Underrated ! He stood in and took a lot of hits to complete so many passes as well ! He was a smart quarterback and a leader!

The most underrated and beloved quarterback ever. I wish he was the bears coach.

he's retired and happy, having a real "Job" was never one of his goals. i don't think he ever aspired to be "Important" or famous, he just was because he was a Winner he spread the ball to all of his teammates and the O-Line were his best friends.

25-0 as a starter 1984-1987. Still an NFL record for most consecutive winning starts. The second best I'd seen after Joe Montana. Genius reader of defenses. Great passer. Tough as nails. Smarter than everyone in the room. Never knew when he was beaten either. A winner.

If Jimmy Mac had just stayed healthy, he could have had a Hall of Fame career. Before the injuries started piling in in 1984, he had all the physical tools (mobility, good arm, accuracy) coming out of College and we all know smart he was. A shame.

Peyton Manning actually is the new leader as far as replicas of wins in a row

I remember the Chargers trading for Mac & basically saying that they didn’t care how he acted because he had such an awesome record as a starter. But I can’t find much about Mac clashing with Chargers HC Dan Henning which caused his exit there. Would love to find just one interview with a Chargers coach explaining why they moved off him so quickly. I have a feeling it was that Mac liked to prepare on his own vs intense meetings to script the game plans. Mac was better with a hands off coach like Ditka & later Buddy Ryan with the Eagles.

I was born in Provo. Non-LDS. Grew up in CA. I loved how he was that punk. And how he did what he needed to graduate BYU and pay homage. Would love to meet that dude!

If the Bears had like a coach who understood his Maverick ways, like a Phil Jackson, he woulda been one of the greats. For us Bears fans he was the greatest.

If the Bears had a balanced attack, Mac would have been in the HOF.
Stat geeks with no eyes have too much to say. Absolute pleasure watching this footage.

Mac was the best Qb in bears history. If Ditka was even a half way decent coach, the bears would have won at least 3 Super Bowls

      McMahon couldn't stay healthy.

    • @musicman76enator

If Buddy Ryan had stayed past the 85 season, then the Bears would have easily won 3 maybe even 4 more Super Bowls. They could have done it consecutively. That would have been a dynasty. Ditka tried taking all the credit; he let the brief success get to his head. Because of this, the Bears just couldn't win, let alone get back to, more Super Bowls...and of course it was a huge mistake to get rid of McMahon after the 88 season.

@@eazye519 I read he was a binge drinker and the hangovers got to him after a while. Because of this he asked to opt out so he could recover from the hangovers.

Today where QBs don’t get hit (nor slammed after a play), McMahon’s leadership, mechanics & abilities would put him in the Hall of Fame with many rings along the way.

Of all of Mad Mac’s seasons in Chicago, I think 1987 was his most impressive year; the way he, first of all, came back from shoulder surgery and then the string of incredible come from behind, last minute wins that he engineered almost singlehandedly. The Monday Night game vs. Denver should have been another win for McMahon (instead of snapping his 25 game winning streak as a starter) but the Defense choked and Perry fumbled at the goal line...and Butler missed a couple of extra points, IIRC. Anyways, Mac was like a magician in the strike shortened season, calling his own plays in the No-Huddle Offense; the Dude was awesome. 1987 - to me - is where Jim McMahon really proved that he was one of the best Quarterbacks of the 1980s (up there with Montana, Marino, Elway, Kosar, Simms, O’Brien, etc.).

I don't remember what game or what year it was, but somewhere out there is footage of him throwing from the goal line to the opposite 20 for a reception. Hell of an arm.

If he just had stayed healthy and slid more the Bears would have had at least one more Super Bowl. When he started, the Bears won. He may have had average stats or even more interceptions than TD's some games, but the team still won. It's so sad that again his body couldn''t take the hits especially playing on that astro turf. That Charles Martin hit killed the 86 season. The Bears may have won and the defense actually played better than the 85 team, but there was no QB that could have taken on the Giants. Flutie wasn't it. In 87 that the Bears best chance the Bears had a 14-0 lead against the Redskins in the playoffs and the team just stalled. That defense held that team together between 84 to 88. If McMahon had again just stayed healthy, he would have had at least 2 Super Bowls.

Jim McMahon has brought the bears a better luck from 1983-1988 until when McMahon was trade from Chicago bears to the San Diego chargers (LA Chargers) then 1989 was a terrible season for the bears without Jim McMahon. And of course Mike tomsack didn't help the bears win a 1989 seasons
