I love smaller capacity bikes so when Suzuki released the sporty looking A2 licence friendly GSX250R I was very keen to have a crack at it. But is it any good? Stay tuned to find out!

Why does everyone get so worked up about weight? Its a 250. Its supposed to be a pooch. Ride it and have fun. Enjoy the cheap maintenance and fuel costs Doesn't matter if its a cbr...r3 duke. Ninja whatever none of them are fast..... Just have fun.

Because this bike, as good as it is objectively, makes a CBR300R feel exciting, light, and quick. It is underpowered and overweight. It’s a solid commuter/learner bike that will probably last forever and handle any kind of abuse, but it’s no small displacement sport bike.
@@mindspinn311 Yes. I have this bike. A 2019. Power is fine; but as stated it’s way overweight for the power. Now if the GSX 250R was around 350lbs dry, it would be a home run for a beginner bike. :)
I mean, comparing to other 250 models like from honda, yamaha, and kawasaki, and also KTM (even though its only in the asian market), The bike is still the slowest in it's class if i were to be honest
And i guess the indian made 250cc suzuki is still faster than the 250r
This bike is aimed at the younger rider, still learning, and as such is spot on. Looks great in Black

Seen this video just last week there and made me wanna go for one myself.. ended up going down to GS Motorcycles in Hillsborough (Northern Ireland) and bought one for myself and it's been an amazing experience so far.. such a good handling bike, nothing special powerwise but at the end of the day you just wanna get from A to B and back to A again as safe as possible and enjoy the ride and this bike is ideal for that even for experienced riders.. brakes are great too when they're broken in as mine has 1300 miles under it's belt.. would definitely recommend to anybody to even at least give it a test ride for the experience of this bike.. also this video is very educational, whereas you went through pretty much everything needed to know about the bike, etc and enjoyable to watch.. video audio doesn't do the sound any justice but still sounds nice even at that for what it is

It's nice to see these smaller capacity bikes making a comeback. Back in the late 80's it was all about RD/RG/CB/GPz 250s as a step up from the 125s and 90s for new riders. Seemed to me for quite some time recently that it was scooters that kids rode around on. Yes, we borrowed the girlfriends Suzuki Love or Honda Melody for a wet ride to the chippy but lads always had proper bikes.
..bring back the aprilia rs250 - surely one of the most intoxicating bikes ever made!

I have the 2018 Model of this Bike. I've noted the SAME issue you have regarding the Right Side Mirror.
I also LOVE the Instrument Panel-One of the things that attracted me to this machine.
I'm 68 Years old, and have owned DOZNS of Bikes during my life. MUCH to my surprise, this little Suzuki has the SMOOTHEST shifting Gearbox I have ever used on a Motorcycle!!!!
Though I DO have more than 50 Years of riding under my Belt, I chose this little Bike for its economy, ease of handling, and INCREDIBLE fuel Economy. I'm semi-retired and have a part time job. I live 11 Miles from work, and I bought this as a commuter. It is all the Bike I "need" at this point in my life. I bought this used with 2800 Miles on it for $3,000.00 USD

I used to have a 90s version of this bike in 2000 but in 125 version, 2 stroke fully faired. I think it was a GS 125 but jees it was quick. It had so much pull on it, you could thrash it in 1st, 2nd and third gear and it topped out around 94mph. That was then. It was lethal.

Hi TMF, Great review as always. I love the A2 videos you are doing and would really like to see a review of the CBR 500R as that is at the top end of A2 restriction. Hopefully you can make it happen!
I'm hoping too, I've had lots of requests, just down to whether I can get one to ride from the dealer/Honda UK...I'm working on it!
Also the cb500f, I had one as a loan bike the other week, it was great fun on roads through the south downs :)
At 15 years of age, my 1st full size motorcycle was a Yamaha DS6-B 2 stroke twin street bike. Another popular contemporary was the Suzuki X6 Hustler, a spiritual predecessor to the bike depicted in your review today. I (and dad) owned a series of mini bikes up to that point, including one that was licensed and state inspected for the road, although it wasn't authorized for expressways. Had plenty of 'ride time' on friends', neighbors' and family members' full size bikes too. Thanks for sharing once again.

My first thought as the video started was about how good and visible the dash was... With the gopro cameras, most bikes are very hard to read in a review. This one really is clear and visible. Looks like a nice little bike!

One for me perhaps - I'm a born-again biker, and my last Suzuki Sv650 was OK, but thinking of something smaller this time around.
I have inazuma 2015 and sv650 2017(bought this very week). If you are not chasing more power(like yzf-r25 and mt-07 yamaha line), the engine smoothness, reliability, comfort and engine character on suzuki unbeatable.

Nice review, just reading MCN website and read this "To be honest, when the invite came out I was hoping it was gunna be a Daytona and I was a bit disappointed when I read in MCN that it was going to be a Bobber-based Speedmaster. Interesting slight complaint in regard to the brakes. My first bike was a 1973 Honda CB 350 with drum brakes front & rear. I'm still here in one piece.

small capacity machines are a affordable way of owning a new machine.the roads are badly maintained and busy,these bikes will be getting enjoyed from more experienced riders as well as new
Great review but try the cbr500r too there is a bit more power there but the bike is a bit heavier with a slightly more upright riding style than the R3. I brought one last year and it a great way to learn about biking before heading to something like a Ducati Supersport.

I did my exam on a Kawasaki ER6 650cc. Then I bought a Suzuki V-strom 650, lovely bike. Now I own a Honda CBF1000 which is much faster at accellerating but not as fast as the difference in bhp. What I mostly like is that you don't have to change gear that often; ther's enough power to pull it from low speed in higher gears. And overtaking costs less time which is safer. The downside is that you'll reach license treathening speeds in no time.

My observations regarding the Brakes:
TOTALLY agree with you regarding the Rear Brake-even with three Grand now on the Clock, the rear Brake is a JOKE!
The Front Brake, at least on my Gixxer, is actually pretty Good, considering. I DID note that I have to pull the lever a bit harder than my previous Bikes, But I've adapted to it, and I instinctively pul it harder now. It DOES stop just fine when you keep these facts in mind. It also corners EXTREMELY well. I feel safer on this Suzuki in the Twisty's than I did on my Honda CB500X!
I believe the reason for 250 cc is the east asian markets where the costs of ownership (registration/insurance not sure which) rise rapidly with displacement, that's why Kawasaki still makes Ninja 250 along with Ninja 300, Honda makes CBR 250 along with CBR 300, why the CRF is 250 cc and not 300~400 like every youtube comment demands etc.
I'm not an expert or 100% sure but I believe I heard that reasoning enough times to believe it's true. Btw I love the idea of this bike, more than the competition to be honest, not sure if it's because it's the newest but I think Suzuki really hit the nail on the head with this little bike.
Leuff you are right , i live in Indonesia and the low cost offerings stop at 250cc . Asia has large motor cycle industries that they protect, so imports are heavily taxed with import duties. Makes me weep to see these beautiful bikes reviewed by TMF knowing I can't have one :(

For us as well in Greece it used to be the case but more so because this displacement was so popular abroad since we re a small market. For us the first big step is right above 300cc. Above that regirstration, insurance and annual circulation fee forms a significant step. The second step is some odd displacement size right above 785 never sure where excactly without checking (though incuranse has another intermediate step at 500cc) and above that its pretty much similar up to 1357cc (lol)!
I think this being 250 is due to the fact that Suzuki is kind of lazy with new designs. Most of their new bikes are heavily based on some old ones, this one, clearly inazuma 250. It's cost saving and proven technology, but uninspiring unfortunately
Here in malaysia 250cc is the highest capacity for small bike license or B2. Any higher you need to upgrade to B full.
Great review as ever, but for me this is 10bhp short on power and 20kg too heavy. Back in 1978, the Honda Superdream used to get lots of criticism for being an underpowered 250cc in a 400cc chassis. This Suzuki is heavier and slower.
Viewed in isolation I'm sure its a sweet bike, and its certainly competitively priced, but I can't help feeling disappointment at both this and the V Strom.
Fair do's - trust me when I rode on the back of my cousins 250cc SuperDream, it felt plenty fast enough!! (of course no gloves or helmet either in those days!!)....
Yeah they aren't inspiring bikes , problem is Suzuki have used that engine out of the inazuma thing .

The main reason the Japanese makers offer 250-400cc bikes is because in Japan you have to take an additional bike test to ride anything over 400cc, and it isn’t cheap to do all three bike tests, so most people don’t bother and stick to the 250-400 class. In any case the speed limit is 60km/h on dual carriageways and 100km/h on the highways, so 25-40 hp is enough for most people.

Yes, I would definitely prefer this bike to a bus pass! I assume that for example, a Honda 300R or Z400 would have more of an upright sitting position?
Awesome review, it certainly is a looker. I do wonder how it's going to go in the market when you can get bigger beginner bikes, such as ninja 300, CBR500, KTM 390 Duke, etc.

100hp is plenty. The Africa Twin is far from slow and it is a heavy bike with 90hp.

I got one brand new it was so quiet it sounded like a sowing machine, so i put a yoshimura on it. Problem solved. Great little machine needs a 15 tooth front sprocket off a drz400 that will correc speedometer
I use a Honda CBR 250 for my every day ride & are very economical to run ,Suzuki does look nice shame its down on the numbers.
Like to clarify, this is a sports tourer hence the lower power outputs, Suzuki have a gsxr 300 in development that should make about 35bhp and it will be a single cylinder, liquid cooled with a racing chassis, but I think it will take a few years to come out.

A Duke 250 makes about 30hp , weighs 160 wet ,has an upright riding posture and has a slipper clutch which would make it an ideal choice in that engine category for daily commute.
Can't argue with that! Not a sports bike though is it?
Yeahh , street bike ... for sports you'd have to go for an rc 200 or 390 .. but these are a lot cheaper in India though 😅 ..

My first learner bike,a Kawasaki KH 250 produced 28 hp back in 1980,surprised that the little gixer only gives 24!.I also can't see who this bike would be aimed at,I couldn't see many 125 riders who,on passing their test,going for it.
I really want this bike... Unfortunately though there is literally 0 resale value of it where i live
So buy a used one and save some $ yourself. Even the new ones are so much cheaper than the competition.

A heavier bike is more planted and honestly it's no rocket but it can run 70 to 80 miles per hour and that's fine where I live here in the US
I knew that muffler looked familiar: 2007 GSXR1000.
This little agricultural mill it's counter-balanced, that's why it may feel smooth.
I call it agricultural because it's not even a 4 valve head, talk about built to a budget.
This may fly on S.E Asia where anything over 250cc gets taxed the life out and other places where tiered license systems are implemented but I doubt they'll sell a lot on the USA where everyone else it's at 300cc or above and the used maket it's vast and plenty choked full of bigger cc used bikes for same or little more money than this new 250.

Speaking of comparison with Yamaha R3, what do you think of having to check & adjust the valves first @ 1,000 km & every 5,000 km thereafter?? One would have to check the valves 8 (eight) !! times before the Yamaha's R3 valves need to be adjusted @ 42,000 km? Isn't this a deal breaker?

I wonder why they didn’t made a naked version of this 250, it has a nice simple engine and looks good for a modern small bike.
They did, it was the GW250 Inazuma.
@@bikersquest and it was a Twin Cyl and heavy. Then they made a adventure version of the inazuma and called a V-strom 250, and all complained that it was heavy. But a single cyl like a RE Himalayan with the same weight and higher seat height was praised…go figure. Sadly that adventure version was discontinued.
@@ripmax333 Exactly the inazuma can hold 70 all day at top out at 83mph and everyone calls it crap yet the new 350 Hunter had 4hp less at more cc can max out at 70mph

I look at the 2nd hand market and i always feel disappointed as there arent that many good a2 bikes that i would buy whem i get my license... like the only ones im intrested in are around 3500 euros... like wtf thats a bit to much for a ninja 300 or r3 compared to other countries... and on top of that there arent that many being sold... the better option is to get one of this gixxers brand new cause they go for around 3900 to 4000 at dealers... but whatever i still have a couple of months untill ill be able to buy one and ride

Yep, that's the joy of smaller bikes - you have to squeeze every ounce of performance out and then try and maintain it (all the time without any danger of losing your licence)....

Darth Vader there's something oddly satisfying about pushing an underpowered vehicle. Just flogging it and trying to make it go as fast as possible! That's something you absolutely cannot do in a litre bike.
I own the Inazuma which this bike derives the engine from, it's a really good commuter engine. The power's where you need it and it has a mini power band (shift light)

I have both, the gw250 inazuma is more upright and a lot softer in the suspension, the gsx250r is a stiffer and more fun to ride but would be better with the gw250 engine, both bikes are better with one more tooth on the front sprocket this will correct the speedometer, the sprocket may be used from a suzuki drz400, you will need to grind about 2 millimetres from the center of the sprocket, but well worth it as you will now be able to keep up on the highway

Does it not probably share an engine etc with the Inazuma 250 and V-Strom 250.
Along the same lines as what Honda has done with the CB500X, CB500F, CBR500R and CMX500 Rebel.
I suppose economically makes sense with bikes sharing many parts.
You've not done any 500cc Honda's reviews although that could be down to your personal preference or dealers allowing you to test said bikes.
Yeah it's down to dealers having them available for me to ride - if one becomes available, I'd love a go!

I agree with those that say the Suzuki made this a 250cc in order to keep the price point down. But, in order to compete with the likes of 300+cc bikes from Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda and even KTM, 250cc with 26 bhp seems too small and too underpowered. Since most of its competitors are a little above 300cc and in the mid 40 bhp power range. Here in Mexico those bikes are very popular, especially the R3 and the MT-03. I just can´t see Suzuki having any kind of success with this bike. Too bad really, I love Suzuki bikes. Ride safe, cheers!

The point is....it doesn't have any competition at 250cc. Because everyone else is going bigger. A small bike is a small bike. Why worry about 5 or ten extra mph? That's not the point or purpose of the bike. Its the ultimate computer...and will not get u into trouble

just brought gsx 150 yesterday 14.5 kw ? $3279 nz 250 wz closer to $7400 I've done 120 k haven't been going over 4000rpm c u gave that new bike some throttle at times Do you think I could do up2 6000 without doing any harm to bike?

Torn between a sports and a naked, I really loved your review of the Duke 390 - and although I know they are completely different types of bike, the rrp's aren't a million miles apart. IYHO what would you go for?

Dean ...Honda's 500 is the best bike for you to start with.
I can maybe get one for £2800 from a shop, 17 plate & 400miles. I’m used to a sinnis 125 so anything else feels fast.
Wish this had an S version... kinda seems pointless putting fairings on it

More than 1000cc less as the ktm super duke 1290. Didn't it give you the feeling of a snail at acceleration?
No not at all, I like riding all kinds of different bikes and of course you re calibrate your expectations accordingly...and anyway as I'm sure you know, acceleration growth doesn't have a linear relationship with cc -i.e. a 500cc bike doesn't necessarily go twice as quick as a 250 etc....in fact I imagine its a law of diminishing returns job...

What I mostly like is that you don't have to change gear that often; ther's enough power to pull it from low speed in higher gears. And overtaking costs less time which is safer. The downside is that you'll reach license treathening speeds in no time.
This or the RC390 ? Kind of dumb question but I would like to hear your opinion, fellow motorcycle fan scrolling in the comments

Nathan Vonlanthen get the rc as long as you don't plan on doing long commutes or road trips. The rc is a real adrenaline rush.
25 HP for a 250 twin is rubbish , my WR250 R had 30 bhp and that's a single , factor in the 181kgs weight which is exactly the same as the Yamaha mt 07 with 75 bhp and its underpowered , the R3 has 42 bhp and its a tad lighter , 17 bhp more than the Suzuki which is a huge difference in this class .

Sparky Fly. Its a tiny bike. They are all slow. You miss the point of what this bike is...its a full size frame bike. That's way cooler then a scooter. Can take you on the highway. Gets great milage. Is easy for anyone to ride. Cheap to own and maintain. These bikes aren't about power. You sir are a idiot

yeah with 25yrs of development we've managed to end up with 4 strokes with 35bhp less. 2stroke ftw
I'm betting this is less likely to blow up though! With a good rider that RGV could keep up with most things on the twisties and still sit at 120 on the motorway.
