    Hi. I just discovered your channel yesterday and it is very helpful. I will be visiting Portugal next year May! I have partial Portuguese ancestry from Azores, Lisbon, and Guarda based on genetic cousin matches. I speak conversational Italian and French and I used to speak nearly fluent Spanish. I think Portuguese will be challenging but I am eager to learn! I also think I will revert to speaking Italian or Spanish if I don’t know how to say something in Portuguese. When I was in Italy I would occasionally use Spanish words as I didn’t know the word in Italian! But I was understood.

    • @portuguesewithcarla
      @portuguesewithcarla  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you like our channel 😊 it’s true that knowing other Latin based languages can make it a bit confusing as there are similarities but also significant differences that sometimes we don’t expect to find. On the other hand, it will also come in handy when learning Portuguese given the fact that some of the vocabulary is similar or the same! Also there’s many aspects in common when it comes to grammar 😀
      My advice to anyone visiting Portugal is to try and speak as much Portuguese as possible (this will win you some brownie points with the natives) and any words you don’t know refer back to your other Latin based languages - it doesn’t work all the time, but it works often enough 😁 Have an amazing time in Portugal 🤗

    • @portuguesewithcarla
      @portuguesewithcarla  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! 😃 Well, "Por favor" translates directly to "please" in English.
      "Se faz favor" translates roughly to "would you be so kind" or "if you please."
      However, the natives use both expressions interchangeably to make polite requests.

    Question: Does it matter which one i choose to learn when it comes to being understood the best in both countries? In Scandinavia for instance i think it's best to pick Norwegian (even tho im Swedish) if you wanna understand all the Scandinavian languages the best.

    • @portuguesewithcarla
      @portuguesewithcarla  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@zoom5024 Portuguese people are more accustomed with the Brazilian accents and expressions than the Brazilians with the Portuguese accents and expressions. So for you to be understood by both countries, maybe the Brazilian variant is the best option. However, if you only focus on the Brazilian one you’ll have a hard time understanding Portugal’s Portuguese. It really is a decision you have to make - maybe consider where you’ll visit more often ☺️

They are both forms of the Imperative Mode, but desculpe follows the the pronouns você, o senhor or a senhora which may be omitted. Desculpa follows the pronoun tu. Hope this helps 🙂

My name is Eliana, I'm a 33-year-old Brazilian English teacher, I'm currently living in Japan, and I'm looking for another woman whose first language is English to have conversations through Zoom with for us to practice speaking each other's languages. We can read books and discuss them or talk about topics of our interest. I like to talk about cultures, self-development, pets, cooking, hobbies, friendships, family, movies, songs, and etc. We can do calls once a week, maybe, and divide them into 2 parts, one for English and one for Portuguese. I really look forward to building a good friendship with my conversation partner. If you're interested, please let let me know replying to this comment and I'll get in touch with you. ☺️
