    You overfilled the engine, its a dry sump so its spat the excess into the PCV system and then its found its way to the lowest point in the system which is the bottom of the intercoolers. That one that was leaking probably already had a boost leak. I highly, highly, doubt you have a major turbo issue with both turbos at the same time. My advice, clean it all out, do a PROPER oil change (that oil looked HORRIBLE) and replace that one IC thats leaking. Then re-start it and monitor for leaks. Check the bottom charge pipes after 10-20 mins of running. If all ok then test drive for a few miles, keep checking if after 3 or 4 checks then it was overfilled and thats your problem. I reckon a 90% chance this is your issue. HTH (ex C6 RS6 owner)

      @Coldfin9er 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least do a relative compression test with a scope before starting, just to see if there is anything very obviously wrong with the engine.if something looks wonky then at least you know a normal comp test and leak down is worth the time. Fingers crossed a clean up and fix the boost leak(s?) will sort it!

    • @auwz66
      @auwz66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Coldfin9er You could, but there is no real easy way for oil to get into the intake like that and for the engine not to be sounding like a tractor due to a mangled piston or broken cylinder head. I bet the engine was right on max level when he got it. He added 1L oil when cold so it was probably 1L over. He then only had to remove 100ml (after driving the car he replied to my comment saying 100ml removed) so the other 900ml went..... on his floor :)

      I have to agree, when turbos leak they will mist the oil rather than pore into the inlet tract, take it all apart clean it change the pcv valve and refill the oil correctly and try it again, and and fix that leaking intercooler

    • @MattyEngland
      @MattyEngland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why did it start pouring out when the engine was started though? Seems more likely that its coming from one of the turbo oil seals to me.

    • @adrianlivesey4375
      @adrianlivesey4375 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MattyEngland Once the engine is running there is air pressure from the turbos, please also note that when stationary it had leaked oil out. Finally, given the amount of oil in the bottom of the intercooler just topping up a bit from what might be coming from a bad turbo would not lead to the amount of oil leaking onto the floor. Overfilled oil and them being filled via the PCV system is way more likely then 2 blown turbos filling it up with that much oil, blown turbo seals are likely to make it smoke and coat the inside, not fill it with oil

    I'll go with overfilled with oil, both turbos gone the same way.. Too coincidental imo. Dry inlets but compressor side of turbos full of oil. There must be at least a litre that came out.. Plus what's still inside the i/c's.. The car would be reporting low oil if that amount disappeared. Drain it, fill it with correct amounts and restest. I think it'll be OK

  • @jamest5149
    @jamest5149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Check the crank case ventilation system and any oil level overfills… if it was turbos I would expect it to smoke badly at idle and the throttle bodies and Linley system to be coated… doesn’t seem right for turbo seal failures which normally go on the exhaust side of the turbos as well 🤷

    just a thought, but it could also be an issue with the PCV valve. I know that the 5.2 in the A8 / S8 had an issue with them and the oil separator to the extent that Audi did a TSB for it. Might be worth having a dig around for it. I saw it somewhere as im a big fan of the A8 so if i find it i'll post a link up here for it.

  • @bjrn-olavsolli9577
    @bjrn-olavsolli9577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My money is on the fact that you probably overfilled it with oil and the excess oil was forced in to the intake through the crank case ventilation, accumulating in the intercooler. Might also be blown seals on the turbos due to excess oil pressure. Anyway, I have no experience or specific knowledge on these engines, but I have experience with an issue somewhat related on on old turbo diesels where excessive blow-by on the piston rings cause excessive crank case pressure, forcing oil vapor in to the intake through the PCV system, accumulating in the intercooler. My intercooler was actually dripping with oil because of this.

    Possible turbo seals, check if the previously installers used a oil reducer on the turbo oil pupe feed, a lot of people forget to install them when they replace turbos it the cartridges . That noise was your engine running out of engine oil 😅, you also need to get that intercooler sealed / repaired.

    I think your first port of call Dean would be to drain and fill with correct amount of oil ,reason being i highly doubt that both turbos have gone .Also why didn't it scream warnings with that amount of oil in the IC'S .My guess is it was overfilled .This would be a good and cheaper option for starters .Really hope this is the issue bro

  • @turbodynamics630
    @turbodynamics630 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Having two turbos fail at the same time is unlikely unless there is another underlying issue that caused the failures, low oil pressure, high oil pressure, contaminated oil etc. If the turbo seals have failed, it's a simple job for a turbo company to fix, the hard bit is getting them out! We also offer Stage 1 and Stage 2 hybrid upgrades for these.

    My car did the same - and still does even though the turbos have been rebuilt. There are something like 10 non-return valves in the PVC/breather system - if any have failed then oil can leak from the turbos, so far I've found 4 failed on my car. If the oil/breather system isn't right turbos can leak when running and also when the engine is off because the bottom of the oil tank is above the centre line of the turbos.

    Jeez that sucks! Perhaps just one turbo has gone and put oil in the intercooler, as the intercooler is shared with both turbo's perhaps that's why there's oil in the other hose. I think its very rare for both turbo's to fail the same time, but not impossible. I guess if you are going to have to take the engine out to get to the turbos you may as well sort them both out. Don't want the same thing happening again. Good luck mate

  • @Welwynnick
    @Welwynnick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Please don't jump to any conclusions. it might be the turbos, but I wouldn't assume so. These engines have very, very complex charging, lubrication, scavenging, breathing and cooling systems, and the first thing to do is understand all of them, and knock off the easy things first. The place to start is to download and thoroughly digest VAG Self Study Program SSP 431 - Audi RS 6 and pay particular attention to the interaction between the turbo oil drain scavenging and the crankcase breather. The RS6 is different to everything else. Hope that helps, Nick

    whilst the engine is out it may be a good time to start re-freshing some of the hoses etc, i believe that a few common problems with this model are corroded pipes deep in the engine bay along with the rear oil seal, do as much as you can whilst the lump is out.
    also maybe worth getting the engine carbon cleaned and a leak down test

    • @cammmy
      @cammmy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sorted my hoses by chopping the corroded bits in the arch and replacing them with hose but yes, absolutely, if the engine has to come out, hoses and oil pump seal should be done too. A decoke on the intake ports and Injector service are worth it but these don't clog up nearly as badly as the S6 or some other DI engines. When I did mine at 93k miles, there was some carbon in there but I doubt it was enough to affect performance. The only issue with doing compression/leakdown on these is that if they need to be done with the engine warm, there's a lot of stuff that has to come off to get access to the plugs. It would be a struggle to do it and get all 10 tested without it losing temp.

The consensus is that 1,200nm is the safe cut-off, but at that level you want to be careful with kickdown, as if you floor it, load up the engine and it's drops two gears, the shock can snap input shafts. You also want to make sure you change the fluid regularly and occasionally do the bridge seal and the 4 other little tubular seals accessed by dropping the mechatronic unit. Not a huge deal. @@bigmatt2896 No problem. Personally, I would go for the RS every time because it's easy to get one as an estate and they are massively tunable. The big issues are the oil pump seal and coolant pipes. Pipes have a workaround, as I did but the oil seal is always going to be a pain. It can be done by specialists with the engine in, but budget for that possibility unless you have a receipt for it. Mine has it but it's not that bad, so I'm just monitoring it. I also use Forte seal conditioner in the oil, which seems to have helped. Just a remap will see one of these at 680BHP and with an exhaust and secondary decat (which will pass MOT) you are looking at 730+, a bit more with down pipes and high flow primary cats. They can be had with at least the exhaust/map already done fairly readily. With a tuned RS, on a cool evening, spooling it on the brakes and letting go will make you crap your pants, even as the driver! It's difficult to describe.

      I think the oil is just feeding directly into the intake 😂

      @@SavingSalvage I’m looking forward to seeing that v10 come out. Surely if it’s leaky turbos that’s better than rings?

    Nothing like this has ever happened to my 2005 Ford Fusion in it's 16 year life Maybe I should get an Audi? On second thoughts, No!

    Unlikely both turbos have gone, and if the seals had gone you would be getting blue white smoke and misting, and not the quantity of oil you dumped out? My money is on over filling (given the oil volume dropped). Perhaps a good sign that your crank breathers and pCV/oil separator are not blocked, although they are probably in need of a good flush through at the same time as the inter coolers.

    Possibly turbo seal or the turbo is seeing way to much oil pressure.

    Maybe you overfilled it? Some dry sump cars must be running when you check the oil level.

    Dry Sump system, doubt it is the turbo's at all. look at the dry sump plumbing.
