In a bid to reduce oil consumption on our Daihatsu Charade (Cuore/Mira) L251, we try a Wynn's oil flush. @misshubnut does the work as it is her car after all.

Can't see a logical reason for anyone to 'hate' that Charade. I think its commendable the effort that's been put into sorting it out/keeping it on the road. Keep up the good work - and all the best in the driving test. :)
Yeah I'm not sure why someone would hate chemmy. I know there are people who are of the "it's not worth it just throw it away" mentality though, Sure it's never going to be worth tens of thousands even if it's rare but why should that matter.
*tries not to descend into a rant about people buying cars with intention of using them as an "investment"*
@ratchetfox8111 I think the general argument against Chemmy was she was not worth putting another engine in, which is fair from an entirely logical point of view, car probably was worthless with a bad engine and it probably coat what the car was worth to put another one in.
But like many things it can have emotional meaning beyond just being a pile of steel and plastic, miss hub nut loves it, who cares what it cost to fix if it makes her happy.
Amen mate.
It's not often you can use the word "overkill" on this channel, but then that funnel came along 😂
Love little Chemmy. This afternoon outside my local Tesco was a 56 reg Charade in silver. I said to my Wife just like Chemmy. Thanks again Ian & Carly
No need for that funnel. Just pour and hope for the best 😂
Also, completely agree with regards to keeping cars going rather than throwing away. All my friends and colleagues questioned why I today spent £1102.80 on a new brake servo for the Volvo S80 when I only bought the car for £1200, but I’d rather keep this car going, knowing it’s sorted and I don’t need to worry about it. Last few weeks I’ve drained and refilled the ATF fluid 5 times to get rid of the old brown stuff and it’s finally coming back red ish. I like the feeling that I’ve kept this car on the road when others would have scrapped it
There is a LOT to be said for "the devil you know". I am still hopeful I can get my BMW E60 to run again (ECU fault) - that's why I spent about GBP1800 on having the auto box repaired about two years ago, despite the >250,000 miles on it. The technicians who repaired it said it was in incredibly good order for its age and mileage.
"We don't talk about the 75" - Ian's PTSD defences kick in :-) Great video of some excellent tinkering, plus watching you two work together and having fun is smile-inducing.
I live in Thailand and bought a really mint looking Daihatsu Charade G10 which is 1983; it's fantastic!
I’m baffled
How can anyone hate this cutest of cars?
That oil filter I think is the same as is fitted to my bike.
Maybe because it is a PoS that should have been scrapped a long time ago.
Simply spending more money on buying a better car initially would save a lot of time, effort and money.
And if you costed the effort to get this working at a reasonably low labour rate a pretty decent car could have been purchased that didn't require constant maintenance. And no, it isn't a classic, just an average but unpopular Japanese supermini that was less popular than a Fiesta or Corsa (or Micra, Yaris, 205, Clio etc.).
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd So why are you watching !!!!!!
@@leeallen1407 I like the people, I like the road trips and I like some of the cars and I'm also interested to see what happens to the ones that I don't like so I can shout at the screen I told you so 🙂. There have been many cars that have passed through Mr Hubnut's hands that have been unmitigated disasters that should never have been purchased (Oltcit, Yugo, Multipla exhibits A,B &C ) and some that I was sad to see go like the Citroen C5. I realise there is video content to be produced but I'm pretty sure there would have been no engine swap on the Charade if Miss Hubnut hadn't taken a shine to it. And I'm pretty sure that more money will be spent in the long run than buying a better example up front would have cost.
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd It's a lot smaller than those models you cite, a lot rarer, and a fair bit more interesting. And this channel has virtually zero intersection with anything regarding buying a better example up front in order to save money.
@@hunchanchoc8418 You're right, it is a bit smaller and more interesting and I was a bit unfair (though far from a classic) but my comments regarding it being rubbish were referencing this particular example.
By the time this example is finished it will be like Trigger's broom and have very few original parts left.
I still think a "Free Myrtle" T Shirt would be timely. 🙂
I'll take Myrtle, she's free?

Excellent comedic content, that was probably the most entertainingly heart warming oil change ever done on youtube ever!
Heated hoodie sounds really good here in freezing cold Finland :) Heated seats are great feature in cars during this cold winter, but when you're out of the car, there's no heat coming from anywhere. Takes a lot of walking before body gets warm, so heated hoodie indeed sounds very comfortable.
Oh and nice oil change too. Ramps would create more space under the car for easier access ;)
I hate driving up ramps...
@@HubNut There is small and easy ramps avaiable to get like 15-20cm more room under the car.
But a selfmade of 2*6 planks works great to, 10cm is often enough.
Great to see you get back to some tinkering, my favourite videos by far. Nice return of the innuendos as well! Made me chuckle
Another cracking video both. A decent oil flush for an unknown engine with indeterminate history makes a lot of sense. Chemmy will be pleased. I'm not a fan of certain car haters as we are all different and have different likes. Decades ago I was criticised for liking the 2CV, the Ami 8 and the Dyane but I didn't care then and I don't care now. Chemmy is HubNut family and is very much worth it. Many thanks for sharing.
When Ian bought the Invacar I thought he was out of his mind, nowadays its easily my favourite car in the fleet, it looks ridiculously fun to drive. I can't see how you could hate such a cute thing as Chemmy, especially a car the owners have had the satisfaction of doing a whole engine swap on it with all the pride of ownership that brings!
A pint of diesel works just as nicely 😊
This is fabulous, MissHubNut crawling under chemmy, changing the oil and filter and keeping the conversion going. Marvellous 👍
Had the same thougt, it was a pleasant suprice, ine such a low car.
I'm watching that half full can of oil which Ian just put down and that Carly nearly backed into.
A real hubnut moment so close to happening ... 🤣🤣🤣
This why I like to carry out my own oil change. Refilled to full line on the dip stick and no more. I`ve seen garages over fill with oil, then you might get a over full message, but the garage doesn`t think about removing the excess oil. I recommend using one of the oil suction tanks that draws the old oil up via the dip stick. So easy, no excuse not to do it.
Flush can bugger up hydraulic timing chain tensioners! also when all the carbon - there won't be much as modern oils have detergents in them- is removed, you may get "rattle" from areas where build up has caused wear.
Actually most of these miraculous detergents just do nothing, except to your wallet: It gets thinner.
30000k+ oil change intervals can also buggar up the tensioners. But that's what the manufacturer wants you not to think.
That is what I was told years ago don't use flush. 😢
@martinkupka3575 regular oil changes along with quality oil filters aswell as oil, I use premium fuel in my cars. I change my oil every 5k 6 at a push
@@chucky2316 The guy at Car Care Nut channel says the 5K interval is too long, better to change every 3K
If you love a car, it doesn't matter what anyone thinks. Wynns is good stuff but I always use a cheap oil afterwards then drop it again after 500 miles as it just gets all the way round the engine.
I rebuilt the head on my Maxi, 2 weeks after passing my test in it.
Mention of Danny Hopkins reminded me of the white and grey 1963 Austin A40 Farina I donated to the Practical Classics cause (needed the room for yet another project!) back around the turn of the millennium when he was a staff writer. He did a few articles on it over a year or so. Nice chap, wonder if he remembers it.
My Citroën C1 is powered by a Daihatsu engine! The sound of 3 cylinders… marvellous. Some say it sounds like the engine is broken. They don’t know what they are talking about…
🚗💨🇯🇵🇫🇷
When miss hubnut said its steam coming from the engine, 😂😂😂😂. I would hope not.
Great video and actually made me laugh out loud 😂
Listening to experts, reading instructions and buying a funnel - what the devil is going on here.........?
I really wouldnt use engine flush in any engine particularly if it has hydraulic tappets Ive seen to many of them go south on vauxhalls where people believe thinning the old oil down by basically adding kerosene to the engine and increasing the engijne oil level and pressure, which could blow oil seals, does some good in flushing out the engine, much better to flush it with engine oil to the correcdt level and change the oil again after a good run.
I was just about to type the same thing!
I used a flush on a neglected high mileage Kia engine... dislodged crap which got into a hydraulic lifter...ran fine but damn annoying!
That oil filter is pretty much the same size as some made for ride on lawnmower engines. Daihatsu actually did build a 3 cylinder diesel engine for Briggs And Stratton for some commercial ride on lawnmowers and wouldn't be surprised its built off one of the car petrol engines.
If it burns oil without smoke just class it as a racing engine capable of sustained high speed use 🙂.
I've never understood why some cars just use oil but neither seem to leak or burn it: my BMW with an M54 engine is like that.
Or just say it’s a VM Motori diesel. They all do it from new anyway.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍 another job well done brilliant
i flushed my 1.9 tdi pd last week , i thought after almost 27 years service it may need one!, but i don't feel much difference TBH, just seems to run the same as ever. i hope your flush is more successful
Love the vw 1.9 tdi, I have two, one on 267,000 miles and the other on 189,000. Both 130bhp and both feel the same, never touched inside, service every 6000, and both do 45/55 mpg.
That’s because the damage is already done. Should be done every couple of years, not couple of decades.
amazingly good engines mine is th AAZ fron 97 110 bph@@S.and.K-Works
I did see one of the L251'a in North Devon the other day. Anytime I see one it's reminds me of you.
Hi @HubNut, I've just watched your video and heard you mention Rustival. Sounds great fun, so I've booked a ticket for my wife and I to display my new (2020) Daihatsu Hijet Cargo kei car/van. Can't wait to see what everyone brings with them. Hope to see you on the day. Can't wait! 😊👍
YES!
If the engine won't start stick some tape over the rev counter and nobody will notice.
Hi again Mr and Mrs Hubnut, David here from Tasmania again with yet another hint for you both. Can you for goodness sake, please put something on the concrete floor before diving underneath any car. As soon as I saw Carly getting down on that rough concrete I was sure that when she came back out, that brand new heated jacket would be ruined. you could hear it scraping on the concrete. Your floor certainly isn't the smoothest bit of concrete around. I have found that even an old piece of "Masonite" is excellent for getting under cars, as the shiny side is so smooth, it makes it very easy to glide in and out (there's an innuendo). Other than that, an old blanket or tarp, is far far better that trying to work on bare concrete. You have both done a great job on Chemmy, brings back memories of my full bare metal restoration of my Hillman Imp Sport, and Hillman Husky. Fun times. Especially when stripping paint off the Imp when every day for 5 days was over 35deg C. in South Australia. Oh joy. Cheers David
Toasties socks and hoodie, sounds great for standing at the footy/rugby match.
I’ve got myself a 2014 Suzuki Alto, really reliable and in 35k miles it’s only needed a clutch. Really enjoy Charade tinkering content.
More innuendo than a box of Spanish suppositories, great fun video peeps!
Squee! Such a cute little oil filter!
We all know Elly is more than a car. She is more like a pet!🎉
Washer fluid cap/flap: lost the one for my Charade, the “hinge” wore out, found that a lid from a roll of 35mm film, or was it a cap from a meds bottle, fitted perfectly.
The filter is about the same size as a genuine NH filter for the 2.0 ISM indirect injection diesel engines. These are about 45hp and I have two that have done 7500 hours each. Changed the oil and filter on one last week. 7500 hours at an average of 35mph is equivalent to 262,000 miles. Oil changed at the equivalent of every 7500 miles since new in 2002.
This episode should have been called Carry On Chemmy. Nice work, Miss HubNut 👍
All my favourite people are coming, love chops
Well I think it is great that you are keeping chemy going. Long may it continue.
Love the content as always. Any more miss hubnut videos? Look forward to the next.
Bacon Jam!!!
Nice work and hoodies.
Heated hoodies are the schizzle, I have one that I bought during my tradie days. Beanies, and baseball caps with a built in head torch as also useful!
I'm personally skeptical of using chemical engine flushes in modern Japanese cars. I buy two containers of oil when doing an oil change. Decent stuff to put in the car, and cheaper stuff to flush the engine with, while the sump bung is still out.
I have had success with chemical fuel injector cleaner. My now sadly deceased Honda Fit wasn't as economical as it should have been. Running a tank of fuel with fuel injector cleaner in it definitely made the Fit a lot more economical.
Why would anyone hate that little Charade? Mad. Much nicer than my rusting Yaris. My local garage always uses engine oil flush when changing oil.
mullet is coming along nicely
Thanks for sharing, awesome 👍
I love the lubrication innuendo :)
I use a synthetic grease on some of my electro-mechanical repairs: I get embarrassed saying the product's name - "Superlube"....
Comedy Gold Ian & Carly, start in gear & still put it in the vid.
just the Hubnut fam ❤
Cannot wait for Rustival!
Just be very cautious about doing a engine flush, I once bought a car off a workmate ( Vauxhall Cavalier) who do that just before I bought the car off him.. the wife was saying the oil light was flicking on and off at times as she used the car I did check level and it was slightly down showing 3/4 of the stick but not enough to worry me, but i topped it up anyway I assumed it was a dodgy connection..found out what the issue was a week later at 5am on the M25 driving to the airport with the family in the car..although it was flicking on and off on the trip..at about 40 miles into the trip at 70mph the light came on solid and within 200 yards of trying to slow down and pull over the engine seized and threw two rods though the engine case..what had happened was the engine flush had loosened the carbon and blocked the oil strainer mesh...
I love the contrast = you are waxing lyrical about heated woodies and I am coping nicely with a 36C day.
Was about that when I went to work in Perth too.
How about a close-up of the washer cap or whatever it is that's in a unhappy state. There might be an alternate out there somewhere.
Welcome to the Double entendre club otherwise known as... what a fantastic vlog Ian and Carly lol you both get better.. when I met you last year lol you were perfect for each other 😂 it just gets better what a great oil change ...lol who needs a pottery wheel.....😮 ,you only need a dip stick and lub 😮.... stay safe excellent as ever 😅
Very much looking forward to Rustival… if the van makes the road trip!
If the flushing does its job well, it could possibly increase its thirst for oil. Back in the day when old Fordson Majors and diesel David Browns ruled the world and before high detergent oils, engine ran OK. That is until diesel specific high detergent oil was introduced and run in those sludge’d up and dirty ringed old engines. These were cleaned up rather too efficiently and the released dirt and sludge would sometimes block oil ways in the engines and they seized up. Otherwise they cleaned the rings, which were rather worn and they consumed oil like alchies.
another great video has always Ian and miss hubnut and hublets and hubmutts 👍
Blimy 2 minutes; that was good timing 😂😂
morris lubricants - well reccommended!
Rustival is going to be good with the amount of you tubers there i follow going as well as your selfs coming i booked on my self so over 600 cars just in the two areas i am well looking forward to it
Crabbers is coming.... Maybe I can get another picture with me looking not too scared this time 😂😂
So looking forward to Rustival now, got my banner for the channel already in the back of the car already.
Great little tinkering Video Ian and Carly.
Never heard of heated hoodies before, cool!
Had a MK4 astra with a bodged dash cluster got a replacement and found out the ECU was knackered
Lol that funnel that's great
Gurrrrr, why does TH-cam unsubscribe people! , but I digress, I'll have to look into the hoodie👍
I wish I could find a good woman like Mrs Hubnut, not afraid to dive in and get her hands dirty servicing her car😊
You don't have to justify anything when you find a car you love and want to keep it on the road.
On the heated clothing, there was a chap who used to attend a collectors' event some forty years ago in a white VW Beetle that had never seen a wash (ever) but he used to wear a heated leather biker's jacket to said event. There was always a smell of petrochemicals about him.
Pre lube filter a little so it allows elements in filter to be pre wetted and it reduced chances of poor oil flow on first startup
That's good stuff I used to use all the time
Hahahaha! Do love the innuendo 😂😂
Do they have a PCV valve or a Crankcase breather that we need to clean?
As you said, no need to justify it.. I honestly think that repairing and keeping an older car on the road is far better than simply disposing of them and buying new for a multitude of reasons!
Just a quick tip, diesel is a wonderful flushing agent.. 500ml or so depending on the oil capacity works wonders on sludge and gumming up.
Will it free-up stuck oil control rings?
I have a very bright yellow Kia picanto 1.1 , 5w30 is recommended but I put 10w40 in the old girl , that could help with your oil consumption Ian
10w40 tends to make these engines worse rather than better sadly.
The oil filter looks larger than the one on a modern 2.5 Subaru engine!
Nice video, thanks. Have either of you ever thought about maybe wearing overalls whist working on your cars?
I'm not a fan of them. I like my work trousers and jacket. Naturally, I was wearing the wrong trousers...
My son’s name is Fox…. He’s currently on a ski trip in Italy. 🥶 Wish I’d bought him one. 😂
Buys a funnel then dribbles stuff all over the engine when removing it 😅 love it!
Very HubNut...
@@HubNut Very much so 😅 it's what we come here for!
Charade negativity? Why? You work together so well. Love the progress.
I wonder how long it will be before funnel is lost in the unit ? .
I have a jam jar lid on my washer fluid bottle...
I will be at the rustival in my 2008 ford galaxy.
I use that same oil filter in my gasoline powered tooth brush.
Nobody else changes the engines on them because you can guarantee it will be the same or worse, even a brand new one will do the same after a few miles, but as you say it is personal choice, your time, your money, so go for it.
Do you have proof that a brand new one will do the same after a few miles? For what reason?
I flushed my GT6 engine once and the main crankshaft seal, behind the flywheel started leaking badly. Since then I have never flushed an engine again.
Nice video. Did you get the hoodies the wrong way round? Ian's looks a little small and I think the coral coloured one would suit him 😉
Turns out they're both the same size. Went a bit HubNut there...
The innuendo was strong in this video. When you looked at camera an grinned Ian had me bad laughing. Carly you had that hoodie dirty in minutes. All good
It was like reading a Viz mag back in the day - fnar fnar - Eh readers.
@@neilgent1595 Nice one 😂😂
Great content your hair reminds me of the 1980s
I was about to mention that barbers are now back working after covid restrictions have been lifted LOL. Seriously though, short hair and face fungus suits you far better.
To my ears, the engine runs quite sweet. I've never done a oil flush, but many years I used a oil additive with every oilchange. DancoOil Tec2000. I've used on motorcycles, diesel- and petrolcars. It's not like the teflonstuff. It's more a extreme lubricant. It goes in all engines, but don't use it in gearboxes.
Ah, so this is the "Future video" you were talking about Ian.
Love the outro/
Ian i would have used a mann or a mahle filter if at all possible. Uft is up there with a fram in my opinion. I wouldnt entertain a filter like that
Miss hubnut, you never forget your 1st car.
last time a saw a car guy rocking a mullet was derek from vice grip garage,
An inspiration in so many ways. I have rather less talent...
If I was much less modest, I'd say you'd read a recent comment of mine suggesting the use of heated clothing and decided to take a sponsorship from such a clothing company, but I suspect it's more likely a coincidence 😂
When do we get HubNut heated hoodies in the merch store? 🤔🤣
I did this myself 6 months ago. The video on my channel is only 10 minutes as it was a last minute decision to video it. It worked really well. But then my car went into limp home mode 2 months later. 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️ Hope it works better for you.
Let's hope so!
