Can confirm, graphic tees still make up the majority of my shirts, especially for my summer wardrobe. Winter will see me alternating between sweaters and graphic tees plus a sweatshirt on top for more warmth and hoods.
my clothes are very subtle
minus my hoodies but thats just cos ill wear any hoodie that is comfortable SRSLY MY PARENTS BOUGHT ME AN 18+ hoodie and i WOULD wear it IF IT WASNT INNAPORPRIATE FOR PUBLIC XD (it looks comfy tho so i keep it)

Dress codes have relaxed a lot! 35 years ago I got sent home for; not being clean shaven, Chest hair sticking out the top of my shirt ( Blond not dark), wearing my uniform (no logos/insignia), having my pager on, and having exposed metal parts ("D" rings for lifting/securing integrated into my workwear). Don't try to work and go to school!!

@@quuirrel19_-sz9pj Chest hair- one offence, sent home with the expectation I'd hurry back. Came back the next day. Pager- second offense, turned it off. Had the boss call the school. Workwear/uniform - third offense. Only had the metal "D" rings on one day because there was a severe winter storm going. Shouldn't have had school going!
I had a uniform at school and the funniest thing was that one of my friends got away with having a bright red streak in their hair for 2+ years and only got told off for it the one time they forgot their PE uniform or wore the wrong coloured socks
Also as a fellow good kid you can get away with so many minor infractions I read fanfiction in class with my laptop screen dimmed as much as possible so the teachers couldn't see from a distance (sometimes even up close if their eyes were bad) and when asked about it I'd just smile and say "I'm conserving the battery life" and teachers would believe me when I told them something happened and I even managed to my teacher to let me do my speech on another day because I'd forgotten my palm cards by crying on cue and I did the same thing to get out of uniform detention (for forgetting my PE uniform) as well as saying it was the first time I'd forgotten. Honestly being the good kid probably also got me out of trouble for other shenanigans I can't even recall. I was always "a joy to have in class" among other things.

I've long since left high school, but same. My final year of school was in a rough city (New Orleans) and the one year I was there was crazy. To stop fights, we were made to walk in one direction around the school, for example. The entire school took lunch at the same time, so lunch was like an hour and a half, maybe? I don't think I ever got a tray, though, because the line was so long and there wasn't anywhere to sit. If you're going to make nearly a 1000 kids take lunch at the same time, maybe give them more seating, yeah? The lines for the snack machines were a little smaller so I just got a bag of chips or something and ate outside.
But the "being good" privilege came in a few different ways. When we lost one of the teachers for a class (and we actually lost several), we were moved to the auditorium for that class. On day one, a "game" was started in which a pillow case was thrown over kids heads and they were beaten by others. I decided to instantly nope out of that prison crap. I sweet-talked a security officer into letting me sit outside the now-empty classroom. I don't sound like the people of New Orleans, so that always made me instantly stand out. That spot still had wifi as the kids had otherwise snatched out all of the ethernet cables in the school for the laptops they gave to us. Or, I would be allowed to go into the library. Got a few interesting perks and trips as well for being the librarian's favorite student.
I also had a bus driver that actively dropped kids off at locations that were not the school 😅. Maybebnot great, but I was not about to rat on her. I never used this to my advantage except for when a Canadian friend asked me to get something on Amazon for him that he couldn't get himself, the first Halo OST. There was a post office down the street from my school so I asked the driver to drop me off there. It was Monday morning and very busy and I didn't get out of the post office until after school started. A police car parked near the school saw me and asked where I was coming from, so I told him I was at the post office. He asked where I was going. When I pointed at the school, he paised for a second and blinked at me and said, "You're the first student I've seen carrying books." I...didn't know how to respond to that, lol.
He asked for a parent's phone number and like an idiot, I gave him my mom's instead of lying. I expected her to have received a call...but she didn't. After like a week, I was miffed on why he never called her, so I just told her myself so I could get ahead of him if he ever did call. My mom wasn't mad, as she knew I wasn't one to skip school or cause trouble. And I pretty much had no way to get to the post office otherwise as the vehicles for the house were always in use for work, before and after the post office hours. It would've been a very long time before I could get to the post office otherwise and I wanted to give my friend his CDs before something could happen to them (given how easy it is for a CD to bw ruined).

Hey Rebecca, this video genuinely helped me get through school. When this came out I was this lonely, paranoid and irritable kid in school who was picked on constantly and never really fit in with anyone besides a few childhood friends. Hearing your explanation of the imaginary audience.. i don’t know, something clicked. It felt like I was heard and honestly the explanation was so gentle and understanding that I just.. stopped having the problem? I mean, not automatically, but over a year or so, I stopped caring. I was more confident, my relationships were better, school got a little easier, I even found the guy that is now my closest friend, and found an online group where i belonged. I found myself, going from a shy lonely girl to a creative and caring boy.
I’m now i’m my final year of high school, and ever since I saw this video once it was first uploaded, I felt a lot more seen. You didn’t say much, but it really resonated with me. I just want to say thank you, Rebecca, for making life so much easier for me- even if you didn’t intend for it. ❤️

I'm pretty sure a lot of schools have this rule and now that I think about it, older, it's still really stupid. I remember having the "no hoodie in class rule" this is because the school didn't want kids to be hiding headphones or airpods under their hoodie and not be able to hear the teacher
That rule is already dogshit by itself. That reason is faker than Kim Kardashian’s thighs. I say “suppression of freedom of self-expression + old ass teacher or teachers just trying to do their jobs and not get interrogated by the outlandishly out-of-touch superintendent” not this fake bullshit.

This one time I was being bulled and they pushes me and a wood chip got stuck in my eye and the nurse came over and looked at me and said, "You'll walk it off!" (After recess I RAN to the bathroom and took it out.. It hurt SO much 😂😂🤷🤷) I was lucky that the wood chip didn't pierce my eye... Sooooo 😳👀

Aside from the basic dress code rules like the ones described here one of my schools (and one of my brothers) banned rolling backpacks, specifically the rolling part of them. This was a problem as sometimes the backpack would get so heavy it'd be very hard to carry them normally. I don't remember what, if any, reason was given for this ban but there you go. That aside my final high school was pretty chill with jackets and we weren't required to wear the school issued one (school uniforms (i.e. school shirts) yes, school jackets no), which was good as I liked using my jacket that had zipper pockets so I didn't have to worry about things falling out of them when my jacket was zipped up all the way.

On picture day, girls have to wear sweaters/cardigans because if your shoulders were showing, you got dress coded. Me and my friends joked about this during lunch by saying stuff like “Shoulders! So scandalous!” and one guy sitting at the table next to us shouted “Put away those shoulders before someone gets pregnant!”. For the rest of the day, we laughed and said that.

I remember in my old high school, we had to wear the school uniform through the school years until we got to wear whatever we wanted when we got to 12th Grade (Year 13 in NZ School Grade). Even though the rules were still the same about exposing clothes, rainbow hair, wearing hats (we were only allowed to wear them at Break times), inappropriate language on clothes, etc.
I used to go to a Russian elementary school, which was HELL. We had to use uniforms occasionally but when we didn’t have to they had such a strict dress code. At a point they had banned wearing black shirts and black pants together; if a girl wore a skirt that didn’t surpass the knees they would immediately send the student home. Plus we couldn’t wear bright coloured clothing because then it would be too “DISTRACTING

I think a lot of people misunderstand that there are dress codes everywhere. It’s just ethics honestly, people think the only reason we have a dress code is to “not distract the boys”. It’s not. Get over it, you can wear your shoulderless top after school.
I'm guessing the girls were allowed a purse because seeing a tampon through a plastic bag would give every teacher a heart attack. I would have loved to see that meeting when they realised what see through bags would mean for half their students. That must have been awkward

I didn't even know school dress codes existed. I know that kids in the UK have to wear uniforms, but I thought everywhere else you could just wear whatever. Every school I've ever been to was completely fine as long as you didn't show up naked.

Back on this side of the river pretty much all schools have uniforms. Private, public, doesn't matter, all have uniforms. And only some high-schools don't. So, yeah. Lucky.

My secondary school in the UK (7th to 12th grade) had uniforms. When I was there (before they demolished the old building & rebuilt it), they didn't mind jeans/sweatpants if they were dark navy blue, dark green, black or any pants that were similar to black, jumpers/sweaters of any colours/names/so on if you couldn't afford the school jumpers or it's in the wash, any shoes of any colour and allowed skirts that showed part of your thighs.
The school didn't do the clear/mesh backpacks, due to thift, mix up of bags or certain personal items, if you catch my drift.

It just ripped." the teacher believed her and didn't do anything. AND SHE WOULD WEAR IT AGAIN! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE TEACHERS?!

The My little pony reference on the graphic tees made me so happy
I was one of those good kids who got away with breaking the rules 😈 In the UK it's 99.9% uniforms, and in my school everything HAD to be the issued branded clothing from a specific shop. No makeup, no dyed hair, girls wore skirts, blah blah blah. Very uncomfortable and very expensive. Well, not only did I refuse to wear skirts, I also wore trousers that were... gasp! *Not standard issue*! As in, my mum got so pissed at the needless cost that she joined my crusade and just bought standard navy dress pants from the department store, as well as fitted business blouses too instead of the baggy, ill-fitting monstrosities at the shop. Cheaper and ironically looked way better. She also taught me makeup that was very subtle: brown mascara, pale pink eyeshadow etc. This being the early 2000s where the fashionable makeup was bright orange and ladled on with a trowel. I even tinted my hair redder with one of those 'wash out in two weeks' kits. I was a little ginger rebel!
But yeah, one day my form tutor pulled me aside and I finally thought I was going to get it, but she just smiled and whispered that she knew I was breaking the rules, but not only was she gonna let my non-issue clothing slide but actually thanked me for wearing makeup that matched my skin tone. And that was it for the rest of the school year. The only rule I hadn't broken was the need for a blazer and tie, and they didn't care 😅

K-8, I went to a charter school that had a strict dress code. There wasn't a "uniform," but there may as well have been, since the rules restricted clothing to the extent that practically every student wore solid-color polo shirts and slacks. I didn't mind it too much since it was what I grew up with, but you will never get me to wear a polo ever again.
Meanwhile, my high school was pretty chill with the code. There were fewer rules than your school Becca, as it permitted graphic t-shirts, pajamas, dyed hair and somewhat-short shorts, and the school tended to waive the rules from time to time. If you wore a hat in class one time, you'd be reprimanded. But if you wore it every day for a month or two? The staff would just ignore the hat.
I don't think dress codes are necessarily bad, they just need to restrict the right things. Personally, I would have a simple rule that everything from the shoulders down to the mid thighs need to be covered, for the sake of modesty.
Having the reputation of the good kid is an amazing tool. It allows you to make change without being labeled as anything bad. I started a grade wide protest against a rule I had in 7th grade regarding assigned lunch seats. The popular kid and I teamed up, because she knew I was going to have my concerns taken seriously. While she did the petitioning, I did the negotiating. It ended up working.

I'm not necessarily the "good kid", but I've always been a mix between class clown and teachers pet. So I make funny remarks and jokes on the lessons but was a minimal disturbance and got my work done. This certainly came in handy with my P.E. teachers, I did what I was told and tried my best but I had rivalries with some of the boys in that class, so everything they'd come and pick a fight I'd fight back and the teachers called out the boys. It really does pay to be on the teachers good side

a. Not nearly everyone, but a fair amount really quickly. This is what I did, but I wouldn’t aim for it, because it is very risky if things don’t go your way. We got 1/3 of the grade within one day. Play to emotions when convincing them. No kid likes school, use this to convince them.
b. Nearly everyone. As many as possible. Get others to spread the petitions on your behalf. People in middle and high school will listen to their friends.
When you feel confident you have enough, or enough per time since you started, go to the dean/principal/whatever. If you are not a frequent flier of suspensions, detentions and/or haven't been expelled before, and you have done it right (you should do this with as little teacher involvement as possible), they should take your concerns seriously. If you are a frequent flier, get someone, preferably a debate champion or teacher’s pet, to argue on your cause’s behalf. When making your case, do NOT play to the same emotions as students. This will make them get defensive. What you want to do is allow yourself to seem as innocent as possible. A couple of “I don’t intend to be disrespectful, but…” followed by something not conceivably offensive in any way shape or form should do the trick. Show them your petition. Make your points, and DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT get mad if it is not going your way. If the law isn’t changed, you can either do one of two things:
A. Organize; for your petition should have had enough support to go to the dean anyway, and the student body should thus be inclined to follow through with the rule. Be maliciously compliant if possible. Your example is people banning “gay”, right? Use gya, or something. Class clowns and popular people come in very handy at this point. It should spread to the student body. The hope here is that it becomes such a hassle to deal with, they change the rule in question, or over-regulate themselves into oblivion. If they crack down, do not get scared, because class clowns will be used to it, for one, and, if there exists a true unity among the student populous, keep going, for they can’t suspend or detain everyone.
B. Go further beyond the student body. Get as many parents and school board members as possible on board. Possibly even the superintendent if necessary. It is very hard to imagine that a unified student body, who is persistent enough to complain to the superintendent, but also respectful enough to not allow themselves to be completely radicalized in opposition, would be completely shut down. But if all else fails, you will have tried, and if they knock you down hard enough, invariably cases of bad behavior will spike anyway. For it is in their best interest to take you seriously, because if they shut a unified body, down, this will only work to strengthen resolve amongst the students. However, if you went for strategy a. of petitioning above, you may not have that unity.
So, in summary. Get as many students involved, then go to the dean, talk respectfully and logically. If they shoot you down, be maliciously complaint (this works best for strategy a. of petitioning) or, if the support for method b. of petitioning is there, get as many teachers, parents, school board members etc. to fight for you as you can. Remember to always be respectful, and good luck. 👍

In my school we have uniforms, but they have HAIR RESTRICTIONS. We weren't allowed to have colored clips, only black. BLACK. NOT EVEN WHITE. The teachers said the other colors were "too distracting". Earrings were not allowed. There was this gal that had a truckload of ribbons in her hair, all a different color and she was the one to say " hey your clips are blue thats not allowed!"
Once at my school that had dress codes we had to wear polos and dress pants. They weren’t really strict and The older grades got away it’s bending the school dress code and I also did this to a minor degree (because I didn’t have any uniform shorts) I wore them in black to pass as navy. one day during class the vice principal barged into the class and had us all stand up so she could inspect our clothes and 3 girls got sent down to the office because they where wearing black pants. Ngl, i was such a lucky kid (still am a little). In middle school I was so oblivious and constantly in a book that not only i skipped most of the bullying experience, but also never got anxious about the way I looked! And by about 10th grade when I started to actively get out of my shell, I've read and watched so much about being yourself, I actually somehow realized that "If I don’t give a single flying hoot about what others look like, why would the others care??"
