I liked it better when it was called "Magicite." It may not have been nearly as versatile, but it actually made wondrous items significant. You could buy Materia in the slums of Midgar, where the Mako was supposedly so drained that it would be impossible to form new Materia naturally. Magicite couldn't be bought in stores until after the seal of the Esper world was broken. Magicite evoked a sense of wonder. Materia was one letter off from being mundane.
@@TinyFoxTom I'm confused you dislike a game mechanic because you can buy all but the rarest of versions throughout the game, but like a game mechanic because you're locked out of it until partway through. I get wanting to push your favorite games into a conversation but make sure you're right.
I love games that have lots of spells and abilities you collect as items scattered/hidden all over so it's certainly my favorite but isn't done enough for some reason. Suikoden Runes are kinda similar and awesome as well.
Not sure how much value there is in putting this comment on a nearly-six-year-old video, but maybe folks are running nostalgia playthroughs because of the remake, so here ya go: - Time+Added Effect also inflicts Stop to those vulnerable to it; - Barrett's Ungarmax does better than Omnislash with the Counter-Mime combo if you load Missing Score with high-exp mastered Materia (no overflow needed) - that's 18 hits of 9999, and it's more consistent than Cloud doing 9999 damage with each slash. Not to mention, the animation is much faster; - I'm sure people already know, but Mega All + Master Command makes a good combo, and they don't even need to be paired. You can pair Master Command with a suitable Support Materia to your taste. I use it for Morph-All on Barrett (or Yuffie) to Morph whole enemy parties in one shot; - Odin + Sneak Attack + Preemptive gives you an FF8 Zantetsuken-style summon; - When grinding North Cave, I find it convenient to have Hades + Added Effect on a 4x Cut user. It's mostly for the darn Tonberry King - you get the Stop effect, safe from Everybody's Grudge, and the animation of the 4 swings is much faster than if it was active; - If you're on a non-grind or low-grind playthrough, using Demi + Quadra Magic + W-Magic on Emerald (and IIRC works for Ruby, too) is more efficient than opening with Knights of Round, especially if you only have 1 or 2 levels on KOR. You can deal eight shots of 9999 damage with Demi (and the animation is a billion times faster so you won't have to waste a Materia slot for Underwater) then you can move to Knights when Demi 3 is dealing under 5 or 6k, depending on your threshold preference;
This, my friends, is a man that is passionate about what he likes and does. Final Fantasy 7 is my favorite game ever, and I respect you for the attention that you give to your videos, content and followers.
@@Dylan-xx2io The remake lacked a LOT of materia, and imposed stupid limits on some of the materia (like mp plus only stacking to 100% max boost). And there's only like 4 or 5 summons, and they basically are only allowed in boss fights. It's a very scaled-down version of the materia system of the original. The next installments basically HAVE to expand on it
@@RobinLSL its a single player game. sure you can just fly through it if you want, but i am sure lots of people who played it did care about the interesting stuff!
You can also use Elemental pairing to heal yourself. ex: If you absorb fire damage, you can put the fire elemental combination to your weapon and attack yourself with a basic attack to heal.
I just picked this game up again recently. I was playing it the same way I always did up until leaving Midgar when I decided to see how far guides had come. Now, after everything I've learned, I wonder how I ever beat the game as a kid. In my very first playthrough I beat the game without KotR. I never even knew a Gold Chocobo existed. I didnt have most of the characters ultimate limit breaks or even weapons. Hell, I didnt even use Ultima magic because I thought the materia was bugged (you have to level it once to even use it). Now when I look at everything the FFVII community has discovered I cant help but be in awe at the dedication to such a classic title. I know this video is close to a decade old at this point but thanks for making it anyway, it taught me a couple new tricks. Hope you're doing well.
Note on the Elemental Materia, you can also use Summons with elements (yellow text under their name) Usually it isn't that handy, but Chocobo/Mog on a weapon is the best way to do Wind damage for a lot of the game. (Flying enemies tend to be weak to wind)
*The TRUE highest damage materia combination* **Meteo Knights;** Total Materia Required: 16 *per char* Linked Slots Required: 12 *per char* Materia Setup: Master Magic-Quardra Magic Comet2-Mp Turbo, Comet2+MP Absorb Comet2-Added Cut Counter Magic-Comet2 W-Magic-Mime, Mega All-Enemy Skill Final Attack-Phoenix, Each time Comet2 is cast, it will land 40 hits + 8 added cuts. When comet2 is cast it will absorb massive amounts of MP. Each time an enemy strikes, Meteo Knight counters with Comet2 x8 + 8 added cuts. Mime Comet spams to be recast for no mp by any character with the setup. -e This can do 1,439,856 at its max potential from a single counter magic phase. It's also worth noting this can be pushed even further with a few alterations to the materia setup.
Filipe Patriani every single materia is good if it's paired with the right thing. trust someone who spent two thousand hours plus playing the game in his teenage years. Everything works with something. just gotta find out what! it's all about experimenting, brother. :D
@@ar_marium1125 There was a few items that did massive damage if you threw them at the right enemy, but it was never better than everything else. Also, it flat damage based, so it suffered less from defense and does higher damage early game.
Picked it up again after 20 years and it’s still the best game I’ve ever played, but I’ve apparently been playing it wrong, this video will help us out greatly!!
I never knew you could add "Added effect + summon materia" . Essentially, I could use "added effect + Hades" to become immune to most ailments if I put it in an armor slot. Liked and Subbed!
@@draco89123 You should have hades before getting more than 1 ribbon though... which makes it possible to block a lot of troublesome effects on everyone if you can master the hades materia before getting to disk 3
@@DarkFrozenDepths nope, 1st ribbon is on temple of the ancients and 2nd while climbing gaea's cliff, a little after starting disc 2; hades you can get after acquiring the submarine, finishing disc 2
Those combinations were....CRAZY!!! Just downloaded FF7 to my PS3 and I'm looking forward to trying some combos oft own now. Haven't played it since I was a kid.
Playing this for the first time as a 34 year old, cant believe i have always skipped this one (judged a book by its cover) and i am loving it. This guide is super helpful 10 years after you posted it so thank you!
Bruno Costa I learned about some of the hectic materia combos around 99/2000 when searching the internet to beat ruby. it this day I still never beat emerald. it's easy to watch a video detailing how to make omnislash and knights of the round wreck... it's another thing to get that many mime and counter materias lol

I'm gonna get it on steam and have a go with the 7th heaven mod.
D2daK87 I had the opposite issue. Beat Emerald no problem, but I still struggle with Ruby. Going for the Platinum on PS4 now so I hope I can do it this time!
JagEagleAC3 good luck! with some of these combos it shouldn't be a problem. There's a glitch you can use with Vincent if he has his death penalty weapon. but it requires he makes lots of kills with it.
This was extremely educational, I have finally gotten around to playing ff7 and I'm loving it so far, after this I'm replaying ff15 and then going back around to my favorite ff9
+4-8Productions And to think I thought FF7 players left it in the dust to rot after all these years...2013. One of the rarest years to find a video of this game on. Great job!
+4-8Productions I've always wanted to play FFVII but I don't have a PlayStation or an IPad 3. Even still when I found out about the usage of materia I was extremely confused about which materia does what, how exactly do you use it, and some useful combinations (I would be more about perseverance and status infliction/resistance than raw firepower). After seeing this video, you helped me understand some aspects of it. I have FFIV on my IPad 2 and I can see how augments relate to materia in a basic sense. It's not much to ask, but could you do a video about how materia works for beginners? It would be most appreciated for me and others who have just acquired a copy.
I've played this game through over 10 times and I didn't know half the stuff you mentioned in this video - I'd never even heard of some of the materia you had Awesome video, would love to see more FF7 content
I've mastered this game forwards and backwards and you've got some interesting ideas. But here's one you didn't mention that I think is completely broken: Mastered Command + HP Absorb || Mastered Command + MP Absorb || Double Cut (4x Cut) + Long Range This materia combo will allow you to 4x Cut from max range without losing damage as well as heal you for 4k and restore 400 MP to you after every 4x Cut. This is so broken that I am almost certain Square probably didn't mean for Mastered Command to work this way. I love it though. I can literally defeat every boss in the game simply by 4x Cutting. Emerald and Ruby included. Hope someone enjoys this combo. It's a blast......if you don't mind the game being to stupid easy to beat LOL. Happy Fantasies!
I mean you can't get this combo before the end of the game and to get Master Command you need to either beat an optional postgame boss or grind an absurd amount of time. It's completely ok for this to trivialise everything else.
Part of the reason I like the Materia system is because they clearly didn't account for every enumerated possibility on the mathematical combinations lol so creativity mattered and they didn't quite limit every stackable option to break the game.
This is my first video I've watched of yours and i automatically subscribed when i saw all of your mastered counter attack materias. I respect your dedication, you have earned a fan!
FF7 is my favorite game in life, for how hard it hit me and how adventurous and unknown it was. I had played US FF2 and FF3 but had no idea where 7 would take it. I didn't have internet or Nintendo Power or anything, just my love of the series so far and a buddy who would play while i took a nap and we only played that game for days and days. I am revisiting and looking f'en everything up these days and I was blown away by your coverage of the revived Aeris. These videos are blowing my mind. I didn't know summon worked with some of the blue materia like it does, i didn't know counter-attack+mime worked like it does. I am fully inspired to play a pre-educated play through of FF7 now. OMF TY, the nostalgia is beyond measure.
My buddy was playing recently and paired Added Effect and Odin in Tifa’s armor and gave her the Curse Ring. So she gets the massive stat boost of the Curse Ring but is immune to the Instant Death countdown that comes with it.
Wow I did not expect this video to be so funny, the beginning especially got me to really laugh a few times like with the description of Safer Sephiroth and the "All" counter. Also mad props for actually grinding out all this materia instead of just testing with hacks, you're insane.
I'm 53 seconds in, and I already want to thank you for the effort you put into this video. Just re-purchased FF7 on the switch so this video is just the ticket. Legend.
My mind is blown with this. I feel like I was playing FFVII wrong this whole time. Excellent video and I am now tempted to download FFVII again on either my phone, PS Vita or PS4.
Kevin Silva best combo was having all characters with mime/counter and have one character with knights of the round and have one character with final attack/phoenix
Cool info....thanks!!! I've played this game literally 15 times probably. I want to play again now to do the 8x omnislash one. I've done the massive farming before MANY MANY times...lol....so I can do it again.... Ugh
Nice tutorial. :D Here come _some_ fixes and details, hoping this could help. *All* _"All next to any other magic Materia"_ All does nothing with Comet, Contain, FullCure, Shield, Ultima, Exit Materias and Resist from Heal. _"All the enemies on the field"_ It's the same thing with the allies. In a side attack battle, All effect only applies to one group / side. Although they seem to be on the allies, you actually can kill 1 or 2 Pyramids and damage Reno at the same time with for example All + Ice, and 1 or 2 Waterpolos and Bottomswell with for example Matra Magic. _"If it's mastered you can do it up to five times"_ Notice that you can combine more than 1 All to add more uses, like with Final attack, Quadra Magic, Mega all and summons. You can cast the spell deactivating the all effect pressing R1/Page down before selecting a target (and the remaining All uses won't decrease). _"Lowers the attack of the combined Materia down to one third of its original damage"_ The damage dealt but also the probability of inflicting a status are 2/3 of the original values. *Elemental* On the armor, lvl 1 Elemental will half the damage & accuracy from the combined element, lvl 2 will nullify the damage and lvl 3 and 4 will Absorb it. If an attack is nullified, it also can't inflict any status. If an attack is absorbed, it also heals the statuses it tried to inflict and inflicts the statuses it tried to heal. The main elements are Fire, Ice, Lightning, Earth, Poison, Restorative, Gravity, Wind, Water, Holy. You can combine the Hidden element using Elemental + a non elemental non blue Materia, ie: Elemental (lvl 3) + Steal on the armor will absorb the Ultima Weapon's ray. The element of a Materia isn't necessarily the element of its spells. Ie: Choco/Mog's Death Blow and Fat Chocobo are non elemental attacks but Elemental + Choco/Mog = Wind. Typoon's Disintegration is a Fire + Ice + Lightning + Earth attack but Elemental + Typoon = ... Wind too. Kujata's Tetra disaster is a Fire + Ice + Lightning attack but Elemental + Kujata = Hidden. The element is written in yellow in the Materia menu, except for Hidden (lol). You can check the combinations in the Status menu pressing Circle/OK. *Added Effect* _"If you put Poison and Added Effect in your armor then you're protected against poison"_ Notice that being immune to the Poison status makes you to nullify the Poison element. This makes the Poison Ring to work pretty like a 6000 Gils Star pendant. _"With Added Effect and Time Materia you can slow an enemy"_ Or Stop. _"If you put Time into Added Effect Materia in your armor it protects against Slow and Paralysis"_ It protects against Haste (bug), Slow and Stop but not Paralysis. _"If you pair Contain Materia with Added Effect you can cause Petrify, Confusion, Berserk and Paralysis"_ That's Petrify, Confusion and Stop. Not Berserk, and Paralysis is definitely another status. :p _"Choco/Mog you can cause Paralysis"_ It's Stop here too. _"Hades you can cause Poison, Confusion, Sleep, Silence, Mini or Toad"_ Note that Hades' Cauldron also has Slow and Paralysis, though Hades + Added Effect hasn't. If you're immune to Death then you're also immune to Death penalty. Whereas if you're immune to Petrify, you're NOT immune to Slow-numb. And Slow-numb still can inflict Petrify... then you can't remove Petrify cause you're immune. You can check the combinations in the Status menu pressing Circle/OK twice. Added Effect on the weapon has 19 % chances per hit per target (if you didn't just miss the targets) to inflict the combined statuses (all at the same time). The only exception is that the Flash command has 100 % chances to inflict any status (if you didn't just miss the targets, again). Added Effect on the armor always has 100 % chances to protect against the statuses. *MP Turbo* The best part with MP Turbo is that no spell can cost more than 255 MP. For example, KotR combined to a mastered MP Turbo costs 250 + 50 % = 375 MP, capped to 255 MP. So you pay 5 extra MP only whereas that attack is still increased by 50 %. MP Turbo also increases the probability to inflict statuses, which is funny with Poison, Choco/Mog, Odin,... *Combo with several copies of a Magic (or Summon) Materia* Effects only apply on LEARNED spells, not necessarily all the spells of the Materia. Ie: Fire (mastered) + All ; Fire (lvl 2) + MP Absorb => Fire and Fire2 can be cast on all and absorb MP but Fire3 can just be cast on all. *Automatic actions* _"It's only good for 8 Counter-Attacks"_ This is true also for Sneak Attack, Magic Counter, Counter and Final Attack. Actually each character can have 8 automatic actions at the total, not for each type). Ie: 8 Counter Attacks and Final Attack + Phoenix => when you die, you just DIE. The 9th automatic action is ignored. Final Attack + Phoenix and 8 Counter Attacks => it actually does the same cause Counter Attacks have the priority over Sneak Attack, Counter, Magic Counter and Final Attack. They come first then the 9th automatic action is ignored. 7 Counter Attacks and Final Attack + Phoenix => this time you're doing it right. If you survive you attack 7 times and if you die you cast Phoenix. *Counter + Mime* _"KotR with 7 copies of Magic Counter, 6 copies of Mime, HPMP"_ It's of course 1 Magic Counter for KotR and 6 Counter for Mimes. But this combo would cast KotR 6 times (779.922 damage), not 7. Assuming you didn't cast KotR yet and it's lvl 5, when you're hit, what would happen is: - Magic Counter + KotR => casts KotR then the remaining summon power (max uses) = 4 - Counter + Mime => casts a FREE KotR (uses no MP and no summon power) - Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 3 - Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 2 - Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 1 - Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 0 - Counter + Mime => fails cause the summon can't be cast anymore (you will be able to cast KotR with the next free mime, manually or with Counter, in another turn if you do nothing else) You could fix this by simply adding a Master Summon, which gives unlimited power to the character's summons. Or if you don't have a Master Summon yet, by removing KotR from this character. You cast KotR first with another character (manually or not). Then the Mime Materia won't be able to decrease the summon power of the character as he carries no KotR himself. And with the freed slot you can add a 7th Counter + Mime. If the ally casts KotR twice with W-Summon, then the counter would be 14 KotR. Each "turn" (basically), the 1st Mime of each character is free. The others (ie the Counter Mimes after the 1st) are nerfed. When I say "free": free of MP, summon power, All power, Quadra Magic power, Gils (with Coin), and it also keeps the effects All, Quadra Magic, MP Turbo, HP Absorb, MP Absorb, Added Cut, Steal As Well. The non free mimes will cost MP, Gils, and lose HP Absorb, MP Absorb, Added Cut, Steal As Well effects. All, Quadra Magic and MP Turbo can be lost or added: they now depend on if the character who's miming possesses these combinations himself (and not out of power). When Mime drops the Quadra effect, it's replaced by the All effect. xD Both free and non free mimes will never consume any item (with Item, W-Item, Throw) and always empty the Limit gauge when miming a Limit. Here are some advanced combinations. *Recovery* (looks like a bug but not a bug) Weapon = Ice + Elemental, Odin + Added Effect Armor = Ice + Elemental (lvl 3-4) or Aurora rod => So you can attack yourself to heal, as Ice is absorbed, with having 19 % chance to inflict Death, which would be replaced by Recovery due to the absorption. Ice and Water can be absorbed in the mid/early game but you should replace them as your Elemental reaches lvl 3. *Double Sneak* (more like a bug) Sneak Attack + Steal lvl 2, Steal lvl 1 => You actually sneak with Mug AND Steal. The same works with Counter instead of Sneak Attack or Throw instead of Steal. Other example: Counter + Throw lvl 1, Counter + Steal lvl 2-3, Master Command. => This will counter with Throw, Coin, Mug and Steal. With only 2 Counter. *ATB killer* (definitely a bug) Added Effect + Hades or Seal, Added Effect + Contain or Choco/Mog or Time => Dealing Stop and Sleep *simultaneously* freezes the target indefinitely. xD If the target is immune to Stop or Sleep, you still can deal with the others statuses from Hades and Contain. And just to not leaving you without giving some of my own: *Odin & Chocobo Lure* => Because each enemy has 91% chances to instant die, 99% with MP Turbo, and Chocobos are immune to Death so they don't counter and flee. It can work with Destruct but the success chances would be too low, or with Remove, but it needs 10000 AP. Odin does the job just fine. You can also add a Sneak attack to Odin to capture the Chocobo ASAP. *2 Magic Pots in only 1 turn* Master Command + Added Cut, W-Item => After any command, the character will attack the target. As the Magic Pots require an Elixir and often spawn by 2, you only have to give an Elixir to them. What happens is Elixir on Magic Pot A, Added Cut on it, Elixir on Magic Pot B, Added Cut on it. The Added Cut + Master Command also applies to some other commands, which is nice with 2x Cut, 4x Cut, Slash-all and Flash. That's all folks! Have fun
I learnt mostly from gamefaqs (all TFergusson's guides on deep mechanics are amazing), and also exploring the game with data editors (you can take a look at qhimm forums) and doing tons of testing with friends to find bugs and weird behaviors. Some basic infos were already in the manual.
Mad props to this guy. Like others have said, one of my favorite games that I've played probably a dozen times over 20 years and still learned something new from your craziness. Well done, sir.
That's why FFVII is my favorite game of the series. All other games restrict you to class specific abilities but FFVII gives your almost complete freedom for combos
I can't get into the groove of playing it on my vita. But I think I might have a run through of the game before the remake comes out. Pity I can't continue from my ps1 save back in the day :/
Roy Famacion I'm too addicted to redstone on minecraft to play anything else on my vita. But I'm definitely tempted to give this game ago again. Downloaded it a couple years ago and still haven't played it :/ I've never played crisis core, I don't think it ever came out over here.
+King Leviticus Finally started playing this again. Just grinding out a few levels and levelling materia before I head to the ancient city. Loving playing this game again, don't even miss minecraft :)
I loved preparing for the Emerald Weapon battle. It seems like it took about a half an hour organizing armors, materia and weapons. I never used final weapons except in the battle square because I wanted the materia growth generally using the two weapons with triple growth exclusively throughout the game.
Never played this game but found the concept of combat and all the combinations sorely missed in modern day games, everything is being simplified and it’s refreshing to see a game with a multitude of different approaches and customisations. Where are these game designers hiding ?
So, the first time I played this game I was.. 9 i think. the last time i played it all the way through was probably when i was 14. I did not know any of this shit. I figured some of the reaaaaallly basic stuff out, but back then the internet was simply not nearly as accessible, so I couldn't just look this shit up. I can't wait to go do another playthrough knowing all this, the mechanics with materia are actually really god damn cool.
How is it that at this time 588 people disliked this video? Listen, this man committed a portion of his LIFE to make this video. This is a lesson that someone will ALWAYS find a reason to HATE. Take this lesson and go succeed and forget about what people think. I'm sure this took an unimaginable amount of time and he said this was on the master save file not to mention any other files. May GOD bless you, young man.
I wouldn't conclude that people hate stuff from a video with a 98%+ likes ratio. That's very generous. ^^ I get what you mean, and this video may be nice and all, yet it's far from perfection. I love Materias and combos in general and I came to learn new tricks and tips, but what I've heard was tons of errors. So, yeah, I was kind of disappointed. But that doesn't mean I hate Death. I even participate in comments while I'm fully aware this is used to reference the video. Also, the vid is 7 years old, so I guess Death knows stuff better know. Nonetheless, I think most people who disliked it did so for other reasons, maybe the jokes or the quality of audio or edition or because "it has too many likes". I can understand the first two.
I actually fought the Ghost Ship at the Underwater Reactor, sensed it and found out it was weak against Holy Damage. I was also trying to morph it. I put Holy and Elemental together, and sure enough it did a lot more damage.
Thanks TH-cam for showing me this right after i finish my run. Still have to do the weapons and may as well grind in the process just to use this info. Didn't realize you could use copies of materia for additional combos that's awesome
I bought FF7 on PC a few days ago, havent played the game since the 90's and then i thought i had done everything you could do in the game. Oh boy was i wrong. The internet is amazing for finding information about the game you play. So many things i never even knew about back then.
This guy cracks me up. I learn veey little because i done the same thing. Find out the best way. I just like to watch because he is funny and he cares about teaching people.
Elemental Attributes are potentially a double edge sword... If your attack element matches the defensive element, it won't do much (or worse heal). One combination I like is Poison + Elemental (yes this works also) in armor, so that if I get Poisoned, it HEALS me instead.
I like this too. You however need to not being immune to the Poison status (that's why Poison Ring sucks) and being attacked by an attack inflicting the Poison status but without having the Poison element (if you absorb the attack, you also lose the Poison status). Without using the enemies, you can only use Poison paired to Added Effect then attack your character, or use Bad Breath. Being immune to the others statuses of Bad Breath can be done with some extra Added Effects.
@@PhillipJohnsonphiljo oh didnt remember it working like that. Im pretty sure I had knights and neo baha mastered and stuff and dont remember getting more copies
Thanks for keeping ff7 alive and rekindling my interest, I might have to go and do another 100% run, should go a lot smoother now that internet has thoroughly spread about
i have mastered all materia so i simply had to subscribe, because you mastered every materia multiple times simply for the knowledge and i respect that to no end! F'N fantastic job and thank you for the time and effort you put in. Cheers Mate!
Usually people always talk about one winged angel or the boss theme, but I think Barrett's theme deserves to be called one of the best on the OST. And it fit perfectly in this video :)
I just wrapped up FF7 REMAKE the other day, I know, late as hell. Had a huge backlog, still do actually. Anyway, I am about to replay this gem. I have two weeks paid time off before the New Year. So this video is right up my alley. Thank you!
Hahahah, oh man, great video. Learned a lot. My favorite thing tho, is we customize our window in ff7 the exact same way! Made me love it all the more!
Wouldn't the most powerful combination be seven sets of counter=mime and a hp mp swap? With a high magic stat and another party member w-summon KOTR precursor, this combo should respond with 14 summons of KOTR totalling 1,819,818 damage.
Counter (blue) + Steal lv.1 (yellow) , then Cover (purple) = one of you guys becomes the ultimate automatic thief. Counter + Steal on everybody automatically empty enemy's pockets all the time 😆 Also pretty sweet Deathblow (yellow) + Steal as Well (blue) on Vincent with some his high precision weaponry (Deathblow tends to miss more often) = instant obliteration plus theft + rising Vincent's kill counter (his final weapon deals more if he killed more enemies) Edit: fooooook!!! Astonishing what you pulled out. I'm shocked. Instant like 👍

Not sure how much value there is in putting this comment on a nearly-six-year-old video, but maybe folks are running nostalgia playthroughs because of the remake, so here ya go:
- Time+Added Effect also inflicts Stop to those vulnerable to it;
- Barrett's Ungarmax does better than Omnislash with the Counter-Mime combo if you load Missing Score with high-exp mastered Materia (no overflow needed) - that's 18 hits of 9999, and it's more consistent than Cloud doing 9999 damage with each slash. Not to mention, the animation is much faster;
- I'm sure people already know, but Mega All + Master Command makes a good combo, and they don't even need to be paired. You can pair Master Command with a suitable Support Materia to your taste. I use it for Morph-All on Barrett (or Yuffie) to Morph whole enemy parties in one shot;
- Odin + Sneak Attack + Preemptive gives you an FF8 Zantetsuken-style summon;
- When grinding North Cave, I find it convenient to have Hades + Added Effect on a 4x Cut user. It's mostly for the darn Tonberry King - you get the Stop effect, safe from Everybody's Grudge, and the animation of the 4 swings is much faster than if it was active;
- If you're on a non-grind or low-grind playthrough, using Demi + Quadra Magic + W-Magic on Emerald (and IIRC works for Ruby, too) is more efficient than opening with Knights of Round, especially if you only have 1 or 2 levels on KOR. You can deal eight shots of 9999 damage with Demi (and the animation is a billion times faster so you won't have to waste a Materia slot for Underwater) then you can move to Knights when Demi 3 is dealing under 5 or 6k, depending on your threshold preference;
remake on ps4 got gamers returning for answers
Post a vid bro. Ff7 ia about get more popular. And when 7R comes out, hardcore ff7 fans are gonna rape the shit out of it.
I love you!
ThePresentation010 well said lol
@@ThePresentation010 It wont be the full 3 disc experience, its going to be Midgar. I think A LOT of fans are going to be let down.
Infinite pages of maxed materia, and you're still stoked about getting a steal trigger in.
You're a true professional, have a like.
This, my friends, is a man that is passionate about what he likes and does. Final Fantasy 7 is my favorite game ever, and I respect you for the attention that you give to your videos, content and followers.
Thanks for the kind words, I am extremely passionate and I'm glad you enjoy my content!
It still is my all time favorite game to this day. I am currently doing my propably 10th replay. Is it still your all time favorite game?
God, I miss the materia system.. Probably the best "system" to ever be used in any ff game...
@tyvek05 no
@tyvek05 no
@tyvek05 not spending $180 on a whole game
I love the remake, but the materia system in this game is so much cooler. Maybe in the future parts we'll get some crazy combinations too.
The next installments basically HAVE to expand on it
And yet 10 year old me beat the game mostly just spamming Attack with every character.
That's because the game is easy enough and the basic attacks strong enough that the interesting don't actually really help.
Lol i know right ?
@@RobinLSL its a single player game. sure you can just fly through it if you want, but i am sure lots of people who played it did care about the interesting stuff!
i bet 10 year old you didnt defeat the weapons though...
That's because you were way over leveled thus spending waaay to much time in a area thus wasting time.
Funny this is you probably haven't changed 😂😆
Man i'm just getting into FF7, i'm eleven hours in and i FINALLY know what to do with the all materia, this game is way cooler than i thought
You using mods on pc? Only way to play
@@inglouriousmofoNothing wrong with playing it base.
Note on the Elemental Materia, you can also use Summons with elements (yellow text under their name)
Usually it isn't that handy, but Chocobo/Mog on a weapon is the best way to do Wind damage for a lot of the game. (Flying enemies tend to be weak to wind)
I did elemental materia + Alexander since that’s the only way to have Holy on your weapon.
22 years on and I still love the game as much as I did when I was 7
*The TRUE highest damage materia combination*
**Meteo Knights;**
Total Materia Required: 16 *per char*
Linked Slots Required: 12 *per char*
Materia Setup:
Master Magic-Quardra Magic
Comet2-Mp Turbo,
Comet2+MP Absorb
Comet2-Added Cut
Counter Magic-Comet2
W-Magic-Mime,
Mega All-Enemy Skill
Final Attack-Phoenix,
Each time Comet2 is cast, it will land 40 hits + 8 added cuts.
When comet2 is cast it will absorb massive amounts of MP.
Each time an enemy strikes, Meteo Knight counters with Comet2 x8 + 8 added cuts.
Mime Comet spams to be recast for no mp by any character with the setup.
-e
This can do 1,439,856 at its max potential from a single counter magic phase.
It's also worth noting this can be pushed even further with a few alterations to the materia setup.
So many years thinking a lot of Materias were simply useless or stupid... That and all your grinding, you totally deserve that like!
hahah same thing for so many years. actually almost 20 years now. this has been an amazing discover!
Filipe Patriani every single materia is good if it's paired with the right thing. trust someone who spent two thousand hours plus playing the game in his teenage years. Everything works with something. just gotta find out what! it's all about experimenting, brother. :D
@@TheRealestEric I know you posted this 2 years ago and all, but...
What about Throw materia? Never found it useful, honestly
Knights of the Round, and a couple mimic materia. Activate spell then go read a book. Come back to victory.
Yeah.. just go do something while my little bro watched the sequences 🤣
Wow. This video is 10 years old, and somehow I just now found it. Thanks for the info.
I never knew you could add "Added effect + summon materia"
.
Essentially, I could use "added effect + Hades" to become immune to most ailments if I put it in an armor slot.
Liked and Subbed!
Ribbon's probably better because there aren't any good other accessories. Just minor stat boost stuff.
@@draco89123 You should have hades before getting more than 1 ribbon though... which makes it possible to block a lot of troublesome effects on everyone if you can master the hades materia before getting to disk 3
@@DarkFrozenDepths nope, 1st ribbon is on temple of the ancients and 2nd while climbing gaea's cliff, a little after starting disc 2; hades you can get after acquiring the submarine, finishing disc 2
counter+deathblow, cover, and 2 counter attacks on Cloud. my favorite combo. all mastered of course.
Put them on Vincent with the Sniper CR or Tifa with God Hand and they'll never miss
Holy shit, nearly 20 years and I'm still finding new things about ff7--THIS is the core element of a work of care and love; it keeps giving.
Those combinations were....CRAZY!!! Just downloaded FF7 to my PS3 and I'm looking forward to trying some combos oft own now. Haven't played it since I was a kid.
10 years later this is still one of the materia videos of all time
Rosso-km5jndang it
Playing this for the first time as a 34 year old, cant believe i have always skipped this one (judged a book by its cover) and i am loving it. This guide is super helpful 10 years after you posted it so thank you!
I just picked up this game and a PS1 about 2 months ago as well. Fun stuff.
Jesus. I played this game three times and remained oblivious of the potential of materia combinations oO

For Emerald it is much easier to use Lucky 7 to beat it than grind for those materia combos
This channel and dark pixel gaming are the final fantasy gamings vids youtube needs.
Damn this guy put lotta work into this
I cant believe how many new things Ive learned about such an old game.
Um....I need to go back and play this game, I wasn't even aware you could stack some of those combinations, that is just insane!
This was extremely educational, I have finally gotten around to playing ff7 and I'm loving it so far, after this I'm replaying ff15 and then going back around to my favorite ff9
All these years later and this was still enjoyable to watch. The Omnislash counter was nuts... time to fire up FFVII again and 1-shot Ruby/Emerald. :D
I've been waiting years, literally years, for a video like this! Well done :3
+foxdash I'm glad I could give you what you have been waiting for, hopefully you like my other FFVII videos as well! ;)
+4-8Productions And to think I thought FF7 players left it in the dust to rot after all these years...2013. One of the rarest years to find a video of this game on. Great job!
+4-8Productions dude, please make a how to find all materia video please
+4-8Productions I've always wanted to play FFVII but I don't have a PlayStation or an IPad 3. Even still when I found out about the usage of materia I was extremely confused about which materia does what, how exactly do you use it, and some useful combinations (I would be more about perseverance and status infliction/resistance than raw firepower). After seeing this video, you helped me understand some aspects of it. I have FFIV on my IPad 2 and I can see how augments relate to materia in a basic sense. It's not much to ask, but could you do a video about how materia works for beginners? It would be most appreciated for me and others who have just acquired a copy.
you should just get it on steam any laptop or pc can run it
Congratulations the algorithm has chosen you!!
I've played this game through over 10 times and I didn't know half the stuff you mentioned in this video - I'd never even heard of some of the materia you had
Awesome video, would love to see more FF7 content
This guy has done almost every possible ff7 topic. Just look at his channel
I've mastered this game forwards and backwards and you've got some interesting ideas. But here's one you didn't mention that I think is completely broken:
Mastered Command + HP Absorb || Mastered Command + MP Absorb || Double Cut (4x Cut) + Long Range
This materia combo will allow you to 4x Cut from max range without losing damage as well as heal you for 4k and restore 400 MP to you after every 4x Cut.
Lovely broken, yeah. :D
4x Cut already deals long range damage. ^^
So does Slash All but not 2x Cut, though.
For added fun add master command + steal as well and master command + added cut. Command counter + mime just adds insult to the injury.
I can't use combo like this it's too dirty lol. Nice find though 😂👏
"Like Button. Hit it."
This is my first video I've watched of yours and i automatically subscribed when i saw all of your mastered counter attack materias. I respect your dedication, you have earned a fan!
You sound like my older cousin and RPG enthusiast 20 years ago talking to me when I was stuck on disc 2. It's good to see stuff like this.
I found your channel after getting FF7 on the Switch. Amazing video and I hope you get a lot of attention
Playing on the switch as well! Still fun after all these years!
20 years later, but at least Nintendo finally got it! lol
wait, you can play ff7 on switch? O.O i play on ps2 xD
It's 2018 and I'm still learning something about this game!!!
Greatest game ever made. Proof is people are making videos about it 22 years later. Amaizing.
This is my favorite video game, and you have taught me things after 20+ years. Thank you and thumbs up!
I'm 53 seconds in, and I already want to thank you for the effort you put into this video. Just re-purchased FF7 on the switch so this video is just the ticket. Legend.
This game is insane!!!!
One of the many reason why this is the best FF
Bro, nine years ago and it's so useful this video, I really thank you
My mind is blown with this. I feel like I was playing FFVII wrong this whole time. Excellent video and I am now tempted to download FFVII again on either my phone, PS Vita or PS4.
My fave combos
1.) Final Attack +Phoenix
2.) KOTR+HP Absorb,Mime
Kevin Silva throw a W summon in there along with another copy of kotr and your laughing.
Kevin Silva best combo was having all characters with mime/counter and have one character with knights of the round and have one character with final attack/phoenix

Yesssss
i just got back to ff7. Seeing these video got me up whoopen some WEAPON ass. thank you for making them.
Congratulations and thank you. Can't wait for the PS4 FFVII remake release. :)
Pretty sure this was THE video that brought me to this channel all those years ago...
I’m struggling at the final boss and I’m just learning about materia combinations!! 😢 thanks!! Excellent video!
Nice tutorial. :D
Here come _some_ fixes and details, hoping this could help.
*All*
_"All next to any other magic Materia"_
All does nothing with Comet, Contain, FullCure, Shield, Ultima, Exit Materias and Resist from Heal.
_"All the enemies on the field"_
It's the same thing with the allies.
_"If it's mastered you can do it up to five times"_
Notice that you can combine more than 1 All to add more uses, like with Final attack, Quadra Magic, Mega all and summons.
You can cast the spell deactivating the all effect pressing R1/Page down before selecting a target (and the remaining All uses won't decrease).
_"Lowers the attack of the combined Materia down to one third of its original damage"_
The damage dealt but also the probability of inflicting a status are 2/3 of the original values.
*Elemental*
On the armor, lvl 1 Elemental will half the damage & accuracy from the combined element, lvl 2 will nullify the damage and lvl 3 and 4 will Absorb it.
You can combine the Hidden element using Elemental + a non elemental non blue Materia, ie:
Elemental (lvl 3) + Steal on the armor will absorb the Ultima Weapon's ray.
The element of a Materia isn't necessarily the element of its spells. Ie:
Choco/Mog's Death Blow and Fat Chocobo are non elemental attacks but Elemental + Choco/Mog = Wind.
*Added Effect*
_"If you put Poison and Added Effect in your armor then you're protected against poison"_
Notice that being immune to the Poison status makes you to nullify the Poison element. This makes the Poison Ring to work pretty like a 6000 Gils Star pendant.
_"With Added Effect and Time Materia you can slow an enemy"_
Or Stop.
_"If you put Time into Added Effect Materia in your armor it protects against Slow and Paralysis"_
It protects against Haste (bug), Slow and Stop but not Paralysis.
_"If you pair Contain Materia with Added Effect you can cause Petrify, Confusion, Berserk and Paralysis"_
That's Petrify, Confusion and Stop. Not Berserk, and Paralysis is definitely another status. :p
_"Choco/Mog you can cause Paralysis"_
It's Stop here too.
_"Hades you can cause Poison, Confusion, Sleep, Silence, Mini or Toad"_
Note that Hades' Cauldron also has Slow and Paralysis, though Hades + Added Effect hasn't.
*MP Turbo*
The best part with MP Turbo is that no spell can cost more than 255 MP.
*Combo with several copies of a Magic (or Summon) Materia*
Effects only apply on LEARNED spells, not necessarily all the spells of the Materia. Ie:
Fire (mastered) + All ; Fire (lvl 2) + MP Absorb => Fire and Fire2 can be cast on all and absorb MP but Fire3 can just be cast on all.
*Automatic actions*
_"It's only good for 8 Counter-Attacks"_
This is true also for Sneak Attack, Magic Counter, Counter and Final Attack. Actually each character can have 8 automatic actions at the total, not for each type). Ie:
8 Counter Attacks and Final Attack + Phoenix => when you die, you just DIE.
*Counter + Mime*
_"KotR with 7 copies of Magic Counter, 6 copies of Mime, HPMP"_
It's of course 1 Magic Counter for KotR and 6 Counter for Mimes.
But this combo would cast KotR 6 times (779.922 damage), not 7.
Assuming you didn't cast KotR yet and it's lvl 5, when you're hit, what would happen is:
- Magic Counter + KotR => casts KotR then the remaining summon power (max uses) = 4
- Counter + Mime => casts a FREE KotR (uses no MP and no summon power)
- Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 3
- Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 2
- Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 1
- Counter + Mime => casts KotR then remaining summon power = 0
- Counter + Mime => fails cause the summon can't be cast anymore (you will be able to cast KotR with the next free mime, manually or with Counter, in another turn if you do nothing else)
You could fix this by simply adding a Master Summon, which gives unlimited power to the character's summons.
When Mime drops the Quadra effect, it's replaced by the All effect. xD
Both free and non free mimes will never consume any item (with Item, W-Item, Throw) and always empty the Limit gauge when miming a Limit.
Here are some advanced combinations.
*Recovery* (looks like a bug but not a bug)
Weapon = Ice + Elemental, Odin + Added Effect
Armor = Ice + Elemental (lvl 3-4) or Aurora rod
=> So you can attack yourself to heal, as Ice is absorbed, with having 19 % chance to inflict Death, which would be replaced by Recovery due to the absorption.
Ice and Water can be absorbed in the mid/early game but you should replace them as your Elemental reaches lvl 3.
*Double Sneak* (more like a bug)
Sneak Attack + Steal lvl 2, Steal lvl 1 => You actually sneak with Mug AND Steal. The same works with Counter instead of Sneak Attack or Throw instead of Steal. Other example:
Counter + Throw lvl 1, Counter + Steal lvl 2-3, Master Command. => This will counter with Throw, Coin, Mug and Steal. With only 2 Counter.
*ATB killer* (definitely a bug)
Added Effect + Hades or Seal, Added Effect + Contain or Choco/Mog or Time => Dealing Stop and Sleep *simultaneously* freezes the target indefinitely. xD If the target is immune to Stop or Sleep, you still can deal with the others statuses from Hades and Contain.
And just to not leaving you without giving some of my own:
*Odin & Chocobo Lure*
=> Because each enemy has 91% chances to instant die, 99% with MP Turbo, and Chocobos are immune to Death so they don't counter and flee. It can work with Destruct but the success chances would be too low, or with Remove, but it needs 10000 AP. Odin does the job just fine.
You can also add a Sneak attack to Odin to capture the Chocobo ASAP.
*2 Magic Pots in only 1 turn*
Master Command + Added Cut, W-Item => After any command, the character will attack the target.
Have fun
Just post the link to whatever site you got it from.
I learnt mostly from gamefaqs (all TFergusson's guides on deep mechanics are amazing), and also exploring the game with data editors (you can take a look at qhimm forums) and doing tons of testing with friends to find bugs and weird behaviors. Some basic infos were already in the manual.
Well that was a fun read, thank you!

Man, watching this video makes me want to start a new game for the thousandth time, never gets old.
That's why FFVII is my favorite game of the series. All other games restrict you to class specific abilities but FFVII gives your almost complete freedom for combos
Well you saved me 9999 hours of grinding to know that. Thanks !
I never like videos.. but... this one deserves a big thumbs up. Bravo bro brrraaavvooo
Just started replaying FF7 on my Vita.
This is great help!
sean Clarke playing FFVII on PS Vita is cool on the go :)
I can't get into the groove of playing it on my vita.
But I think I might have a run through of the game before the remake comes out. Pity I can't continue from my ps1 save back in the day :/
im playing FFVII on my PS Vita where ever i go. though i still want Crisis Core on PS Vita

Finally started playing this again.
Just grinding out a few levels and levelling materia before I head to the ancient city.
Loving playing this game again, don't even miss minecraft :)
Good video bro, appreciate the dedication required to test this shizzle. FF7 is a MAJESTIC, yet somewhat unpolished, MASTERPIECE.
I loved preparing for the Emerald Weapon battle. It seems like it took about a half an hour organizing armors, materia and weapons. I never used final weapons except in the battle square because I wanted the materia growth generally using the two weapons with triple growth exclusively throughout the game.
Bro, I can't tell you how much I enjoy these videos. I'm hoping to support you some day
Beat Emrald Weapon today thanks to your lucky 7s strategy! Thanks dude
The funnest combination was Mime + Counter filling all the slots on Cloud and doing Omnislash.
Or Knights of the Round.
Siiick right...
All these years and I still find myself coming here.
I get what you mean, and this video may be nice and all, yet it's far from perfection.
@@ErionAireTam link a better video that I should watch without the errors.
@@rodjoseph5424 Sadly pretty sure that doesn't exist yet.
I actually fought the Ghost Ship at the Underwater Reactor, sensed it and found out it was weak against Holy Damage. I was also trying to morph it. I put Holy and Elemental together, and sure enough it did a lot more damage.
Yuffie's Conformer doesn't lose power when Morphing...
So many things i never even knew about back then.
final attack and Phoenix combo is my favorite
you deserve the views, likes, and subscribes for the effort you put to this video...
mad respect to your knowledge of this game.
Damn dude. It's been a long time since I learned something new about this game. I had no idea you could even DO some of that stuff.
I love this video. I had Phoenix and final attack mastered on 3 characters, and defeated emerald weapon no problem
How did you get 3 phoenix materia?
@@chrissears5482 master a materia to get a new born copy
@@PhillipJohnsonphiljo oh didnt remember it working like that. Im pretty sure I had knights and neo baha mastered and stuff and dont remember getting more copies
Who needs materia combinations when you have Nailbat
Use Throw. Throw all your Nailbats in the faces.
😖🤣
underrated comment
w summon knights of the round and other 2 characters mime and go make a sandwich. When you get back ANYTHING you were fighting will die lol.
"... And Sephiroth." You get a like just for that haha.
My thoughts exactly lol

That music.....so much nostalgia.
Usually people always talk about one winged angel or the boss theme, but I think Barrett's theme deserves to be called one of the best on the OST. And it fit perfectly in this video :)
4-8Productions I loved the whole soundtrack of this game. So any song used bring back alot of positive memories
4-8Productions
Man the ENTIRE soundtrack. Except maybe 1 or 2 songs I can't recall right now
I just wrapped up FF7 REMAKE the other day, I know, late as hell.
"That's right, if you use final attack and Phoenix you can revive the whole damn party!" Fucking hilarious.
Wouldn't the most powerful combination be seven sets of counter=mime and a hp mp swap? With a high magic stat and another party member w-summon KOTR precursor, this combo should respond with 14 summons of KOTR totalling 1,819,818 damage.
If u say that u are talking with another member of the group. Then is not the best SOLO combination.
Man, this makes me nostalgic for older internet
What’s funny to me, though find myself watching your videos every other day even if I’ve seen it.
Counter (blue) + Steal lv.1 (yellow) , then Cover (purple) = one of you guys becomes the ultimate automatic thief.
Counter + Steal on everybody automatically empty enemy's pockets all the time 😆
Also pretty sweet Deathblow (yellow) + Steal as Well (blue) on Vincent with some his high precision weaponry (Deathblow tends to miss more often) = instant obliteration plus theft + rising Vincent's kill counter (his final weapon deals more if he killed more enemies)
Edit: fooooook!!! Astonishing what you pulled out. I'm shocked.
Instant like 👍
