    Thanks for the great tips! I had an old 5hp Briggs with points, and it wasn't firing. I pulled a coil off of a newer 5hp Briggs parts mower, slapped it on there, and it didn't work. The mounting holes were correct, but the curvature angle was wrong where it rides next to the flywheel(where you set the air gap). I really wanted to save time and money, so I used a grinder to change the angles of the new coil so it had the same shape as the old one. Much to my surprise it worked! Engine runs great again

      A nice save but it is 'too easy' the get the points working again with a points file and adjusting the point gap. 9 times out of 10 they just need cleaning.

    Like you said, I never had any problems with the points setup but the newer short blocks don't have the place for points so Magnetrons it is. And I want the bvane for cooling so the Magnetron takes all the confusion out of everything. Never knew about the yellow add-on but that's a neat deal. Good old 5-horse 'L' head. Pick me one!

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I like the points system too, I've never really had problems except for the usually needing to clean the points at random times. yeah i prefer having the cooling fin in too. They are hard to find the yellow add on, i got a couple that came with some NOS short blocks i got off ebay. I just got this one a couple months ago, doesn't smoke at all! Thanks for Watching!!!

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need the module if your engine had points and your using a coil made for points/condenser, if you replace the coil with the electronic ignition coil (magnetron) the module or points is no longer needed. Thanks for Watching!!!

    I've done pretty well with the atom and nova modules. There was one case where I used one of them (can's remember which it was) on a Briggs 5hp and it the timing was too advanced. Made it rough to start. Probably a knock off that wasn't quite right. Used a Briggs Magnetron and it was fine.

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way you can upgrade that to the electronic coil is to change the flywheel out to the newer style, i talked about this in a video on rebuilding a model 6B, the magnets are different on the older flywheels so the newer coils will not work, done tried it. Thanks for Watching!!!

  • @shanecorrigan1096

    Ok so I would like to switch aswell, I have 2 wires coming out of the points one going to the coil, then one going up somewhere near the governor leading up to the switches on the snow blower throotle, so I sorta got lost which wire do I cut?

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok you will connect the wire coming from the switch on the throttle directly to the coil, that would be the easiest way of doing that. and just cut the wires off at the points cover. Thanks for Watching!!!

      too bad they dont put the distance between the coil mounting post screws as that is where the problem is as flywheel on 2, 3, 3.5... 4? hp is smaller than the 5 HP engines so the coil is different... hole spacing for mount.

    The thin metal plates connected to the coil are not there to direct air anywhere! Their a part of the governor system on the Briggs!

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plate that attaches to the coil is stationary, these engines use internal governor parts, these are not air vane governors like push mower engines. Thanks for Watching!!!

  • @plusblood5101

    Actually these 5hp bs engines
    Have a huge flaw
    And thats not the ignition
    Matter of fact its the poorly
    Made fuel delivery
    For folks that are not familiar
    The carb mounted on the fuel
    Tank and the brass/plastic extension pipe sucks in fuel
    To the carb when the diaphram or membrane is in the mood
    As it ages and sits it gets
    Worse and once the screen is
    Plugged its all over
    But the spark usually survives
    So i would not worry too much
    About those points
    Its the fuel supply that is
    Really the cave mans idea
    Just my 2cents
