@@bg22757 Most of modern cars are very overdone and overstyled. Desperately aggressive and unfocused stylisticly. Some audis look ok but only because they are hold overs from 2008-2016 styling atleast until facelifts. New RS6 is too aggresive and rear glass slant makes its trunk less usable for no good reason.
Its was phanastic for the typical leasing customer. To maintain this engine it’s one of the worst ever made. For the replacement of nearly any part the engine has to be removed. There is just no space to work. Also the engines losses lot of power due to coking of the intake ducts. Beautifully car but you need the money for maintenance on the long run
In hindsight from a person who was a teen at the time, 2008 might well have been the peak of society. Tech was becoming super common, things still played as they had decades prior, People were still very social and cars seemed to be riding a wave of cool that is now fading. Seriously, it felt like manufacturers just threw wild ideas at a wall and tried any idea that stuck(Especially here in America). Then the recession hit and everything changed every year since.

This is what made me fall in love with audi. The subtle design and utter madness under the hood. Such a sleeper. Sad to know cars like this will never happen again
Got one of these. Understated brilliance. Love it despite recent £11500 repair bill. And Ive taken a dead fridge down the tip in it. Do that in your Lambo ? Love the flexibility.
I am from the states but I have to say this is hands down one of the prettiest Audi products they made. I love the front face it has and how subtle it is. You wouldn't know it is the high-performance model until the person floors it and you hear that v10 roar. A brilliantly fast, yet understated car. These days these attributes are hard to find as everything is so overly styled
People really have overlooked the 2000s quite badly. There was a ton to like about that decade and it did a lot right. The 2000s had some very odd and special cars produced during that era that nowdays you just dont get. It was almost like manufacturers just threw ideas at a wall hoping one or 2 would stick. And whatever ones did, they went with. No matter how ridiculous they were.
Fully in agreement. It is arguably the best era. It was the era when technology enabled high reliability and daily driverability and comfort BUT crucially not so complicated to be unreliable like modern cars. Also build quality was at its peak during that decade. Now even a slight hail shower will pit a modern cars paintwork 😂 Finally cars were still driver focused while today they are jut stuffed full of gimmicks that one just doesn't need/distract
Was driving around with myfriend in his bmw 328 years ago pulled up to a roundabout. I was passenger,I turned my head and this silver audi estate next us flared wheel arches massive wheels etc,i said to my mate is that an rs6? Yes it was!! Dared my mate to race it, I swear down now, it's the first time I'd ever seen a car pull off the line and the front raised!!by the time my friend was in 3rd gear audi was gone!!!
Going back even further I had an Audi 100 S4 (before they sorted out the paper sizes) I loved it and at the time 240 hp from the 5 cylinder turbo felt pretty good. Happy days 😊
This almost looks better today than it did at launch. Compared to the brand new buck-toothed M3 estate this looks far better to me. Thanks for the rewind Harry, I can see why you wanted another go.
I had one of the first RS6's in the UK and did over 65K miles in it. An early puncture meant it was off the road for the first 6 weeks as there were no tyres to fit it and the linked suspension eventually gave up the ghost meaning that a steady 70 down the M42 with minor road joints resulted in the car going slightly off line meaning you were constantly correcting but overall fantastic, Comfortable, effortless and intersting when you put your foot down.
When I was a teenager I was absolutely obsessed with this car, watching sound compilations on TH-cam, finding tuned ones by MTM or ABT, listening them for hours. With time of course I calmed down, now I'm 27 but right now, the sound of this car in Harry's vid, reminded me all these feelings 🥰
This is the first I've heard one of these cars through a decent external mic and I'm absolutely floored by the sound. Far better than the R8 for my money, not something I thought I'd be saying.

This car design has aged like fine wine. Everybody keeps mentioning the M5 V10, but they always forget Audi made a car with basically a Lamborghini engine + 2 turbos and with 80 more hp
This is better for average drivers cause it understeers pretty early and you can realize you are doing something wrong. The M5 can do better lap times than this but it requires skills.
@@PaulTC97 Nonsense. What 'skills' do you need to drive a wonderfully balanced car? The BMW even has this thing called 'feel' which allows the driver to have a million times more information on the conditions, grip, tire placement. I've heard that absolute nonsense about FWD-understeery junk being 'better' because of all kinds of made-up wildly imaginary things, and they've never been true. I've driven these cars and so many others way up north on ice and snow, specifically also testing them and not just driving around for leisure, and often even on ice you can get faster lap times on a RWD car than AWD which seems impossible. But it's true. There's even evidence from that time period these cars are from (just a few years later) by Swedish Auto Motor och Sport who tested RS4 vs. 335ix touring vs.135i vs. Civic Type-R among others, on the same tire model. On ice. With a professional racing driver. The slowest of the ones I mentioned was the RS4. When you have a predictable front end with excellent turn-in and great feel you can absolutely maximise your grip and drive right at the limit. You can be more precise and place the car exactly where you want which can mean hitting an exact groove or avoiding a certain bit of slippery stuff. And above all when you can avoid understeer which makes you back out totally you can instead keep on driving right on the limit of both the front and rear end grip. You'd have to provoke the Audi to go sideways to gain any corner speed or corner exit grip advantage, and no-one does that on the road with such a horrible car with totally unpredictable handling, unpredictably AWD system which you don't know if it'll understeer or send it into wild oversteer... If you don't have a football field of space but instead a lane to keep to you can't chuck it in sideways and then figure out the rest, no, you have to keep it neat-ish and so the Audi will only understeer and you're wasting massive amounts of potential grip which you can't use as you're limited by the front wheels washing out. You can't touch the throttle when the front wheels are overwhelmed.
I remember working on the turbos on those for Audi, enjoyed a couple of trips out to IHI in Germany too. Massively detuned out of the factory, turbos were capabale of much more, but Audi didn't want to overdo it as it knew it would have to up the power for the next generation..
@@mattmorris2867 I doubt they used 2 turbos bc of "2 stages" of boost, normally you use 2 with V-configuration bc of the headers, lack of space, its much easier to feed 1 turbo from 1 bank of cylinders than 1 turbo from both banks. The lag is small bc you still have a BIG displacement to work with. But with smaller turbos (when there is not much reserve of potential extra power) the lag would be even smaller, engine response would be even better. Factory use bigger turbines also bc of less heat and longevity. Excuse my English.

what a proper car. Amazing what was happening just about 10 years ago. A product of a very different vw.Piech's vw. One which was building XL1's and R8 V12 TDI's, not EV's that were so bad in terms of crash safety and structure that they needed the entire front trunk area filled up with crash structure to pass crash standards(no really. The ID3 and ID4 are both like that)
I love this Car so much. Not just because of the engine, and everything else but the memories! My dad bought one new in 2008, I practically grew up in it. He had the sedan version which was very rare. I remember how he used to show me the engine and tell me it looked like a bulls face with the horns because it was a lamborghini engine. This Car started my never ending passion for cars, I love it!
Had the V8 A6 at the time, and got the V10 S6 for a weekend to try out. It did not have the turbos of the RS6, but the V10 sound was insane. I did a few sound recordings and videos before I had to return it. This engine was insanely great, and I was very tempted to get one.
I remember doing some runway races against this years back in my SLK55 and they really do push on after 60mph and keep pulling. Still think they're super desirable.
My memory lane moment was when for the first time ever buying a new A4 hearse from the maindealer and feeling so depressed after seeing one of these in the showroom and not being able to afford it! Great vid Harry
A friend of mine was a sales manager at an Audi dealership when he rang me to come and test drive an interesting car. When I got there he handed me the keys keys to a weapons grade Audi RS6 Avant V10. Huge power, Huge torque, Huge grins and seriously gigglesome. I took one pass down the road and back to check for any errant police or speed camera vans... Then.... Bloody Hell... 0 - 150mph in a trouser filling, No time at all, with the feeling of a freight train power delivery. Hugely expensive at the time and If memory serves, either 8 or 9 mpg... What`s not to love. All these years later It`s a vivid memory.
Thank you for this video on the RS6 V10 Avant - it brought back fond memories for me. The understated look, very much in the mold of an original Q-Car.
Great to revisit the Legend RS6 Avant. A true classic and king of the road in it`s day. Not even BMW M`s or Mercedes AMG`s could live with it`s massive power.
Love them! Arguably my favourite chapter for the S/RS models. I'm really taken by how understated they are (something that Audi are getting away from these days I feel) but that there were enough visual clues on it to grab the attention of those who cared enough to know. It also blew my mind that this RS6 was packing a V10 from a Gallardo.
Terrific video Harry, so great to see cars we lusted over, actually not that long ago. And V10 estate, hilarious and wonderful period in history. Fab stuff
Great Video Harry, Great to see to see content of performance heroes from the days before engine downsizing and ever more stringent engine emission regulations. I owned the previous (C5 )model in the lovely dark blue and adored the traction and engine noise but found the ride just too harsh. More video's with content like this one please.
An absolutely awesome car, I drove one everyday for 2 years. What I loved most was that people had no idea what it was and what it was capable of. The best bit was when you were driving at a reasonable speed then put your foot down hard it actually went ‘boom’. Was a nightmare due to 20” wheels in a normal wheel arch, the turning circle was rubbish (had a V8 with 19” wheels before it so really noticed this). The other downside were the running costs, needed new tyres every 7000 miles and as I only drove short distances the fuel costs were outrageous, that’s the only reason I sold it.❤
In 2013 I went with a friend to an Audi Sport day at Oulton Park. Our choice of cars were r8v10plus and rs6 avant. We thought r8 was good until we changed to rs6. I drove first in that on the prescribed road route and stopped at traffic lights. When they turned green I took off and then screamed at my friend “is the road clear and straight”. I was laughing so much that the tears were streaming down my face and blurring my vision, it is an occurrence that even today when his wife and him pass those lights they refer to that day. I see why you liked this one so much, ours was a mere v8 turbo.
We had an Avus Silver one back in the day and as a family wagon it was immense. Yes it understeered on roundabouts, but the brutality of its acceleration and the ‘look’ made up for it. We saw 15mpg once too 😅
I remember when these came out, and I spotted one at Warrington Audi as a demonstrator model in that fabulous Sepang Blue. The salesman stated that they had not sold even one yet, although the £80k price tag and the credit crunch probably didn't help. Great video.
I drive the same model, black outside and inside. My engine is a 3.0 TDI chipped to 320 hp / 632 nmt. An absolute dream to drive. A true wolf in sheepskin.
I've had a 2008 A6 Allroad V6 3,0 TDI MANUAL (which is for the most part the same car - save the engine and the gearbox) now for 6 years - and I keep coming back at how incredibly good the car is. I've tried many comparable cars in the meantime (a 2008 C-class Merc Wagon - said by some to have brilliant steering, and a recently purchased F11 530d xDrive bimmer) - but the audi has them beat comfortably in terms of ride comfort, chassis control (YES! Even compared to the lauded F11!), practicality and somewhat also in the build quality. We need to appreciate that - yes, there's no space whatsoever in the engine bay of the audi - but then again, the guys from Ingolstadt/Neckarsulm managed to squeeze in a massive engine - even more massive in case of RS6 - with two turbos, no less - IN FRONT of the front axle, keeping their brilliant AWD system (yes it's overall better than xDrive). The brakes are better than in the F11 as well - despite being smaller (321mm front discs compared to 348mm on the bimmer) - they have a better, much more consistent feel - yes, the bimmer has ZF 8 speed auto, which you feel downshifting during braking - but still, brakes on the audi have been mightily impressive and smooth, also very reliable. Also - the audi, thanks probably to the air suspension - shines massively in the roadholding and road absorbtion. Bimmer is nice to drive, even on the twisties - but the audi somehow feels safer (maybe a matter of getting used to) and more convincing, although the bimmer has double wishbone front suspension (that said, the audi's multi-link is in essence the same). The audi doesn't lean in the corners as much as the bimmer, which leans and only THEN settles. Also - I'm still impressed with the power on the audi - hasn't been tuned or modded, still the 171kW engine feels mighty impressive compared to the 190kW on the bimmer (450Nm vs 560Nm) - maybe because the bimmer has an automatic transmission which just muddles everything like a half-baked potato between the pedal and the engine. There's one single gripe with the audi - the fact that I've replaced the front serpentine belt (in spite of also having replaced the pulleys, tensioners, harmonic balancer) for about 20 times - many of them in the dark, on the road, in the snow or dirt or wet fiddling under the car for abt. 2 hours (the audi always knows better if my trip plans are important or not) - there's something not very well-designed for the audi there, hoping the bimmer will fare much better (so far, it has). Also - the interior of the audi is better put together - even if the audi is previous generation compared to the F11 - the air vents are still intact, there is no fading/sticky/flaking rubber on the door handles, steering wheel buttons, etc. Also, the audi has better luggage room (again, in spite of being a generation older) - the length to the top of seats in folded position is EXACTLY 10cm longer in the audi, although the bimmer is only 4 cms shorter overall - and the audi has a massive cavern under the trunk floor for all the junk - in spite of also having the battery there, the spare wheel (which the bimmer does not - and cannot), the air suspension, rear drive diff AND A LARGER fuel tank (82 vs 77). Overall - if only the constant replacement of serpentine belts (cheapest ones are made by KAMOKA and cost EUR 8 - I have 3 of them in the trunk, and no, it's not because of the price) - wasn't there - the car couldn't be blamed for much. Thanks for the video on this massive madness from Neckarsulm - and greetings from Latvia.
The RS6 Avant has always been a dream car of mine, super quick and practical enough for day to day life. I was in my 20s when this car came out and always wanted something similar. Fast forward 15 years and I'm now driving a Mercedes S204 C63 Estate, there is just something about a fast wagon that's so laughable when you're driving it. Great review!
I owned one from new 2009 model. Factory specced it With all the bells and whistles, ceramics sunroof everything, Fabulous car. Few minor niggles every now and then but rock solid drivetrain. Was one of the first to get over 750bhp stage 2. These easily do 1000bhp on stock internals now. Just recently sold one of these. Used it as a daily for 3 years had a lot of fun with it. Mine was metallic blue with white interior. Such a quick car, very usable and discreet. Just wished it made a little more exhaust noise. Great car.
One of the very best "Kombis" (German name for "Wagon" translates to and is short for "Combination") These are incredibly affordable here in Germany (Probably because most of them are here) and i know from Owners all over Germany that these are also fairly easy to have maintained and because of the parts it uses also easily repaired. But again, that might be because i'm in Germany. I know in the USA they're apparently more expensive to maintain, no idea about the UK Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
Harry: you never miss a beat in your videos, and I cannot thank you enough. I wonder if you have ever given any thought to including any reviews of sometimes dubbed 'suburban special' - I am thinking of both British and (more rarely) of the foreign cars that were common sights between, say, 1955-1975. I realise that the cars' performance and driveability is often woeful. But these cars will perhaps be etched in the minds and memories of your older viewers, and the best of them (say 1955-1975) we re highly characterful.
This car and the '06 RS4 is what got me hooked on Audi RS models. I eventually bought a C7 RS7 which I still have. On a recent long distance trip I averaged 39 UK MPG over 900 kms. I just made it on one tank. An exceptional all round car, driveability, performance, handling, power, economy, comfort and luxury. It just depends which mode you are in. I couldn't be happier. Edit: And reliable. Nothing has gone wrong at all in 5 years.
I had a late C6 RS6 Avant for almost 3 years. Best car I have ever owned. So comfortable and smooth then smashed you into the distance when you wanted it too. The only minor downside was the MPG, I was averaging not far off single figures. I would love another over a C7 or a C8. Currently drive an 8V RS3 as I find it to be a mini RS6.
Ah yes but back when these were new petrol was so much cheaper and money went alot further too so balanced out i guess. the 2016 RS4 is the good middle ground i think

Still looks bang up to date to my eye. Love the wheel arches too.
Looks far better than most modern cars.
The best RS6 design will always be the C7 (2013-2018)
Proof that fashion is temporary but style is permanent, I bet most of today’s performance cars don’t age nearly as elegantly as this shape has
I feel 2008 may have been the zenith year for cars. What a classic machine!
Economic crisis hit then
@@joshuakhaos4451 Yep. Cars, music, television, movies, almost everything from back then has aged like fine wine. Not the nonsense coming out these days.
@@rickmorty7284 Not all of it, but even the stuff that didnt age super well is more exciting than half of the shit now lol. But yeah, a lot has aged like fine wine. Maybe not as beautifully as the 80s has, but the 2000s deserves some credit.
Thankfully though, the 2000s havent gotten the 80s and 90s love yet and many of the fun cars from then are still very affordable.

I agree this was the RS era at its best
Sorry, C7 for the win. I'm biased as I own one......

Never mind the Audi, please give us a review of the NSU Ro80 hiding in the background. Such a special and futuristic car in its day!
I’ll second that!!!

yeah, bankrupted NSU with its warranty bills 😁
Thanks for the Ro80 film - now up on Harry's channel!
Sweet lord, what was that bill for if you don’t mind me asking?
You should watch mark mcanns video of him doing a tip run on his lambo. Fridge strapped to the roof 😂
Ever since the Layer Cake movie, it one for the dream garage
Don’t remember Harry being as happy as this for a while…… memories are always special no matter the car sometimes
V10 RS6 is such a legend of a car. Amazing. Can't thank you enough for your review.
What an incredible motor .. I so much prefer these memory lane videos over the latest performance Ferrari, Mclaren etc.
Love this generation of the rs6!!
There were 2 golden eras for cars; the 60s and the 2000s-2010. I appreciate the content from this era, Harry! Thank you for this!
Now even a slight hail shower will pit a modern cars paintwork 😂
Finally cars were still driver focused while today they are jut stuffed full of gimmicks that one just doesn't need/distract
Thanks for sharing.
I miss my S6 of the same generation. I don’t miss the electrical issues that cost thousands to work out, but beside that it was amazing
Same here but I didn't have any direct issues with mine. Besides an insane fuel bill and Audi's (lack of) service.
Some one at work has one the air rear shock failed about a grand to fix and rear main oil leak was a engine out ££££
@@ianthomas8743 I had a rear main seal on my Lamborghini go out a couple of times, as then Audi was trying to get rid of their old stock, and sent me the same garbage twice, but it was a mid engine, and easy to replace though, sad that Audi wouldnt sell you the revised rear seal, and ship the old garbage again and again
Wiring loom in the engine bay underspecced for the heat, so failed. Of course I found this out after being told I needed 2 new throttle bodies at 750+VAT each. Which was nice
@@iainarthur7713 It's sad and comforting to hear that someone had my exact experience. Unfortunately my loom caught fire and melted the entire harness. Car was down for MONTHS and cost 10k US to repair.
Great video as always, Harry. Would love to see more of these 'affordable' performance cars being reviewed. Maybe some hot hatch favourites from your EVO days? Thanks for the consistently great content.
They look very dated to me.
It’s not a Lambo engine. But yeah.
There's also a pretty Ro80 in the garage! Hopefully it'll be featured in one of the upcoming videos 😊
I remember working on the turbos on those for Audi, enjoyed a couple of trips out to IHI in Germany too. Massively detuned out of the factory, turbos were capabale of much more, but Audi didn't want to overdo it as it knew it would have to up the power for the next generation..
Even then the next generation made less power iirc
Big turbo = big lag.
@@jareknowak8712 that’s why there were two. They spool up at different revs so lag wasn’t an issue on these.
@@jareknowak8712 that’s why there were two. They spool up at different revs so lag wasn’t an issue on these.
@@mattmorris2867
I doubt they used 2 turbos bc of "2 stages" of boost, normally you use 2 with V-configuration bc of the headers, lack of space, its much easier to feed 1 turbo from 1 bank of cylinders than 1 turbo from both banks.
The lag is small bc you still have a BIG displacement to work with.
But with smaller turbos (when there is not much reserve of potential extra power) the lag would be even smaller, engine response would be even better.
Factory use bigger turbines also bc of less heat and longevity.
Excuse my English.
Yes yes yes, all lovely Harry but hang on, NSU RO80!!!! Video very soon hopefully.
Been rebuilding the engines of mine for 2 years (have 2 engines just in case) and did a start-up last week - dropped a sleeve so im back to square one. Thanks for taunting me Harry! It will be back running, thats for sure.

what a proper car. The ID3 and ID4 are both like that)
Just love the grunting of the older Audis..
I love how retro the interior is and I love the Audi red and white dials. A future classic!
best sleeper ever. Remember this from Top Gear, with Hammond
What a treat to have a mid week video from Harry!
I love the audi products from 90s to 2008 had 5 of them today’s audi is smooth riding cars yet not alive like the older models 😂
Harry! I think that the people want a new series of classic cars just because 🎉😅. Love when u review old cars
Nice! These, and older, soon to be classics are a lot more fun to watch than modern exotica.
The golden years of Audi. I have the S3 8P and the aesthetics are unbeatable. Chunky and muscular but understated.
More of these revisited reviews please! Love seeing the slightly older stuff with mad engines!
Agreed! Makes for very interesting content! 👌🏻
gosh, that is my favourite rs6.. newer cars are super good ofc, but this has a special place in my heart
Fab stuff
Great Video Harry,
Great to see to see content of performance heroes from the days before engine downsizing and ever more stringent engine emission regulations. I owned the previous (C5 )model in the lovely dark blue and adored the traction and engine noise but found the ride just too harsh.
More video's with content like this one please.
Definitely one of my dream cars. It was just so mad and cars like this will never be made again.
Still a gorgeous looking Audi even in todays modern styling!
The other downside were the running costs, needed new tyres every 7000 miles and as I only drove short distances the fuel costs were outrageous, that’s the only reason I sold it.❤
An obviously well-looked after car with not many miles and doubtless a future classic. We look back on these with nostalgia.
With the smooth body and flush lights, snow must be so easy to clear off of the car in winter.
Definitely a candidate as an ultimate sleeper. Thanks for sharing, Harry.
Ultimate how? In understeer, lack of feel, unnatural and unbalanced handling, being slow?

In 2013 I went with a friend to an Audi Sport day at Oulton Park. Our choice of cars were r8v10plus and rs6 avant. We thought r8 was good until we changed to rs6. I drove first in that on the prescribed road route and stopped at traffic lights. When they turned green I took off and then screamed at my friend “is the road clear and straight”. I was laughing so much that the tears were streaming down my face and blurring my vision, it is an occurrence that even today when his wife and him pass those lights they refer to that day. I see why you liked this one so much, ours was a mere v8 turbo.
Please make more of these revisited videos!
The RS6 Avant will always be a very special vehicle... Thanks Harry.
Great idea to revisit old legends. Brilliant to watch 🙌
“The steering will go in and out but not up and down, which means I can’t see the speedo” neither could the camera, excellent, made me chuckle 😀

I drive the same model, black outside and inside. My engine is a 3.0 TDI chipped to 320 hp / 632 nmt. An absolute dream to drive. A true wolf in sheepskin.
Definitely now one of the modern classics....❤
Thanks for the video on this massive madness from Neckarsulm - and greetings from Latvia.
should do more revisits, there great videos
The RS6 Avant has always been a dream car of mine, super quick and practical enough for day to day life. I was in my 20s when this car came out and always wanted something similar. Great car.

These are incredibly affordable here in Germany (Probably because most of them are here) and i know from Owners all over Germany that these are also fairly easy to have maintained and because of the parts it uses also easily repaired. But again, that might be because i'm in Germany.
I know in the USA they're apparently more expensive to maintain, no idea about the UK

Harry: you never miss a beat in your videos, and I cannot thank you enough.
