My sister was a selective mute. My previous neighborhood thought she was mute, but then they noticed she'd only talk to me, and assumed she was deaf. She just tolerated me more than most people.
My childhood best friend was kinda selectively mute. She was too shy to talk to my family, didn't like strangers, and was afraid of the rest of the kids because they were dickheads and tormented her. So she would whisper in my ear what she wanted and I'd relay that. I learned her hums and body movement. The tiniest of pitch changes in a quiet hum, or her doing a specific head movement meant something different. I was literally her translator, lol.
@@expired3939 we drifted a bit with time but we're back to where we were. We had a trio with another girl who just started hating her, forced me to have two separate friendships with two people I adored when they both started hating each other, and then just forgot that I existed. Moon and I are happily planning another meet up. She loves over an hour away and works nights, so coordinating is a bit rough.
There was this girl in my second grade class that, looking back, probably had selective mutism. She never talked to anyone except for her best friend, however, she used that to her advantage. Those two were always seated together and our teacher never showed any concern towards the girl's lack of communication which makes me think that she had a disorder that the school knew about. However, she still had her way of participating in class, she would just whisper to her best friend when she knew an answer to a question or had an inquiry to make. Her best friend was a very out-going and bold girl which worked really well for the both of them, since she had to vocalize two people. Looking back, the situation was very sweet.
That must've been rough. Mental health is a very serious topic, nowadays people have more understanding about it which is very beautiful. But it's a topic that's still not completely understood. I wish you guys both the best ❤

I have a student who never talks (her parents say she talks at home) and the other teachers are always trying to bully or trick her into talking and I just think that's so shit. Instead, I devised ways for her to participate in games and class without having to talk and guess what? She does just fine in all my classes. So many teachers take stuff personally or are driven by their own egos and I just wish they'd figure out that not everything is about them.

Imagine being a boy just hitting puberty and being used to your kid voice, and not being able to talk for 3 or 4 years. Then when u finally speak u sound like a grown man like imagine how scary that would be
this is insanely accurate, grades 3-4 i was practically mute, im going into middle school this year with fucked up vocal cords that make me sound like corpse when i dont strain them, waiting for my old friends to hear that-
What’s sucks with selective mutism is that it’s not like you can just “start talking”, in almost all cases nobody just decides to stop talking because it’s convenient. For a lot of people trying to talk will cause panic attacks (like it does for me when I go nonverbal) and I hate that people see those who don’t audibly communicate as being “difficult” and are “fixable”
well selective mutism is fixable it just takes time and professional help. Real mutism is caused when the part of your brain that controls speaking (the broca area) is severely damaged - that cannot be easily fixed. Selective mutism is caused by social experiences, like a troubling home environment, and is fixable, but yeah its not gonna be a dramatic over night change and random people saying stuff probably won't help
@@scarlet7960 Over night? People expect you to get over it INSTANTLY right then and there just because they're getting more and more aggravated with your silence!! Sure it's fixable long term, but people seriously expect instant results just from pressuring you, as if somehow adding more anxiety to the situation will make it better. No empathy or understanding about the pressure and anxiety you're going through, just "Oh come on! Just talk, it's not that hard!" meanwhile I'm sitting here like "fck fck fck, what do I say?? M-maybe this...? ...... AAAHHH I can't get it to come out!!! 😭" Seriously, it's PAINFUL. I even got selective mutism online with someone I used to be good friends with because of some drama going on, like literally even typing out a response online gave me the same kind of anxiety, and he just spung my silence into me being some manipulative monster or something when I just physically couldn't break through the psychological barrier stopping me from answering...
Not a selective mute, but I'm a "quiet kid" as my parents sometimes call me. I definitely sympathize with you. I hate it when my entire family, especially my distant relatives like my jerk cousins and aunts, try to pry and pry at me until I "open up" and "tell them what's wrong" when there's nothing wrong, I just enjoy peace and quiet and that's offensive to them. All they really do is make me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. It must be terrible for you to deal with that on the daily.
I mean, I think she handled this very gracefully. Not namedropping them and just giving them fun nicknames. That's how it should be done. I've heard awful stories of teachers since before my time but my experience with teachers is just this: love them or hate them, they're all just trying to do their jobs with varying degrees of success and enthusiasm. Some of them are outright bad at their jobs but they're still trying to do it right and at the end of the day they're dying to go home just as much as you are. Some of them aren't gonna bother with you more than absolutely necessary and some of them are gonna be busybodies but I think it usually comes from a good and earnest place where they want the best for you.
"If you're going 80 mph, how long does it take to go 80 miles?" God that's me. EDIT: GUYS IT WAS A JOKE, PLEASE EDIT2: At this point I can't even tell who is joking and who is being genuine, so let me break it down for you guys, gals, and everyone else, in order to go 80 miles at a speed of 80 miles per hour, you need an hour. One Hour. 80 miles per hour also means an hour per 80 miles. Yeah it's often like that^^ If you get close to shy people they can be the most talky (?) / they really tend to never stop talking people you know. (Like myself) if i talk with a random (and that only happens if this Person talks first to me) than its an extremely short answer But if i talk with my best friend i can talk for 1-2hours straight without letting her say one thing
I can get almost any quiet kid to talk to me and it’s totally not because I force them “god dam it billy🔫u know what happens if u don’t talk to me” wait what who said that
The fact that you weren't been bullied for being mute is surprising yet wholesome, meaning that your classmates had dignity and weren't acting to you like dipshits for whatever gain.
I remember knowing a mute girl in kindergarten and the whole class did't care that she didn't talk. We would talk to her and play with her and she was actually one of my best friends. Also I would like to make it clear that she was not complexly mute, If you said a word and asked her to repeat it she would, she just did not know English. We tried to teach her this way, but I don't think she ever learned anything from us.
Hi, I was selectively mute for 5 years and I wanna say thank you for being her friend its not easy to make friends with selective mutism or mute fully, I had friends but some people aren't as lucky.
Thats so sweet from you guys,i have an american friend (english is not my native language) I’ve met him on a game,I only teached one word from my language and seeing he trying to spell it is so fun,he also helps me to talk in english.👍
Coming back to this video after I pass middle school and now in high school got me really nostalgic. like started to choke up and shit. But all things stayed, this still applies to me with the labels and whatnot. But we miss you tabbes and hope you come back ❤❤
Your school would never be able to handle a mute kid that physically couldn’t talk like wow. The teachers would straight up bully the mute kid throughout all their years of school
I feel like if she actually was me at the school would have known and they would have informed the teachers. But because They were aware that she could talk she chose not to because there was nothing to tell them otherwise They were probably like "okay we need to get this child to start speaking because it's not good if they don't. "
Felt the same way with social anxiety and some other thing that may have been slight paranoia. I dont know why but growing up I was in this mindset of if I didn't get the smallest things like a paper do on time , or lost homework that I would just fail and have no future. I had breakdowns were I cried and people thought I was just very sensitive, I mean probably but they made fun of me because it wasn't " average behavior " .Some teachers told me I was to old to cry , and even I couldn't explain why I did, recently I thought about this during quarantine and realize its probably from pressure in general were I would here things like grades matter so much for your future and other random stuff , I mean it does but my mind pushes that to astronomically high levels of stress. Apparently schools cant realize pressuring students so much isn't healthy for mental stability, and when teachers tell you to suck it up that doesn't help In any way and probably hurts that mindset more. I'm just glad I had good friends who could make me laught because it brought me down from my problems that weren't problems and impossibly high standards and made me realize I'm fine , I'm a A student and I should try to focus on these friendships instead of small things that won't really matter in 20 years. I think I'm way luckier than most being able to realize this , and maybe now I can try to calm myself down better in these random situations that my mind pushes into bigger problems even though it isn't that bad and it will get better.
There was a boy in my year at school who was a selective mute. He supposedly talked at home (or so I’d heard) and he actually had a TH-cam channel that most of us found and watched out of curiosity because we’d never heard his voice. He was friends with a friend of mine and every now and then I’d see him whisper something to my friend, but that was it. He’d never talk aside from that. The teachers were so chill with it though. I guess it might be related to the fact that I’m British and participation has nothing to do with grades in British schools (which I know isn’t the case in the US). He was respected and everyone was kind to him. The only issue was that when he started a new class, the teacher didn’t know he didn’t speak. And even that wasn’t an issue because when his name was called in the register and the teacher was confused when he didn’t respond, half the bloody class would explain all at once that he’s a selective mute. After that the teachers would just memorise where he sat and check his seat for registration, rather than call his name. It’s a shame your experience wasn’t similar. It really should have been. He was a pleasant guy. I wonder how he’s doing.
I'm British and unfortunately had the same experience as this video. Teachers threatening my grades, purposely marking down my assignments and tests even though participation didn't count. Just because I didn't talk, they tried to find a way to punish it out of me.
Wish that was the case for me. Everyone acts like I don't exist. I've only heard people talking about me a few times, but from everyone's vibe I know they definitely say a lot of stuff behind my back or just think I'm a jerk. Barely anyone knows I have selective mutism but the people who do are really nice about it. It just sucks how clueless some people are. People used to tease me for being quiet, not so much now but it's so annoying. Like just leave me alone bro.
I was “the quiet kid” for the longest time. It would genuinely shock people if I made a noise. Even after getting into high school I rarely talked, and that followed me to my first job as well. The first time I swore at work was talked about for actual weeks by my coworkers like it was the herald of the apocalypse or something. In truth, I just like to listen and drop some sarcastic comment in when people least expected it.
I remember visiting one of my mom's friends. And when I finally said something everyone gasped and said. “Oh my god! She speaks! I thought she was mute” because I am quiet, the teachers in elementary would have to lip my name in cause I knew the answer but was too anxious that they would be upset if I answered
I used to be a mute too all the way till 3rd grade. No one except my parents and brother knew how i sound. They probably heard me sneeze if they're lucky enough. My classmates thought i had an issue where I physically was not able to speak. I never used the school bathroom(never asked to go) and my teacher was so used to me being a mute that she would ask me if i would like to go to the bathroom 2 times a day. And yeah i had nicknames like tongueless/mute but other than that I was not bullied... I transferred to a new school later and made a friend for the first time in that new school just by writing to eachother on a notebook. I started talking to her in half a year and made a few more friends later on which lasted for a good 10 years. I no longer have friends, back to being a loner who doesn't speak. But i can still respond/talk a bit with people if i need to. Though i still have social anxiety and panic (even during phone calls) When I watched "komi-san can't communicate", I related to her so much that my life flashed before my eyes ngl. Loved the anime

It frustrates me that your teachers treated you that way. Your band teacher especially, that was messed up. I used to teach third grade, and one year I had a kid who was selective mute. I had been encouraged to try to communicate with her in other ways but also to try to get her to talk, and I really didn't know any better. Years later I learned from a friend, who was still selective mute as an adult, that it's not always controllable and trying to force someone to speak can exacerbate the problem. Fast forward another few years when I was a swim teacher, I had a kid I swam regularly who didn't speak to me once, and I just adapted to it rather than trying to force him to talk, and it really wasn't difficult. It would be nice if educators were taught more about these sorts of things in our thousands of hours of required meetings and professional development.
I sort of disagree. Helping someone will sometimes require uncomfortable situations. The band teacher was ineffective, but you need to be real with people to try and help them
@@novusregnum To solve a problem you need to know what is causing it first, though. There is no point in taking random medication when you are sick, that could actually have the reverse effect. None of her teachers knew why she didn't talk, and they still tried to solve it by threatening her.
Exactly 😬 the way these teachers treated her makes me think that's probably how they treat autistic children, or children with some other type of difficulties in communication. Its traumatising being on the other end of that. If someone is actually refusing to speak even when prompted by adults then maybe... News flash.. something is actually wrong, and they're not just "shy" or "defiant"? :/
This was back in 11th grade. I had a friends who despite the fact I was friends with him for 5+ years at the time, never once herd him say a word. Till one day in clothing and textiles (like sewing and making Pillows) we had a substitute who didn’t understand that he just didn’t talk and was getting agitated with him. She said “I’ll count to five and if you don’t speak I’ll tell your teacher to fail you for the year” my friend didn’t budge. Teacher: “ok then. 1, 2, 3, 4” my friend: f**k off. Haven’t herd an explosion of laughter since then.
And who exactly controls that? Like yeah sure you and your parents could sue him or shit like that, but then its statement vs statement and nothing happens.
im an esl teacher in taiwan with a student with selective mutism. the students are mostly graded on their speaking ability. for her we make an exception. i just give her a list of questions that i would normally ask the other students. her written answers are always perfect. best in the class. she may not speak, but she gets english.
I know this came out a while ago but I had to make a comment. Teachers forcing kids to speak in class is incredibly ableist. The person could have any number of reasons for not speaking (social anxiety, ASD, etc) and forcing a child to speak is an abelist practice that continues to this day. It's so frustrating to see teachers treat children and youth this way.
I think Tabbes was a selictive mute. A selictive mute is a person who doesn't talk to people except maybe family or close friends. Its not that the person can't talk because they can but they just get can’t talk at all if that makes sense. Overall though people who are selective mutes are usually very talkative with people like family.

@@AirrackFanReuploads Language is taught emotionally through a child, which is how it becomes a first language. It is pretty amazing how hostile humans can behave toward someone who merely chooses not to speak. I know from personal experience of being Selectively Mute (autism). My advice to anyone who has this issue (or who wants to be mute for mindfulness, etc) is this: DON'T let other people walk all over you just because you don't speak. It's sadly harder to do this as a child, especially if your parents don't support you. Most humans (especially those with weak egos) find it annoying and even threatening when someone refuses to speak to them. The sad truth is, most humans are complete dumpster-fires when it comes to fairness: they will not treat you well if you don't show them that you can and will defend yourself. Personally, I'd suggest ridding yourself of these types of people, but, for the times when you must deal with them, remember the following: 1. Don't let people walk all over you. There is a huge population of bullies in this world. It sounds like most of the teachers in this video were just bullies who "got older". 2. Most bullies are cowards with poor emotional control. A good tactic is to be more prepared than they are. Inform them that harassing a person with a disability is a crime, and start documenting how they treat you. 3. Find alternative ways to communicate (when necessary). Examples include...: a. Learn Sign Language. Yes, this is challenging, but completely possible. You can at least learn enough to make strangers not harass you. They will assume you are deaf, and treat you better. b. Use pen-and-paper (carry a notepad), text (phone), or some other written form of communication. 4. If you truly do not speak, then I suggest telling people: "I cannot speak," rather than "I don't want to speak." Just remember: almost no one on the Earth is "truly Mute"; most of the people who do not speak are actually Deaf, and while most of them technically 'can' speak, they don't want to (nor should they be pressured to). No fair-minded person would suggest a Deaf individual should be pressured to speak if they don't want to - so why should you be made to feel pressured? Your voice is part of your body, and you decide what to do with your body. Any human being who thinks you "owe them" or "owe society" is, by definition, a childish, closet Authoritarian - too-afraid to let other people live their own lives. 5. Research and Study the ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act. Businesses and Public Entities have a legal requirement to reasonably accommodate you if you have a Speech Issue/Disability. Do not blindly assume you do not have a disability: I spent over 30 years not realizing I am autistic because no one put 2+2 together. If you're not in America, hopefully your country has an equivalent. Find it, and memorize the key points. 6. If you want to do some further extra reading, look up the notions of "Positive" vs "Negative" "Liberty". These ideas deal with the concept of fairness in society. They may help you put feelings into words. For example: your Right to control your own voice is a "Negative Liberty" - which means it is a liberty that ought to be free from interference by other people. --- In regards to this TH-cam video: it seems plausible that the Middle School teacher staged puking in the trash can in order to pressure you to talk. 1. She wouldn't let you leave. 2. She coughed in a trash can and told you to "Get the teacher down the hall." 3. From your description of the teacher down the hall, it seems like she was taking her sweet time trying to get you to speak, rather than rushing to help her friend. 4. Afterward, the puking teacher harassed you about "How far you would go with 'not speaking'". Seems to me like she was referring to the fact that you wouldn't crack - even during her possibly-fake "death" scene. Regardless of whether or not she was faking it, she was still completely out-of-line to harass you the way she did. If she did that to my child (autistic), I'd make sure the only job she could get at a school would be janitorial. I'm sorry your parents were not only unsupportive, but literally part of the problem.
->3. it incrediable that you cant point out that teacher and assume she taking her sweet time instead help . How can she know someone is dying if tabbes not give the information clearly ( dont say if you were that teacher you would start knowing and running right away) 🌚 . :)))) you dont even understant the other person view + conclusion though a simple video part give zezo evidence about that teacher 🌚

Watching this now that I'm older made me realize that she was probably traumatized as a child and her being mute was a trauma response. Those teachers were TERRIBLE at handling that. Part of being a teacher means they are tested on their psychological understanding on kids, it's literally a part of college curriculum. They did not do their job accordingly.
I remember back in high school I use to be the mute kid in my algebra 2 class because I found the subject so hard that I refuse to talk to anyone or ask for help out of frustration and now that I look back on it I do not know why I did. It was to the point where I refused to stop paying attention in class and not do my homework
That's most teachers in public schools, they like to power trip on your kids and threaten/blackmail them. Don't send your kids to public school if you love them.
They don't realize singling out those students and sending them to guidance counselor is a backlash. It just makes us feel even more out if place and not want to speak even more. The only thing that made me want to talk was when I was with friends that spoke to me despite knowing how quiet I am
...therapy would've helped in my case, at least. I guess it depends on why you were quiet, eheh. I think it could've helped in Tabbes's case, too, since it sounded like abuse. At the same time, she's Korean so talking about it would've gotten her in trouble with her family @.@
there was this girl in elementary school who never talked to the point where the teachers accepted it and made her write down, or whisper her answer into the teacher's ear for class participation, Eventually the music teacher broke her down. She doesn't speak loudly but she'll whisper a conversation with you, she's really sweet
In 5th grade in my school in another class, There was a girl who was a selective mute. The only things she answered were yes or no questions, but some people heard that she talked at home it was cool to know someone like that

Ngl this reminds me of why the school systems need more education about why people might not speak. Aside from the fact Tabbes possibly DID have an unconscious reason for going silent for that long, there’s tons of other reasons kids might not talk. Nonverbal autism, selective mutism, severe anxiety, the list goes on. Teachers trying to force them and threatening them with bad grades (or a bad LIFE tbh from that one teacher wow) isn’t going to work, it just makes them feel worse.
Exactly! There's honestly so much more I wish teachers were educated on, and I wish the school system was better at handling certain things. Every person on this planet is different, and every child in school is the same. We all have needs but I feel like some teachers only know how to help and deal with neurotypical and non-disabled people, or just kids with what is seen as a "normal" experience (which when you add up all the different experiences someone can have, normal is in the minority). Teachers should take time to learn about each student and different kinds of needs different students might have. Not to mention communicate with them and learn how to listen and accommodate ("listen" used to describe actually taking in information a student conveys, whether it's verbal or non-verbal communication). Honestly I could go on and on but I'll shut up now
On the topic of, I had active puberphonia for three years in middle and high school. I might as well have been mute, as my voice was so frickin useless I talked as little as I could, even around my friends. Looking back on it, some of the things people said about my voice (before and after transitioning to my mature one) are actually really messed up to someone that knows the disorder. They said those things because it's not a well-known disorder, yeah, but they were still mega-traumatizing to hear.
I had this thought that schools end up bringing out the worst in everyone, cuz of how their run & their circumstances Like they're often under-funded, have to value grades over education, have overly long hours, etc, etc, you can fill in the rest
Schools need more guidance counselors. Ones who can actually do their job. Right now, teachers are so incredibly overworked and are held to insane expectations. They have to teach their course materials but also, in many cases, learn how to administer medication, but also are expected teach life skills instead of the parents but also know so much about mental health AND how to handle them. That's way too much, crosses into too many different fields. Let teachers teach and let the other professionals focus on what they need to.

It happened during my tech and engineering class. I didn’t talk for 4 weeks in that class and we had a presentation to do. I had to opened my mouth and this boy looked at me with big eyes like he’s some anime kawaii desu boy. After that, he said, “Oh my god! She can talk!”
I was a blat belt by 7th grade, but learned karate at one of those "violence is the lastest of last resort" kind of places, so when I'd get bullied, I'd literally just roll with the punches and let them get tired/bored of it. Looking back, I should have kicked them in the temple.
Dear Chukeul Gadrt I know. Threw my bully into (and nearly through) a closed window. Though I was regarded as the "nice kid". So in my case the teachers actually looked into why the "nice kid" throws 'some dude' into glass window. Got detention. Bully got disiplinary penalty. AAAND crap from my parents. Was the right thing to do though. You are GOING to get a stiff breeze in your face if you stand up to being bullied. From the bullies. AND the system. I can attest to that sadly. BUT: You HAVE to stand up to being bullied. Otherwise it ruins you emotionally. You HAVE to show in your behaviour that you are the good guy to all the other people that are NOT your bullies. It is *your* propaganda to proove, that you are in fact the being the victim. Because the bullies usually play the 'victim'-card when you go to the teachers/authority and report them.
Chukeul Gadrt i yeeted a bar stool at my bully once and he got suspended in school for a week, 9 to 5 alone in a sideroom, i got to stay home for a week. ay lmao
I was a really quite kid. My teacher had to make a goal for me to raise my hand at least once everyday. One time I was staying after school and she went up to another student and said, "I need you to raise your hand more than five times a day, okay?" Then she went up to me and said, "Nice job on raising your hand one time!"
We had a mute kid as well he didn’t speak through out primary and high school, no one knows his voice and not that he was a lonely kid he had a decent amount of friends and wasn’t even bullied he was even known to be shifty at times. We don’t know why he doesn’t speak or if he even has a reason...but we’re family friends so I found out he’s actually REALLY loud at home so me hearing this really shocked me ...but yeah he never speaks
Once my teacher asked me the same thing, "Are you this quiet in your home too? " and I said No. It was kinda annoying because I didn't like my classmates anyways and only spoke when asked (for 2 years). Sometimes they even bullied me for it (ofcourse behind my back but I listened) and called me nickname "Silencer" (I still don't know if that's cool or not). My teachers in 1st grade legitimately thought there was something wrong with me, because my parents hammered it into my head that you mustn't talk to strangers. So the only time I spoke to anyone, I had to face the wall. Looking back at it I think there was something wrong with me as well

Those two were always seated together and our teacher never showed any concern towards the girl's lack of communication which makes me think that she had a disorder that the school knew about. However, she still had her way of participating in class, she would just whisper to her best friend when she knew an answer to a question or had an inquiry to make.
Selective mutism is caused by social experiences, like a troubling home environment, and is fixable, but yeah its not gonna be a dramatic over night change and random people saying stuff probably won't help
nonverbal? are you autistic? out of curiosity lol
I even got selective mutism online with someone I used to be good friends with because of some drama going on, like literally even typing out a response online gave me the same kind of anxiety, and he just spung my silence into me being some manipulative monster or something when I just physically couldn't break through the psychological barrier stopping me from answering...
what worked for me was gradual steps. Like, years level gradual. Eventually, I was able to talk. Still not perfect but much better
Remember you all: If you become teachers, remember that there is always the chance that some of them become youtubers, and will talk about you.

To everyone here, you are loved, things will be ok, never give up, don’t lose hope, keep going in life, you are loved always. ❤

I don’t think so, because that’s usually something that’s present from when they’re a small child. This was just for 3 years.

No, it's overused
Personally, I'd suggest ridding yourself of these types of people, but, for the times when you must deal with them, remember the following:
Examples include...:
---
In regards to this TH-cam video: it seems plausible that the Middle School teacher staged puking in the trash can in order to pressure you to talk.
1. She wouldn't let you leave.
2. She coughed in a trash can and told you to "Get the teacher down the hall."
"most humans (especially those with weak egos)"
ok Mr super villain 🤦
->3. it incrediable that you cant point out that teacher and assume she taking her sweet time instead help .
I had this thought that schools end up bringing out the worst in everyone, cuz of how their run & their circumstances
Like they're often under-funded, have to value grades over education, have overly long hours, etc, etc, you can fill in the rest
Teachers shouldn't be abusing students by threatening/blackmailing them to do things. When you do that to children it dramatically affects them.

Literally, my brother NEVER talked, to the point where everyone thought he was deaf, and everyone would come to me in the hall, in class, at recess asking if he was mute, deaf, etc. and why he never talked. Yeah no he's just super quite, except when we are home, then he screams his head off. how nice!
That's because he's comfortable with the people he knows other than complete strangers
He might have selective mutism. Might want to look into that.
