I'm learning Portuguese and hope to go to Terceira Portugal in 2024 (my mom was born and raised there). If I accidently use an informal greeting, would someone generally be offended?..there seems to be a lot of variations in the greetings, so I'm worried I'll get them mixed up ^^;
I don’t think anyone would be offended if you greeted them even if an informal way. However you can simply say, bom dia, boa tarde or boa noite, depending on time of day. Those are the standard greetings, so you’ll be safe with that 👍🏽
William Costa just as “how are you doing” and “how is it that you’re doing” has the same meaning, the same applies here. More often than not the Portuguese will throw in a “é que” in a question although it’s not necessary.
@@benedict8720 We have a lot of sentences like that. O que é que estás a fazer, José?- José is my name by the way. O que estás a fazer, Maria? One is short, and the other one is long. Como estás? Como é que estás? This also applies in French Long and short questions. You can choose which one you like the most.
Aqui em Belo Horizonte (MG, Brasil), a gente fala: "Vou fazer isso e, se pá, consigo um bônus." O 'se pá' significa algo como 'talvez', 'se der certo'. 🙂

Você, é para situações mais formais, mas algumas pessoas acham ofensivo e preferem “o senhor” ou “a senhora”. Vocês é plural, e pode ser usado em qualquer situação, mas se para uma situação mais formal “os senhores” é preferível
Olá Mona 👋🏽 sorry about that - no one has ever told me that, so I guess I wasn’t as careful as I could’ve been 😅 The words ending in “ao” like “então” Will always have a ‘til’ accent over the ‘a’ (a curvy line, not a straight one). We often don’t bother with the shape of the accents too much as other Portuguese would know what we mean, but in this context I should surely be more cautious. Hope this helps a little.
