    Suzuki is finally going to get into the small engine market with their new GSX 250R. The real question is, why would they have gone with a 250 engine for the American market?

    "Is that it?"
    I'm the exact opposite. I love a quiet bike. I ride at night and I'd rather not wake up the entire neighborhood when I pull out of my driveway. For me, an extremely quiet bike is a bonus.

    This is a great bike for beginners, for all the reasons you don't like it.
    Also, you have to break things in...once the brakes break in, they stop great. The bike puts its power to the road smoothly and nicely, and yes, it's not a 300...and that's why it's good for new riders.
    And considering the price, it's even more appealing.
    I think those of us who have been riding for years, we shouldn't be testing "new" bikes for "new" riders...we just won't be happy with it, by what we can compare it to. But with that said, I found this bike a lot of fun and very well worth the money. I am speaking of the 2018 model of course.
    And speed is NOT what a new rider needs to be worried about. Sorry, but this time I think your review is way off the mark. You're judging the wrong things on this bike.

      You said exactly what I was going to say! For beginners this is a great bike if you want to enjoy the fun of just simply riding a bike and having a sense of freedom like I do in my Jeep with the doors and top off, it’s not always about power and going 160, only idiots who don’t love their life do that!

  • @turbo311
    @turbo311 6 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    I appreciate your honesty, but I think you misunderstand this bike. It’s definitely not a freeway bike, it’s a city and backroads bike. Are the brakes really that bad? Change the pads. The build quality on this bike is better than the Ninja 300 and R3. Not even going to bring KTM into this. Guaranteed a GSX250R will outlast all of them. SLOW BIKE FAST BRO! FULL THROTTLE EVERYWHERE!

      I can attest. I don't have any experience on anything else on a curvy road, but I enjoy it in the mountains. "That 400 is pretty fast in the turns" is what someone told me lol

    I had a ninja 250 when I started and it was some of the funnest riding I've done, you feel like a legend smashing through gears and leaning hard over. If I had to start again I'd start still start on a 250. IDK just Me I guess

  • @333zack
    @333zack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    Even if it is your honest opinion, the test is somewhat unfair. First, it is a 250 cm³ and not a 300 Ninja, 325 R3 or a 390 Duke. You do your test on large, straight roads and a few km on the highway. These are not the right roads for objectively testing a real 250. I think you are to much focused on power and speed. Second, a 250 is not dangerous on the highway, otherwise all the trucks will be in the same situation. Third, overtaking is not dangerous with a 250, because passing an other vehicule is the matter of a good evaluation of what I have and what the traffic situation is. A bad driver does bad evaluations, independent of the power of his bike. By the way, I own a GW 250 Inazuma (50 000km in 3 yrs) together with other, more powerful bikes.

      I like how everyone complains about the weight with the size. It's like this for control. This bike is PERFECTLY fine for new riders. This is how a bike should be. Because idiots who learn how to ride on larger bikes, try to go fast in all situations, that's how they start wrecking.
      This is a perfect bike for anyone to learn on, so they can understand the concepts. I don't ever rev up my shit, never have. I don't get up and go, never have. It's pointless, if I want to go fast, I'll jump in the A600 helicopter and go fast. Roads are meant for traveling, not trying to speed around on, like idiots.

    • @ThePeacePlant
      @ThePeacePlant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These dudes ruin the bike scene. They are like children 'i just want to go fast!' and these are the same dudes who tell beginners to start out with 500-600cc+, which can leave someone really hurt and that everything that is below that is "not a real bike" dudes are annoying and makes me not even want to tell people I love biking, so I am not to be associated with immaturity and stupidity

    I bought a GSX250R as my first motorcycle not too long ago. It's actually a lot of fun and easy to ride. Feels great too in my opinion. Mostly because I don't want to go too fast. It's not too fast and it's not too slow. But damn it looks good too.

  • @TimothySOgreat

    I recently just bought this bike and I really enjoy it! I've also been riding for about 8 years now. I bought it to save the Miles on my t120 and to commute. This is a great commuter bike! It's also fun in the city. I live in a very small town with tons of stop signs and red lights. And you are probably not gonna top 45mph. The thing I do enjoy is how much I have to shift going from start to stop. No one likes a city bike where you are doing 40mph and you're still in first. On this bike you are in 4th gear going 40mph. And I think learning how to shift is very important on a beginner bike. Just my opinion from a guy who actually owns this bike. As always, great review though chase.

    • @turbo311
      @turbo311 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Timothy Crane You get this bike. Most people just want to shit on it. It’s clear that Suzuki didn’t want to compete with the 300 class right now. Maybe it’s the wrong choice, but this bike has other purposes in mind. Glad you’re enjoying it.

      How's the weight? Seems heavy on the spec sheet. I weigh 178 and am as tall as chase, would this be underpowered for my weight? I love small bikes, but really like this over a cbr and the r3. But...the Ninja 400 is only going to cost 5 grand so, i dunno

    • @FawadBilgrami
      @FawadBilgrami 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same. The review seems to be very much directed towards highways and comparable to powerful bikes rather than daily commuters. I have 2016 S1KRR and was thinking of grabbing this for commuting.
      Thanks for your comments as from an owner's perspective, it does weigh more.

    • @carlosrevolledo291
      @carlosrevolledo291 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's ok if his review is directed towards highway, most of his points were actually totally fair, but he should be clear with that. Instead he generalizes and makes this bike look like crap, when Suzuki points out from the very beginning that this is a CITY commuting bike. It's like saying that the best marvel movie sucks because it doesn't have the depth of a Bergman movie.

    The magic number 250cc is just related Japanese legal system. In Japan, under 250cc can avoid a legal inspection system "Syaken", also tax on under 250cc is relatively low.
    The long-survived 248cc engine has a low-rpm-torque tendency which is clearly adjusted Japanese narrower, congestive traffic condition and speed restriction.
    Suzuki simply hopes to sell same products whole of the world. That's just a cost issue.
    Main target of the product is Asia. I expect few USA people like its brilliant fuel efficiency.

      I ride one because I go to school in the city. It's too fast for the city, but I also rip it in the mountains for hours at a time.
      It's not good in the fast sweepers as it's nearly pegged going 70-80mph, but in the tighter roads 40-60mph its great.

    You're spot on on for the 250's. I bought a new Honda CRF250L because I wanted something cheap and reliable to learn how to ride in dirt. But what I failed to consider was that it is terrifying to ride on the freeway to get to many of those fun dirt riding areas. It makes me miss my old 750 Katana.

    Pretty sure UK is forced to start on a 125cc bike on their first licence level. This Suzuki I think was aimed at that euro second level restricted licence market which also gets a 250 version of the Ninja300 etc.
    I would rather have a 5-7 year old Ninja250R than this new Suzuki 250.

    The Gsx r125 is quite the opposite bike. It looks awsome, has keyless ignition, great brakes, good power-to-weight ratio(for a 125), a good mpg and relatively cheap (in norway at least). Sad you dont get to experience it over in the US.

    topping out at 80+ isn't too bad. my wife has a GZ250. With me on it, (5-10/225) It tops out at 75. With me and the wife, it tops out at about 65. I'd bet that would be a really good bike for someone living in the city, smaller stature and intimidated by the larger 500-750 bikes.

      Ninja 300, Ktm duke 390/rc390, Yamaha r3. All low seat height light and better in every way. For maybe 500-1000 bucks more. The reason no one sells a 250 is because it's outdated and just not as good. Minus the Honda cbr250rr which you can only get in Europe and Asia.

    • @b1pig
      @b1pig 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The big thing everyone should remember is that it's a 250. Despite it's styling, its never going to be a 100+ mph bike. You're talking about an entry level 250cc sport STYLED bike. My wife's bike is a short geared, cruiser STYLED bike. It hardly gets out of its own way with stock gearing. Every manufacturer can't build fire breathing 250's for entry level performance. Look across the board at the 250cc dual sport bikes. There is one stand-out in power, two right in the middle and weakling. Not every buyer wants a bike that's going to lift the front tire. That's all I'm saying. You have to look at the target market. If that thing was supposed to fit a track segment.... then yea. There are a LOT of short comings.

It was surprisingly comfortable as a road bike. I'm hoping to see Suzuki come out with this bike but with a 300/350cc engine with a proper tune for 2019 in the US market

But I'm almost positive I would feel the same about this bike as well.... but I have to be honest I rode my buddies cbr 300r and it felt riddled with vibration and kinda felt lack luster compared to mine but that still will not negate the fact that these small bikes not matter what brand or cc size will be a pleasing bike... riding a slow bike fast is such a great feeling... now if your aspirations are 100 plus mph hits or have an ego that won't allow you to be slower than almost any sedan or van on the road past 70 mph you are obiviously in the wrong target range... all in all, if you want a small cc bike I would suggest you base your search off availability in your location and straight up looks of the particular bike.

    I'll agree with Chase, the R3 is a great 300cc bike. No it's not the fastest bike out there but, coming from a previous r3 owner, they are not that bad from 0-60 for a smaller engine bike. But bought mine last year for commuting and fun factor. I was avg town/highway mpg was 60/63. Got my best mpgs surprisingly between 35-40. Overall fun bike and but one downfall was highway. Screams up there and topped out for me at 110ish. Still it was fun and good mpgs and yes it can be a good starter bike.

    I got my 2012 ninja 250R up to 103. Traded that bike in last march for a 2017 fz-07. Riding my ninja on the highway at 9-11k rpm is not comfortable at all. Oh well, it was my learner bike during college. Put 12k miles on it driving around Orlando, Florida. Definitely need more power for passing and overall safety. First couple days of owning my FZ07, I accidently pulled a wheelie in first gear on the way to work because I was used to my ninja going all out. That's the main thing I enjoyed about my ninja 250, twisting the throttle hard and banging through the gears.

    I own the original bike that used the chassis that this bike uses. It is a 2013 GW250. The bike is extremely heavy for a 250, but I did find once I got used to the bike I could throw it around pretty good. I had alot more fun with the bike once off the pavement. The GW had a more torquey cam and was alot better used as a small displacement beat the hell out of it bike which I finally achieved last year when I messed up the swing arm. Overall I rode the bike 12000mi. in 2 1/2 years and overall it was fairly fun, but I wouldn't buy it again. I would have waited and bought a CRF250L Rally. only thing good about it was I got 75mpg constantly, but that is literally the only good thing about that bike and chassis series.

    Suzuki made a really bad choice. They used the GW250 / Inazuma 250 engine in this GSXR. They should fire the people who came up with the idea to get rid of those GW250 engines which they had on stock and put them in a GSXR. That engine is slow AF. 90MPH was the top speed for me on that bike. Next to that, we have already passed the 250cc bike phase. Ninja 300 is 296cc, R3 is 321cc, why would Suzuki do this? They should have at least made a 350cc twin to outrun the R3. I'm still waiting for this GSX-R250 to test, but nothing in Europe. Maybe end of this month or September. Oh, the V-Strom 250 will have the same engine, so that bike will be worthless too, unless you live in Asia. a GSX-R 350 should have been the answer to the Ninja 300 and R3.

    40 year old bike. Non-self-energizing drum brakes. 246cc true displacement, two-stroke single. 5 speeds. +3/-4 sprockets. ~200 pounds fully loaded without rider. DOT knobbies. Southern California freeways.
    You hope to not have to slow down because you can't get the speed back, not for any safety reasons. This GSX *still* has a higher effective/usable top speed than my bike. Which, incidentally, has a 2.1 gallon *total, absolute* capacity tank, gets 35-40 MPG, and takes a few ounces of oil in each gallon.
    From the reviews - yours and others - I wouldn't *buy* this bike at dealer price, but I wouldn't completely eliminate the idea of *owning* one.

    I have owned the GSX250R for over a year, I agree it’s not a quick bike or reliable on the Hwy. However, this bike is so zippy in the street and cities. I bought the bike because I feel in love the look on this bike and that GSXR feel towards itself. If this for everyone, if you don’t like the break set up. It’s adjustable. For the first 40m of a drag it will beat a HSV maloo. The launch is pretty good and responsive but lacks acceleration as Chase previously mentioned. I really do wish Suzuki bring out a 650 model like Honda and Kawasaki.

    All things considered when stock, I wonder what SS brake lines, some HH Sintered EBC pads, a K&N intake, a slip-on, and a power-commander can do. Does the engine have a lot of potential and Suzuki just tuned it like crap? Is the caliper the limiting factor when braking or is it the whole package?
    I love the digital display, and it looks like the factory clips-ons are more mid height than high (the bars look lower than what you'll find on the R3, Ninja, and CBR). I love the look of it, too. It's a shame if it can't compete with what is already on the market.
    At the same time, in a market that has all but moved on to 300ccs, is a 250 just too little too late?

  • @BolverkAtlasia
    @BolverkAtlasia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    250s and 300s do have a viable US market. That low power actually works in the favor of a person who wants to learn how to become a very good rider, street or track. That low power gives you way more confidence in pushing the bike's limits and you become more keen on learning advanced techniques. You don't have to start on a 250 or 300. You can start on whatever bike you want and be fine if you have a good head on your shoulders, but you're not gonna be confident in pushing its limits with a good head on your shoulders.
    The way confidence works is that once it's established, it only grows. With my established confidence and experience, I decided to jump from a 250 to a 948cc naked bike. Hell yeah, I can take that thing. I'll grow into it because my confidence is there. I have a fair assumption of what a bike can and can't do by riding a 250 running on technology from the late 1980s. How is a 2017 bike gonna feel? Probably much better. So now I'll have two bikes that I like and more is always better.
    I don't know, a lot of people started on 600s and they seem fine. Many of them are slower than me, but they're not dying or anything, so that counts for something. Maybe I could have started on a 600 and developed the same ability that I have now, but I can say that it would have definitely taken longer for me to start leaning one of those things over more and more.

    We're saving for a GSXR750 for my wife next spring; can't wait to buy it for her!! I'm with you on the whole 250/300 thing. If you must get a 300cc sportbike, go with the R3 or the Ninja. We owned a CBR300r and it was pretty boring and no fun commuting on the interstate; I didn't care for it. Tires are too skinny, no power, sounds like a damn 4-wheeler, too light and gets blown around like crazy on the freeway. I always advise against any new rider getting a small displacement sport bike. Boredom will likely hit quickly and you'll be stuck with huge depreciation and loss of time involved trying to sell your old bike.

    I feel like making a new video just to contradict this one because I have this same bike and the brakes work awesome the speed is everything I would want it to be for a first-time bike. The mirrors DO NOT MOVE!, the Turning feels like you're driving a heavy bike and it is, It's not a dirtbike. Contrary to its speed its heavy and very comfortable, relaxed sitting position with some quick acceleration - top speed not so great but it will keep up on a highway. Gas usage is insane - never have to fill and let's face it the bike looks gorgeous. Also, it will take a good beating if you end up dumping. The parts are super cheap to replace.
