an option for me, and so many of the things I wanted when I was poor because I thought that's what people had were on your list. I dreamed of owning a matching bedroom suit, a Bed in a Bag, and dozens of pillows! TBF though, we do have the pillow situation, but that's because I was in a wreck in 2005 and need 5-7 pillows to get comfy at night :P
@@criticRNMay cuz Kits/trays & packs are how we roll. Nurses are great at gathering supplies, putting them together as we anticipate requirements…..simply makes sense💁🏻♀️
When my grandparents got married in the 50s, they bought a 17 piece set of furniture. They didn't use it their whole lives. A lot of the pieces ended up in storage over the years, but my husband and I ended up getting it (which was super important for my grandma). So yeah, all of the dressers in my room and my kids rooms match the dining room table and our china cabinet. But I am definitely not getting rid of blonde mahogany solid wood furniture.
I have a lot of really dark wood pieces also due to family, but I split up one set across three rooms and it looks nice to have the same colours in most of the house (at least most of the upstairs all has similar colours), but it's not overwhelming that everything in one room has exactly the same drawer handles, and odd shaped mirrors, etc.
My late sister had all matching furniture in her house. It worked for her because she had MANY collections displayed throughout her home. The furniture served as a canvas of sorts and brought cohesiveness to the space while letting the collections shine.
I have the right-sized headboard, more than 2 feet of space on either side of my queen bed, a storage bench at the end of the bed, nothing matchy-matchy, and no creepy dolls, so I feel very proud of myself.😁 Now I just have to work on getting more texture! Thanks, Nick!
😊Great tips Nick! Although gotta say have you ever been to the UK? New build houses are tiny!!! My "ensuite" main bedroom measures 14 ft by 7ft 6 ins with a window oddly placed to one side of the shortest wall with the "ensuite" being at the other short side of the room, this makes it a nightmare to furnish! I've managed to shoe horn in a small double bed with storage (lift up so max storage!) and normal headboard, fitted wardrobe (no closet) and 2 tiny bedside cabinets I managed to find locally, and some soft curtains it's what I call eclectic by necessity!! Totally agree about over sized headboards, tons of pillows ( just why???) and cooler tones look so much calmer I agree 😊and table touch lamps are a must for me.
My bedroom is 1930s inspired. I have marching furniture, I have Royal Velvet matching tapestry inspired dusty sage and gold bed in a bag with matching drapes and throw pillows. I also have matching full size table lamps! But for the aesthetic, it works. If you're modern or contemporary I can see how it wouldn't. But I'm Carole Lombard reincarnated so it works!
In contrast, I'm decorating my 1939 house in the Art Nouveau style -- the original fancy spindles on the staircase, slate fireplace surround, and stained wood trim in the living room told me to! So many people think that a time in history only has one definitive style, and it's not true! Folks have always built their houses to please their own tastes.
I think the trick, here as in anything with design, is to be intentional. So, if you do it to create a special aesthetic, than of course you can always break any design rules ;)
I love this guy! He gets away with whatever controversial things he wants to say because everything else he says has knowledge and logic behind it. Pretty entertaining but you also learn alot.
I found this video very helpful. I live in a studio apartment and have a king sized bed. All of the tips here make me rethink my bed size, comforter, and other furniture pieces in my apartment as well. I enjoy the sensibility in these tips.
I know a Queen bed is more aesthetic but my husband is 6'5"....the priority is for him to be comfy, not aesthetic lol. So we have a Cali-King which is not ideal but at least he can comfortably fit in bed!
My dad is 6'3 and my parents have a California King bed. Their bedroom set drives me crazy tho. Way too damn bulky. It's by Kathy Ireland if anyone wants a memory blast from the past.
You know what’s nice about no under-bed storage? No dust bunnies! It’s so much easier to clean if there are no obstacles. I just - get rid of stuff instead of storing it. I’m not saying this is for everyone, but it helps me simplify and keep tidy-a very good alternative to trying to keep everything!
I agree, also- if you have two floors and you get a full view under your bed every time you go upstairs (when the bed isn´t made), then its visually more relaxing to see just floor (preferably clean!)
Also half the reason beds are elevated is to allow airflow underneath. It's better for not only the life of your bed but more importantly temperature regulation. Stuffing that space with storage will make your bed warmer at night. Which if you're in NYC in the dead of winter I'm sure is wonderful but not so much fun here in Florida.
Another option is getting a bed with built-in under bed storage (sort of like a bed frame with a dresser under your bed). Still get the storage but no dust bunnies and no things disappearing into the abyss lol 😂
THANK YOU for saying color PSYCHOLOGY!!! So many people say “color theory” when they mean psychology!!! Color theory is the understanding that color is relative and that the context/setting/surrounding colors directly affects how we perceive colors. Think about optical illusions where there’s 2 seemingly differently colored dots inside differently colored squares but turns out the dots are the same color. This is color theory; literally just how the wavelength of light can be perceived differently
I use two telephone stands as bedside tables. Perfect height, 13.3” square with a drawer and a shelf. They are super practical in my tiny space and they look good.
I used to have a large one with two drawers as a kid, and I loved it! I had one drawer of toys, and the other of CDs and cassettes, because it was the perfect width to put the boombox my dad gave me on top and have the cord hidden down the back. I always had white furniture as a kid which doesn't match anything in my house currently, but I still have the boombox and wouldn't mind a similar stand if I can find one. But I suppose the one I had was more like a small dresser, I now have one more like what you're describing. I have a desk fan on it right now because my room is quite warm, and there's just enough room for my lotion and glasses to fit on it next to the fan.
Nick, i love you man. Your appologetic / not so apologetic side thoughts are the glue that hold our attention. Its fun to see how you can kindly rip the design faux pas, make it okay by saying “honey you do you”, and then offer some smart critical thinking and good design advice. I get the feeling you could probably do a whole other channel on personal growth counselling and approach it the same way. Great channel and im the furthest thing from a design type person (I have given my home zero design thought and zero budget).
I’m planning for a big move into an apartment in the next month and it’s really nice to plan all of it with someone’s advice. It really puts into perspective some of the bad things I’ve done and the good things I’ve done in my current room.
I stay in a lot of guest rooms and very rarely do they feel thoughtful for the comfort and needs of the guest. It's crucial to have a side table/ platform, working electrical outlet that is not solely behind the center of the headboard and a place to set an overnight bag. 6+ pillows is always a little baffling, but not as bad as a desk with a computer facing the bed, bicycles, old kid toys, or other stuff that one would put in a garage.
Also important - a light or lamp one can switch on or off without leaving the bed. I read myself to sleep at night, and when I am falling asleep, I need to reach to the switch without getting up and out to do so. (If I don't have this, I wake up fully and have to start the process all over again.)
GUEST - means FREE overnight accommodation - while I really like “guests” and strive to give privacy, I am not interested in spending money on unneeded furnishings while on a fixed income - the room is otherwise used as storage.
I do have six pillows in the guest room, but there is a nice sized chair any not used can be stacked. But there are tables on each side of the bed with power strips, and lamps on each side. I also put snacks, bottled water, a fan or heater depending on season, a nail clipper and nail file, and chapstick. I really tried to think of things I occasionally need when traveling, but don’t want to ask for.
I don't do the under bed storage in our room but I do utilize it in my children's rooms. It's the perfect place to put the long skinny plastic tubs to hold all the artwork, drawing supplies, lego's, etc. And their comforter's reach the floor so they aren't noticeable at all. It really saves space for them.
I MIGHT be moving from a small studio apartment to a three bedroom plus den apartment and I’ve never been happier to be following this channel! I’m a gothic themed maximalist, but you always give such amazing advice in terms of materials, space considerations, how to make trends classy that it’s a Huge inspiration. (Example, I want to do mixed metals but didn’t know how. Now I know it’s glossy and matte black to be cohesive! Also my colour pops are sticking to purples and bluey greens in different tones and shades and textures. Maximalist but cohesive!)
Aaaaah okay, ignoring the beautiful super tall gothic headboard I was looking at. I was thinking it might be too tall but now confirmed. 😂 Hmmmm, how to make statement due to visibility of master bedroom from living space and cats = no closed doors
I must state that I abhor matchy-matchy anything when it comes to furniture. Agree about the pillow parade. Too much and too much time wasted dealing with them. I love your proper use of the word "curated."
I love your personality! I was an interior designer for 20+ years. “What” you say is not new to me, I agree with what you say. “How” you say it is super fun!! Speak your truth!! You make me giggle. I also agree wholeheartedly with you. … thanks!!!
I remember the height of bedroom interior fashion in 1997 in Australia, was the entire bedroom suite: bed frame, wardrobe, bedside drawers, dresser with oversized attached mirror. All quality wood. In 1997 that was my bedroom and l was chuffed!! Fast forward to 2023, l only have the bedside drawers. With each house move a bedroom piece was sustainably let go. I can review my life from 27 to 53 just by my bedroom furniture 😄
There used to be a mail order catalog called Domestications. I ordered this bed in a bag set that was red and purple flowers on a black background. Chiiiile, you couldn't tell me NUTHIN!! Others who had it were equally unapproachable. LOL
Big fan of the Opalhouse by Jungalow at Target bedding. Funky prints and textured and enough variety to mix and match without the dreaded bed in a bag look. Decent quality, too.
I have her Hamsa quilt, and I use it on the couch to protect it from the fur babies. Love it, it has visual interest but it’s neutral. I agree- her stuff is good.
Wonderfully concise and speedily delivered! I'm normally too impatient to listen to YT vids, but you had me glued to the spot from the start. Packed with good sense advice. Thank you. Now going to the one about living rooms!😘
A full-size bed in a small to medium apartment is just right. It’s 6” narrower than a Queen and sometimes uses the same size coverlet as a Queen. The sheets are cheaper than larger sized beds and it’s easier to make up each morning. The rug underneath can be a bit smaller too.
I have a full-size bed in my guest room. I thrifted a duvet that's twin sized and laid it horizontally across the bed. It really looks nice. I don't have to tuck it behind the footboard either. Although disclaimer, the bed is a four poster that is abour 2 feet off the ground, so the duvet hangs down without touching the floor.
I wish I could afford a much smaller bed than my king. Alas, I am on disability. I live in a two bedroom cottage with a footprint about the size of a two car garage's. What I had to do was, since I live alone, shove my monster bed against the far corner of the ten by ten foot bedroom. I think it makes the room look a tad bigger. I also have a pleated camel dust ruffle covering the bed's ugly metal frame. Since the dust ruffle matches the wood floor it makes the room look larger still. I have just enough space left for a good sized nightstand, a long MCM dresser & mirror and my closet door. The bed is covered with an inexpensive white Ikea duvet and pillow covers. My only sin is I painted the room a leafy green but I like the healing color.
I have my rule of rug sizes which is you need a rug as big as the one that’s twice as expensive as you hoped to pay, and the bed rule is the bed should be one size smaller than you think you “must have.”
@@icee8959 it's mind boggling how expensive a decent bed, mattress, bedding can be. I would love to downsize from queen to full, but I can't begin to afford it on disability.
I’ve been a nurse for over 40 years almost 100 percent of hospital rooms are blue or green. I refuse to wake up and see a hospital color in my bedroom. I agree with you on everything else. I love your advise.
Do you know that a number of prisons are gradually changing the walls of the cell-dwellers to a light but strong pink? They say it's been having a calming effect on the prisoners.
Regarding "aggresive colors", some bedrooms aren't necessarily used only for sleeping (for younger people their bedroom often doubles as a study room, play room or both) and some locations have these things called built-in blinds. When you're going to go to sleep in absolute darkness, the colors of the room don't matter so much: it's all black. As I live in one of those locations, I color the bedroom according to its daytime use.
Just found your channel... and love the practical design that i love and the fun, fast, humorous ways that you explain it. I love how you promote a concept, not just your own trend. I've binge watched- every single thing is something i have felt deeply about my own design. I'll be watching more!
Also, has this guy never experienced the joy of sprawling out like a starfish in your bed?? Fuck design or access rules, big beds are worth doing things "wrong" any day
Loved 'I would put the Xmas tree under the bed!' So true! For those of us in apartments, we completely understand the vacuum sealing bags etc. under the beds-shelving in the closets, etc. I must say-purging is such a wonderful way of getting rid of things you don't need. I love my little space!
Wow... when I heard that, I had this image of finding all those pine and spruce needles under the bed within a few months after Christmas! But then I decided he probably meant an artificial tree (which I have never had...)
It's disconcerting to admit that the things I "purge" (small apartment for 1) get stacked under the kitchen table until I have time to take them to the thrift store. I can't take them out to the car because there's stuff that LIVES in the car!
I have always enjoyed listening to Nick and his outlooks on design. I found this video especially helpful for me. I am currently trying to plan a remodel of my master bedroom and his ideas are so insightful. You are a wizard and a lifted TH-cam friend. I am so glad I watched this before starting. Please, keep up the outstanding submissions!!! -Jack-
The creepy dolls bit cracked me up so hard. This is the best TH-cam video I’ve seen in quite a while, both for the practical insights and also (especially) for Nick’s hilarious comments.
I am currently thinking about how to arrange my bedroom after a break up. Somehow it doesn't fit anymore that the bed is in the middle, because only one side needs access. So I think I'm going to spend the next few weeks doing a lot of rearranging to make it feel right for me - with all of Nick's tips that I can implement 😀 So thank you very much for your very much appreciated inputs.
I see nothing wrong with corner anchoring your bed. Just leave enough room to tuck the blankets down! Just a little tip: when you change your sheets, start with that back corner first!
As long as you don't bring in any creepy dolls you are good 😂😂😂😂. In all seriousness though, I've been there. If you can repaint the room, something that will be grounding and nurturing. Buy yourself some new bed linen, a new rug etc. It feels very luxurious having a centred bed all to yourself. I pushed my bed against a wall when I left my first marriage and it felt lonelier, like I was 15 again. I truly hope your bedroom becomes the sanctuary you can enjoy and feel safe and nurtured in. Upside you now don't have to somehow incorporate their design taste now. 😂
I am a single lady that moved my bed into a corner with no headboard. It fits my lifestyle because I like to spend time reading and watching TV in bed. The real reason I moved my bed into the corner is because my dog has seizures and I have tile floors. She sleeps next to the wall and I don't have to worry that she is going to fall out during a seizure and get hurt. She has to sleep with me for the same reason, so I can care for her if she seizes in the middle of the night. I love the way my room looks, even with the bed in the corner. I spend a lot of time here because I enjoy it so much.
Another GREAT video!! My grandparents antique shop had one room of nothing but antique dolls. Creeped me out as a child, and the aversion remains! 👀 Nightstands...I've seen open "secretary" can look really nice. Just have no clutter as it will interfere with sleep.
100% with you on the underbed storage. Real estate is extensive and bedrooms can be small now! Best thing I ever did was buy a bed with draws underneath! I was able to get rid of my dresser and it made my room so much more spacious where before it was so cramped
Under bed storage! Thank you for pointing that out. I just moved to a new home that doesn’t have a linen closet. I have been trying to figure out where I am going to store my extra sheets and seasonal table linen-don’t need the Christmas tablecloth and napkins handy all year-under bed storage is the perfect solution!
I love the confidence that you have in us all to make good decisions and pick out bedding that will be cohesive without being matchy matchy. Thanks for the encouragement! And for the "permission" to store stuff under the bed... Thank you for being relatable!
The bed is too big for the small room, lived it and I actually swapped my bedroom with larger dining/library and loved it ever since. When your bed dominates the room it’s also claustrophobic and you can’t design anything, you can’t put anything literally, so spot on Nick.
I had a regular sofa in a small living. It never looked or felt right. Replaced it with two matching loveseats and it was perfect. Diverse furniture elsewhere gave the room unique style.
I HATE to have things under my bed. I don't really do the feng shui thing because I never really looked into it. But I just know I feel more relaxed in my bedroom if there is nothing under my bed. I do have in mind that I'm a single very not materialistic person though and totally get why it can be a great thing to optimize the space if you do need places to fit your things.
Nick you have such a good sense of humour! I love watching your videos! Thank you very much for taking the time to make them for us.❤ Cindy from Ottawa
I don't know how youtube knew to recommend this to me today but it did. Thank you so much for your great tips! You said some things that reaffirmed thoughts I was having about potential changes in my room and you've encouraged me to invest in improving my living space. Thank you!
I am currently working on 2 bedrooms and I'm trying hard to think outside the box. Thank you Nick. I respect YOU and your sense of style. Not Only are your ideas amazing, classic and simplistic you don't force them on anyone. You are Cute, Cute and Cute☺️
Nick I am renovating my 1940’s house and my bedroom is almost done ✔️ My fav. space so far I did neutrals of warm beige, cream sheets and a comforter with a slight imprints of an Indian floral in a light greige tone, I spent time looking for these items as well as the artwork, I have white crown moldings and a good size closet with white wood built ins. I had the fancy curtain rods for both the closet and big window to the ceiling. I have a hardwood floor in a lighter walnut that warms up the space, however the clincher is there is still a boob light on the ceiling haha 😂 but I have a hanging fixture picked out, I’m just waiting for the price to drop on wayfair and I need a runner rug for beside the bed, the furniture pieces are antique I’ve added some glam accents 🥰
Thank you for talking about rooms with lower ceilings! We have a new apartment with those and all the inspirational pictures online have beautiful high ceilings and I really don‘t know what to look out for when looking for furniture and lamps and decor for our new home!
Apartment sized furniture gives the illusion of height because the sofas tend to have lowet backs. Always hang your curtains as close as possible near the ceiling, art with vertical, not horizontal events as well
Yes, even in older homes many do not have the high ceilings and open concept type spaces. My ceilings are very low but standard by the way of the 60’s when my home was built. It’s definitely different when watching all these interior design channels that only show large luxurious spaces.
So glad I ran across your channel. Getting ready to decorate my guest room and I've gotten 3 good ideas already especially not having the matching bedroom furniture and storage un the bed
If your bedroom is too small for a nightstand, try a bookcase headboard. You can put a lamp on it, and you can put books or knick-knacks in there. It's a lot of storage for little cost. For the *ahem* stuff you don't want to look at, you can hide it in a nice covered basket.
I understand the advice about under the bed storage (I have also lived in really small apartments where that was the only place to store certain things) but there is also the issue of airflow for your mattrass which is really important because every human person sweats at night and guess where most of that ends up? In your mattrass! So in order for that moisture to be cycled out you need airflow under the bed.
The biggest mistake I have made with furniture (twice) was finding the most beautiful pieces in my travel and not buying and shipping it home. I currently have a bedroom where all the furniture matches as a set. I found beautiful nightstands in China and hesitated to buy and ship. Big mistake as I will never find these here and will probably not be returning to China😔
Oh, my goodness, Nick… thank you so much for being YOU and for your presence on You Tube… I laughed so hard several times during this video and it has totally changed the trajectory of my day, as well as informing me of some killer do’s and dont’s as I order new furniture for the master bedroom… you’ve confirmed what I suspected design-wise and now I feel confident to move forward.. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
The last point ugh relatable. My multipurpose office/bedroom is killing me right now. I really have all the vibes tangled up with each other and it’s this chaotic blend of anxious yet totally static because I never physically move when I’m in that room now lol
We built a big addition to a cottage, and I had an upstairs bedroom with huge windows and a sky light. I painted it yellow with white woodwork and it was the best decision ever. I loved waking up in that sunny room. I know green and blue are more "restful" colors, but yellow is a great way to start the day. I had an orange and yellow quilt for the bed---Nick would have had a coronary if he saw it! heh
I watched your bedroom video last week and have taken it on board and have shifted furniture around and cleared out extra furniture and , Whow, you have sorted it for us. Thank you.
Great advice. Have you addressed the issue of lamps that are too small for the location, such as nightstand or end table? I'm not a fan of ceiling lights, but I often see bedroom lamps really too small for nightstands, and I personally am struggling with the size for dressers. I'd appreciate advice on this area. Thank you.
I have a lamp hanging from the ceiling, but it's the kind that plugs in, and hangs from a chain held up by a couple hooks. I have it hanging over my nightstand so I have room for items on it, but it still doesn't feel like it's too far away. It's also easy to remove, change the lightbulb, or change the lampshade. Mine is a more vintage style, but I like how it's out of the way, but not permanent. I also have the Z-wave system so I plugged it into a dimmer module, so I can use my phone to adjust the brightness, and I have it set to be an alarm in the morning as well. Then again, my rooms are fairly small, so I have to make the most of my space, and don't want to have a large lamp taking up precious space.
Great video, Nick! One comment on those super-high headboards: I have very high ceilings in my bedroom, so I could accommodate a very high headboard; *however*, what I've noticed is that this tends to dwarf my triple dresser. It's a beautiful Biedermeier dresser with a trifold mirror, but it suddenly looks miniature in a room with high ceilings and one of those monster headboards.
I don't like things under my bed, but I'm lucky with my storage space. However, I definitely giggled when you said you'd store a Christmas tree under yours 😂
Sir I would just like to say that I'm a teenage boy who loves this channel! I might be the only one though

And your cell phone!
This is a necessity for a glasses wearer!
Super rude and inconsiderate not even having a tiny table or surface to put your things next to the bed.
😂lovely
But why did it say "toys"?
@@nailsofinterest The movers had labeled every single box with what was in the box and where it was located in our home. So they looked inside, saw kid stuff, and it was in the master bedroom...
@@cbpd89ahahaha.
@@cbpd89 Pff, you got off lightly. Back when I was relatively new as a cleaning lady I found a buttplug under a customer's bed. I was working alone so I didn't have a colleague at hand to ask, and the schedule was very tight so I was stressed, so I ended up just putting it on top of the bed like I usually would with stray socks and other under-the-bed debris. After that I had to switch customers with one of my colleagues so that they'd be cleaning the buttplug house instead ^^;
Yay!
Congratulations!!!
"But I will make fun of it & I love that for me" best thing I have heard all week!
The gauntlet has been thrown down, the red line has been drawn: No creepy dolls. Agreed. 100%.
I just got back from Japan. And took your advice in another video. To wit: Upgrade your living space by acquiring quality plates and dishes. So, I decided my big souvenir purchase would be an entire set of hand glazed dinnerware!
Yes yes yes! A great everyday luxury.
What a wonderful souvenir!
That sounds so beautiful!!!!
Very important to me- german and french dishes, pots and silverware and drink ware . Period no discussion
“But I will make fun of you because I love that for me”…dead 😂 🤣

Never feel ashamed for providing your cat adequate furniture. It's a good thing to give them something that belongs to them. They're part of the family, too.
I will never move my cat tree again. In its former spot, the kitties hardly used it but in the new spot, they love it and use it constantly.
I still haven't figured out the benefits of duvets. I prefer sheets and either a blanket or a quilt.
Duvets are awesome:)
😳
I'm so sorry...
It could be because the dolls WERE watching you.
@@obiwanquixote8423 There definitely was a weird energy in that house. The whole cleaning team felt it.
That sounds dreadful! I have to have LOTS of light and NO to those creepy dolls!
We love it!
We have the same issue plus we use two king pillows in shams as a kind of headboard
It sounds very nice! I'm just starting to shop for furniture for my bedroom, so wish me luck!

You brought tears to my eyes😂 during the creepy doll bit and more. You are a gem and I love hearing your ideas.
The creepy doll thing should extend to anything that can look at you when you're trying to fall asleep. My grandmother used to have a photograph of a scowling ancestor that glared at you in such a way that you could even feel it with the lights off!
And there should be no teddy bears in an adult room.

This is a very well-written story! 😂

I did the same in my previous home! Set it up as my art studio, sewing center, weight room, and yoga space.
That sounds so cool - all my rooms have boob lights 😮Have to change those ! Lol 😂
Maybe a king-size quilt/comforter would work? Measure your bed to see what you need, then check dimensions
I have the opposite problem. We have double beds at our cottage and the Queen/ double size comforters puddle on the floor and are tripping hazards.
LOVE you!
The advice I was looking for. Thank you.
True. But under the bed is such a good dark place out of the sun for those photo boxes full of actual photos and negatives from my daughter's childhood. Right along the corners of the bed with a few boxes of photos out of the sun and stays cool. My closet I need for my clothes.

Ugh, I'm so OVER grey. Painting my living room white this week. I feel for ppl who put in grey floors, that's gonna be expensive...
Yes, grey is so boring. I live in Sweden, if I go to hemnet, Sweden's real estate porn site, everything I can afford is shades of grey.
LOL -- yes, sometimes you don't have a choice when you're a married couple. Comfort needs to receive priority over the visuals.
Confession: I actually love when friends and family make these little and I tweak a few things to help. Yes, blank rooms and unlimited budgets are the “dream”, but I low key love when someone is like “here is the bed in a bag my MIL bought us, can you make it work?” Yes, yes I can!
It adds real character
I love how all these videos basically just describe all our parent's houses. 😂😂 (Also, is it just me who finds all new stuff often ends up looking cheaper than mixing new with old thrifted finds even though it's way more expensive?)
Yes! Plastic fantastic 😂
It's not just you.
Definitely not just you
my entire room is vintage thrift (pieces ranging from the 70s-90s) with some modern pieces and I love it.
Totally agree, my son is very tall and he does need a big bed
Exactly, imagine having the luxury to have a full 18 inches either side of your bed 😂 our double bedroom barely has the length of a ruler either side and there’s 2 of us, so no chance of a single bed working unless we sleep on top of each other missionary style. We have a queen since my partner is tall, our old double was a bit too short and narrow for both of us to sleep comfortably
I also commented this before I saw your comment. I move around a lot in my sleep. I used to have a double bed, but when I move around I end up kicking and slapping my partner. I have a king size bed now, and we sleep a lot better!
Mwahaha! Short W's!
Bed in a Bag was huge for my family lmao 😂
Not all in the same room, it's fine. It's like same thread throughout the house. Not what he's talking about
I have a lot of really dark wood pieces also due to family, but I split up one set across three rooms and it looks nice to have the same colours in most of the house (at least most of the upstairs all has similar colours), but it's not overwhelming that everything in one room has exactly the same drawer handles, and odd shaped mirrors, etc.
My late sister had all matching furniture in her house. It worked for her because she had MANY collections displayed throughout her home. The furniture served as a canvas of sorts and brought cohesiveness to the space while letting the collections shine.
♥️
He clearly said matching sets give a dated look & u proved that. Congratulations😂
I love how you can see on the clock behind Nick that he recorded the whole video in roughly 30 minutes 😅 True pro!
I love Art Nouveau and am envious that you can do this!
you've got a great attitude and confidence and didn't get all bitter and twisted wd Nic
I think the trick, here as in anything with design, is to be intentional. So, if you do it to create a special aesthetic, than of course you can always break any design rules ;)
@@ginacirelli1581 Sounds lovely, would love to see it!!

Finding sheets for a California Queen or King is a total PITA
❤If my husband was 6”5 I’d sleep wherever he wanted me to😉 😂😂
I found Calif king bed sheets at Costco!
My dad is 6'3 and my parents have a California King bed. Their bedroom set drives me crazy tho. Way too damn bulky. It's by Kathy Ireland if anyone wants a memory blast from the past.
Wait, aren’t California Kings shorter than a regular King?
You know what’s nice about no under-bed storage? No dust bunnies! It’s so much easier to clean if there are no obstacles. I just - get rid of stuff instead of storing it. I’m not saying this is for everyone, but it helps me simplify and keep tidy-a very good alternative to trying to keep everything!
I agree, also- if you have two floors and you get a full view under your bed every time you go upstairs (when the bed isn´t made), then its visually more relaxing to see just floor (preferably clean!)
None of my beds have bed skirts anymore so I don’t want to see containers either.
I agree I have a dog that is constantly manifesting those puffers!!
Another option is getting a bed with built-in under bed storage (sort of like a bed frame with a dresser under your bed). Still get the storage but no dust bunnies and no things disappearing into the abyss lol 😂
I always appreciate Nick’s advice but…my bedroom is warm white, turquoise and fuschia and I love it, I’ll never go desaturated!
Turquoise and fuschia are 2of my favourite colours. It must give summer vibs all year round ❤️
I also like subtle colors...making them "neutral". Love the term "desaturated"! And I always enjoy your humor!! 😘
Each creepy doll needs its own pillow 😂
Could they be matchy-matchy? 😂

I use two telephone stands as bedside tables. Perfect height, 13.3” square with a drawer and a shelf. They are super practical in my tiny space and they look good.
I like that you found a solution that included a drawer. Some bedside essentials need to be out of sight.

To Zenora: check in to a nice hotel if you're that fussy. When I visit
I am there to visit people, not evaluate the accommodations

Same here. 😂
Agreed. Its cute stuff. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.
Target also has good 100% cotton sheets! They are soft and feel more expensive than they actually are.❤

I’m literally moving things out of my bedroom while watching your video. Feels and looks better already
When you're tall, you want your whole body on the bed. I even bought XL Twins for my teen boys.

Really? Maybe it's just VA hospitals that are all-white. Well, OK, maybe they were white 20 years ago.
I always imagine hospital rooms to be white or off white. I guess I never paid attention. The sheets are always white.

@@slbarbieri1725 My bed is corner anchored and the angle makes it more of a focal point even though the room is small, it just works.

Your tips are invaluable and your sense of humor is much appreciated!
If your bedroom is too small for a nightstand, try a bookcase headboard. You can put a lamp on it, and you can put books or knick-knacks in there. It's a lot of storage for little cost. For the *ahem* stuff you don't want to look at, you can hide it in a nice covered basket.
This is what I have! Very convenient for me!
Agreed. I couldn’t live without mine. My meds
and vitamins and the books I’m reading.
@@rosezingleman5007 please dont display your meds and vitamins
However, if you live in a region with loads of earthquakes, please do not use shelves over your head. Those knick-knacks will fall on you.
Better still, just put a small shelf (enough for your eyeglasses, a cell phone and a book) and a wall-mounted lamp over it.
Yikes! Get a waterproof mattress pad.
As long as the containers aren't smashed up against the mattress there will be air flow.
Don't you just hate when you let something slip through your hands.

I had an orange and yellow quilt for the bed---Nick would have had a coronary if he saw it! heh
As a teenager, my west-facing bedroom was painted a nice cheery yellow and it really was pleasant to wake up to!
I have a lot of deep reds in my bedroom: I live in a cold climate and it's cozy!
I watched your bedroom video last week and have taken it on board and have shifted furniture around and cleared out extra furniture and , Whow, you have sorted it for us. Thank you.
Dear Nick, you are a LOVE! Really enjoyed your lively and amusing comments in this bedroom video! I'll look for your other videos.
One of your best yet! Loved the part about the creepy dolls. That was a huge BONUS.
Room dividers are pretty dang helpful & mine has traveled from room to room, hung on the hall wall if i dont need it right then.
I don't like things under my bed, but I'm lucky with my storage space. However, I definitely giggled when you said you'd store a Christmas tree under yours 😂
