Nick, your perspective on open shelving has changed my life. Open shelving is not storage! I've put so many things behind (lovely) closed doors now and it brings me so much peace. Also, marry me, k?
I enjoy asking about unique personal items when I’m invited over. I’m a huge introvert and it really helps me find conversation and I learn the most interesting things about people. Books used to be where I began, but people shy away from books now. But usually there is something. However, I have been in homes that lack personal items and it is has shocked me. I can’t start a conversation about the picture you picked up at Home Goods.
Hi Nick, esthetically I agree with your comment on cropped curtains. However, ever so often the radiators of the heatingsystem are placed underneath the windows to ease convection. And in that case drawn floor length curtains hinder the flow of the warmed air.
Blinds are your answer. I know that we would all love to have beautiful windows with curtains floor to ceiling and most interior designer youtube is telling you that you need them, but sometimes it's better to let the dream go and choose something more practical and better fitted to what you have to work with. I recommend the last video Paige Wassel made recently when she gave advice to her subscriber about a weirdly curtained nook :)
I have puppet show curtains, but mounted inside the window casing and just skimming the sill. So they function essentially like blinds, but are easy to just slide back out of the way. I frame them with full-length curtains during the colder months.
10:05 first thing I did when we put an offer in for our new house was I made graph paper mock ups of the rooms and I have them stored in my home projects file in the filing cabinet. Really worth it.
Good suggestions, Nick. Totally agree with them all. Unfortunately I have "some" furniture that maybe uncomfortable to guests. I have chronic upper, lower back, hip and neck pain. I need very firm, slightly upright seating to accomodate my condition. I do like using my living room so...... My friends/family are very understanding. 😊
Ok, not the video to watch when you are eating lunch😂. Nick talking faster to meet a time limit only made me eat my lunch the fastest I think i I ever have. Seriously though such great tips!! Have a great rest of the week Nick.
I’ve just bought cushions for my sofa; my colour scheme is blues and greens and antique silver. They came with piping in bright red and look fabulous (opposite side of the colour wheel). I wasn’t expecting that colour piping but I think it looks terrific.

It's so cute that you think we're all out here having all sorts of people of varying ages, heights, and mobility needs just traipsing through our homes looking for conversation and a place to put their drinks. Can't relate 😂
LOL. Me too. I live alone, over 60, in a 4 plex. My brother is across the hall and my dad lived right below ,me. I go down to get dad's lunch, dinner, make coffee etc. He is on oxygen so he ain't coming up the stairs! Brother is also busy. No one has 'visited' me in over a year!
Hey Nick, no reason to complain about how fast you speak. There is a possibility to slow down while watching the video. I am proud to understand your videos in „real speed“ meanwhile 😂. Greetings from Bavaria
I have to say this....I HAVE NEVER ENJOYED A VIDEO MORE! Not only are you a master at decor and give EXCELLENT advice, ...BUT YOU ARE SOOO FUNNY! I hear all those little quips and comments and you seriously make me laugh my head off. I laughed the whole video at your comments! This is my first time hearing you on this platform, and you are hysterically funny to me! Keep up the fantastic videos. BTW, I subscribed in the first minute!, lol
I immediately thought Mr Roger’s with that asshole King Friday and Lady Elaine Fairchild. Yes. I said it. I’ve dated myself. Damn that Lady Elaine Fairchild was such a b*tch. I think she would love your critiques. (Queen Sara Saturday would sneak her favorites somewhere in the room)
My media console is exactly the same width as my TV. Not ideal, but it's solid walnut, I love it, and it's not going anywhere. Speakers on either side of it (don't judge -- hubby is an audiophile) make the whole thing somehow work. No visible cords!
I love your videos. Your sense of humour rocks as does your no-nonsense advice. Keep ‘em coming. 😊. You don’t talk too fast-just perfect. I get bored with speakers drone on slowly. I usually watch a lot on 1.25x or even as high as 2x speed but I don’t need to for your videos. Perfection.
Me too! There’s a video where he said that furniture should not be identical twins, but instead, siblings. That made SOOOO much sense to me! That idea helped me so much when decorating my new house!
I would suggest one exception to the cropped curtains rule - they are better if there's a radiator right under the window, as is the case in a lot of older homes (in the UK at least, I can't speak for elsewhere). If you have full length curtains, you have to choose between all the heat being funneled right out the window (especially if you have thick curtains that insulate well) or awkwardly piling up your curtains on top of the radiator every night through the colder months, which leads to them getting very creased and picking up every speck of dust from the top of the radiator. I'll take an effectively heated home over slightly a more aesthetically pleasing window setup every time.
Well in US almost all homes are made from wood so heating element like like a radiator (as the name imply it radiate heat) are not efficient as the wall have no thermal capacity. So often there is ventilation system for force hot air and cooling sometimes. UK and EU lean to brick, stone and concrete homes were they are less drafty, the insulation is on the outside. And use more thermal radiation to heat up the walls. For a weekend homes where you need to heat up the room fast, you use forced air and insulation on the inside. As brick and concrete have double the heat capacity then steel, so it take long to heat up but they also have good R value. And if you clap some outside insulation you basically create a thermal battery. Perfect for fireplace as they fluctuate with the heat output and you catch the excess. And wont get cold immediately as the fire go out. We put ours fireplace in the thick brick baring wall and the wall feel warm even after 4-6 ours after the fire go out. We have no such thing as cold mornings. Also the fireplace is so big and can take such a big thick log and we can close it so much it will burn for almost 6 hours. Often when we wake up there are pleny of embers to start it again.
it's so fun playing where's waldo with your background, trying to find what's new or changed 😂 but for real, it's nice to see you slowly moving in and getting comfortable in your new space ❤
Loved this one! The worst is definitely the short curtains, followed immediately by the differing lighting tones. I hate "garage lighting" anywhere outside of the garage! LOL! Have a great day!
Candles/ oils/ waxes can be So toxic; not enough ppl mind this reality & spend too much time (&$) on masking. Authenticate your space- independent of toxins.
My wife and I got to mark our bingo cards off for the rug size for the furniture size, the matchy-matchy furniture, open storage, lighting (temperature).
I am guilty of poor lighting in the bedrooms. I admit I didn’t put a whole lot of thought into it and now I regret it. But now I’m out of money. But it’s on the list of things to get to.
Nick honestly Thank you, your channel helps me make more informed choices when it comes to decor and furniture and I do see an enhancement in my aesthetics as I am wayyy pickier now (and I was already picky to begin with) ! But I am sooo overanalyzing even a minute detail having your voice in my head and it's delaying my decision-making process hella lot ! Damn this job is hard XD
"Siblings, not twins" The same goes for eyebrows My Restoration Hardware dresser (Mission style with dovetail cedar drawers) is in my garage, but I will not get rid of it! It was my first "nice" furniture purchase after I got my first job as an RN.
Another classic. I adore your sense of humor and look forward to each and every video! I live in the US, so trust me when I say I need all the smiles and laughs I can get right now, so PLEASE keep them coming!!!! The more the better. Thank you for the education and a great time while getting it!💙
This was great! The only thing I might question is the floor length curtains being a must. I notice that the pictures you put up with short curtains, almost all have heaters directly under the window. How do you get around that? The last thing you want to do is cause a fire, which is what most people are afraid of. My own living room currently has 3/4 length curtains. Not because of the radiator, but because my dogs kept pulling them down when they lay there! That's okay, though, because I have a table blocking the view. But how do you get around the radiator problem? Radiators aren't exactly easy to move!
You are a great talker and I love all of the funny things you say, but I especially love that your advice makes so much sense! Your advice has really helped me bring together my space and I really love it, so thank you. 😊
Omg I can't believe people didn't like your color palette video?!! It inspired my living room/ kitchen paint project (open concept room) and imho helped me solve my honey oak problem (my floors are orange wood, my trim is orange wood, my doors are orange wood, my cabinets are orange wood, and I can't afford to replace it all rn... But now the orange fits nicely with the color palette!❤❤) Seriously, a game changer. I should send you a message with pics when it's done (I am hand painting a few decorative things because I like to use my art degree for something sometimes.)
My mom bought cream sofas, forgetting that she has 2 dozen grand kids who visit frequently. Those couches didn't last long! She gave them to me and my children decimated them. They never looked nice and we tried every cleaning tip we could find, even spilled water left a stain. What a nightmare.
my mom did the same when I was about 10yo. I was never allowed to put my feet onto the couch as to not get it dirty abd it was always covered in cream blankets so nobody would directly touch the couches surface. Honestly at that point nobody in the household dared to relax on that couch.
This week i going to get my sofas and cant wait to send you pictures. As a teaser the colors are bold red walls, black, gold and brass accents, dark brown (chocolate), light brow (jute), 6 sources of light, cow hide, sheep skin, jute, rough cotton, real linen. Rug and paintings on the walls, ottomans (with storage) and storage bench, end table (with sockets) and side table with coffee table that can flip up to table height. Upholstered walls around the bed and departing curtains in room not bigger the 160 sq ft (400 the hole apartment). Everything is new even the doors. 5 colors of oak. I start watching your videos quite early on. As a artist i have interest in home design for years and view some show and read some basics. Only two things i maybe change if i do it again is different floor color (little warmer darker brown) and if i should dich the tiles in the kitchen and continue with the laminate. But i always want the subway tile up to the ceiling, with dark grout and all stainless counter and oven with fume hood. And i want to visually split the room. The professional line kitchen mix well with the industrial dining area. I have benches instead of chairs because of lack of room and want little open space. It have the café racer diner vibes, with my biker gear on the stainless fridge, fuel tank on the wall with my biker jacker with a scull (that i also have tattooed on my arm) and meeting pins stretched on a frame. You can critique all day long as i love my place, so no hard feelings. I am a artist so i am use to listen to others opinions.

Yes!
Hi Nick, esthetically I agree with your comment on cropped curtains. However, ever so often the radiators of the heatingsystem are placed underneath the windows to ease convection. And in that case drawn floor length curtains hinder the flow of the warmed air.
yep, all our windows have radiators underneath. Every. single. one. O.o
Roman shades work well, with curtains framing them, but not drawn closed. Just draw down the shades.
I have puppet show curtains, but mounted inside the window casing and just skimming the sill. So they function essentially like blinds, but are easy to just slide back out of the way. I frame them with full-length curtains during the colder months.
Try using a roller blind, they don't have to go to the floor.
10:05 first thing I did when we put an offer in for our new house was I made graph paper mock ups of the rooms and I have them stored in my home projects file in the filing cabinet. Really worth it.
Talking that fast is a talent! I'm impressed!
I have the same talent 😌
LOL, YES, there were sheets covering the couches and we were forbidden from sitting in there unless it was a holiday!!
Or plastic covers 😂
In my old neighborhood, the living room furniture was actually covered in plastic! And no one used it except once a year, or for special guests.
Plus, they don't overstay their welcome! 😊
Ok, not the video to watch when you are eating lunch😂. Nick talking faster to meet a time limit only made me eat my lunch the fastest I think i I ever have.
Seriously though such great tips!! Have a great rest of the week Nick.
😂😅😂! I can totally imagine that.
Sitting in the animal hospital ER so thankful for this video to distract and entertain. I’m very happy you’re a talker.
You are one of the very few TH-camrs that I don't have to adjust the settings to a faster speed. Great!
Consider doing a video about how to make a bookshelf look atheistically pleasing? Namely a functional bookshelf with a lot of books
I know it was a simple mistake but atheist pleasing is hilarious.
You need to get some Dawkins and Carl Sagan books, of course
@@laura24590 Brilliant reply !! 📚💙
What some people do is group books by color. It makes the bookshelf look organized. Until the kids or grandkids mess it up again.
a little Speed Nick to make my day: insightful, funny and quick. thank you!
I absolutely love how I don't have to increase the speed when I watch your videos Nick! No bullshit, just advice (and jokes obviously!).
I’ve just bought cushions for my sofa; my colour scheme is blues and greens and antique silver. They came with piping in bright red and look fabulous (opposite side of the colour wheel). I wasn’t expecting that colour piping but I think it looks terrific.
I love your fast speech! It reminds me of my family who are a bunch of talkers with interesting lives and experiences. When you get us all together, it's amazing!
I loved the little smiley ghost thing on your TV ❤👻
I had to look after your comment!! Thx!
I love talkers that enunciate and entertain. You do both! That’s why I keep coming back. Your teacher didn’t appreciate your talent.
OMG... just spit coffee on my keyboard when he said "Puppet Show Curtains".
Riiiiight?!!! OMG. I'm full-on dead Hee! Hee! 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I couldn’t stop laughing
Right ?!?!? I died laughing too 😂😂😂
My media console is exactly the same width as my TV.
Perfection.
Your color advice is most valuable to me. I’m way too matchy matchy. Trying to break that habit.
Me too! There’s a video where he said that furniture should not be identical twins, but instead, siblings. That made SOOOO much sense to me! That idea helped me so much when decorating my new house!
For the TV over the fireplace, but a MantleMount! It can be above the fireplace when not in use and you can pull it down when you’re watching TV.
I love these videos. Not only do you tell us “mistakes” but you help us fix them and point us to more in depth videos when available. ❤
Loved this one! The worst is definitely the short curtains, followed immediately by the differing lighting tones. I hate "garage lighting" anywhere outside of the garage! LOL! Have a great day!
Nick musta had like 10 espressos before the vid 🤪😅 someone’s hyper! Always love his advice, though. 10/10 would recommend signing up for his class! 😇
Maybe he hadn’t taken his ADHD meds for the day. No shade, this is how my friends identify when I haven’t taken mine 😝
I don't drink coffee anymore! Haven't had one in about 6 months.
@@Nick_Lewisoooyy vey. I am a fast talker and a fast listener but no coffee???? Well done you. My two morning pour-overs are my life.
"Forgetting about smell" . Simply - open your windows, people! Air your place, it works best, I promise.
As long as you don't live near a paper mill or a chicken processing plant or any other such stank. Blech.
I agree👍 Especially if your furniture is new. The toxic off gassing could be responsible for more than a year of migraines without daily fresh air.
I love doing that!
Candles/ oils/ waxes can be So toxic; not enough ppl mind this reality & spend too much time (&$) on masking. Authenticate your space- independent of toxins.
Love the attitude! And of course the expertise❤
My wife and I got to mark our bingo cards off for the rug size for the furniture size, the matchy-matchy furniture, open storage, lighting (temperature).
I love your videos. Don’t change a thing and talk all you want thats why we are here.
The only youtuber i don't need to listen to at 1,5 speed!!
I am guilty of poor lighting in the bedrooms. I admit I didn’t put a whole lot of thought into it and now I regret it. But now I’m out of money. But it’s on the list of things to get to.
One of the only ppl I don’t watch on double speed
THAT is a compliment
Nick honestly Thank you, your channel helps me make more informed choices when it comes to decor and furniture and I do see an enhancement in my aesthetics as I am wayyy pickier now (and I was already picky to begin with) ! But I am sooo overanalyzing even a minute detail having your voice in my head and it's delaying my decision-making process hella lot ! Damn this job is hard XD
"Siblings, not twins" The same goes for eyebrows
My Restoration Hardware dresser (Mission style with dovetail cedar drawers) is in my garage, but I will not get rid of it!
Thank you for the education and a great time while getting it!💙
I make templates using paper bags for furniture and it really helps😊
Yes please to photos. I'm living with honey oak everywhere
That will be so fun to have your own art in your place.
My mom bought cream sofas, forgetting that she has 2 dozen grand kids who visit frequently. Those couches didn't last long! She gave them to me and my children decimated them. They never looked nice and we tried every cleaning tip we could find, even spilled water left a stain. What a nightmare.
What was the fabric? That sounds awful
my mom did the same when I was about 10yo. I was never allowed to put my feet onto the couch as to not get it dirty abd it was always covered in cream blankets so nobody would directly touch the couches surface. Honestly at that point nobody in the household dared to relax on that couch.
Couch covers!
Love your long clips w explanations (eg. Colour palette), but this style is great for quick reminder/ over view
14:38 your coffee table is AMAZING Nick!
Always start with 1.25 then immediately change the speed back to normal on Nicks videos , cause he is so funny and informative i don’t want to miss a single word 😂😅😅
omg, thank you for talking about the hot spots! I hate going over to a friend's house and like having to wear a baseball hat at their dining table because their chandelier points directly into my eyes!
Another winner 🏆 😊!!
Thanks, Nick (on speed!!!)
I disagree too much speed not very relaxing
Finally I found a yapper with no bs and fantastic ideas!!! Even if I can’t keep up I can watch again. ❤
I think that if someone buys a full set with good price it’s ok if the furniture are located in different rooms/floors.
“I’ve been to a ton of open houses and have never gotten a cookie, which is kinda still pissing me off” 😂 Nick, you’re hilarious and truthful all at the same time and I love it!
