MSI RTX 3080 SUPRIM X Thermal Pads Replace

  • In this video you can see how I changed the stock thermal pads (of poor quality) of my MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X with the high quality thermal pads from:
    -Gelid -GP-Ultimate
    -GP-Extreme
    and some
    Thermalright Extreme Odyssey 1.5mm.
On the backplate of the card all the thermal pads are 3,5mm in thickness (height), like you can see in the video.
    Since I didn't have the 3,5mm size I combined 3mm + 0,5mm, but you can also do 2mm + 1,5mm .
On the front of the card, as you can see in the video, you will only need 2mm and 1,5mm thermal pads. You will find all the other sizes in the video.
From my point of view this mod is a must! The stock thermal pads from the factory are of poor quality and the GDDR6X memory of the RTX 3080 runs insanely hot, over 90 degrees Celsius!
Now after I changed the thermal pads, the temps of the memory do not exceed 76 degrees Celsius in full load!
If you are not able to change the thermal pads on your own, take the card to a professional ! .....or do it ON YOUR OWN RISK!
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OR HARM YOU MIGHT DO TO YOURSELF OR TO YOUR GRAPHIC CARD FOLOWING MY VIDEO OR MY ADVICE ! :p
Thanks for watching my videos !

Finally my pads arrived. I was hopping that the temperature would drop 20°. But if it lowered 10º would be something.
    Before: Mem +950, PL 56%, fan 90%: 90000 MH/s, mem temp: 102º
    After: Mem +950, PL 56%, fan 90%: 93000 MH/s, mem temp: 66º
    Then: Mem +1100, PL 65%, fan 70%: 98000 MH/s, mem temp: 70º~72º
    Much more then 20º!

A very big thank you to putting this guide up, it made the task very easy. I bought a 120x120 square of thermalright odyssey in 1.5mm and 2mm thickness, I still have enough left to replace the memory pads if they deteriorate over time.
    Before I changed I was down to 80hm at 106°. Now I'm at 101.5mh at 68°! Incredible, that's almost 40° improvement.

Great video! In the process of replacing my pads now and I’m very thankful for your detailed shots and measurements!
Figured I’d throw this out there for anyone spending FAR too much time trying to clean the leftover pad residue from between the heat sink fins.
After removing the old pad, wet down a q-tip in some Goof Off/Goo Gone/other adhesive solvent. Push/roll the q-tip down the length of the fin and the leftover material should let go and come off in a single piece vs. having to scrape and clean small chunks at a time.
I found isopropyl alcohol didn’t do a good job as a first step if there was leftover pad still left on the surface.
Definitely use alcohol as a last cleaning step to remove the Goof Off though.

Thanks so much MixoBox! I really appreciate you sharing and posting this. I also wanted to share my experience in the comments as others had really helped me with their posts.
I had horrible temps when mining (108 degrees+ at 90Mh/s. Fans 100%, ambient temp 23/24 degrees). It seemed to be getting worse and harder to get the temp down to a level where I wasn;t panicking about damaging the card. So, I bought one 120x120 2.0mm and one 120x120 1.5mm of Thermalright Extreme Odyssey pads (which was more than enough and covers all the thicknesses and lengths you need). I also got some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
Taking apart wasn't too challenging - I used little pots to keep the screws in as I disassembled the card - obviously using your video to guide. I really took my time - super slowly - prepared my workspace, tools and and cotton buds etc. I started off using calipers just to make absolutely sure I my card had the same dimensions - they did. I also got two pieces of card and placed the original, removed, thermal pads in the same placement as the card for reference, which turned out to be a wise move later.
I cut the pieces to size and applied, cleaned everything with 99.7% Isopropyl alcohol. The Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut was extremely thick and sticky so smoothing it out nice and neatly was very difficult. Also I was getting tired and impatient, so made a real mess of it. I reassembled anyway and fired her up. TechPowerUp was showing that temps were maxxing out at 110 degrees, so the card throttled there, and hash-rate was poor. I knew I must have done something wrong, didn't want to damage the card and switched off immediately.
So... I had to open up again. Prime candidate for where I went wrong was the thermal paste application - I made such a mess of it and I was sure over-applied. I ordered some Arctic MX-5 and decided I'd reapply no matter what but didn't want to use the Thermal Grizzly (it was like thick glue). My other fear was "Did I definitely remove the transparent plastic from the thermal pads before reassembling?". It's the kind of thing I expect of myself when tired and impatient. But no, there was no film on any of the pads.
Then I saw it. ONE pad was completely missing!! I spotted it on the video, then checked my board of the original pads and there it was - my replacement pad was sitting there with it's plastic film one (I'd placed them side by side on the board as I went). What an idiot! I missed an entire chip. It was the number 5 pad (15mm x 12.5mm) for a chip on the board right below the NVIDIA processor. I felt so stupid.
Card back in and I was praying...
Now I am mining at 97Mh/s. Memory temp is at 78 degrees and staying firm with memory clock at 1100MHz.
I'm going to experiment as now it's all open to new settings. But I'm so so pleased.
Thanks again. And thanks to all the people who added their experiences as it really helped me.

electronics spray removes way more way better. and you dont have to risk snagging anything on any of the chips. you should try it. wd40 contact cleaner or crc electronics cleaner. I have both and they both work fine. you just need to let the card sit in a open area overnight so it all evaporates and you end up with a pcb that looks like it just rolled out of the factory....Perfection.

The problem is that you are measuring the thickness of the pads and not the actual gaps themselves. The stock pads are probably more compressible, thus the actual gap can be smaller than those f.e. 3.5mm that you've measured on the back.

i have same card and I've seen some people say u can use a 3mm on this,i bought only 3mm because some people said 3mm also it's good and i close the backplate with only 3mm the it had huge space between pad and the pcb ,and i added 0.05 that i had left from other cards and you CANNOT use 3mm at all barely touches the top of the smd's like 0.01~0.02 don't even try to use the card with 3mm ,used grizzly but the material its too hard for it to go in between the smd's so its doesn't touch the surface well, i pressed it a bit but didn't do much difference, it's a bit more stable i managed to raise the clocks at 1000+ mhz from 850, before it would had crashed if i had tried to put it at 1000mhz+ the temperature fell like 4-6 degrees, couldn't find 3.5mm anywhere changed the pads only on back of the vram, not on the sides also, because i didn't had enough 0.5mm.
Changed my pads, sold as 17w and 20w ,was some cheap chewing gum.
left side on cooler the pad was 1mm and the next was 2mm, weird enough. and the last one one the right side 1mm
in this video all 1.5 mm or 2mm

How much improvement to expect on a MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X where VRAM reaches 90°C thanks to fans trying hard to maintain it there?
My silent BIOS works fine, though the fans ramp up to 2000rpm to maintain 90-92°C on VRAM and 80-82°C on GPU under heavy load.
They didn't go that high during winter though, max rpm was about 1500 back then. Now I have ordered enough Gelid GP-Ultimate pads to make this upgrade on my card as well. It'll take a while for the pads to arrive though.
Since we have to use 2,0mm with 1,5mm for the backplate, did anyone tried to combine the pads with paste between 2,0 and 1,5mm ones? Does this give any boost to the efficiency?

    • @mixobox2334
      @mixobox2334  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I say at least 10°C improvement and more if you do it right. You don't need to add termal paste between two layers of thermal pads, don't over complicate things😉

@@clamatac So you changed the thermal pads and your temps are still the same and very high?(How is your oc...undervolt of the card? How is the airflow of the case...the ambient temp.?) Now to answer your questions....:
      1. In the video you linked, he only talks about one thermal pad size(2mm) and at the time he says "2mm pads" the camera is focused on the memory modules of the card ! So he only refers to the Vram pads(the most important pads for our problem " for high VRAN temps!"). You should see improvements with only as little as changing the memory pads! This is of course true only if the stock thermal pads are trash and your VRAM temps are very high!
      2. The thermal pads for custom waterblocks/back plates are not 100% the same with oem pads..... Because the gaps between the back plate or waterblock can be offset from original ones....only the size (length and width) and the placement on the pcb is the same as original not the hight/thickness! I hope I aswered your questions and made it more clear for you. Cheers m8!
