My sister went with the coolest middle school ever. They were experimenting with child learning strategies and they worked. They allowed fun hair colors and hair styles, they had a very lenient dress code, and they all had chromebooks to use for school and they could redo all their assignments and test unlimited times. It helped alleviate stress and actually got the kids interested.

My school tried to riot once, I'm dead serious. It was the middle of January, the coldest day of the year, in MAINE, it was below zero weather. And some genius called in a bomb scare. Usually, this counts as a day off, this was at the beginning of the day, I just put my winter jacket (one that can withstand chills of -10 for hours) on my chair and settled in to study for study hall. And they pulled the fire alarm, the principal announced everyone leaves everything behind and get out for a nice, normal, fire drill. So I left my jacket behind and went outside. We stood 45 minutes outside. In negative temperatures, none of us with a jacket, some in shorts and t-shirts because of gym class, some without shoes because of dance class. Oh yeah, I was in a "special" study hall *has Aspergers so they insisted on one "special" study period per semester despite me hating that study hall and not getting much work done in them because of how hard it was to study when you're in a noisy room with aides bugging you every five minutes if you need help*, and guess who had it that class? They kept us away from the other children, at a shed, about thirty feet away from everyone else, and watched us like hawks. Later I found out that several kids snuck out of the chaos and went home. My house was a block and a half away from the school, but nope, they wouldn't let me leave. It was for my own protection. Then they crammed all the kids, all four years, in the gym. Including several children who suffered from claustrophobia. This is when all hell broke loose, kids were screaming at teachers to leave because they were terrified out of their minds and were having panic attacks, teachers escorted children to the restroom to ensure that no one could call their parents and tell them what the hell was going on, and a bomb-sniffing dog was brought in to inspect the gym at one point. I was one of the "clear" classrooms early, so I got to go back. I literally begged the teachers to let me call my mom to have her pick me up, (they had a special phone I used once to call my mom, so I knew I could use it.) I knew if she knew HALF of what was going on, she'd go on a rampage. No, they said it was "for my own safety" and though it was "scary", I needed to "be strong". Yeah, I developed a new layer of resentment to those teachers at that point. Oh yeah, several kids had very expensive possessions and cash stolen from their backpacks during the search. One girl lost her whole paycheck during the scare, she apparently just cashed it that morning, she threw a fit. But getting a free lunch as a consolation prize, because of the fact she lost over $100 dollars in cash. Oh yeah, at the end of the day, I failed a test (last class was the test, the only class NOT AFFECTED by the bomb scare), was pissed off, and told my mom everything. I think she gave the principal an ulcer on ripping him to shreds for how he handled it. She and several other parents who threatened to sue because of how it was handled. They never tried it again after that.
Yeah at my school people kept ditching so they put up an iron fence around the whole school so no one could leave. Looked like a prison, and not to mention it’s a huge fire hazard when you have to wait for a teacher to unlock the gate to leave.
In my primary school we were in 3rd grade and another tomboy and I were hanging out with the boys and she got the BRILLIANT idea to play a game. The game was we split into teams, picked a base, and tackled kids on the other teams and dragged them to our teams home base. The catch was that if kids tried to run away from jail everyone on the team who captured them would pile on them and kick them. Eventually it was a free for all and we got kids punching each other, scratching each others faces, bending arms back, pulling hair, jumping on each other, and literally slamming each other to the ground. My teacher didn't notice until our third recess of the day. Oh yeah and there was a baseball we found and if someone on a team got it, they would throw it as hard as they could to someone on their team, in exchange of getting someone out of jail. Core memory
I just feel bad for the kids who maybe couldn’t get a lunch the day they announced it. Like obviously there was the group who got school lunch every day, and the group that brought lunch from home, but what about the group who exclusively ate lunch out of school? Like I imagine a lot of kids probably went home to grab a bite to eat or something as opposed to paying for school lunch or lunch at the food trucks like Tabbes mentioned. I imagine they probably didn’t have anything that day.
My school had enough lunches to feed kids who couldn't afford it. They only started doing it this year because of covid. They could do it. They chose not to do it until a freaking global crisis. Schools don't care, they just don't want to seem like the bad guy when the world collapses.

Oh god something similar happened at my school too, but it wasn't just a single day incident. It went on for almost 2 weeks. You see, I'm from Brazil and here schools usually pack students from all ages, from kindergarten all the way to highschool, instead of having schools for certain grades like elementary, highschool, etc. With this I pretty much studied in the same school for 13 years, I've seen some shit in those 13 years ok?? The coolest of them, though, was back when I was at 9th grade. Basically one day my school decided to rise the prices for everything in the dining hall up to 400%, which was insane. it came out of nowhere and obviously the students weren't amused in the slightest. One does not simply mess with a teenager's food. In the very next day the WHOLE school went into what I call the Great Food Boycott. Suddenly students of all ages were not only bringing food from home for the school break, but there were classes actually organizing themselves to share their money and have one student use it all to bring bags full of snacks for everyone. Hell during break time I'd see guys standing by the class doors distributing snacks to the students coming out, like a soldier handing weapons to their fellow war comrades as they enter the battlefield. It was such a surreal sight because everyone was dead serious and behaving like they were part of an intense rebellion. People also would sit on the floor in groups to eat right in front of the deserted diner, and if anyone dared approach it to buy anything, they'd be stopped by someone of the same grade and offered food from their own bags. For two weeks an entire school came together to fight for justice over food, and it was GLORIOUS.

Considering I haven't been in high school in nearly a decade I vaguely remember my school cafeteria having 3 selections, The first was a Hispanic moms cooking, Haitian I got lucky with those cooks because their food was delicious so they were everybody's mom. A lot of students would show their appreciation by hugging them when lunch ended and I was one of them.
I remember at my school, you had to earn that privilege to get open lunch. I think you had to have a high GPA or be on the honor roll. Plus, it was seniors only.

When I was in 7th grade, my school had a 'riot'. If you can call it that. I was late (like always) on this day. I walked into my classroom and was greeted by friend who immediately informed me of the so-called riot. Apparently, at 7:30 am, three fights broke out at the same time. One was near the front doors, the second in the gym, and the third in the hallway. One of the fights involved the principle, and the other fight was just two girls pulling each other's hair
Something similar happened to me once, As I arrived to school my friend told me about a fight that broke out at my school before I got there where two kids were fist fighting because one of them broke the other’s glasses, and the guy whose glasses got broken was one of my classmates, he was a pretty chill guy but after that he became more tough

I'm glad that despite my school having similar issues (drugs, the occasional fights and miscreants doing shit), but at least in all my 5 years they never once even mentioned prohibiting students from going off property as some of us had to go off property to go home for lunch (why stay at school with a shitty sandwich or spend 10 bucks at hte cafeteria when I live behind the school and could go home and have a bigger tastier but messier sandwich and a bowl of noodles and a big coffee while I spent my 40 minute lunch break watching the news or playing on my PSP until that got stolen at one point)
One day at my high school in Canada (secondary school rather, I'm French-Canadian and the system out here is different) , the school decided to shut down the soup kitchen, which meant that the low income kids would starve...who represented about 70% of the 4k+ students. During a week, we would demonstrate at first, then, some students brought tents and decided they were occupying the school (it lasted 3 days). The last day, we went on to blockade the main street of our city and the Mayor literally sent riot squads to deal with us. Tear gas, rubber bullets and such fine tactics were used on teenagers. Everything stopped when a dozen of students decided to hop on some cars and moppets, armed with fireworks and paintball guns, then aimed blindly at the cops, the students and pretty much anyone in their way. On kid ended up losing an eye, everyone stopped the riots at once, the low income kids were granted free lunch at the cafeteria and yeah...that was wild and fucked up.

Video time: 1:45 Oh my god... I used to be able to go out with a pass in high school. Then one of the office ladies told me to give her my id card (for special access/pass to get out). I should've asked first and stood my ground (if she persisted). But since I was innocent I gave it to her without asking why. Nor did she state the reason *BEFOREHAND*. And then she holepunched it! Saying "Congratulations (the rest I forgot, something along the lines of me not being able to go out anymore)" and it was because I was usually late to school. I honestly think she just wanted to pick on ME. There are OTHER students that probably do shit like that or do even worse than that. Sometimes they DON'T even come to school! Honestly, what a bitch! OH and the school didn't allow me to get the free lunch. So if I forgot my lunch, I wouldn't be able to get my daily nutrition. Unless, I paid for it. Not to mention, the school's lunch was often SHITTY and not as fresh. You can tell. Some of the food wasn't even heated up all the way. Which means it was probably stored and frozen. That's just my opinion though. Either way, I'm not paying for shitty food. I'd rather go to del taco or stater bros. or heck, I'D RATHER GO HOME AND GET MY FOOD. Periodt. Thank you.

No joke that actually happened to our school too. People ( who I mean by that is all the guys) kept ruining the bathrooms by stuffing toilet paper in the toilets and marking with sharpies in the stalls. Also ripping the soap dispensers off the walls and putting then in the toilets as well. Then people couldn't go to the bathroom when class was going. Then we could go during class but we had to sigh this paper thing saying our name, when we went to the bathroom, and how long we went for. No one really does it anymore though. Also I'm pretty sure our principal is an actual demon. she suspended one of my classmates because she asked me what page we were on in the textbooks. I hate her a lot. Wow I typed a lot... Oops
One time the principal walked into the classroom and I stood up on my chair and gave a big speech about "we won't be slaves" and "less work" and the next thing the principal knew he was being assaulted by 6th graders with rulers and scissors . We hit him and he called the police. We marched down to the office (central government) and threw rocks at the Windows,and doors. We got in and I picked up the PP-SH 41 off the desk. The police arrived and we fired on them. We established the " students republic" in the school and burned all the pictures of the dictatorial principals. And that was my dream last night😁
We had off campus lunch, but we also had kids selling drugs in class so we never got it suspended. Not even pot, the girl behind me in history sold meth out of a pretty lace purse. Kids fought in class, in the halls, courtyard...the pool. This one girl nearly got drowned by a group of other girls because one of their multiple boy toys dropped her for the chick that nearly drowned. Took the gym teacher and half the guys in the class to break that up. We even had a daycare by the lunchroom because so many girls had infants and toddlers. We weren't even the "trouble school" that all the problematic kids got sent too. We were actually the more "posh" high school in the city. Gotta love highschool.

Riot? Let me tell you about the wacky world of AP comparitive government in-class simulations. One day, started playigg a game meant to demonstrate how revolutions and socioeconomic hierarchies often function. The way it worked is that we started with the rules that individuals could trade points and the people with the most points would move up in levels and those with fewer would fall. The highest class was given the ability to completely control all rules of the game. If you fell a certain amount, your points would be redistributed and you would become a penniless slave. This was a two-day thing and I was sick for the first day so I was born into slavery. After much lobbying the highest class (which had collectivized its points so no one could rise or fall to or from the class) freed the slaves and created a new class at the bottom. They then voted to equally divide all points between all classes. Not only this, but the representative from this group had voted to stand on a chair while giving a speech announcing this while the national anthem of the USSR played. Apparently, what was meant to happen was a revolt where the lower classes and the slaves took power and forced the higher class out. What instead happened was a peaceful and truly communist reform movement. None of this is a joke and all actually happened.

I remember that in my junior year of high school they did this to us and there was a protest of students that lasted almost a week. The reasons where he same too. The problem here was that there were too many students, the cafeteria was too small and one hour wasn’t enough. This resulted in a good 25-30% of the students not being able to eat. And if you didn’t eat then you weren’t going to the whole day because they took away all the vending machines and closed down the snacks store. So it meant 8 hours straight without eating. Also the food they served was disgusting. At the end they had to bring someone over to teach this people how to cook, reopen the store and bring back the vending machines.
IDK what schools you’re going to, but my school (and all the ones in my city) have DELICIOUS Cafeteria food. They sell: burgers, hot dogs, pizza, BBQ ribs, chicken nuggets, fries, ice cream, long johns, poutine, tacos and like 50 others. Each meal is only 5 bucks and the food actually tastes really good. The vending machines sell chips and pop for like 2 bucks. Plus there’s a McDonald’s and a Starbucks a couple of blocks down. I’m so privileged.
I'm guessing you're Canadian, The lunches here in the US make me actually sick, in a lot of cases I go without food since I don't have time to pack at times, it's that bad

At my middle school, they implemented this system where depending on your grades, you'd get a different level card, with their being 4 levels. White, the lowest, blue, black, and platinum, the highest. If you had a platinum card, you'd get discounts on school event tickets, and basically bragging rights. Black card was basically the same thing, but not as cool and with lower discounts. If you had at least a blue card, you'd get to go to the gym after lunch, and if you had a white card, screw you. Now nobody really minded this too much, having a white pretty much meant you were just rock stupid, which wasn't very common, but what ticked all us blue cards (nearly 50% of kids, I joke not) is that you'd get to have lunch first depending on your card status. Yep, you got good grades, you ate before everyone else. People came to resent those higher card people and bullying became a big issue. They had to recall the card system when fights broke out. Sidenote, they eventually stopped letting blue cards go to the gym, which only fueled the flame of hatred. Oh and on another occasion, (after they removed the God awful card system) they blocked TH-cam and all other game sites for people with even just 1 F. Which was a whole lot of students. Not to mention, their filter on "unallowed" sites was very vague, and actually ended up blocking sites that impeded on academics. You got 1 F? You don'tget any help, in fact, screw you! You don'teven get the resources to get up that F! In their defense, this is when they were still figuring out implementing laptops into their system. To put it nicely, my middle school had no idea how to handle (the most caustic, radioactive people ever) middle schoolers, and caused a lot of outrage. So glad I'm out of that hellhole.
My high school had open lunch, they threatened to close campus during lunch numerous times, mostly due to litter in the neighborhood, but it never happened, probably because the cafeteria was too small, and it would have required then to change from two lunch periods to three or four. Years before I went to that school there use to be a sidewalk trail that went from the high school to an area that had a Little Caesar's and a donut shop, that sidewalk did get fenced off, because the residents complained about the litter.
Back in High School, in sophomore year Im pretty sure, we had 2 protests in one week. The first one, I don't remember what it was about but it resulted in the benches in the hallways being taken away. So in retaliation, about 100 - 200 students held a sit in during class where they sat on the lockers and floor and stuff because we all wanted our benches back. Anyways, a few kids were suspended but in the end we got the benches back.
Fun fact: in the Middle East, it’s an equivalent to a huuuge middle finger to throw shoes at someone.

In my primary school we were in 3rd grade and another tomboy and I were hanging out with the boys and she got the BRILLIANT idea to play a game. The game was we split into teams, picked a base, and tackled kids on the other teams and dragged them to our teams home base. The catch was that if kids tried to run away from jail everyone on the team who captured them would pile on them and kick them. Eventually it was a free for all and we got kids punching each other, scratching each others faces, bending arms back, pulling hair, jumping on each other, and literally slamming each other to the ground. My teacher didn't notice until our third recess of the day. Oh yeah and there was a baseball we found and if someone on a team got it, they would throw it as hard as they could to someone on their team, in exchange of getting someone out of jail. Core memory

I just feel bad for the kids who maybe couldn’t get a lunch the day they announced it. Like obviously there was the group who got school lunch every day, and the group that brought lunch from home, but what about the group who exclusively ate lunch out of school? Like I imagine a lot of kids probably went home to grab a bite to eat or something as opposed to paying for school lunch or lunch at the food trucks like Tabbes mentioned. I imagine they probably didn’t have anything that day.

Oh god something similar happened at my school too, but it wasn't just a single day incident. It went on for almost 2 weeks. You see, I'm from Brazil and here schools usually pack students from all ages, from kindergarten all the way to highschool, instead of having schools for certain grades like elementary, highschool, etc. With this I pretty much studied in the same school for 13 years, I've seen some shit in those 13 years ok?? The coolest of them, though, was back when I was at 9th grade.
Basically one day my school decided to rise the prices for everything in the dining hall up to 400%, which was insane. it came out of nowhere and obviously the students weren't amused in the slightest. One does not simply mess with a teenager's food. In the very next day the WHOLE school went into what I call the Great Food Boycott. Suddenly students of all ages were not only bringing food from home for the school break, but there were classes actually organizing themselves to share their money and have one student use it all to bring bags full of snacks for everyone. Hell during break time I'd see guys standing by the class doors distributing snacks to the students coming out, like a soldier handing weapons to their fellow war comrades as they enter the battlefield. It was such a surreal sight because everyone was dead serious and behaving like they were part of an intense rebellion. People also would sit on the floor in groups to eat right in front of the deserted diner, and if anyone dared approach it to buy anything, they'd be stopped by someone of the same grade and offered food from their own bags. For two weeks an entire school came together to fight for justice over food, and it was GLORIOUS.

One day at my high school in Canada (secondary school rather, I'm French-Canadian and the system out here is different) , the school decided to shut down the soup kitchen, which meant that the low income kids would starve...who represented about 70% of the 4k+ students.
During a week, we would demonstrate at first, then, some students brought tents and decided they were occupying the school (it lasted 3 days). The last day, we went on to blockade the main street of our city and the Mayor literally sent riot squads to deal with us. Tear gas, rubber bullets and such fine tactics were used on teenagers. Everything stopped when a dozen of students decided to hop on some cars and moppets, armed with fireworks and paintball guns, then aimed blindly at the cops, the students and pretty much anyone in their way.
On kid ended up losing an eye, everyone stopped the riots at once, the low income kids were granted free lunch at the cafeteria and yeah...that was wild and fucked up.

Oh my god... I used to be able to go out with a pass in high school. Then one of the office ladies told me to give her my id card (for special access/pass to get out). I should've asked first and stood my ground (if she persisted). But since I was innocent I gave it to her without asking why. Nor did she state the reason *BEFOREHAND*. And then she holepunched it! Saying "Congratulations (the rest I forgot, something along the lines of me not being able to go out anymore)" and it was because I was usually late to school. I honestly think she just wanted to pick on ME. There are OTHER students that probably do shit like that or do even worse than that. Sometimes they DON'T even come to school! Honestly, what a bitch!
OH and the school didn't allow me to get the free lunch. So if I forgot my lunch, I wouldn't be able to get my daily nutrition. Unless, I paid for it. Not to mention, the school's lunch was often SHITTY and not as fresh. You can tell. Some of the food wasn't even heated up all the way. Which means it was probably stored and frozen. We had off campus lunch, but we also had kids selling drugs in class so we never got it suspended. Not even pot, the girl behind me in history sold meth out of a pretty lace purse. Kids fought in class, in the halls, courtyard...the pool. This one girl nearly got drowned by a group of other girls because one of their multiple boy toys dropped her for the chick that nearly drowned. Took the gym teacher and half the guys in the class to break that up.
We even had a daycare by the lunchroom because so many girls had infants and toddlers.
We weren't even the "trouble school" that all the problematic kids got sent too. We were actually the more "posh" high school in the city.

Riot? Let me tell you about the wacky world of AP comparitive government in-class simulations. One day, started playigg a game meant to demonstrate how revolutions and socioeconomic hierarchies often function. The way it worked is that we started with the rules that individuals could trade points and the people with the most points would move up in levels and those with fewer would fall. The highest class was given the ability to completely control all rules of the game. If you fell a certain amount, your points would be redistributed and you would become a penniless slave. This was a two-day thing and I was sick for the first day so I was born into slavery. After much lobbying the highest class (which had collectivized its points so no one could rise or fall to or from the class) freed the slaves and created a new class at the bottom. They then voted to equally divide all points between all classes. Not only this, but the representative from this group had voted to stand on a chair while giving a speech announcing this while the national anthem of the USSR played. Apparently, what was meant to happen was a revolt where the lower classes and the slaves took power and forced the higher class out. What instead happened was a peaceful and truly communist reform movement. None of this is a joke and all actually happened.

I remember that in my junior year of high school they did this to us and there was a protest of students that lasted almost a week. The reasons where he same too. The problem here was that there were too many students, the cafeteria was too small and one hour wasn’t enough. This resulted in a good 25-30% of the students not being able to eat. And if you didn’t eat then you weren’t going to the whole day because they took away all the vending machines and closed down the snacks store. So it meant 8 hours straight without eating. Also the food they served was disgusting. At the end they had to bring someone over to teach this people how to cook, reopen the store and bring back the vending machines.
IDK what schools you’re going to, but my school (and all the ones in my city) have DELICIOUS Cafeteria food. They sell: burgers, hot dogs, pizza, BBQ ribs, chicken nuggets, fries, ice cream, long johns, poutine, tacos and like 50 others.
Each meal is only 5 bucks and the food actually tastes really good. The vending machines sell chips and pop for like 2 bucks. Plus there’s a McDonald’s and a Starbucks a couple of blocks down.
I’m so privileged.

At my middle school, they implemented this system where depending on your grades, you'd get a different level card, with their being 4 levels. White, the lowest, blue, black, and platinum, the highest. If you had a platinum card, you'd get discounts on school event tickets, and basically bragging rights. Black card was basically the same thing, but not as cool and with lower discounts. If you had at least a blue card, you'd get to go to the gym after lunch, and if you had a white card, screw you. Now nobody really minded this too much, having a white pretty much meant you were just rock stupid, which wasn't very common, but what ticked all us blue cards (nearly 50% of kids, I joke not) is that you'd get to have lunch first depending on your card status. Yep, you got good grades, you ate before everyone else. People came to resent those higher card people and bullying became a big issue. They had to recall the card system when fights broke out. Sidenote, they eventually stopped letting blue cards go to the gym, which only fueled the flame of hatred. Oh and on another occasion, (after they removed the God awful card system) they blocked TH-cam and all other game sites for people with even just 1 F. Which was a whole lot of students. Not to mention, their filter on "unallowed" sites was very vague, and actually ended up blocking sites that impeded on academics. You got 1 F? You don'tget any help, in fact, screw you! You don'teven get the resources to get up that F! In their defense, this is when they were still figuring out implementing laptops into their system. To put it nicely, my middle school had no idea how to handle (the most caustic, radioactive people ever) middle schoolers, and caused a lot of outrage. So glad I'm out of that hellhole.

My high school had open lunch, they threatened to close campus during lunch numerous times, mostly due to litter in the neighborhood, but it never happened, probably because the cafeteria was too small, and it would have required then to change from two lunch periods to three or four. Years before I went to that school there use to be a sidewalk trail that went from the high school to an area that had a Little Caesar's and a donut shop, that sidewalk did get fenced off, because the residents complained about the litter.
This is why we have A lunch and B lunch at school.

Back in High School, in sophomore year Im pretty sure, we had 2 protests in one week. The first one, I don't remember what it was about but it resulted in the benches in the hallways being taken away. So in retaliation, about 100 - 200 students held a sit in during class where they sat on the lockers and floor and stuff because we all wanted our benches back. Anyways, a few kids were suspended but in the end we got the benches back.
