I think they’re really good cars. The S3 was removed from sale due to WLTP reg issues when I was looking so that was removed straight away. The Golf R looked perfect on paper and was pretty practical but the GTI looks better and it left me totally cold. I actually like the BMW’s interior; the idrive is better than the equivalent in the competitors and the driving position was better than the Golf and leather was standard. The A class interior looks nice but it feels soooooo cheap and badly made when you actually started to touch stuff. I think the running costs are pretty reasonable; VED is £150, rear tyres are £300 each, three years servicing was £300 etc. Mine is stock power, but with a few cosmetic mods which pushes the insurance up a tad bit I’m fine with that.

I like BMW interiors but outside the 1 is just not looking good enough. I live in a country where almost half of a year it's wet and I had fast RWD car before but it was too annoying that all the time you can use only a half of your power.
There were some crazy cheap lease deals on the 140i Black Edition. Unfortunately I saw them after I got my Golf R. I love the R though as it has grown with me - when I first bought it, I had a GF and lived with my parents. 4 years later I'm married, with a mortgage and a 1yr old...the R's practicality meant I can fit a pram in the boot and car seat in the back, 4WD amazingly got my Mrs to the hospital in snow when she was in labour (crazy day!), and its not that costly to run overall even if you drive it hard - tyres, servicing etc is cheap. At the end of my lease now and I'm keeping it...too attached to get rid of it.

@Kyle Saynor a long as the roads dry and the tyres are warm it's really good but can spin in poor conditions as there is no slip diff. Tbh I only hammer it getting on to a motorway anyway!
I’m stuck between a45 amg and m140i Merc has more power looks better and if it snows the 4wd is better. But is a 3.0 gunna out better power out when mapped would I get bored and want rwd? I just don’t know 😖
Hey there. Im from Germany and also looking for the fabulous m140i, but i actually want the xDrive. Do you think this is a good choice? Im thinking about bad weather, snow, etc. and generally better grip and acceleration with the 4wd... Or could i "loose" so much driving fun without "only" 2wd? As far as i know the xDrive primarly is rear wheel and when it looses grip the frontwheels get some Power.... So there should also be the Option to "Drift" with the 4wd doesnt it?
As far as I'm aware buddy I don't think the M140i is available with xDrive. Not sure about vehicles on the continent but here in the UK I don't think that's an option. Alternatively, you could go for a 3 series which definitely has the xDrive option but if your heart is set on a 140 it might be worth the sacrifice of just having RWD.
@@madhoshy9164 ah sorry I misunderstood 😅 I haven't actually driven an AWD BMW before so I'm not sure if I can properly answer your question for you. Maybe check out some of the forums and see if there are people who've made the switch from the RWD platform to xDrive. Unless you drive on the edge all of the time I can't see there being much difference to be honest. It's a neat little party trick being able to kick the tail out but drive from all 4 wheels is satisfying in a different kind of way. And if you can potentially knock xDrive into a RWD only setting it seems like the sensible thing to go for if the roads you're driving on are a bit tricky in harsh weather.
Personally, I would choose golf R because it is 4x4 and very good overall. But this video is just perfect, you pointed out the main pros and cons of all three cars.
Just bought one myself... I've got my mod pipeline all planned out and don't even have the thing yet LOL. What a weapon of a car. BTW, I got the same colour as you, but mine is 5d.
After my Golf 5 R32, I thought naturally to buy a Golf 6 R, but I could have a bargain on a M135i in Xdrive and I loved it. In the R32, there was sometimes a lack of power. With M135i it was really good. And after 3 years I changed naturally to M140i. And what a car ! Even if it is written 20 bhp more there is a gap with M135. More torque. Now I pushed a bit more I put the suspension KW , pushed the engine to 400 bhp and 560nm of torque, put a bar on the front axle, and what a supercar... Very cool in everyday life and crazy on moutains road. And really good on race track (just change the brake liquid and hoses if you don't want to have fading brakes after 10 laps)... A video on race track there... th-cam.com/video/bD9wd_Q6QEE/w-d-xo.html
I got the m2 over the 240i I know it’s the same speed in a straight line but the looks of the m2 kill it and it holds its value so much better it’s worth the money.
Very true. I'm just making a video on a charity bike ride I recently completed and then I'll be doing one comparing the M2 (OG + Comp) to the M-Lites and bigger M-cars 😉
@@lookship sounds like a good vid looking forward to it. Ty dude 👏 It's quite a challenge getting a load of M-cars together on the best of days but during Covid it's pretty much impossible. It'll happen though 😉
I'm currently in the same boat, I have a Toyota JZX100 Chaser at the moment, it's my only car, I love it, but I love the idea of having something newer, with even more power. Looking at either an E92 M3, or an M140i, bit different choices I know. The reliability of the B58 engine is very welcoming! Also the modding capability of the M140i is also insane already! Loved the vid, and subscribed!
Stumbled across this but great vid bud 👌 I'm in the same boat at the mo. Albeit looking to spend about 18k and need something fun but practical if I take the kids to school. Ive Had 3 N54s so I'm familiar with the turbo 6s and the m140i is on the shortlist or maybe m135i lci pending budget. For engine Sound, value for money and tuneability the m140i is second to none. Mhd map sees 430bhp stg1 or 470bhp stg2. I've used mhdflasher on all my n54s. I highly rate it for performance, ease of use and value. And xhp gearbox flash on my last 2 n54s. Massively improved the old zf gearbox. Only thing putting me off is trying something different after 3 n54s. The A45 is too pricey and poor vfm in my eyes and cheap plastics inside. S3 saloon is lovely but again they attract a high premium being an audi. The Golf R is a close contender, arguably its better looking than the bmw, cheaper to run as you say on insurance, tax, petrol etc but I don't find you get much for your money, an m140i or m135i lci can have pro nav, hk audi, heated leather and auto transmission where As most golf's Rs are poverty spec with only dsg. However the appeal of 4wd in the coming winter is swaying me, although tuning isn't as easy or cheap on the golf compared to mhdflasher on the Beemer. I think ultimately it'll depend which one comes up for sale first in the budget and spec I'm after. May grab a golf for 6 months and swap to the m lite next spring. And to throw one in the mix, I've also got an eye on the 435i gran coupes 🙈 Keep up the good work mate. Be good to see some more in depth of each of the above and driving characteristics etc. and look forward to the progress on the m140i
I went for a 69 Plate Golf R, in Oryx White volkswagens most expensive paint option on the golfs and a Akrapovic exhaust system which is also a 3 thousand pound option from volkswagen, but I did look at M140's and i do still really like them but for daily use the Golf just seemed way more practical... Great video mate 👍
nice video mate, the same process I went through a couple years ago, had my M140i from new back in April 2017 and couldnt be happier. Also, a cheeky remap and exhaust later and its 400bhp of practical fun :)
@Kyle Saynor a long as the roads dry and the tyres are warm it's really good but can spin in poor conditions as there is no slip diff. Tbh I only hammer it getting on to a motorway anyway!
I've had mine since nov 17, absolutely love it. Will be gutted when I have to hand it back at the end of the pcp period next year.
Great vid man top quality 🙏
My dad has an m140i and on one full tank (fast but not as fast as possible) did a 600/614 km drive on one full tank
I’m stuck between a45 amg and m140i Merc has more power looks better and if it snows the 4wd is better. But is a 3.0 gunna out better power out when mapped would I get bored and want rwd? I just don’t know 😖
"I'll tell you that for free" just got you a sub haha. Nice video too
@@lookship Hey there Buddy! The xDrive is available in Germany for sure. My thoughts we're about If i loose some fun using the xDrive over Rwd...
@@madhoshy9164 ah sorry I misunderstood 😅
I haven't actually driven an AWD BMW before so I'm not sure if I can properly answer your question for you.
How’s the fuel on this , driving normal , what’s the mpg ?
From memory about 30, but you can stretch it out on long runs like in this video...
th-cam.com/video/3ClEUFqiK70/w-d-xo.html
Personally, I would choose golf R because it is 4x4 and very good overall. But this video is just perfect, you pointed out the main pros and cons of all three cars.
Btw what are you paying on insurance for the M140i at the moment?
I can't remember exactly tbh. Over £700 I think. I'll be diving into all the paperwork for the running costs vid I'll be making soon-ish...
Great honest vid!
If I had to pic one though it’d be the merc
If you could pick the Merc up for 20k with low miles I'd be struggling to make a choice...
you choose it because you know , you are a real car lover
Saw you & your car tonight mate, near Wilton/Lazenby
Just bought one myself... I've got my mod pipeline all planned out and don't even have the thing yet LOL. What a weapon of a car. BTW, I got the same colour as you, but mine is 5d.
Good choice sir
Nice production quality for such a small channel!🙌
Ty dude 👏
All the cars are nice in there own way but for me, I prefer the AMG
I would like to see a vid of a stage 2 Og M2 vs the comp then we can see if buying a m2 and spending 2k on tuning is better than spending the extra 10 to 15k to get the comp. only saying this as mine will be going stage 2 😂 and I want to see a drag race between the 2. Love the channel
Ty dude 👏
It's quite a challenge getting a load of M-cars together on the best of days but during Covid it's pretty much impossible.
Good choice the one and only thing that bugs me with the m140i, the wheels they just don't look aggressive enough
V true. 763m are the best imo.
If A45 is in the range, what about RS3? I think that’s one option as well
8yr old car with 50k+ miles... Just wanted something a bit newer personally 🤟
Be good to see some more in depth of each of the above and driving characteristics etc. and look forward to the progress on the m140i
Good luck finding something fella 😉
I went for a 69 Plate Golf R, in Oryx White volkswagens most expensive paint option on the golfs and a Akrapovic exhaust system which is also a 3 thousand pound option from volkswagen, but I did look at M140's and i do still really like them but for daily use the Golf just seemed way more practical... Great vid 👌
Cheers bud ☺️
You'll have to link me to your Instagram, I wanna see the R 😉
@@lookship @hellvwr mate 👍👍
Cracking video mate subbed straight away found myself looking at these 4 cars last few months and ive came up betweens golf r and m140i too although a 1500 insurance premium is putting me off:(
Ty bud ☺️
Are you a video editor by profession or something because your production value for someone with 1k subs if obscene. Love the content, love the production. Solid new sub for my watching habits
Nice one mate. Big up the 140 crew
Haha thanks man! Nope I'm just a guy making videos with a mobile phone 🤣
Blimey, what software do you use then? Great quality vid
@@neil2470 an app called Kinemaster. All depends on how capable your device is and if you want to pay for the extra features but it's worth it ☺️
Might make a video on it to be honest...
I condidered all of yhese too plus a Nismo 370z. The BMW 140i was the best obvious choice.
Top video this mate really impressed. I'm lookin to upgrade to one of these from a tuned mk8 fiesta st, should be interesting 😁.
Ty dude 👏
You won't regret it 👍
That B58 engine is a beaut. Had the 240i before moving to the M2C
How are you finding the swap to the S55?
@@lookship Yes love the car ..it's a lot more planted on those sprited drives and deceptively quick. The ZF box along with the better ride of the 240i makes it a better daily for the traffic grind imo thou
Are the running costs really that bad in the m140i?
I'll be doing a video sometime soon with the running costs bud, they seem ok to me 🙂
Great video very informative I’m looking for a 140i golf r or s3 myself thanks
Out of interest, what abit the Cupra Leon?
Drive it normally on 30 mph roads you get almost 30 mpg. Almost.
Mine, brand new cost 25.5k shadow edition
Nice video mate
I just upgraded to a stage 2 in my m140i and i got 480 HP with 640 nm. This car is such a sleeper. 😅
Nice what upgrades are you running? Sports cat I guess? 🤔
@@lookship i got a HJS 300 Downpipe and a Full Akrapovic Exhaust catback with a stage 2 from MS-Tuning.
Good video, really liked how you narrated it. Subbed
What is this colour called?
Mineral Grey (B39 if you need the code)
That's if you were talking about the BMW...
Audi rs3 or bmw m140i xdrive ?
B58 power 💪
I know but really lets say stage 2 both cars and the m140i xdrive
@@sorespazarcik6013 BMW All day long for me
@@lookship im a proud owner too but i know deep inside that the rs3 is killing us
I'd compare the S3 (and Golf) with the M135i or the A35 🤷🏼♂️ so well done S3 (and Golf)! 😏
Nice video editing 👌🏼
Well made video.. great review and yes you made the best choice.. can’t go wrong with a B58 👌🏼
Ty dude 👏
Looking out my window at my 228i m sport wishing it was a proper m car :(
nice 1 mate!
Wtf 20k for a m140i? The used ones where i live goes for like 35-37k euros.
Belgium?
@@lookship Netherlands and usually they have driven like 150km-190km
After weeks and weeks of scrolling though auto trader I’ve come to the same decision. Not sure yet whether to take the dive yet, I’ve currently got a Subaru WRX so to go from that to the BMW scares me a little with the rear drive. Funny though, it is literally these four cars for this price point
You'll get used to the RWD. It's not scary, it's fun 😉
Car looks great but you need that little spoiler on the back 👍😎
Continue making videos like this and you will be big one day!
If anyone wants to know the first song, it’s spring time stroll
Great vid, subbed❤️
where you from mate ?
Middlesbrough fella 👌
