NicoB put it perfectly in his reviews, the game with lowest lows and the highest highs, the definition of a rollercoaster. My main problem is just that the first half of the story isn't that well focused, so much of it feels like you are just wandering without much purpose, and the dialogue of that part is also not the best. After you beat it, you sort of understand why everything is the way it is and it's hard to imagine the story as a whole working without going through the slow burn, it's just not that pleasant to through. That said, if it wasn't for that and some of the designs, this would be one of the greatest games of all time, the story, combat, the world, all of it is peak, it genuinely feels like the best of 90's JRPGs being made in a modern era, the sort of game you play, and you will never forget a single element of it for the rest of your life.
Thank you for finally providing me a way to put into words how I feel about this flawed from a critical standpoint yet favorite game of all time with the “Fuck you it’s a 10” rating. I don’t think there’s a better way to illustrate it.
Yes, this game has the best soundtrack of 2017. Don't let the popularity of Persona 5 and NieR Automata fool you. Those have great soundtracks, but they don't have the diversity of Xenoblade 2's soundtrack.
I started playing all XC games in the last 12 months. Including X.
XBC2 is my favorite. 400 hours in and about to start Torna. Amazing game.

The Jenga analogy for combat is a BRILLIANT description. As much as a love 3, 2 really does have the most fun combat
Zeke and Pandoria are such an awesome double act, I love badass goofball characters like Zeke and Pandy is a peppy sweetheart. Zeke's moveset specifically with Pandoria enhances his personality so much, Most characters calling out their moves constantly can be grating but I never tire of him shouting OVERLORD THUNDER BEEEEAM!!!! I can recite the words in time to the button presses on their lv 4 blade art. Eye of shining justice legit making Pandoria a monster in new game plus is a great touch after Morag kept taking shit to Zeke about thinking he had the most powerful blade.
The music is also phenomenal it's such a great experience.

Anybody there saw his Xenoblade 3 stream when he got to the ending? Would love to hear his thoughts on the end and the overall game. But he never uploaded the full playthrough to youtube, and didn't do a review either
That's the realest and most accurate Xenoblade 2 review I've ever watched, amazing work!
Definitely look up a guide for the battle system and some of the interface, it will save you a lot of time and frustration (I'd recommend Chuggaaconroy)
2 is a weird case for me. After 1 I was ecstatic to see where X went given it was an HD art direction of the first game and with mechs/breakable limbs on enemies I couldn't wait...and then I put it down after about 4 hours. One of the rare cases where the amount of stuff to choose and do overwhelmed me, though I want to find time to return. 2's trailer gets announced and I thought the more anime direction and designs looked offputting, so I was cautiously optimistic...yet I wound up putting in nearly 200 hours across 4 playthroughs
The gameplay, the sights, the music, it's all just plain great. The plot/characters did nothing for me with a few exceptions, but much like Octopath it is the gameplay that will keep me coming back for years to come...even with that stupid gacha system. Best of all, there's still an expansion to review...and it's even better

The fact that the characters from 2 are the most enduring, even after 3 shows how good the designs are. They're extremely high-fantasy, but that also makes them memorable and interesting- especially compared to the pared down "modern clothing" designs of 3.
Ever since Xenoblade X I've started having xenoblade releases almost as a holiday. The moment they come out, I disappear until the game has nothing more to offer. I hate to feel like a fanboy when talking about these games but there's nothing I can do about it. I can make you an hour long essay about all the problems in these games, some being so obviously apparent, yet my recomendation is always going to be "fuck you it's a 10". Hell, I don't even agree with all of the praise you gave 2 and I still think this way.
Love this game so much and so many moments and story beats have stick with me for years.

Absolutely wonderful review, agreed on almost every point and especially the conclusion. It's exactly what I came to when I was playing it (back before they put in the few QoL updates they added!) "It's a game with a bunch of flaws, that's somehow a masterpiece despite them."

For Better and (depending who you ask lol) worse, Xenoblade 2 changed everything for the series. I feel like love and respect for 2 has only grown overtime.
I think Xenoblade 2 did both good and bad. I think it's true that it did bring some fans that we could do without but that would have eventually happened anyway. 2 did more positive impact I feel and u only really look at it negatively from an online perspective which is just a percentage of fans regardless.
One you can't deny is how gorgeous it looks.... But I agree I preferred the Wii Xenoblade.

I went back to play 1 definitive edition for the first time after 2. I like the story of DE more i think, but 2 is still my favorite (even now). Gotta go back to Torna.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a alright game the story and gameplay is kinda eh in my opinion it's not as good as other RPG'S

You say that every character getting an arc rectifies a problem from the original, but I don't think it's a rectification, just a different story design. I personally think that the focus on Shulk lends that story to be more focused overall in turn making it more impactful in the big picture. Whereas I find the story of 2 tends to focus on the trees more than the forest. For me personally the only story beat that got me genuinely thrilled related entirely to what you mentioned about this game having certain relations with the original game. That part blew my mind, but it makes me feel like they made the whole game as a filler episode just to get that moment, to set up for a future game.
if u look at it like that then u can say the same for the first game being filler until klaus is shown at the end. Just like that the moment in 2 is just a tease for fans there's a reason why it goes by quickly + still more cutscene ever after. I agree with the analogy of the forest vs trees tho. It's a difference but I feel 2 did a better job with it decided to do than 1. What 1 focused on it did excellent on but it felt like the rest was taken for granted which made me feel similarly like u where it was filler even though I wholeheartedly did enjoy them
@@baked7423 not really since the climax of 1 is the climax of 1, whereas the climax of 2 is about a different game. But to each there own I was just giving my thoughts like he asked at the end :)

@@GhibliNova I mean the climax of 1 is a callback to gears so it's the same deal and nowadays some people play 2 -> 1 so 1 would be a callback to the 2 scene since both games are parallel stories so it's just how u look at it is all i was saying if u enjoyed 1's story more good on you :)

First of all, the character design slaps hard, in a good way, I love they went for the more "anime" style.

Really disliked this game. For negative stuff you mentioned, I agree all of them. But I really hated characters, the story and combat. The problem with the story is it got interesting after 70 hours when you reach the tortoise titan and that flying titan and the baddie revealed. But it got really good after 80 hours when you hit the bottom of the cloud sea and actual master plot reveals itself. XC franchise has fascinating main story. It is really solid science fiction story. But the problem of this game, it doesn't make the main plot the main thing throughout the game. The good part is not in the center. Until you reach the the good part I am talking about, story is all over the place. Thanks god they started the fix all the issues starting from torna expansion and it peaked with 3 and its expansion.
