The scene of the chest burster coming out through the guys head, while obviously over the top because this movie is very stylized, is actually really impactful in context. The man with the glasses is a colonist who has been kidnapped and implanted with a chest burster. He knows it’s in him, and he knows what’s going to happen to him. He knows he’s going to die horribly, and he makes the decision that if he’s going to die this way, he’s going to take the man that did this to him (the guy he grabs) along with him. This scene is a man’s desperate, adrenaline-fueled attempt to bring some kind of justice to the world before he dies, and it works really well in my opinion.

Saw this movie as a kid and that was that whole underwater sequence stressed me out the most. The only other parts that bothered me was when the acid dripped on the wheelchair guy's ear and when the general pulled out a piece of his brain (lol). Curiously, I didn't have a problem with the clone room and I actually found the hybrid's death to be strangely satisfying in its own way.

  • @teodor.2k
    @teodor.2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +558

While I agree with most of what you said here is where I don't:
    1. "They didn't explain why Ripley needed to be cloned." Actually, they did: The DNA samples of her were mixed with these of the alien queen so the scientists could not recreate them separated. That's why experiments 1-7 were mixtures between humans and xenomorphs. I don't think genetics really work this way but I can go with it.
    2. "The idea of having the aliens trapped as pets from the beginning of the movie was bad." They've been talking about the idea of using the xenomorphs for military research since Alien. This movie finally shows what happens when people don't listen to Ripley. She did warn them... I think it's a good idea that was poorly executed :)
    3. "The fear is taken away from the movie." I've watched this movie as a child and I shat my pants. As a grown-up I don't think that all Alien movies need to be horror movies. Aliens isn't. It's a "Terminator 2" with xenomorphs. Resurrection should've been the same thing only on steroids. Ripley can kill fucking aliens with her bare hands now! So much wasted potential.
    4. "You cannot show the creature so much!" Well, that's because the creature usually is a person in a costume. I don't think Ridley Scott will keep the alien hidden all the time in Covenant.
    5. "The newborn is stupid." It's another cool idea: "We have Ripley that is a xenomorph, why not have a xenomorph that is a human as well?" That's where the movie needs to go. The design is brutal. This thing is deformed and it's fucking mad! Again, that's what happens when the military scientists meddle with things they don't fully understand.

  • @dirtearth
    @dirtearth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

So I have been watching reviews by Chris non stop and have agreed whole heartedly with basically all of them. This was bound to happen at some point. But at least 50% of his critique is built around a concept he missed. Which is Ripley was cloned because of the alien inside her. She is genetically part alien. This explains everything about her behavior being so different and why the scientists chose her. I am not saying this film is perfect it was definitely a left field move to get Jeunet to direct. But I also think it is deceptive of Chris to call him "the director of Amelie" as opposed to "the director of Delicatessen and City of Lost Children". Both of which bear much more resemblance to the style and mood here. If you want to hate this movie that is cool but do it because you think the series shouldn't have been given to such a pulpy over the top black humor French director and it pisses on the legend of the series. I understood clone Ripley was part alien when I watched this as a dumb 15 year old. I see where having the aliens confined could have made them less scary but lets remember this is the future (even relative to the first films) and technology would have progressed. I honestly think the scenes where Brad Dourif taunts the aliens and then their inevitable escape knowing how he has provoked them honestly terrified me as a teenager.

The director’s name is Jean Pierre Jeunet and he is SO much more than “the guy who directed Amelie”. He also did fantastic films like The City of Lost Children and Delicatessen, which, much like Alien: Resurrection, are weird, avante-guard-adjacent sci-fi and/or horror stories. His style isn’t for everyone, but Alien: Resurrection is NOT ‘some shitty film he made before he Got Good and did Amelie.’ It’s actually much more in line with the rest of his body of work; intentionally and beautifully strange, not everyone’s cup of tea but very enjoyable to those who like the sub-genre that Jeunet works in.

Ripley's baby is hideous and acts like a demon spawn, but I cried when it was being sucked away/torn apart out into space, because it's eyes looked human, and it was screaming for it's mom....also, I was suffering from postpartum, and my baby girl was crying at the same time. All the things Chris hated, I loved about this movie. Especially, when they swam over to that one location, and it there was a fucking nursery of those damn things. That scene when they were climbing the ladder, and Ron Perlman hangs upside down to shoot that asshole alien is cool to me. Also, when two of the aliens turns on their brother, so it's blood will burn thru the floor so they can escape, and when Ripley's baby tore the Queen's jaw or head off, were some good scenes.

I totally acknowledge its major flaws but It just seemed like he took the quick, easy, and obvious criticisms and posted the video to get it out of the way. I was hoping to see him dive into this the way he dove into Alien 3 because to me that movie is irredeemable but he completely justified his reasons for liking aspects of it. I'll admit it is interesting that the clone Ripley got the traits and strengths of the Xenomorph. In the other films the Xenomorphs got the traits of their hosts, it stands to reason that the Ripley clone would have the traits of the DNA of the alien inside her.
The problem is that they never do anything with it. The biggest thing they do with this concept is show her using her high reflexes with the basketball scene and showing her superior strength by ripping the Face Hugger off of her face by herself in a later scene.

This was the first alien movie i saw as a kid and i actually found it very very creepy, even when the plot didnt make much sense to me. The deformed ripley asking to be killed, the alien killing their own to escape, the frozen to death dismemberment of soldiers, Gediman giving himself to the creature and that grotesque death of the newborn. That level of gore, insanity, absurdity, and the inconsistency of the tone you point out kind of elevates the sense of fear that i get from it (which is why I love the films of David Cronenberg btw). Having said so it disappoints me that you can't get over your fanatism of the franchise to try and give it a proper review. I thought it was pretty clear the reason they cloned Ripley was to resurrect the queen xenomorph that she was impregnated with in Alien3 (their DNA was mixed in Ripley's blood sample). This explains why there's a bunch of earlier failed clones that didn't get the Ripley/xeno mix right. Heck, even the final Ripley clone wasn't completely perfect because Ripley inherited some xeno abilities, namely improved reflexes and intelligence; and the queen inherited Ripley's ability to give birth to a human/xeno fetus instead of laying eggs.

I think the word we're looking for is "retcon". There was no exposition in the first three Alien movies that even alluded to the idea that the alien lifecycle is anything other than a facehugger laying an egg which grows within the host until it has matured and bursts free. So it's "proven" only in the sense that it was established in the same movie that made these dumb decisions. I am a Joss fanboy, but even he is allowed to be fallible at least once. I also got the impression that Sigourney Weaver herself meddled with the script, since she had the idea two movies ago that she wanted Ripley to make love with an alien, which is damn close to what we get in the final scenes of Resurrection.

No redeeming qualities? Well, Alien Resurrection may not be a good *Alien* film, in fact it's a pretty awful Alien film, but if argue that it's a damn good action comedy film, if not a pretty awesome one. Amazing performances from the cast, enhanced by Whedon's writing (this film is basically a precursor to Firefly). Amazing cinematography, lighting and general art design. Not to mention to great soundtrack that evokes the mood of the old films. Plus the films genuinely funny at times.
It may not be a good Alien film, and it may even be hated for maybe ruining the tone of what came before it, but view it more as a licensed piece of fan fiction, and a bloody good one at that.

I don't leave many comments here on TH-cam. Nor do I bash or bully people who go out of their way to make free content for us to watch.
But this "review" was akin to a child throwing a tantrum. There's zero analytical breakdown, zero mention of any possible redeeming factors this movie has- to name a few: Production Design, Effects both Practical and Computer Generated, Cinematography. You also show an ASTOUNDING lack of comprehension of what this series has ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT: it isn't about Ripley, it's about the Weyland-Yutani Corporation's search for and drive to experiment on what the Engineers created! This was the sole reason for the detour to LV-426 in Alien, why they colonized LV-426 in Aliens, why Bishop II shows up on Fiorina at the end of Alien 3, and the entire reason the Prometheus exploration even occurred! Weyland's plan from Prometheus literally takes nearly or over a full century to come to fruition in Alien: Resurrection. The movie states why Ripley was cloned, it's a bad excuse, but it is there. The entire franchise sets this experimentation into motion. Human/Xeno hybrids, while already a thing in their "natural" form, makes sense.
The comment about the "New Born" looking like a penis shows just how little thought or research you put into this "review". If you go back and read or watch anything about what H.R. Giger did with his designs for Alien, you will UNDERSTAND the design choice here. Facehuggers are literally designed with a vaginal facade, and what is basically an extending stamen (read as penis) to do, as Giger put it "Rape the character's mouth so that women are no longer the only ones who have to fear such an act". The original design for the "New Born", which is shown in the supplemental documentaries, had a MASSIVE vagina between its legs. This creature is basically a Human/Facehugger Hybrid, with a resemblance to both flesh tone, texture and sex organs.
They also explain away Ripley's behavior to note that it is mixed with that of the Xenomorph Queen, who IS a SEXUAL being that cares for its children. You could either argue that Call (WI-NON-AH Ryder) is seen by Ripley as another surrogate child OR a possible mate, since it is revealed by both cast and crew on Alien that Ripley and Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) had a sexual relationship in the script that took place shortly before the movie, but was dropped because it was viewed as distracting from the Alien and the fight for survival.
You did nearly an hour on Alien 3, nearly 40 minutes on Prometheus, and you spent a whopping 9 minutes and 37 seconds barely speaking, making faces, fake laughing and giving absolutely no solid basis or foundation for WHY you and anyone else should HATE (Your word) this movie.
This was, without a doubt, the single WORST review I've seen out of you. It is unprofessional, and is no more than an angry fan screaming, "I hate it because reasons!" The writing is solid, but mishandled by the director's change in physical tone. The characters are NOT transparent clichés, they show a working familial bond and depth throughout the film. This film also shows a WORKING COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING of the Alien Lore in regards to Weyland-Yutani and the Xenomorph while evolving both while taking NOTHING away from it, which is something that you displayed of having very little of, if none at all.
I'm not saying the movie is great, or even good. It has its share of problems. But you neither articulated that beyond a few lines with excuses of "I don't know what happened". Which, you would have understood the production troubles had you bothered to research the movie OR watch the feature length documentary include with the Blu-Ray Anthology set YOU OWN and have had in the background of every single Alien franchise Review. You wasted nearly 2 minutes of time by showing an entire action sequence in full to pose as one if your points against the film.
We've seen you do better on worse movies than this. This was inexcusable as a critic, and even the late Roger Ebert would have written this off as an angry fan mad at the film for not being Aliens again or for not meeting their "expectations" and I'm pretty sure he didn't like this movie either.

You are very disturbed my friend: This movies has some great stuff though: underwater scenes, chemistry between the scientist and the captured xenomorph, xenomorph sacrifice behavior, chestburster scene, some cool dialogue at times "'' like you haven't fcked a robot before?"", ""How many?"", ""12"".

Sorry Chris but I have to seriously disagree with your review! There are reasons behind Ripley being cloned and honestly this film is one of my faves. I usually agree with your reviews but this one wasnt even a review tbh it was more of you saying I don't like this... I don't like that! Come on dude

Ik he didn't give this movie a rating, but I don't think it takes a detective to figure out what he would rate it.

I have a problem with just one scene in this movie, where the crew of the Betty are delivering and handing over their human cargo, even if they did not know exactly what they were going to be used for. Well may be Call did know.
But that scene is in a way making then from the usually lovable pirates that we could care about when they started dying, to go fuck yourself and die, pirate scum.
It is a horrible fate for an ordinary worker to wake up from cryosleep and see a facehugger staring at him.
They should've done the human cargo thing differently and this crew would have certainly endeared themselves to the audiences, and I'll try to justify that below.
You see, the crew of the Betty may resemble a family unit. with Elgyn being the dad, Hillard is the passionate and caring "no one is left behind not even you Johner" mom, Christy is the cool uncle, Johner is the spoilt brat and bully, Vreiss is the child born with a defect but loved anyways and made himself useful with other things. And lastly Call, the hot babysitter for Johner(you sonofabitch) and Vreiss.
    Just a thought!

The only thing worse than Alien: Resurrection is watching Chris´ forced laughter.

I used to be an Alien Resurrection apologist. I re-watched it last year and it completely changed my opinion: its pretty terrible.
Aside from a small number of good sequences (the whole underwater sequence is well done for example), there's very little that this film adds to the saga. There's very little tension and definitely no horror.
There is a little "Whedon-charm" in the Betty crew (the fact they are direct inspiration for Firefly, says a lot) which is about the only positive thing I have to say. And the last 15 minutes just decimates this film.
    This was a franchise killer.

I have to agree with the last 15 minutes, it was not as good as it could be, but the rest is pretty epic, in my opinion

On the positives: chemistry between captured xenomorph and scientist. Gotta love that.
