McMahon was a very underrated quarterback. The only reason he didn't have more success was because of injuries. And there has never been a more entertaining team to watch than those Bears.
My Dad used to call him, “A great quarterback who broke too easily.” In hindsight, this was entirely untrue. His style of play, bad-boy reputation & the Bears’ penchant for destroying their opponent’s quarterback(s) placed a gigantic, league-wide target on McMahon’s back (and front). He took a merciless beating. Oh, what could have been for the ‘86, ‘87 or ‘88 Bears had McMahon been healthy for the entire season!
@@nurserock77 All true. And that piece of shit Charles Martin of the Green Bay Packers bodyslamming McMahon well after the play was over likely cost the Bears a 2nd Superbowl.
Jim is the reason i became a Bears fan. Headbutting his linemen after scoring, something Ditka told him Not to do. He continued and should take some responsibility, for his condition currently.
He was an all out winner. Obviously, he didn't do what Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods did but he was the same kind of winner. He made everyone else better and they loved him.
McMahon and many other ex players spoke out on the concussion brain injuries .Those players, often played in tremendous pain. They seemed to still do incredible feats on the field - entertaining thousands in those stadiums back then and millions now on video.I never get tired of seeing reruns of their games. CERTAINLY they didn't get - and haven't gotten what they were worth, and that's sadistically tragic.
Being a native of N-Illinois, I grew-up being a *Chicago 🐻 Bears* fan. When Jim 'Mad Mac' McMahon ('Son of Bear' in ancient Irish) came to the Bears we were all thrilled! Chicago isn't known for its Offence or for having a good QB. We are well known for having the opposite, in fact. After we realized just what a football superstar and individualist he was, we loved him even more. So, I respect this great man in every way. I too have had several concussions through boxing as well as football. But, I also have a birth defect; a conjoined nerve route, which causes me extreme pain and immobility. I had no clue that marijuana had medical applications. After hearing 'Mad Mac' speak on the efficacy of medical marijuana several years ago, I have been using it ever since. Although it helps with the pain from the concussions and the defect, I'm still pretty much useless. Oh well, we have to play the hand we are given. God Bless you 'Mad Mac', you were our hero on the gridiron and remain so in life as well!
God bless him. Been a bears fan since 5 years old. Tattooed on my left shoulder 85 bears. There will never be a team to match those guys. Hang in there mac.
I have to totally agree with you on that one. McMahon's career pretty much went down hill from that point. We suffered as Packer fans through all the mediocrity of the team while Starr was coaching. Then we glimmers of hope when Lynn Dickey was tossing the ball to Lofton and Jefferson. Then things really got ugly and this episode was the absolute low point.
And to add insult to injury, Martin was only fined $5000 for that incident. Rozelle fined McMahon $15000 for wearing the Adidas headband the previous year.
Very vividly remembering him from back in the day, especially '85, it seems so odd to see him now as an older gentleman. Especially when I now have children of my own who are older than I was then. Jesus, time does not stop for anyone. Remember, for those who do, that stupid video the '85 Bears made? It was on all the time. There were even a number of parodies - e.g., "Wild Cats", and (my favorite) SNL's "We Are The Kickers", not to mention all the schools and offices that made their own - to that damn thing.
I loved the game and played through my high school days, I had my " bell rung " a few times, we would wait a few plays and go back in. My son will never play football. Its just not worth damaging your most important asset.
I'm a child of the 80's and McMahon was my hero. In fact, I'm a Vikings fan to this day because he was traded to them. Dementia is very sad and I really feel for Jim and his loved ones, they have a long road ahead of them. On a side note, I can't stand this interviewer. I can't believe they go to school and get paid all that money for obvious, lay-up questions. C'mon make it a little more interesting for us.
I wonder how much these NFL doctors were on for telling a concussed player "Hey follow my finger, where are you, whats your name, ok your fine get back in their.
At time-mark 3:13, George Jamison, #58, linebacker, for the Detroit Lions; George used-to live down-the-hall, from-me, at Calhoun Hall, at the University of Cincinnati.
Steve McMIchael once said that Jim thought he was a defensive guy, tough guy, and his sorry butt got tore up. The astroturf didn't help, but if he would have slid on his scrambles he would had more starts with the Bears, but his body just couldn't handle the hits and like that interview it came back to bite him years later.
That Soldier Field Astroturf tore him up. That Charles Martin body slam made it everything worse. The fact that he didn't slide and was hurt way too much. Now he's paying for it long after retirement. When Jim dies, most likely he will have CTE if in his will he chooses to do so. It's not going to be a great shock. That's the price you play for contact sports like MMA. Hockey, and football. There's people who will get it and some don't, but still have chronic injuries. It really is the opposite of short term pain for long term gain for those players it's short term gain for long term pain. Also Charles Martin died in 2005.
Reality check. If a boxer steps up and said "I've got dementia from the sport I played, where's my money?" They'd be laughed out of the room. What's the difference between boxing and football? Both are vicious, brutal, aggressive, violent, dangerous jobs. That's why you get the big bucks to do it.
canucturbo2224 Danger is not a part of the game. Danger IS the game. This is all part of the growing sickness in America. Everybody needs to be taken care of instead of look out for themselves. Football is dead. It will whimper on for another decade or two but the lawsuits will kill it. All part of the plan to turn the populace into a flock of bleating sheep instead of individuals. btw I disagree with your assessment of the brutality of boxing. The sport is designed around landing blows to your opponents head. In less than 1 year there will be a lawsuit by some boxer punching bag who threw all his money down the drain and lives on the street. He'll be claiming he's a moron because of the sport and demanding he be compensated. Money for nothing is the new America.
canucturbo2224 You realize, I hope, that once the money gets flowing, everyone (afflicted or not) will lawyer up. Do you think the NFL will survive when the entire retired roster shows up with their hands out? Just more of the same--down is the new up, no means yes. Football and Boxing are vicious, brutal dangerous sports. That spectacle of talent balanced against danger is why we bother to watch. Remove the danger and you've got basketball. Do you want more basketball or do you want the thrill of body vs body conflict on a field of battle? Don't kid yourself that you can remove the danger and injuries from a contact sport. You can't. Makes no sense. "Get out there and knock the shit outta that guy...but watch out for his head!" See how that doesn't make any sense? Never mind, cucumberturbo. You just press on with your magical little world. Enjoy your football with all the "how to hit the other guy" regulations. All part of the emasculation of our culture. Sports where individualism is displayed need to be eliminated. These are just the first steps.
Just shows where the sports reside. They reside in the pocketbooks of the players instead of their hearts. I want to watch someone play a sport not make money.
Getting your bell rung used to be a right of passage for a football player. Getting knocked out used to be out for a series or two and back in the game. I am glad we know more about concussions now but a part of me says you get paid very well to take that risk nowadays however the former players never knew the dangers like today’s do therefore they do deserve healthcare and money for their suffering.
Charles Martin of the Packers should have banned for life in the NFL and a loss his retirement from the NFL and even his NFL health insurance and fined heavily, and charges should been filed for Premeditated aggregated assulalt on Jim with The Police and put in Jail and should searved a few years in jail that's my option BECOUSE head injuries never go away McMahon is still suffering from Martin's premeditated assault with amnesia and will affect him and his his family for rest of his life....
Interesting topic; but are these not the stupidest questions in interview history? This guy with Mad Mac is a joke- "How sad does it make you feel-" are you kidding me!!
pads make it more dangerous because you can put ten times more force in hiring someone with pads. and with out pads your brain tells you not to hit someone as hard as you can.
Hmmmm, he says he already knew all the other parts of the body may get injured but some how he acts as if he doesn't know you can get a head injury playing football. That's just common sense information that any part of the body including your head can get injured playing football. What Jim said makes about as much sense as if a race car driver were to say he didn't know he can possibly crash and die moving at 200 miles a hour.
This lawsuit is ludicrious. It's as bad as cigarette smokers suing the tobacco companies for lung cancer. I couldn't stand this arrogant ass when he played, although he seems to have finally grown up. I'm sorry for his health woes, but football always has and always will be a very dangerous sport. Play or don't
gingerchipper Tobacco companies knowingly hid the effects of their products until well into the 1980s.. And went so far as to make claims that doctors endorsed light cigarettes as healthy alternatives. It was proven that farmers dope the tobacco with more nicotine to keep people addicted. Politicians keep them legal and available. The government subsidizes heroin-level addictive poison and you think someone suing who got sick, but couldn't quit, is unwarranted?
Those days are long gone home-boy... Favre owed Da-Bears and Rodgers is 7-1....? we're 4 games behind in the all time series and we are gonna zoom by and leave you in the dust...

@@nurserock77 Agreed 100%! I used to love watching him play! He made it so much fun.
My fav
Back in the day. Concussions cleared by half-time.
All the way up to the early-mid 2000s.
Jim is the reason i became a Bears fan. Headbutting his linemen after scoring, something Ditka told him Not to do. He continued and should take some responsibility, for his condition currently.
I love McMahon but I wholeheartedly agree with your last statement, especially. ;)
He was an all out winner. Obviously, he didn't do what Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods did but he was the same kind of winner. He made everyone else better and they loved him.

Charles Martin should have been thrown out of the NFL for that!!
He's dead now anyway.

I must say that in my 40+ years of being a Packer fan, that Charles Martin incident was the lowest, darkest moment. It still makes me cringe today.

Darryl D. Ruggs ick
Your an idiot.
Gregg was the coach then.
And to add insult to injury, Martin was only fined $5000 for that incident. Rozelle fined McMahon $15000 for wearing the Adidas headband the previous year.
mike wiitala yes- it was a cheap move and he was never the same after.
Not a bears fan. But loved this guy.
You watch the 30 for 30, you find out a misalignment in Jim's neck was blocking the flow of spinal fluid and was causing his terrible headaches
