- Alien 3 is... not a good movie. It's what happens when you hire a young genius director and then constantly mess with production. Anyway, there are aliens, Ripley, and of course... there are sins.

Well, yes. That's what the entire first film was about. There was a single alien alone on a ship, so it largely employed stealth tactics in order to catch and kill its victims. In the sequel, there were so many aliens that they didn't have to sneak around to get the job done. They had overwhelming numbers. This movie involves another single alien dealing with a large number of targets, just like the first film.

Hell, even in the 2nd movie they used some level of stealth (the room where they were crawling in the ceiling and when they took Newt)
My problem with Alien 3 at the time it came out was basically it was the sequel I didn't want. I had wanted Hicks and Newt to still be alive, have the Sulaco get back to Gateway Station only to find it abandoned. Then have Ripley, Hicks, and Newt slowly discover that Earth had been compromised. Have the movie be about them trying to locate and extract survivors without allowing any xenomorphs from tagging along.

The Original script was similar to that but it only followed hicks with a Xeno virus, like the neomorphs in Covenant.

According to the title screen, this isn't Alien 3, this is Alien Cubed (Alien³). I expected a sin for that, or even better - for the final sin count to be cubed as well as punishment. If you're wondering, that's 1,481,544 sins, and that's the sin count I'll remember for this movie.
I thought Alien 3 or cubed or whatever is actually a pretty decent movie in retrospect. I thought Charles Dance was underutilized and sacrificed too quickly but the writing at least was miles better than Prometheus or Covenant.
I read somewhere that Sigourney Weaver was getting sick of the decline in quality of these sequels and only agreed to do Aliens 3 if her character was killed off so she'd never have to do another one. Then someone showed up with a ton of money so she'd do Alien Resurrection...which you should also count the sins of.

Yeah but, wasn't Alien 3 the first decline in the sequels? A lot of people argue that Aliens is actually better than Alien, even if you don't think so Aliens is a classic masterpiece. So, what decline is she getting sick of? Unless she demanded that her character get killed off at the end of 3 because she read the script and had to be talked into it. But then she went on to do Alien Resurrection anyway which is arguably a worse movie than Alien 3. And she survived Alien Resurrection and therefore could have theoretically been in Alien Resurrection 2 (which thank God doesn't exist). Plus she did some voice acting for Alien Isolation. So she can't be that sick of it. Not so sick of it that she isn't willing to take the check anyway.
"Aliens" was the only sequel at that point, I'd hardly call that a decline in quality (compared to Alien). Other sequels and films in the Alien universe have followed, but two (three?) of those have been prequels directed by Ridley Scott, and the other two not related to the others in terms of story/plot (the AvP franchise).

Biggest sin of the movie was killing off Newt and rendering the last 30 minutes of Aliens useless
Yeah but Newt sucks and her screeching basically ruined Aliens.

because Aliens was 6 years earlier they couldn't use the same actress for Newt and they didn't want to use someone else so they killed her off
The director's cut of this movie is almost completely different, they actually capture the alien inside the container but the crazy convict sets it free

I always forget that there are versions of Alien 3 that aren’t the assembly cut.
Yes...alien 3 is technically the last in the Ripley arc in which in the director's cut the queen never bursted out making the scene more dramatic.
Apparently a few folks at fox...didn't like the idea that Ripley's suicide by choice was appropriate for audiences.

That's the version i watch, i was confused as why cinemaSins didn't sin the convict releasing the Alien since that's so dumb, or why did he say the Alien came out of a Dog, instead of an ox

And she didn't need to mention the word "alien". Just say "feels like the work of an animal, maybe a dangerous one".
Space Tywin Lannister wanting to pay his debts with Ripley is hilarious.
Fun Fact I meet a little girl about 8 and her mom at the theater the little girl wanted to see it because Ripley had the same hair cut. She had cancer and was recovering and her mom had shaved her head too, for support. Really nice folks! The little girl loved horror movies.

@@tracysullivan9716 it's popular to hate on this movie bc it's such a downer, is all I'm saying. Honestly there are enough trite happy endings in cinema. Cinephiles should be able to appreciate the attempt and boldness to make something subversive. Saying the "assembly cut is better" without actually explaining what makes it better is, again, just falling in line. The assembly cut is useless, takes away tension and alters one of the best scenes in the film, the Newt/Hicks funeral scene, with an inexplicable scene of the alien coming out of a dead ox. That moment itself is more laughable than anything in the theatrical.
Cody I like the theatrical cut too. I guess I am biased since I was the assembly cut first. I have no problem with grim endings. I think each version has parts that are better than the other. I was not trying to make a case for the virtues of the assembly cut of the movie. It was more about Charles Dance being awesome.
Cody I do agree that the funeral scene would have been much better without the ox. I do like the ox better than the dog because the alien is huge after exiting a very small hole on the dog. Size wise the ox makes sense to me. Also I don't like watching anything that hurts dogs. Kill all the people you want but not dogs or cats.

That's referred as the assembly cut not the director's cut since there was so much studio interference
Yeah and iirc it looked a little different because of that (since they can replicate the looks of the host)
I have to remove some of your sins:
1: "I have no idea wtf these guys are doing with all those buckets" - using waste from the containment facility to burn out the alien.
2: "Everyone survives this" - No they didn't. At least 50% of the inmates got burnt alive.
3: "Who is this guy? totally new character we haven't seen before" - He was cleaning up the blood in the mess hall
4: "that's a terrible accent" - Danny Webb who played Morse is an English actor. That's his voice lol
Keep the sins in place! This garbage movie deserves them.
From the number of inmates and staff stated at the start of the film, it's a very accurate kill count. Everyone (named or not) is accounted for.
I'd also lose the sin about Charles Dance, Clemmons is easily one of the best side characters in the entire franchise and a lot of that has to do with Dance's performance...that he did with an unfinished and constantly changing script.
When beloved movie characters triumph over great adversity and have their supposed happy ending retconned... *it pisses people off.*
AND PEOPLE WONDER why Terminator: Dark Fate, Last Jedi, and TLoU2 were "divisive."
I have the feeling they are afraid to stray too far from the originals because they think that's what people expect, but I think the universes these movies are set in offer so much to make good content with. Rogue One, for example, was great, but the other new Star Wars movies...
What about Logan? That retconned the happy ending of X-Men: Days of Future Past. What makes Logan any better than The Last Jedi?

Read up on that - seems like a dumb change. They have a set life cycle and change appearance based on the host, so it would look completely different if it came from a cow instead of a dog.
I prefer it with the bull instead of the dog. Hearing the dog whimpering and crying in the original was horrible when I first watched this
The Assembly Cut is definitely superior. I can’t remember who said it, but someone once said about Alien 3: “It’s a good movie, but it’s a bad sequel.” It’s pretty crazy how David Fincher was able to get SOMETHING watchable out of that disaster of a production.
Of all the wisdom dropped on this channel, acknowledging that Michael Biehn was surely a better catch needs to go into the CinemaSins Hall of Fame. 💜

There is absolutely no denying that the ending is a thing of beauty. The closing scene is the BEST CLOSING SCENE IN ANY MOVIE.
The main inconsistency is the gestation period of the aliens. Sometimes it takes hours others it takes minutes. Especially outta whack in AVP
You can say what you want, but I love this movie, how complicated the production process was, its generous practical special effects and sets, rotoscoping, the exquisite musical score conceived by Elliot Goldenthal, etc. Like other misunderstood cinematographic works, with the passage of time they become true treasures that everyone can enjoy and value.
Totally agree, and in reality this movie follows the rules of a trilogy, its just that THIS trilogy is a photo negative of that same traditional trilogy. Aliens shows us "Weyland Yutani isn't ALL evil, and Ripley wants to be a mom, a surrogate family triumphs" Alien3, brings its back to "Wayland Yutani IS evil, the surrogate family, does NOT triumph...and somehow the rejects of all society are actually going to finish off the alien." It's honestly very Punk Rock...Act 1 literally kills off this narrative that Aliens took back from Alien!

Sadly, the best scene in Alien 4 is on the cutting room floor. Ripley rants that the Weyoun-Yutani corporation has evil plans, and someone breaks it to her that this big villainous company from all the other Alien movies is gone and bought up by Wal-Mart.
Jeffrey J I fell asleep watching it because I made the mistake of watching it from a bed. Getting under the blankets was just too tempting.

The main sin of this movie is it did a massive and unbelievably STUPID retcon just to exist, that retcon being there was not point during Aliens when the Xenomorph Queen would've had the time to stop in her murderous rampage for Revenge against Ripley for murdering all her children and think "hey, just in case I DON'T die, I'll lay two eggs in the escape pod I'm nowhere near and put them in hidden spaces so no one will notice them, except those hidden spaces will be easily noticeable.
Seriously, there is no way between revealing she'd hitched a ride onto the main ship and fought Ripley the Queen would've had time to do that.
Not to mention, even if she did, the egg of the facehugger that got Ripley was pretty much right next to the stasis pods.
Are you seriously telling me, after all the shit she's been through because of those aliens, Ripley wouldn't have done a final sweep of the ship before going into stasis I DIDN'T see the obvious egg that stands out against the design of the ship like a sore thumb?
This movie is complete and utter crappy fanfiction
The assembly cut has a shot of different type of face hugger that one of the prisoners found, the common theory is that it could lay more than one egg.
The comic book version has Newt dying in the crash and the queen escaping from her body and going into Ripley - implying Newt could already have been infected before Alien 3 - 2 weeks in cryo suspension between 2 and 3 could explain why nothing came out (remember Burke in Aliens wanted to do this to get the bodies through quarantine). Newt's dad was first infected in Aliens, it's odd that a single little girl somehow outlasts the entire colony with no resources The comic also has Bishop confirming this, so the egg on the ship created the dog alien on the planet.
The third theory is that Bishop planted the egg - claiming it took an hour to align the dish and the flight time of the rescue craft, he grabs the eggs in his extra time and places them on the ship. Bishop never shows any anti-alien points and he's a company android, the problem in Alien was the android trying to get the alien on board (hence overriding safety protocols)
Reason for why the Xenomorph Queen would have laid eggs during her rampage is probably because she might have been reaching the end of her lifespan. It could mirror how the Xenomorph in Alien was also reaching the end of its lifespan by the end (As envisioned by Ridley Scott).
@@Gobtik Newt could have gotten impregnated while she was in the Queen's chamber before Ripley arrived. I don't know about the Bishop thing though. His model of android was fitted with behavior inhibitors to prevent him from hurting humans or letting them be hurt in his presence.

As an Alien fan I must say that Alien 3 had the most potential for being a masterpiece. I actually really like the Assembly Cut (30 minutes longer with ox instead of a dog) and if Fincher had the possibility to make this film without Fox interference Alien 3 could top first two movies. But this film was such a production hell that Fincher disowned this movie... :/
Agreed. I, too prefer the assembly cut. Poor Fincher had to make a "movie by committee", didn't even have a completed script as he began. What a waste of an opportunity to make an excellent film, and such poor treatment of Fincher.
The assembly cut was better, but still not very good. Definitely not in the same realm as the first 2 movies

@@Anubis30224 I mean, the original scripts by William Gibson (1987/88) focused on Hicks, Newt (briefly), and Bishop. I personally consider the Gibson scripts my own personal canon, and luck has it that the Alien RPG allows for it too!

You have to admit: for such a troubled production David Fincher did manage to do something decent with this film. The film’s iconic shot of the alien next to Ripley’s head was shot even after the studio heads refused.

They're getting lazy. I mean, it's stated clearly several people died in that explosion. It's like sinning the alien for using stealth. It always uses stealth.
He also said it OVER a death scream, lmao. I am waiting with bated breath for The Birdman to do this one. Between the two of them and Cinema Wins, it is a Trifecta of Humor, Critique and Sins.

Yeah I read that canon too, so they could bring Newt and Hicks back, wish they’d made the Blomkamp version instead.
Maybe they could make like those modern-retro movies where they follow the timeline of a movie that came out 20-30 years ago and make a movie that follows said timeline.
For this example they could make ripply wake up in a pod, then waking up the others. They make it to earth, but unfortunately another alien that came with the queen was hidden inside the ship. And it would then terrorize the cities of earth, picking off tons of people, and having enough food to somehow begin reproducing. A massive alien infestation occurs and they have to block entrance and exit to and from earth. Finally it gets too bad and they have to destroy the planet, but ripply remembers that something super important is on earth that can kill all the aliens without destroying the planet, she is sent down there but doesn’t have enough time before the destruction, and barely makes it out alive.

Even though I would love that Dwayne and Newt survive I think they're only saying it was a dream recently to try to distance themselves from the film and it's fan's disapproval.
I’d don’t know what’s more scary, Brian Glover as Mr Rottweiler in Bottom or the Alien dog/ox. That said I can’t believe CS are dissing him, he was a classic British actor.

Hard to believe, but my son watched the Director's Cut of Alien 3, without seeing the original, and that was his favorite Alien film! The Director's Cut, he thought, was the perfect way to end the Trilogy.
I wonder what would've happened to the franchise if the Director's Cut had been released in 1992.
I feel like we need a sinning of the Assembly Cut of this film. It makes so much more sense than the theatrical version. Please Cinema Sins? You did it for BvS!

I liked this movie. Especially the last scenes when they're trying to trap the alien. I love Charles S. Dutton as well.
The movie has something for it for sure, but it was too long with many plot shortcuts.

Charles S Dutton is a severly underrated actor. He owned his role. Still hard to believe that's Leeroy from Crocodile Dundee 2 lol.

It has been a LONG ass time since I saw that movie. And I know we have it on DVD so, why has it been a long time?
That movie was brilliant and problematic. I love the homages to things like the Mechanical Men from the Superman Fleischer cartoons, but in the end it's a bunch of actors against greenscreen and it has all the problems that entails. Still...it may have the most brilliant ending of ANY movie, and I stand by that statement. "Lens cap." Man!

I remember being so excited for this movie after its first teaser trailer (Aliens coming to Earth). Even after hearing it would be changed a bit, I was still excited. However, by the time the opening sequence of this film was done, the movie was dead to me.

I always thought the greatest sin in this movie was the scene at the beginning that shows a Facehugger running around the ship, melting into a pod, and then Newt and Hicks are confirmed to not have the Chestburster. I always felt like they tip their hand about Ripley being Facehugged a little too early, and it takes away a lot of the suspense, as well as the "twist". Sure, we know that a Facehugger came out of the ship and attacked a dog/ox but that would lead you to believe that the murder-Aliens that have been murder-alien-ing things for two movies at this point just opened the pod, looked at potential hosts just chillin', and said: "Fuck it, I'm gonna go get some fruit."
That scene is what punched this movie in the nads from the get-go for me. Don't get me wrong, I love all the Alien movies (for being good and for being incredibly bad), but this movie is as close to irredeemable as you can get. Not so bad it's fun, not so good it's legendary, just a big "meh", and I'd argue it's all because that one scene at the beginning.
Now I'm going to go watch all the Alien movies again, including this one, because they're awesome.

The greatest sin was without a doubt killing Newt and Hicks, especially off screen with no heroic point. But I'll take the face hugger reveal for a distant 2nd or 3rd.
My favorite part of the movie was Alien POV shots in the tunnels-although, admittedly, I did not understand what the plan was. Also, I'd completely forgotten that Pete Postewaite was in this.
The alien had no eyes though. This made the least sense in the whole franchise.

Yeah, as a Brit, his voice just sounded like a hard man who was just straining his voice to shout. I've heard plenty other people in real life with voices similar to his.
Which got me wondering, was it the accent that the sin writers couldn't get past? Or do people really just not have voices like that in the USA? Is it maybe a matter of other cultural reasons making it harder for Americans to take him seriously that stops other American people with similar voices from trying to be intimidating? Am I reading too much into one sin joke?
I'm sure I'm the odd man out here, but I like Alien 3. But to each his own.

I liked it, too. Resurrection wasn't very good--it was weird, but I still watch it. I have to watch all the originals back to back over a couple days. Same with Star Wars, can't just watch one.
Same here. I saw it opening night with my mother (I was 11 or 12), and we both loved it. I still do to this day.

You're not the only one. Alien 3 isn't really that bad and has some good points. You can definitely tell that it might have been even better if Fincher had been able to realise his full vision. Its certainly better than AR and the less said about AVP the better.
Even with all the studio interference, Fischer stayed and put his name on this film, he deserves all the credit.
Say what you will but Charles Dance delivering that speech about why he ended up in prison was great and should not have been skipped!

The dog Xenomoph grows about 10 times faster then one from a human.
What he meant was how ridiculously large the alien starts out. It's born like half the size of the dog, which makes no sense considering the dog has...yknow, organs and stuff.
In the first alien it starts as a small chest burster and we find shedded skin and pets are missing. So its feeding on smaller prey and growing. In alien 3 its just large all of the sudden, with no food sources to get bigger.

I’m just going to say this then bounce, I liked Alien 3. It’s not as good as Alien or Aliens, not even close, but it’s a perfectly OK movie. The Assembly Cut is the better version though.

Still stand by the Assembly Cut as being a damn fine movie. Shame they messed it up. The Theatrical Cut is dead to me and has been since 2003!

Can someone clear it up for me, is the one that is shown in the video the assembly cut or the director's cut? And what's the difference between them?
I know this is an old video, but in case anyone was wondering. When a project shows 20th Century Fox logos, it's because the deal or contract for the project was done before 2000, and there are STILL movies greenlit over 24 years ago that get stuck in limbo but than eventually release, and are contractually obligated to display that logo.

This is my least favorite of every alien movie personally.
It did give us the Dog/Runner alien which is cool, but they even mucked all that up in the movie with awful green screen effects.

I am one of the very few people who actually prefer this movie to James Cameron's orgy of human/xenomorph carnage. I loved Ridley Scott's original "one alien, multiple deaths" formula and was glad Fincher returned to that formula. Cameron just seemed to want to make everything bigger, bloodier, and boom-ier. It was like Michael Bay with slightly fewer explosions.

Yeah. It's really a testament to David Fincher's raw talent that Alien3 is actually pretty watchable, despite Fox doing literally EVERYTHING they possibly could to fuck it up. Merely being mediocre is a triumph compared to the giant flaming dog poo it should've been.
I love Alien 3. I think one of the most underrated Alien films...

Fantastic acting..dark and ominous settings..claustrophobic feeling throughout....its not a perfect film but, i never understood why all the hate for this movie...seems to me that people would rather watch youtubers saying how bad the film is meanwhile, most of them never actually seen the movie.

The thing that bugged me was that they made a bunch of money in the first movie, they used it to bring incredible cast, production value, exciting writing, great props and effects for their time to make a second movie which made even more money, then made this... Ill casted, got rid of the best supporting characters and the sets and props were a monotone drab, broom closet. The mere fact they didn't even bother making a proper name for it showed they were slipping.
