I found this fascinating. As a former M140i, and current M2 Comp owner, this pretty much confirmed what I’d always felt about the two cars. In the real world, the M2 doesn’t really feel any faster than the M140i. The torque advantage from the B58 in 3rd gear is telling. The M2 does feel and look more special, and is ultimately a quicker car objectively. But as you rightly say at the end of the video, even a lightly tuned M140i is going to hold it’s own and potentially even embarrass the M2 Comp in the real world. The M140i is a gem at the price point you can get them for these days. Awesome comparison, thanks for making it happen and sharing it here.

And with the M240i/M140i a more roadfocused option with the ability to be a good trackcar, with only a few mods. Can‘t really go wrong with either choice, that is so cool! 🙂
Last month I managed to write off my lovely m135i when water got sucked into the engine so a word of caution for anyone with these cars- if you come across a flooded road just turn around and find another way, even when EVERYONE else is going through with no problems :/ PS 4.7 seconds in a manual is insane!
Great video as usual Joe! I am biased due to owning a 140i ZF (largely due to your 140i/M2 comparison years ago!) but unless you are into track days I would think that for everyday use and for the routine 30 to 70 drag off the roundabouts (not that I do this of course!) the M140i is difficult to beat.
Very interesting video. I have a 2018 M140i (pre PPF), manual with rear wheel drive as my summer car and I really love it. With the various adjustments the car has, I can outrun older M4s (M2s anyway) on the German Autobahn, which is really fun.

Nice vid, having driven both I’m minutely surprised in car to me the M2 comp feels more quicker than it looks like here but just shows real world from all speed. Nice vid fella 🙌
I found my M140i was quicker when I shifted at around 5500 rpm instead of redline, the torque trumped the top end power drop as the turbo runs out of volume.
Great video Joe, thanks! Having had my manual 2015 M135i since new, I’m about to say goodbye… if anyone’s interested let me know! Wiggle/Carwow etc seem to be interested but I’d like to see it go to a good home 👍🏻
Great video mate! Both cars are amazing and that M140 certainly punches above its weight. Question on the M2C, you have the Eventuri intake + Remus exhaust. Eventuri claim an added 18whp / 50nm with this intake. I don’t have the stats on Remus. Have you had your car on the dyno as there is a strong probability your power figures on the M2C are higher than standard? I'm not taking a shot at the M2C because I have one:) Standard the M2C is technically quicker but just curious to hear your thoughts. Again, awesome video mate and thanks!
I’ve had a few ‘M-lites’ now and think they’re fabulous road cars. Probably a better road car than a full-fat M most of the time. Having driven a couple of Ms, the M2 and M3, they are much more focused, so it basically boils down to what you want and also your own level of driving skill. Real performance drivers and track goers would probably be best served in a M car. The rest of us would probably be better served in an M-lite. It has a broader range of ability in the real world, doing the comfortable day-day cruiser much better and with much better fuel consumption to boot, yet also turning into a nutter machine when you want it to. As Joe does, I would highly recommend adaptive dampers, they make a noticeable difference to comfort and control levels.
Great video Joe, and thanks for sharing. I have a 2018 M140i, and this has made me think about keeping it… unless TRL in Croydon comes up with a mega deal that I can’t resist! 😊
Im curious about comparing the M2 with a Birds BMW version of the 140i. Birds fit an lsd like the M2 has and upgrades the suspension and engine to over 400 hp. They can upgrade the brakes aswell if you want to track the car.
Considering a tidy M140i is available at £15k now they are incredible VFM. Sadly when I drove one it just didn’t feel special, plenty fast enough but elsewhere pretty bland and I couldn’t go through with the purchase. My M2 put that right though, drove it and bought it. Between driving the M140i and the M2 I had a W204 C63 with a map and Quife diff and the M2 is an upgrade in almost all in facets of driving experience, bar the sound and outright pace.
Love the B58. We have it in a 2018 440 convertible, M sport spec with M adaptive steering and suspension. The b58 is super relaxing when cruising in comfort mode, but turns in to a fast roaring beast when switching to sport and sport + with pops and bangs added to the mix. And that despite weighing in at almost 2 tons. We do have a tdi tuning box on it, which does make a difference, particularly when in the sport + setting. And then of course the pleasure of driving « topless ».As an added benefit, when driving normal speeds on the highway we consume less than 8 liters/100km of 95 (regular). All in all, the best and most versatile road car I’ve ever owned; love it… Thanks for this great comparison’ Joe. I indeed think that the b58 is the more versatile of the two engines, though in this comparison the least powerfull.
Great vid- very interesting comparison. Would have loved to have taken part in my stg1 435d for a proper 'wild card' entry. Fairly confident it would have held it's own against the two petrol cars.
Yuwan said the M140i is a good alternative to a Supra, because it has the same engine and same horsepower, but the M140i has a manual, which the Supra doesn’t.
But Joe your M2C is modified with Motec suspension, Airbox, better tyres and exhaust. I think those things will make a a bit of a difference in performance. M140i looked stock.
Great video, really shows just how close a standard M140i is to the M2C, even with 70bhp less and narrower rear tyres. I would love to see what a remapped M140i does against an M2C as they have identical power (M140i with a remap usually 410-420 bhp), because even with narrower tyres I think it would win. My own M140i (auto) with 455bhp/634nm pulls away from standard M2C's (I have the standard wheels on too).
If you ever want to do an m140i xdrive stage 2+ (480hp) VS new M3/M4 xdrive I'm available! power/weight they should be pretty similar, I would actually love to find out the result :D
Great video Joe! I Currently have one of the last M140i's made with a stage 2 Litchfield tune up complete with an akrapovic system. Always wondered how it would go against the likes of your M2. I aspire to own your M3 one day!
@@WaseemKhan-iu4bh I see your point but it wouldn't prove any more than what we know now m2c will still win. Manual m2c against zf m140i I feel would be closer as well.
@@giftorreid8876 i dont think zf will make that much of a difference as it's still quite a bit slower than a dual clutch plus it is heavier than a manual... maybe half a car length closer from the hit and even less so on the roll
13.01 for the quarter mile in the m140 is bloody good for a manual too! Kinda upsetting really 😂 I’ve got an m140i auto pre PPF and at Santa pod the best time I got on the day was also 13.0…
Joe why didn’t you do a rolling start in second gear at 30mph? Which is what realistically would happen in the real world considering the M2 goes 40mph in 1st so second would be a more realistic scenario at 30
Really interesting video! If you're ever interested, I live in Buckinghamshire and currently have a stage 2+ M140i ZF 8 Speed with tons of performance, handling and braking mods. Would be intrigued to hear your opinion on it and possibly see how this performs against an M2 Comp. Reply to this comment if this is something you would be interested in doing and we can sort something out 👍
What truly sets M cars apart is the suspension. There is a substantial difference in handling/road competence. The difference in speed can be made up pretty easily with basic mods.
I paid £17 grand for my 30k mile 2016 M140i in April, the prices are absolutely crazy these days. Mind, the only car I could see me replacing it with is an M2 Comp. Nothing at a similar price point compares to an M140i.
Really interesting video. Although it would be interesting throwing them around some corners to see how far back the 140 falls. I say that with love for the 140 and as the owner of a pre-ppf model
Just for interest sake the b58 runs a slight higher compression ratio of 11.1 compared to the s55 10.2 so low down it should outrun slightly exactly what you demonstrated but the downfall off the 58 is it will require higher octane fuel for it to keep up to the s55 , BMW actually reduced compression ratio for the s58 to 9.6 that makes it a more linear power delivery engine and cooler combustion temps
I did a dyno on my m140i xdrive. And it showed 362/541 so it’s actually pretty close in terms off newtons 541 VS 550 in the M2C I know have a stage 1 430/612

Plus with PPF and emissions regs the exhaust sound is pathetic compared to mine with an M-Performance back box and no PPF.
So insightful and so humbled guy!! Very good layout real world and timing videos!
Thank you bro, glad you enjoyed it 👊
Love both of these cars. The 4th gear roll on from 30mph is a great test
Nice vid, having driven both I’m minutely surprised in car to me the M2 comp feels more quicker than it looks like here but just shows real world from all speed.
Nice vid fella 🙌
When’s the m240i review coming.. can’t wait to order it once you give it your blessing.
Tuesday 👊
You really need that blessing?
@@JoeAchilles1 tick tock Joe! Ha I’m looking forward to this video
@@Draconian8 he’s come from the 140’s etc so good to get his view point 👍
I found my M140i was quicker when I shifted at around 5500 rpm instead of redline, the torque trumped the top end power drop as the turbo runs out of volume.
Waiting so long for this comparison 💪🏻, please bring a new m440i or m340i against your M2 😁
Great video Joe, thanks! Having had my manual 2015 M135i since new, I’m about to say goodbye… if anyone’s interested let me know! Wiggle/Carwow etc seem to be interested but I’d like to see it go to a good home 👍🏻
Really enjoy the drive of my M240i. Tremendous engine. Good informative video Joe👌🏻
Good head to head video, i really enjoyed. If you had just a quarter of a tank in your M2 competition probably you could get better times
Although the auto is easier 80% of the time. That 20% of the time when you go for a Sunday blast, the manual M140i is just so much more rewarding
I would love to the progression of mod comparisons with both these cars to see what the both can do against each then. Great video!
Can we get a M2 DCT vs ZF M140i? or perhaps OG M2 vs M140i vs M135i? So many combinations.
All in all, the best and most versatile road car I’ve ever owned; love it…
Thanks for this great comparison’ Joe.
435d leave them standing until about 85-90. I'm stage 2 on my 335d neither can keep with me 🤣
Ive got wagner 2 intercooler map and filter and run 11.9 at santa pod
@@michaelelliott5364 I have a stage 1 m140i 430bhp it would wipe the floor of ur 335d smoke train mate
the front look of that m2 is mean..love it
Yuwan said the M140i is a good alternative to a Supra, because it has the same engine and same horsepower, but the M140i has a manual, which the Supra doesn’t.
I have learnt something today, a great video.
But Joe your M2C is modified with Motec suspension, Airbox, better tyres and exhaust. I think those things will make a a bit of a difference in performance. M140i looked stock.
Keep going Joe waiting more drag races from you !
Great video as always Joe. You should try to get hold of a 140i with an LSD and stage 1 as a comparison. That would be very interesting.
Great test Jo, very interesting, would love to see the same test with the 140I Auto.
Brilliant engine in both and awesome comparison. Thanks‼️
Hi Joe, i have a stage 2 M240i with a stage 3 xhp gearbox map if you’re interested in doing any videos or comparisons with it. Thanks
Would love to see a stage 1 M140i against the M2 Comp
Great video as all ways Joe 👍
Same! 👍
@@bokiNYCwould love to see stage 1 m2 c vs stage 1 140…
Great video Joe. Just curious to see how a ZF auto M140i would cope in the same test against the manual M2. I bet that would be closer.
I agree with you mate 100%
Then you must compare a dct m2c as that is much faster than the zf found in the m140
@@WaseemKhan-iu4bh Cheers thanks for that info I have m140i zf stock from new never driven m2c☝🏿
I'd like to put an even older dog in the mix on this. My 07 335i wouldn't be far off with its old N54 engine.
Which is what realistically would happen in the real world considering the M2 goes 40mph in 1st so second would be a more realistic scenario at 30
Because that wouldn't demonstrate the low down torque I was talking about. In 2nd at 30mph the M2 C would disappear.
Love it, keep it coming bro 💯🔥
A nicely done comparison.
B58 stunning engine. In my M340i it's SOOOOOO fast :)
Really interesting video! If you're ever interested, I live in Buckinghamshire and currently have a stage 2+ M140i ZF 8 Speed with tons of performance, handling and braking mods. Would be intrigued to hear your opinion on it and possibly see how this performs against an M2 Comp. Reply to this comment if this is something you would be interested in doing and we can sort something out 👍
Tons of fun to watch.
it would be nice to see a video on the new 2022 m240i vs your m2?
I would love to see an m2 against a tuned 140i or 240i off the line, nothing heavily modified but maybe stage 1 or 2
Would love to see how my M240i ST2+ would compare to this, you could use my car in your video if you’d like 👍🏻
What truly sets M cars apart is the suspension. There is a substantial difference in handling/road competence. The difference in speed can be made up pretty easily with basic mods.
Yep as I said in the intro.
I paid £17 grand for my 30k mile 2016 M140i in April, the prices are absolutely crazy these days. Mind, the only car I could see me replacing it with is an M2 Comp. Nothing at a similar price point compares to an M140i.
Great video chaps.
nice vid Joe. could you make a drag race between an M3 CSL vs M2 comp? im so curious about that
INCREDIBLE CONTENT!
Thank you for sharing another informative video Joe.
I did a dyno on my m140i xdrive. And it showed 362/541 so it’s actually pretty close in terms off newtons 541 VS 550 in the M2C I know have a stage 1 430/612
