    Hello TrollForge, Sometimes a mag will work up to about half throttle, then crap out.
    people think that mags don't go bad but they do. not knowing mags go bad, they think
    its the carb. dad put a new carb on his 7 HP Troy-Bilt tiller only to be rewarded by the
    problem still there. I hooked an auto ign. coil to a hot-shot battery and engines points
    engine ran like a charm full throttle. Then I used mags low side to provide current for
    the ignition coil. The wire from mag to points went to ign. coil. from coil to points and
    no battery needed, gives a mutha of a spark as well.

    I leave the points and condenser intact and just cut the wire going to the condenser. It will not hurt anything and the points plunger will always have pressure on i and it will n ever fall out. . Also on some of these briggs and stratton engines you can find used electronic ignition coils on ebay, instead of using the magnetron or atom or other electronic ignition conversion kits.

    The first time I took one of these motors apart I was 6 yeas old and my dad was mad as hell because I tore up the lawnmower but then I put it back together and I have done the same thing ever since.I hope you know half of what I know but your video shows that you only know less than half of what I know.

    • @trollforge
      @trollforge  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      gert frobe haha! My "Dad was as mad as hell" moment was when he came down stairs to find the remote control car he took 3 weeks to build ( in the hospital after his 2nd heart attack ) spread out piece by piece in front of me when I was 4. I found it again 2 years later, put it together without the instructions (which never made it home from the hospital) and had it working, in an afternoon. I never claimed to know more than you, I didn't argue with your other comments, I'm not a mechanic, but I am a trained machinist, and I do know about woodruff keys.

    • @gertfrobelives
      @gertfrobelives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you must know that the woodruf key from a B&S woodruff key is weak aluminun and will break as soon as the blade hits anything solid so it will save the motor.

Also clean/ polish the crankshaft before reinstalling the clutch to avoid the clutch squeal.

    I know this is an old video but I recently got an old 8HP B&S snowblower engine built in 1967 Model 170402 . It worked when I got it. I am currently cleaning it up and repainting it. I may upgrade to an electronic ignition system soon. I am on the look out for a air filter assembly as snow blowers don't need air cleaners . I do this as a hobby and enjoy learning new ideas from all the YT videos. I also bought some new decals to put on the engine when it's done. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it but I may find a use for it eventually. BTW these ignition coils prices have dropped considerably since you bought yours. Did you actually pay $69.00. I don't remember if I ever opened that side of the machine, so I have no idea of the belt size either... If you take a sewing tape measure and wrap it around the outside lip of both pulleys that will give you the belt length, and measure lip to lip on one pulley that will give you the belt width. I specify a sewing tape measure, because the measure around tight corners better than a carpenter's tape measure.

    • @trollforge
      @trollforge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Akiva Feinstein Sorry, I am not in the business, I don't have any catalogues. I believe the upgrade kit was sold for a range of displacements. If I remember correctly I bought the one for 5 - 8 HP engines, and again, if memory serves me right there was one for 3 - 5 HP beside it, I guess that would be what you want.

      @trollforge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jester jest sorry to be so long getting back to you but "Tis the Season". I'm not a small engine mechanic, just been tinkering with them most of my life. Generally speaking if you can pull it over and it will not start the problem is either fuel or spark. If you have no or very little (weak) spark this upgrade should solve your issue. If it is fuel I know there are a few videos on TH-cam on how to strip, clean, and reassemble a Briggs carb.

    a good video would be fabulous, if your cameraman could have held the damn thing still! I suffered from a lot of dizziness while watching this. had to take a break in fact:

    • @trollforge
      @trollforge  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry about that. The common misconception that TH-cam pays big money is a fallacy. At less than $50 a month getting a "cameraman" is impossible. If you suffer dizziness from watching video, you really should get your inner ears checked by a doctor. Visual clues are only supposed to be 50% of what makes you dizzy.

    • @iainmel1
      @iainmel1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there's a tinnitus problem as well. My point was that when watching a film posted by someone you haven't seen before, and the film quality's not so good, then a lot of people just switch off on the assumption (fallacious at times, I know) that the overall quality of the content is equally bad, walk on by and find something else to give them the information they need.
      I was not in any way assuming that you get a big fat paycheck out of youtubing, and really do appreciate the hard work put in by all you people for this. There are an awful lot of nutcases out there who seem to think that five minutes of information can be stretched out to a half hour video, and a half hour'd better than five minutes...... drive me nuts! By all means I'll listen to chatter, but it must be INTERESTING, like for example, your video. keep up the good work! hope to be looking at some more of your stuff in the not-too-distant future! Regards, Iain

    Really bad idea not to use a wrench to torque the flywheel back down. Very good chance your flywheel will come off and injure someone. They make a tool to go over the starter ratchet.

    • @trollforge

      A chance my flywheel will come off? I doubt it, hasn't happened in 30ish years of working on Briggs... And if you want to donate the $40 Cdn plus taxes and shipping, I will gladly buy a Briggs & Stratton Starter Clutch Wrench.

    Wow, I didn't realize how much that would cost. around 70 bucks eh? This was a great video, i don't consider it a waste of time at all, however, if I paid a hooker and things ended the way this video did, I'd expect a serious discount. LOL
    So if this is going on like yours was, where the thing would get hot and then jump spark into the head and cut your engine off and stay no start till it cooled off, AND!, you didn't have 70 bucks, Would it be a safe assumption that a guy could pull the wire off the plug, remove the side pull start cover , run a rubber hose Or heavy shrink wrap down the spark plug wire or maybe even coat it with silicone and put a rubber grommet where it comes out the top to keep it away from direct metal contact. shrink it all down if you had the shrink wrap tube, and put it all back and be good to go?
    is there any other noticeable difference in the way the engine runs performance wise or any other thing?
    I am just wondering if it's worth it really, I mean, I really like the idea but i am on a tight budget and I mess with these old lawn equipment all the time, I have a couple of Ariens 1970's tillers w/ the Tecumseh 7hp's and reverse , mid sixties edger, I just picked up a 72 mcLane also , and I have at least a Ton of Mini Bikes around here. all of which I pick up for dirty ass cheap.

      Neither did he bother to explain why the flywheel retainer has a seal in or which way the magneto is installed and why. He should have removed the spark plug to rotate the engine explain that removing the points and condenser is not required unless you scavenge the parts for another project. Judging by the jewelry that is most likely why he removed the parts. This guy is learning from other TH-camrs and then makes up his own. Give him credit for spending the time to make and post the videos. Just please do some research on how things work and include explanations while you are doing.
