  • Here it is, the fifth episode of my 'Dakar Diaries', Tough Days and X-Rays! I have shared 5 minutes onboard out of the 5-hour day on Stage 4. I hope you enjoy it. It was the toughest stage so far as it had rained the day before and the sand underneath was wet making the front wheel incredibly hard to control at times. In dry conditions, it cuts through with no problem, letting you place it where you want. In the wet sand, it was having none of it.
Then onto Stage 5, I thought my Dakar was over after crashing in deep sand but the X-Rays proved me wrong, I had to push through the pain barrier to stay in the Rally.

Fair play! That’s the Dakar spirit right there and divides the finishers from the rest. Amazing

I can relate to the dislocated collarbone although I broke mine, it is sore as hell after a bike crash. I take my hat off to you for continuing the rally with a dislocated collarbone. Much respect to you.

That must have been so hard mentally and physically James and with all the lack of sleep I bet you found depths within yourself you didn’t know where there ......and you’ve already had plenty of challenges over the years. You really did pick a tough year to do the Dakar so the achievement of finishing is pretty astounding and must be very satisfying

Sorry to hear about the crash James, Good luck with finishing. Then you'll need someone heavy sitting on your back to snap the collar bone back in place. Give McGuinness a call!!! ✌👍

Genuinely Unbelievable…… I dislocated my shoulder once after riding full pelt into the back of a taxi, couldn’t move it for a week, actually worse than a break as it keeps moving. Sterling effort James you are as hard as nails, but I think we all knew that✊🏍💨.
ps: camping can be fun, spent a few days in the Brecon Beacons last summer finding some trails, sunny and warm with a pub at the end of each day, not quite Dakar though thank God !

What a sickening feeling that must’ve been - thinking your Dakar was over…..can’t imagine what it took to carry on with that injury and finish! 👏👏👍👍 P.S I love camping 😂

Tough to watch that. The heartbreak and disappointment was evident to see. Racers will understand those feelings to a degree. Brutal race, and incomprehensible numbers when it comes to km and time.

You must have legs like bloody leaf springs after two weeks of this, not to mention riding hundreds of k’s offroad over wet sand with a knackered shoulder. TT will be a breeze after this, mate. Nothing but a cool breeze. 😜

The pain and being so tired say stop, but you know you must go on. Such effort, and, like you say, when you're off the bike there's more to do. I've experienced being very very tired when I tried to do 1000 miles in 24 hours here in the UK on a Royal Enfield Himalayan, without much in the way of motorways. I was 76 miles short when I ran out of time. I found a nice spot in a service station on some grass in the sunshine, made myself comfortable and went to sleep, only to be woken up by an arse hole who thought it was funny to shout down my earhole. I was very tired, but nothing like your level. Even so, I hope to try again this year. Keep it up James!

I think you found camping worse than the Dakar 🤣...and can see the scene now, give me my bike I'm riding...trucks guys.."no way mate", just give me the bike now! At least your dislocation made you forget the wet boots...silver lining an all that 🤣
