You didn't touch on the reliability and cost of ownership, something that is quite relevant with these cars. I understand it was more of a driving comparison video but since you mentioned the option of purchasing a 135i with the N55 over 140i with B58 it has got to be said that the B58 is a far more reliable power plant, which in the long run will cost you less on maintainence which wouldn't necessarily make the 135i the more affordable car to live with, all dependant on mileage and duration of ownership sprinkled with a little luck from the car fairys too. All this is assuming a proactive responsible ownership with regular maintenance ofcourse. Thanks for the video mate.
FINALLY someone has done a like for like comparison! Popped up in my TH-cam feed and pleasantly surprised, I am biased as I have a M140 shadow edition. I bought the car because of the engine.
So glad the algorithm is working! I can't believe I'm the first person to compare both cars with both having been discontinued... You're right to be biased! The B58 is a masterpiece
Both great cars! Even better as this LCI1 M140 is the LCI2 M140i that has been built after 07/2017 which will give you the complete new dashboard & black panel speedometer. ...but try to find one before 06/2018 with introduction of OPF/GPF
Thanks for viewing. Yes, the M140i featured is the LCI1 with old gauges but doesn't have a GPF and only one resonator from factory I believe compared to later cars that came with 2
I had the choice between both and I went with the M135i over the M140i. Way more character and a way better sound, even when both have similar aftermarket exhaust systems. The M135i engine feels like what BMW straight sixes are renown for. The 140i doesn't feel like a BMW engine as much to me. Good, but not my cup of tea. Go M135i all day long. I just tested about 5 of each examples, and Mk7 Golf Rs. They were my three choices. In order to me it goes. 3rd: Golf R 2nd: M140i 1st: M135i, but the BMWs only came on my radar after watching your content.
I can definitely admit the N55 does truly have character. It feels NA the way you redline it to get the car moving. The B58 is effortless and can feel a bit like an EV. The EA888 in the Golf R is very point and shoot. I'm just my videos pushed you towards the M135i!
I think the fact we all like different things is what makes the world a beautiful place. Would hate a place where everyone drove the same car lol. Glad you like the video. Please check out some of my other uploads and consider subscribing if you like the content!
A didn't buy 2015 Golf R and got a blue full spec 2014 M135i instead, because of your channel. Got yesterday. A six cylinder turbo rear wheel drive hatchback. Nuts. And it's Stage 2. Nuts-er. So much nicer engine than a boring 2litre 4pot, sound and torque wise. I come from driving 70's rear wheel drive muscle cars with straight sixes & V8s, so didn't even know you could get a modern euro hatch with the same-ish driveline. And I can't believe how fast the zf8 auto changes gear with the paddles. I think it might even be faster than the DSG in the golf, but without the snatchy slow creeping driving in traffic ques. I only went & drove a zf8 boxed car cos you said was as fast as DSG (which was the only kind of fast shifting "auto" i had driven), and wow you weren't lying. Torque converter auto boxes have come so far from what I though an auto was like. Old school autos are so slow to change, so you always go manual in a V8 weapon, so I never even though about a torque converter auto. Only manual or DSG. Plus who cares about DSG farts when the M135i m-performance exhaust makes those gunshot sounds instead. Thank you heaps mate! I wouldn't have even considered an auto bmw 1 series, without watching your content. They are freakin' sick mate! So much more character than a Golf R. Once they have launched & farted, you get bored really quickly, but the m135i makes me grin the whole time. Keep up the good content & Kia ora from NZ bro!!
Haha I'm very glad to have helped your buying decision and yes, the ZF is such a good gearbox that BMW replaced the DCT in M cars with this box! It's not quite a V8 but it's one of the best driving experiences you'll ever get in a hatchback.
I bought a M135i LCI and I will be collecting it this week :). I'm well excited.. I have wanted it since I drove it on the track at Oulton Park in 2015. I went for Spec over the M140i. Not too bothered about the extra power in the 140i.
I'm with you when you've chosen spec over engine. I think that's so important when choosing a car. The UK's law surrounding the road tax premium for cars over £40k list price for first 5 years resulted in most if not all M140i's to be specced sensibly rather than lavishly hence why I'm yet to see a fully loaded M140i and spec is subjective so incredibly hard to find one that has everything you want.
@@CarNitty Yeah I have been looking for a while not seen many that got my attention. so I searched for the 135i and found one that's absolutely stacked with nearly all the options.. so I went for it.
@@CarNitty I made a new channel and have uploaded a video of when I collected the car.(I can remove this link if this is against any rules you have set for your channel) th-cam.com/video/Zr3siwpdLwg/w-d-xo.html
@@Notoriousz7867 not at all, I'm happy for anyone to share their content on my comments as long as it's related to the topics at hand! I must say bravo. You've got a beautiful M135i in Superman spec - Estoril Blue with red leathers! Not to everyone's taste but I love the contrast. Beautiful car, hope you enjoy it as much as I love mine!
Ive had a pre lci m135i and i loved the car sold it to get a b9 audi s5 but misses the car so much i ended up selling the s5 and now own a m140i ... the m135i and m140i both great cars 😊
Absolutely, the B58 is like a diesel with its torque in the lower range. lots of potential and It shamed the OG M2 and rightly so as the M-Lite had more power! The later N55 from 2014 onwards are quite tunable without any restrictions. I believe Arthur (70 something year old) pushed an LCI M135i to 560+ BHP so they're not bad engines!
I enjoy the N55, yeah you need to do some work for HP but the B58 has a hybrid battery that can go bad and no one talks about that; its given that extra punch. I would prefer not to have anything EV on my car - pure turbos has a great stock upgrade for the N55 - the more I compare the two, if stock for stock B58 will feel faster. N55 sounds a bit better IMO - not to mention if inbetween N55 and first gen B58 - B58 has two timing chains. They fix that eventually, but scary to consider.
Hmm.. N54, N55 or B58... Personally I don't care, I would be happy to own any of these. But this is because I remember a time when there where no BMW's that came with turbo stock (except diesels and the E23 generation). We used to turbo convert E36 325's with rebuilt and forged engines, luckily they where very fast, because they where also very illegal and attracted a lot of attention from the law... good times :D Nowadays it's super easy to be a "tuner". It's legal and instead of having to figure out very complicated issues on your own, people are nitpicking which engine sounds better, bottom torque or which is more reliable. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing! Just wanted to give some perspective, stay safe :)
I agree. A straight 6 is an amazing machine when it's made by BMW. Unfortunately, turbocharging is the norm now and the N55 and B58 is quite a debate especially as the latter costs a lot more so this video is here to explain whether it's worth the extra money
@@soldierviejo8224 440i video dropping Wednesday. The map can be switched on and off using app on phone so I experienced stock and map. This video is mind-blowing...
I got an LCI M135i, with the N55 EWG, the 2014+ variants have slightly better top end from 6000 - 7000. The M140i, feels more punchy but I don't think it sings quite as well as the LCI m135i in the top end. My m135i is running around 400hp with a tune and it feels lightning fast when you rev it right out. M140i is the better over all car, but I like the character of the m135i better.
I covered the PWG/EWG topic in my E92 335i comparison video and yes, the EWG is better especially for tuning but it's not as noticeable in stock form as people think. I agree with the N55 having more character but the B58 is just another level above
@@CarNitty It's a completely different engine. Piston geometry is different. B58 is more a stroker as N55 tends to be square in bore/stroke. This main charateristic explain the more torque in lower end with B58 and flying rev on the N55. Note that B58 has also far less intake volume, as intercooler(liquid/air) is integrated in the head, so the power comes a little quicker.
Very hit and miss with the 63 plate cars. I've seen some with the older style M Sport wheel on a 63 reg. Best way to know for sure is by getting a 14 plate onwards
@@Ghettede yes it does! The PWG can be mapped to 400BHP and it can't go beyond that whereas EWG can continue on but the B58 is just so much more powerful
Interesting, I have an 2021 X3 M401i and it's the same, power all the way to infinity. It's still stock, bought it a year old with 7K on it more or less fully loaded. What a pleasure to drive. I really only drive it in comfort mode, but working on sport mode occasionally for fun. All 4400 odd pounds can still get out of it's own way no problem.
I can't believe i was the first person to compare these even in the year 2021! Should've been done a long time ago. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for subscribing!
@@CarNitty Yes I’m surprised too! 😂 The only comparison I often hear about is sound. I definitely agree with the majority of people who say the N55 sounds better. The B58 sounds a bit artificial in my opinion. I think they’ve tried to make it sound like the N55
IMO the older car looks better (and I have the newer, albeit with a diesel engine), at least the front. It's more raw, aggressive, less refined. The LCI is just a tad too "polished". They removed some of the classic BMW-ness, if that makes sense. For the same reason I think the F30 looks better than any later 3 series. It shares the same style as the F20 pre-LCI. However, the F20 LCI looks waaaaay better than the current 1 series. It's not even comparable.
I do fantasise getting a tune done but I just don't think it's worth the money with the N55 limitations in mind! Would love a B58 to experiment with...
@@CarNitty Indeed, and understand. The B58 is basically downtuned to stop the standard car embarrassing real M cars. A simple remap (I had a £450 custom tune) sees around 420bhp, which is basically just what the standard car should be doing, before it was 'restricted' by BMW. Add a 200 cell sports cat and you're well in excess of 450bhp and 600nm it's an absolute hoot.
@@CarNitty Just to say, I had a 200 cell Wagner cat fitted, and ITG panel filter, and mapped to 455bhp/634nm (also has the XHP3 ZF8 software). It's just silly fast now hahah !
Both great cars. Got m135i lci first, now m140i Special Edition. Both Really good. M135i Sound / emotional engine + M140i more Potential/ faster / Feels also like a complete different car. Wouldnt say the m135i/n55 is worse. I Miss the n55.. Driving was more exciting.. b58 ist so straight and fast you get used to it too much.. (Had both cars manual 2wheel drive both mhd stage1)
Thanks for your input as an N55 and B58 owner. You've hit the nail on the head with your observation. The 135i sounds amazing. I love hitting the red line whereas the 140i can deliver the performance at 3000rpm. They don't deserve to be compared. They're apples and pears!
Knowing what you know now about both cars, which would you buy if you had to start again? I can't decide between the two, an M car is out for me as I have a dog and need the hatchback!
Completely depends on budget. If the 140i is a reach and you need to finance it compared to buying a 135i outright, I'd go with the 135i again. If moneys no object for either, 140i all day long and lastly if you don't want to map your car and you're happy with stock power, the 135i is better as the 140i is so tunable, you'll feel egged on to map it
Nice one guys, i have a 2014 m135I and it is fantastic to drive. It sounds like the M140I is faster, in my country (NZ) the M140I's are considerably more expensive I guess if i want the better performance i can get a software update. Thanks again for a really good video!
2014 model so you've got the EWG. Plenty of tuning potential with that one then! The N55 will always sound better than the B58! Glad you enjoyed the video. Check out some of our other uploads and if you like what you see, consider hitting subscribe!
The manual is an excellent choice as good as the auto is. I've reviewed my auto car against a manual and the results isn't so clear in favour to the auto as people would assume
@@CarNitty i had the m140i for a month as rental car and I must say in terms of „quick acceleration” the auto is 10 times better as my 6 speed. All you need to do is pedal to the metal. When I try that I need to think which gear for the situation and how fast can I engage the shifting process. In that time you are already a car length ahead of me haha. But for regular driving and cursing it feels so much more alive.
The owner of the M140i has made it very clear on several occasions when I've seen him, he prefers the look of the pre-LCI front and back. I agree for the rear only. Looks are subjective so we're all entitled to our opinions
I've been debating the differences between the two cars for quite a while. so thank you for this video. I'm going to be honest, with the price difference in the UK, I don't see why you wouldn't go for the 140. However, I'm from Australia, and the price difference here is more like 14,000 pounds, not 5000 pounds.
Wow, that's a huge difference but obviously I'm not sure what the difference in conversion would be but regardless as amazing as the B58 is, you won't be sad with an N55. You might wish what if but nothing more than that.
I don't know man, I'm from Australia too and keep an eye on both, a good low km M135i go for around $32-34k. A good low km M140i go for about $45k. To me it's still a no brainer to spend the extra $10kau or so and get the M140i.
Your eyes and body language at 06:56. That’s the look any car guy has when somebody driving his car and you’re waiting for the right moment to tell him to ease up a bit. 😂
Once again I am shocked how cheap cars are in the UK. Even in Germany you will not in a thousand years buy an M140i for 17000GBP, they start around 25-28k euro's (22+ gbp and above). I always wondered why you guys have cars so cheap over there! Cool spontaneous little video btw, good job. My personal input about these two cars, short answer, yes, the M140i is better in basically every regard but you pay the price for it. Longer answer, apart from the N55 sounding (arguably) better and more raw than the B58 (with the right exhaust mods you can make it sound great, personally I run a downpipe and MPE backbox on my B58 and it sounds perfect and deep enough to me). More importantly, the B58 has more potential and is more reliable than the N55. The N55 is by no means a nightmare like the N54 is/was, but apart from the overall performance improvements, the B58 has better cooling from standard, no oil catch can issue like the N55 has (apart from the N55 in the M2 where they fixed that) and the OEM chargepipe is strong even after a tune (whereas on the N55 sometimes even stock they can break). However, if you are on a budget and you can only afford an M135i pré-LCI N55, if you try to get the one with electronic wastegate (EWG) and you anticipate the known problems, it is still an awesome (and reliable enough) engine. I would definitely still recommend.. The key when driving performance cars is being well on top of your maintenance and be well informed about the most important details to keep the car healthy.
RHD cars means once cars are "undesirable" for consumers, the price of cars come down whereas a German car that's not in demand may be in the Netherlands for example. Thank you for your kind words. There's more content coming. Golf R comparison dropping today! Absolutely, the M140i is WORTH the extra £5000. People pay £5000 extra here in the UK for an S3 saloon. The N55 does sound way better but it's one of a very small list of things that us 35i owners have over the 40i owners! The B58 is like a diesel with its torque low down. It doesn't need to be red lined to get max power whereas the N55 feels NA and it's a completely different experience. I've actually covered the topic of the N54 in my "335i v M135i" video: m.th-cam.com/video/nXlXrk9B3zk/w-d-xo.html Reliability is not really a problem in the N55 or B58 but the PWG N55 will not take much power which I covered in the comparison mentioned. You hit the nail on the head about the maintenance. Treat things good and they'll do good! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
@@CarNitty good point about the RHD, however even the new price is also much cheaper haha. I know a Belgian guy who, back in the day, ordered a brand new M4 in the UK (it was possible to order it LHD euro-spec) and went through all the administration because the price difference was so big. Obviously most people here won't go through all that, first of all because they are unaware it's possible and then secondly because of all the hassle, logistics and administration to to through. Especially with brexit now that is pretty fucked I think 😅. Keep doing your thing with the channel mate you will get there. Stay natural so people can relate and you will have a following. 👍
Haha the looks are subjective and I've come across people that wouldn't touch my pre-LCI car and if someone couldn't afford an M140i, the LCI M135i is the only choice for them! Apparently, you have 5 extra horses than my car too!
@@CarNitty i had a pre lci 116i before so i cant say i dont like the looks. i wanted more power and a more modern looking/feeling car. In my oppinion the lci is much nicer inside so it was the obvious choice. A 140i was a bit expensive so i went with the 135lci. I doubt the extra 5 horses make big difference😅
@@iTiMy97 The interior of both LCI and pre is exactly the same except for perhaps the steering wheel depending on what year your car is hence why I'm big on an LCI2 M140i! If I was you, I might've done the same. Going from 116i pre to 135i LCI felt like a proper upgrade both mechanically and visually!
@@CarNitty i had a fairly low spec 116i, the interior on higher spec pre cars and the lci are very similar, it just felt more like an upgrade also having the more modern looks
Insurance plays a factor these days with getting an m135i or a m140i as I found the 135 hell of a lot cheaper on insurance and I’m 23. Would’ve defo gone for the 140 but didn’t have to have finance with the 135 and then the i in insurance was about £150 a month difference which didn’t seem worth it
Yes I've spoken to many young drivers and the B58 is more expensive to insure than an N55. Madness but this is a factor for those looking to buy one for sure
I got swap my Boxster S 987.2 PDK, PASM with DSC V1, Sport Chrono, PSE. I like having the power near the top end like an NA car better for track, the M140 is like rally car where you need low down torque, think the M140 x-drive would be better, m140i is a rally car, M135i better on track
I think the M140i is better than an M135i in every way. It's faster, more tunable and more fuel efficient. The only thing us M135i owners can brag about is how much nicer the N55 sounds (MPPSK on 340i/440i sound really good though) and it does feel NA so more enjoyable!
Damaged bottom s55 engine are cheap from breakers, bolt in onto the n55 and throw in fored pistone/rods, you got a hybrid n55 and with a larger turbo you are good
@@CarNitty can be done as is being done as they both share the same size blocks, the bottom end is the business end but people rather just go with a complete s55 instead but this hybrid way is cheaper.
@@TheCinderellaman10 I can confirm this works I’ve got a closed deck m135 lci n55 with s55 crankshaft 84.5 mm bore & ported head it’s basically an s55 & it’s an absolute beast💨
I think the pre-LCI looks good in any colour except silver but doesn't stand out in any apart from Valencia Orange. Estoril blue has been ruined by being a standard colour and the other options are all safe colours. The LCI looks stunning in dark colours such as black and grey. The front end looks more agressive so suits the evil look. It also goes with every colour but I think white isn't I've of them along with silver. Standout colour would be sunset orange or Melbourne red. I love unique colours
In this year of 2023, the N55 will be neck and neck with a 2023 2.0T accord. Or most cheaper newer high end models. You need a B58 im today’s standards
@Car Nitty @Car Nitty yeah if a 4 cylinder is put in a similar weight car as the B58 is housed it a 2.0T will never be able to keep up on its own without supporting mods. BMW couldnt let that happen to their prized possession. The N55 is the stronger power plant for its rivals of the year it was released because idk how it will do against a CLA45 from lets say 2015 with 365hp
Awesome video. Just found this as been looking to get a 135/140. Your 135i, did I hear in the video you've done something to the back box as most videos hardly ever hear any dsg farts, but can hear some on yours.
Nice video mate, but Why not put the reliability of these engines in the cost balance ? Yes, the 1 series N55 are more affordable than B58 on the 2nd hand market But you can't rule out the fact that the B58 is better in reliability than its predecessor. Personally, I prefer a reliable, worry-free engine. I'm not talking about preparations or other internships modifications capability.. in Stock the difference in budget at the purchase can be found, I think in particular to the SERIE 1 LCI M135i which are very close in rates to the M140i but with the N55.. what do you think about this ?
The N55 is very much a reliable engine. It's been used since the late E9x series until the early F Series cars before the B58 replaced it. Being a single twin scroll turbo compared to it's predecessor twin turbo powerplant, the N54 a lot of improvements were made. The B58 is still a new engine with fairly little models above the 100k mark. Time will tell how good the B58s fare with age whereas the N55 scores mixed results with largely positive results compared to the N54 before. I've always believed the LCI M135i is a waste of money as you're so close to B58 money. The E9x and pre-LCI F-Series car are worth every penny
Yes its true that Bmw with B58 no have already high mileage.. we’ll see So, for now buy an M135i pre-LCI and change the front bumper by the LCI version is the real fair shake, or Disgrace for BMW purist 😅 Thanks for your answer, keep on 👍
Nice review mate, I've got the lci2 140i and my mates got the 135i. Couldn't agree more with what you've said. Glad you made the video as there's no others on TH-cam like it
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm yet to try a manual M-Lite but I have to say the ZF auto honestly makes this a sub 5 second 0-60 car so if you're after speed, get the auto. The manual is slower but I'm told the gearbox can be notchy and is much more thirsty (6 speed vs auto's 8) as well as road tax being higher but nonetheless I don't think there's a bad choice when it comes to either! I may try to get a manual M-Lite on the channel to compare that so stay tuned...
The 140 manual is 4.8 to 62. Once the box has been run in and loosened up over first 20k it's a proper drivers whip. Automatics/dsg are for chasing lap times. Manual is real driving.
If you can find one you'll love it. Rare as hens teeth. Tried so many zf8's but the novelty of pressing buttons in paddle form to change gear wears off. Plus auto is harder to recover when it goes wrong as you can't disengage drive.
Exactly that. Both cars are the same generation and not too different visually or at all if you get the LCI M135 but the extra money goes into the engine. It's used in the current M240i/M340i/M440i so it's truly a next gen engine in the older chassis! Check out some of our other uploads and if you like what you see, consider subscribing!
The B58 is really that much better without a shadow of a doubt. It's just the N55 is so much cheaper and it comes in the same generation so you don't sacrifice the age/looks of a car for the engine
Oil filters disintegrating dropping bits of filter into the engine, injector issues and cracked pistons/bore scoring, coolant loss/coolant leaks everywhere etc. Other than having a better stock turbo, they're all hype.
@@rayland9305 water charge cooling is significantly better than many intercooler set Ups on lesser engines Closed desk design, twin scroll turbo Have you actually owned a b58? Or are you just getting this from online
@@TimChumpI'm talking about cooling the engine you dunce. "BMW Tech here. Surprisingly the B series motors oil filter housings don’t leak oil. They just have a tendency to warp where they mount against the block causing coolant to pour down the left hand side of the block and require replacement of the entire unit. B series motors are surprisingly well sealed but their cooling systems are so poorly designed that they’re definitely the bottleneck. So much plastic makes them leak in several locations."
Are you sure that on the m140i's idrive isnt set to sports handling? On the idrive you can remove handling on sport making the steering light? Weird as my mate has an m135i and they both feel the same...
None of the F-Series M-Lites allows steering to be configured different to the mode it's on. Only M cars allow you to configure steering, gearbox, engine and suspension in their individual modes at a given time. The M Lites have eco pro, comfort, sport and sport plus and it's only for throttle unless you have adaptive suspension and you can configure that. Gearbox can be sport or normal. Steering cannot be on an m lite even if optioned well. Your mate probably doesn't feel it as such or he's got an LCI 135 and it's similar or same as 140
You can get a M140i with around 80k mileage with ZF auto for around 17k. I know that as I've had to convince myself not to trade my fully loaded M135i for a base spec M140i. The 40k list price road tax law in 2017 meant just the cars are quite bare with spec as they come just under 40k
@@legendgalaxy I guess it differs. For me, it depends on the age of the car. My M135i is a 2013 model and I bought it under 80k miles last year which I think is fair as it's 10k miles a year. The M140i is a newer car so technically it should have 60k miles or less depending on what year it is. Regardless, I'm a huge advocate for higher mileage vehicles. It's about how cars are looked after, not how much they're driven. I love it when someone daily drives and makes use of an amazing cars because they're not museum pieces, they're things to enjoy
The B58 just feels so strong from low down. Takes zero effort to build up boost and be in the right rev range. The M135i is weaker low down and does feel more rewarding to drive. It's hard to believe the B58 is a single turbo ..
I was in the same boat. I picked the M135i not knowing what the main difference was apart from the fact "it's somehow better" which I hope I've explained for everyone else. An M135i at 13k (prices have gone up since the video) is incredible value for money and the M140i is expensive at 18k+ but it's something that could give an RS3 a run for it's money so that too is amazing value for money. There's no wrong choice here as long as you don't overpay for the M135i
@@CarNitty I cant afford it just yet but idm waiting another year or so. Hopefully they get a bit cheaper in that time too. I'm gunna have to get the 140 or It will always be in the back of my head that theres an even better version. Both cars look the dogs bollocks though tbf
@@georgedolman444 you're paying for that engine. Without a doubt, that's where the money's going! I don't know if the M140i will depreciate though. It's the last RWD 3.0L i6 hatchback they will make. With the new M240i coming, maybe it will take a hit now but those that want 5 doors and the B58 will go for the M140i which means they'll hold value. I say, look around. The quoted prices in the video were correct at the time. We just got out of lockdown and restrictions were lifting so car values were very low back then
I'm afraid I don't have the means or resources to be able to do a drag races with a private strip. Maybe if I have enough subscribers one day, I can do it!
I Honestly love the rear end of the pre-LCI. You could argue the front end of the pre-LCI shares some of it's looks with a BMW F10/5 Series or F12/6 series with the bulbous headlights which can appeal to some people... The LCI definitely looks more neater and mature
That debate is such a strongly contested battle. The N54 as a twin turbo powerplant will get you similar gains to an N55 up to stage 2+. I'm told after stage 3x, the internals of N54 are better but most don't go beyond stage 2+ so that comparison has too many arguements. The B58 is the best engine. Stock for stock and also if tuned to the limit
My friend had a stage 2 N54 335i and he pushed 390BHP. He even said anything beyond the 400 mark on stock turbos will cause them to fail so safe to stay below it so although it's tunable and a twin turbo, it can't be used for the thing that makes it unique
@@CarNitty hmm weird i had an 335i n54 and now i have a M135i N55 both have stage 2, i got 390hp from the N55 on the N54 i had 460hp so maybe i depends on the tune.
The engine has definitely got better with every generation. Only issue is the N55 (esp PWG) isn't as tunable as the N54. The N54 and B58 are monsters when it comes to power mods. N55 isn't a slouch but at least it's reliable compared to N54. Do check out some of my other BMW content and if you like what you see, hit subscribe and stick around!
It's unfair the N55 is sat between the unreliable yet extremely capable N54 lump and the brilliant B58. It's always gonna be known as the "worse" turbo charged 3.0L turbo charged straight six BMW made but it's not a slouch and nor is it a bad engine... I personally wouldn't buy a car with the N54 and I just couldn't afford the 140i
The N55 you see in the OG M2 is a much more capable engine than the normal N55. The M division worked their magic on it to make it withstand a lot more abuse as well as power but it's still not an out and out proper M engine even in the M2

Buying one tomorrow mate and these videos have me super excited 👍🏾
Congrats and good luck with the ownership!
Update?
B58 forged internals. N55 not. Massive difference for those who are engineering minded, like me
The EWG N55 in the M135i has forged conrods and crankshaft
@@wingmanlmgcan you link the source for that information as i have a m135i ewg 2014 and like to know more about the engine.
There are several n55s including a forged crankshaft version on the 2015 facelift versions of m135i.
Both great cars!
Even better as this LCI1 M140 is the LCI2 M140i that has been built after 07/2017 which will give you the complete new dashboard & black panel speedometer.
...but try to find one before 06/2018 with introduction of OPF/GPF

I test drove the m135i in 2017 and then bought the m140i and still got it.
Hold onto it with your life! They just don't make it like them anymore...
Good comparison, personally I think that the Facelift car looks much better. The Pre-LCi has a face that only it's mother could love.
I think the fact we all like different things is what makes the world a beautiful place. Would hate a place where everyone drove the same car lol.
Glad you like the video. Please check out some of my other uploads and consider subscribing if you like the content!
I also prefer facelift, but I still think e81/e87 look better for me :) hence I bought one (but rather basic diesel, not a sporty version)

B58 will wake up a fair bit more with power mods compared to the n55 power mods.
Been waiting for this type of video for ages! Brilliant stuff. Think I'm tempted more by the N55 engine in the 54 plage 135i!
I'm still in shock we did this comparison in 2021 when the opportunity to compare 2x ZF Auto 135i/140i could've been been 5 years ago
We used to turbo convert E36 325's with rebuilt and forged engines, luckily they where very fast, because they where also very illegal and attracted a lot of attention from the law... good times :D
Nowadays it's super easy to be a "tuner".
Unfortunately, turbocharging is the norm now and the N55 and B58 is quite a debate especially as the latter costs a lot more so this video is here to explain whether it's worth the extra money
this deffo the video i needed. m135 baby here i come..
Get an xHP Stage 3 tune for the 135i and you will experience that torque snap no matter what gear you're in.

Yes that's correct. The B58 is a brand new engine that was developed and is completely different to the N series blocks
Late 2013 models came with ewg I thought
Very hit and miss with the 63 plate cars. I've seen some with the older style M Sport wheel on a 63 reg. Best way to know for sure is by getting a 14 plate onwards

@@Ghettede yes it does! The PWG can be mapped to 400BHP and it can't go beyond that whereas EWG can continue on but the B58 is just so much more powerful

Jst over 500hp🚗💨💨
Absolute lightwork for that mighty B58!
Love my M140i, after a bit of tuning it's a wild beast.
@@DjNikGnashers the B58 did embarrass OG M2 N55 so definitely believe you!

If moneys no object for either, 140i all day long and lastly if you don't want to map your car and you're happy with stock power, the 135i is better as the 140i is so tunable, you'll feel egged on to map it

i have a 2014 M135i as well but with the 6 speed Manual Gearbox. so much joy to drive.
The m140i looks way better he was being nice mate

I've actually covered the topic of the N54 in my "335i v M135i" video:
m.th-cam.com/video/nXlXrk9B3zk/w-d-xo.html
Reliability is not really a problem in the N55 or B58 but the PWG N55 will not take much power which I covered in the comparison mentioned.
@@CarNitty i had a pre lci 116i before so i cant say i dont like the looks. i wanted more power and a more modern looking/feeling car. In my oppinion the lci is much nicer inside so it was the obvious choice.

I doubt the extra 5 horses make big difference😅

Insurance plays a factor these days with getting an m135i or a m140i as I found the 135 hell of a lot cheaper on insurance and I’m 23. Would’ve defo gone for the 140 but didn’t have to have finance with the 135 and then the i in insurance was about £150 a month difference which didn’t seem worth it

Nice video 👍👍👍exactly what I am looking for
Glad I was able to help your buying decision
Damaged bottom s55 engine are cheap from breakers, bolt in onto the n55 and throw in fored pistone/rods, you got a hybrid n55 and with a larger turbo you are good
Sounds great in theory. Whether this can be made into a reality is yet to be seen!
@@CarNitty can be done as is being done as they both share the same size blocks, the bottom end is the business end but people rather just go with a complete s55 instead but this hybrid way is cheaper.
@@CarNitty I'll keep you posted brother
@@TheCinderellaman10 I can confirm this works I’ve got a closed deck m135 lci n55 with s55 crankshaft 84.5 mm bore & ported head it’s basically an s55 & it’s an absolute beast💨
I much prefer the look or the 135, in white the 140 is better but darker colours look boring on the 140 whilst the 135 brings them to life a bit
@@CarNitty my dad has a pre lci in black, looks class for what it is honestly. Hoping to buy it off him soon

These cars are holding its value
They both should do fairly well especially the 140 because it's the last RWD hatchback film BMW
In this year of 2023, the N55 will be neck and neck with a 2023 2.0T accord. Or most cheaper newer high end models. You need a B58 im today’s standards
The N55 stock for stock for any 2.0T of it's day is a stronger powerplant if you ask me. These newer one's of course will battle the B58
I've done a backbox delete to the exhaust so the tone of the car was much deeper and yes it can make a of a ZF bang as it shifts
Nice video mate,
but Why not put the reliability of these engines in the cost balance ?
Yes its true that Bmw with B58 no have already high mileage.. we’ll see
So, for now buy an M135i pre-LCI and change the front bumper by the LCI version is the real fair shake, or Disgrace for BMW purist 😅
Thanks for your answer, keep on 👍

Nice video bruv.. Have you driven the manual version of m140i? Any thoughts on it?
@@jennijdm9560 So you recommend a manual then? Is there much difference in MPG?
Yeah love mine. ZF8 feels artificial.
No idea what the mpg is sending it but daily 30mpg and 35+ish mpg on motorways.
Great video. So for summary you're paying extra for the B58 engine over the N55?
Exactly that. Both cars are the same generation and not too different visually or at all if you get the LCI M135 but the extra money goes into the engine. It's used in the current M240i/M340i/M440i so it's truly a next gen engine in the older chassis!

I think the b58 is so much better to be honest but at the end of the day they’re both plenty of power for the road
@@rayland9305 water charge cooling is significantly better than many intercooler set
Ups on lesser engines
Closed desk design, twin scroll turbo
Have you actually owned a b58? Or are you just getting this from online
@@TimChumpI'm talking about cooling the engine you dunce.
"BMW Tech here. Surprisingly the B series motors oil filter housings don’t leak oil. They just have a tendency to warp where they mount against the block causing coolant to pour down the left hand side of the block and require replacement of the entire unit. B series motors are surprisingly well sealed but their cooling systems are so poorly designed that they’re definitely the bottleneck. So much plastic makes them leak in several locations."
@@TimChump The N55 also has a twin scroll turbo 🙃The B58 has cooling issues directly because of the closed deck design.
Your mate probably doesn't feel it as such or he's got an LCI 135 and it's similar or same as 140
Two different versions of the m135i pwg 315 bhp ewg 322 bhp, if your m135i was made after july 2013 your m135i is ewg

Love your Bangladeshi accent bro! It’s what makes you unique ❤️
Also it's 20K plus for a decent M140i.
You can get a M140i with around 80k mileage with ZF auto for around 17k. I know that as I've had to convince myself not to trade my fully loaded M135i for a base spec M140i. The 40k list price road tax law in 2017 meant just the cars are quite bare with spec as they come just under 40k
@@CarNitty decent to me is less than 20K miles....

If you can find a mega spec M135i, you won't be upset as most M140is are poverty spec due to 40k road tax change in 2017

The N54 and the B58 are the better ones
That debate is such a strongly contested battle.
The N54 as a twin turbo powerplant will get you similar gains to an N55 up to stage 2+. I'm told after stage 3x, the internals of N54 are better but most don't go beyond stage 2+ so that comparison has too many arguements.
The B58 is the best engine. Stock for stock and also if tuned to the limit
@@CarNitty a n55 with stage 2+ will get you 400hp a n54 wil get you to at least 450hp minimum.
N55 was a step up from the n54 and the b58 is a step up from both of them n55 is still a great engine tho
The engine has definitely got better with every generation. Only issue is the N55 (esp PWG) isn't as tunable as the N54. The N54 and B58 are monsters when it comes to power mods. N55 isn't a slouch but at least it's reliable compared to N54.
