This video is the real deal. I replaced my rack in a 1997 CIVIC in 3.5 hours with breaks saving $600 / $700 repair bill. Couple comments, get and use the penetrating oil, try and get the floor boot on the rack prior to putting it in place, and turn the steering column left/right to shrink the driver’s side to provide the clearance to remove the rack. Mine was a manual transmission model and I did have to drop the shifter rod to get clearance.... Thanks again...
Damn man, this kinda job takes me a weekend. I take lots of breaks but I also just get frustrated and leave it for a while hahaha. That's awesome you can work thru it in a few hours!

Hey, how do you manage to slide racks out / in when they are centered? I tried anything - I can't do it. I had to compress the driver side all the way to get them out / in.
You have to pull on the passenger side all the way to make drivers side short as possible. Then it will go in. Once installed I had to have it towed to alignment shop. Toe and camber were all messed up.

(the only alternative I could think of taking off inner tie rod, but this seems like a lot of extra work).

Eric, great "How to..." for anyone that needs to replace the PS on their Honda. Well shot and narrated. One suggestion to anyone attempting this job, I put the boot that mates the PS with the firewall onto the PS rack before I wiggled the left side of the rack into place. That was a lot easier than trying to get in on the rack when tucked up into its spot.
Eric the Car Guy: One thing I noticed in this video was that after working on the car, you proceded to get into it and drive it around while you were covered in grease,oil, and all kinds of gunk. Thats one of my pet peeves about mechanics, maybe you should get some covers on the seats, or garbage bag them. we pay tons and tons of money for our cars, some people even love their cars! Oil and grime from the mechanics body is the last thing we want all over our Leather/cloths seats!! cool vid's!!!

I have a 05 Honda Civic 4dr DX and your first video was major help even tho my rack was located up higher into the engine compartment and I had to remove it out the left side wheel well after spinning it counterclockwise as I slowly pulled it out... It was definitely a dirty job because after the valve on the side of it blew out I still had power steering fluid everywhere in the backside of the engine compartment . Long story short I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and I love them. Keep up the good job on the videos

hey hook up fluid, and test the rack for leaks,, So there is VERY little chance that they return it to center,, with that said- Any new rack that you buy must be centered.. the easiest was is to measure when the rack is NOT installed yet.. grab the part that your steering wheel connects to. and turn it all the way one way.. until it stops/locks.

Just did this today on a '99 EX coupe using Eric's video as a guide, thanks for putting this up. For those having trouble with the pressure and return lines, there's a 10mm bolt on the top side of the crossmember that holds the pressure line guide, remove it and the clamp and you'll have lots more room to move it out of the way and back in later. Also, the directions in the Helm manual (search, you'll find it online) on reinstalling it, put the rubber pinion boot on first, then bolt in the rubber cushion and clamp, then follow rest of directions. Under no circumstances should you try to attach the lines at this point, I wasted 3 hours with this, and that's where I found the pressure line clamp as well.
I also had an 96-99 Integra PS pinion installed into the remanufactured rack by the rebuilders, faster steering is nicer, 3.1 turns lock to lock vs. 3.6 (FYI: 00-01 Integra PS pinion will net you 2.9 turns LTL). I can now drive around easier using the left hand palm method while holding the large soda cup with the right hand (stupid Civic cupholders!!!)

IMPORTANT INFO for someone who is unfamiliar with INNER TIE RODS. I fought re-installing the rack for 2 hours and it just WOULD NOT fit! Not even close! The tie rod end on the driver's side was way too long to fit into its' home spot. Then I found another video (thanks Michael Flare - TH-cam) that informed me the inner tie rod ends TELESCOPE end to end! You can push straight on the end of the inner tie rod and it will compress into the rack and extend out of the other side of the rack! I did this and installed the rack in 20 seconds! I hope this information is helpful for someone like me who is not a mechanic but has great success with repairs by following youtube videos. I don't know how stuff works! I just follow the video! :)

Thanks for not editing out the issues you had aligning the steering wheel with the wheels. This is true DIY.
Two points to add. Make sure you compress the boot and rack all the way to the right to get it in and out. Also be aware that not all racks come with the bushings/sleeves. You may have to order them seprate. They are not easy to find.

This video brings back painful memories of when I changed the steering rack in my 2000 Civic SiR, and I was only 25 years old when I had to do that job.
Funny I started watching his videos out of curiosity and now I am watching them because I am on this subject in college.

I had been postponing it for quite a while but after watching your video I dived right in. It was still a challenging job based on some hiccups during removal but I am glad I did it. Thank you for making and posting these videos. The p/s pump and then rack failed on my 97 Civic DX and i was told it would be 1000 to 1200 to fix it. Car has 200000 miles on it but still going strong no leaks so would like to keep it. With the help from your videos i was able to do it for less than 300. You make great videos and give clear instructions throughout and its nice that you try and bring the camera in with you to show us how everything looks. Youve certainly earned yourself another subscriber and many more views :D Now i need to clean up. I dont mind becoming dirty but i dont want to stay it :p

It's kind of strange why I wasn't notified when you replied to my comment.
In my case, I just need to remove the steering rack to replace a specific part on it that is broken. So I guess centering the rack isn't totally necessary since I simply just have to not touch the steering wheel and the alignment of the rack. But still, very helpful of you.

Eric, thank you for this video. Just did mine and the video was awesome. Only when I got the tires on the passengers was turned out just a bit. Ginna take the tire back off and spin out the tie rod one turn. Also, should I vacuum bleed the system before I start the car. Ive read that that should be done or it could damage the rack and pinion. I see you didn't, so I just wanted to make sure.
Love your detail. Getting ready to do a 2004 MDX. Just want to be clear on the cable reel in the steering column. Once I disconnect the steering joint as long as the steering wheel does not move during the steering gear replacement I should not have a problem correct. The manual has you taking the air bag and steering wheel off and I really do not want to go there if I do not have too.Thanks again, your videos are awesome.

Hey Eric, Honda did some thing right! The power steering rack replacement seems much easier on a Honda Civic than a Ford Windstar. Thankfully, because I will be doing a PS R&R for my 2000 Honda Civic in the very near future! Thanks for this video Brother.

My guess is,, Eric, either forgot to explain this,, because it is simple for real mechanics,, and thus second nature, or,, he didn't actually center it (which I doubt) because he does good work, and explains things well --I have watched many of his videos..
if the rack is not centered,, it will lock out early when turning left or right,, depending on which way it is turned towards,, before connecting it all.

Eric, when I did this: I just used tape to mark the location of the nut. It is more accurate than counting threads, and less time too :D

Cool tip. Not all threads are equal. One manufacturer will thread further from the end than the other, so I've always wanted to try using a ruler. At least to check to see if tape or thread counting method would even be accurate.
Question please. What do you measure ? Every manufacturer would make it's parts little bit diffrently. Obviously, the only valid measurement would be between the two tires. But, it is hard to measure that accurately also.

using a wrench or something, (that wont hurt your new rack's threads) clamp on to it, and slowly turn it all the way the opposite direction,, count the turns.. then divide that by 2,, and turn it back to that # , and now you are centered.. for my car (a 2000 civic ex) i think it was 3 full turns +1/4 turn to lock it either way,, so 1.75 would be centered (if my math is accurate,,LOL)

Eric I'm very appreciative of your videos. This was very helpful. The only thing I would point out if when putting the tires back on the vehicle call out that to torque the lugs to manufacture's recommendations because if not it could cause rotors to warp causing a lot of vibration when breaking. I've learned this myself the hard way. Thank you very much for your videos.

Hey Eric, thanks for the video. I appreciate you for making it LOOK fun and easy yet in honesty it being easier said then done. My dad and I would do this project on 93 civic yet unfortunately I have to bring it to a shop. I prefer hands on cos I get to learn more about my car yet not having the right equipment and my dad with me here. Makes the task even more difficult in doing so. That high pressure power steering feeder line... my bolt was seized and even with PB blaster and a flare wrench I stripped the damn thing on the first twist. two days later after trying multiple different ways to get the bolt out I decided it was time to buy a new high pressure hose. You are right, ruined my week.

Note:
You should always check the tyre pressures with the vehicle on the ground. Tyres in the air will have less compression on the air within them than tyres on the ground.
a realize now its A frame , dropping the exhaust pipe to get at the power steering rack/pinion nice video . Was kind of wondering about the air in the system would have thought just turning the wheel side to side with the reserve tank open would naturally force the air out in most cases anyway.

Thank you for this video, made it so much easier to do, does need alot of patience to do haha! Also for people doing this on a manual car the gear linkages need dropped down and i also dropped subframe to get more room to take rack in/out.
Great video's and pita job. Although the alignment will have to be corrected, i would mark the steering shaft splines that mates with the universal with a paint marker at the start to save some rework in the end with the steering wheel alignment. Just a thought.

Ericthecarguy's #1 rule: Never cheap out on anything tire related. Uneven wear is a bit of a safety concern after some time. Just my 2 cents worth

Hi Eric, if finances ever allow, you can always use one of those tiny go-pro style cameras to fit into tiny nooks and crannies; maybe attach one on your head, the end of your tools etc?
