Monoprice Monolith M1060 | SOUND DEMO & Comparison to AKG 701

- Finally got the sound demo done, and the Headphone Recording Rig complete :) I know this vid is long but I allowed the full clip of each song to play on each headphone so comparisons can be more accurate for everyone watching.
I took some music from epidemic sound (so I dont get muted by youtube) and made a single file so i can keep consistency between future reviews etc.
Thanks for watching and i hope everyone can get some info from this.
Mics used are Rode M5 (courtesy of Z-Reviews for pointing out his recording hardware) Run into a Zoom H5 Recorder.
Headphones are powered by a modi 2 uber and magni 2 uber (schiit stack)
Let me know if there are any future comparisons i can do - and ill try and get the headphones to do so.

Alex Mattaliano Well through what I like to call "double EQ" (your mic and my crappy iems) the sound of the M1060 is richer and it has that magical bass thump that's just enough and not overwhelming. The 701 is definitely brighter but still very enjoyable. That being said the 701 lack that magic touch of the bass (at least to my preferred sound). The way you let me listen to the M1060 first makes me feel like I'm listening to music and so when you put the 701 on it felt obvious that I'm listening to a pair of headphones. Imaging is great on both sets, the 701 has the advantage with brighter highs but the M1060 overcome it with amazing details. The 701 definitely has bigger sound stage but not too far from the M1060. Overall I like the M1060 better because it seems to fit my preferred sound signature perfectly and I love the details I get from it. The 701 is pretty good but it's not for me.
Alex Mattaliano If you are asking about the sound quality of the recording, then it's very good and convenient. I have to download a dedicated browser just to listen to Zeos' demos but his demos allow me to discover great songs that I didn't know before. Quality wise I would prefer yours over his just a little bit. But I like to watch you both, no better nor worse than each other.
Alex awesome job! Just please, please do the same demo with HD800. Especially because they are completely different beast it would be interesting to hear the difference!

Ivan Šantić Btw if you are wondering about the signature the HD800 is bright with one of the best sound stage and imaging. A bit lacking in bass though, after all it is Sennheiser we're talking about here. One of the best vocal and acoustic or classical but not so good for everything else. If you want to enjoy different genres with the 800s EQ is recommended. It is also very sensitive to whatever it is receiving meaning it is very picky and like to play hard to get with your source and DAC/AMP. If Alex however could get his hands on a HD800S then you'll get to hear Sennheiser's magic sound. They have successfully seduced me with the 598 after all

I can already tell that the M1060 probably has better tonality, fuller sound and better bass. But the AKG K701 wins in treble extension
That's false detail on the AKG. Extra sizzle due to distortion, plus treble boost.

This is a great way to do a sound demo. I had the M1060's recommended and I can hear that I would not like them.

I have both of these headphones and this comparison is pretty on the mark. What I really want is the M1060 planar drivers inside the AKG701 earcups and the headband from a HD600. I think that would be perfect.
Fantastic demo. Audio quality is on POINT.
The shrill almost harsh false extended highs of the 701 sure do contrast with the rich full sound of the 1060s. Both are great cans, I just cant do those highs on the 701 - though I do wish the 1060s had just a tiny little sprinkle of that "sizzle" to their highs. But overall, I dont think anyone can deny the rich tone and full lows of the 1060s.
If you are taking requests, I would LOVE to see some ZMF headphones demo'd up against each other and whatever else you have lying around. lol
Alex, awesome demo. Listened to this on a HD700 and LCD2. I can see how both these headphones would be excellent. For those interested, get the M1060 if you want a smoother sound that will play well with a range of music. The 701, with it's brighter sound and larger soundstage will work well for classical, jazz, orchestral, etc. Not that the M1060 wouldn't (similar to the LCD2, it still works well for acoustic and small chamber recordings).

agreed on the sound signature, i own a pair of 1060's any they are insanely smooth and responsive, i find they release a sound much quicker giving little response to echos and the like but still sound insanely wide. Interested in listening to the k701's but based on the demo i would say that they are brighter and have much more pronounced highs where a symbol will reverb more. Compare 7:54 to 8:28, listen to the rattle on the tambourine, it cuts out much sooner on the m1060's and lingers a bit with the k701's. I think this has more to do with dynamic vs planar but could be tuning as well.

It's a good thing I saw this sound demo! I almost bought the AKG 701. Even though they sound good through my M&K 2.1 setup, the lack of bass would have disappointed me. The M1060 sounds great through my setup! Even though it will sound different if I was actually listening to the headphones, but you do get an idea of what the sound will be like.

Thank you for the sound demo, sound quality seems on point and everything is positioned correctly. The 701 definitely has slightly more sibilance on some tracks Are you able to attach an audio file in flac or similar format to download, also maybe a track list? 11:20, 15:10, 17:15, 17:56, 20:35 the M1060 sounds truly magical. I'm in the UK and feel sorry for those that missed out on this 2017 bargain of the year! I'm a Z review fan and I got a feeling certain people are going to start saying crap about coping Z's sound demos etc (it's just human nature). Keep doing what you're doing. This setup seems better to me than Z's, I think the impact is coming through better. Could be the song choices, but whatever it is I like this more. Not to mention the far better idea of making it comparative between two different headphones, which is the only way it should ever be done if the information is going to pass through TH-cam and whatever people have to listen on at home.

I find the AKG has far more textured vocals. But the Monoprice seems more fun in the sense that it reproduces actuall bass^^

Buddy, I like your way of doing sound demo with at least 2 headphones for comparison. unlike Z who does it with a single HP every time, we might miss the sound signature from TH-cam compression, different HP we own n all the shit. Keep up the good work! Skywalker looks horrible tho.
I would love a headphone with the clarity of the 701s but the bass response of the m1060's. The m1060s don't seem to present a true sound I think due to slightly elevated mids (to my ears listening through hd600s and then studio monitors). The 701s may be a bit too elevated in the highs - I imagine they might become fatiguing after a while. Thanks for posting this!

I don't know what you're talking about, M1060's do not excel at mids at all. This is a common critique of them in many reviews, and I am an owner of them
awesome demo , the 1050s sound great across the plain and i thing is a real bargain, hopefully they will fix the head-band/rest issue and the wood ... if not we just have to deal with it cos im buying them!!!!!!!!!!!
The 701's have been on my wish list, but they seem very "flat" compared to the 1060's, to my ears. I'll have to wait for the consensus on whether the QC issues are fixed in next shipment. Very good demo.

It feels like the left channel on your AKGs is consistently louder
its the same on both, watch the L and R on the recorder. The left channel is louder on both, might be the balance on his computer is off to one side, or the recordings have more mixed to one side (the left)
i can hear it 2 the left is noticeably louder
and btw you can see in the video the left channel is always louder then R :/
the speed of the planar M1060 is very evident...far more musical sound to me, and the bass is very quick and engaging
thanks for the comparison. i must say the monos are much richer, the 701s seemed to have an elevated response in the upper half of the sound spectrum. of course, the real test would be an on-ears listen to both. i have grado 60s and very much like them. i also have a pair of grado ps1000s that i have yet to put to the test. i am waiting for a good headphone amp to come my way....hifitommy
Waiting for that showdown u talked about in the comment section. Subbed (y) . I liked monolith overall. But I liked voice in 701. Of course my headphones are not that great. Whats your take on voice.
I might be convinced to pull the trigger on the M1060 next time they are in stock. Seem like a great value with glowing 1st impressions. However, comparing to the K701 wasn't a fair comparison for me personally. I have the Q701 and the K7XX (for some reason), and hardly touch them. A little too anemic and analytical for me. I easily prefer the richer tone of the M1060. I only pull out the K7XX for the wide soundstage.
Alex Mattaliano oh yes, and I apologise for not commenting on the quality of the video. It was quite awesome and beneficial to compare like that. look forward to future comparisons, especially anything in the Hifiman or Audeze line.

Yo, I thought the Ringing on the M1060 wasn't so drastic, but man it is noticeable even in a recording. The 702 are considerably sharper and have some sibilance but nothing some good EQ could fix.
more airy more clarity, reverberation in k701....but very bass light.... m1060 more bass more full... but I wouldnt say k701 is bad. Both does things differently.

Mod the 701's earpads. I have ZMF ori pads on my 702's, real leather and give the bass a nice bump. Much better sounding headphone now. Listening on LCD-2's.
Yeah I like the M1060 better. The sound is so full. The low end is extremely extended. I have a Pair of HE-400i, I'd like to see how they compare against the M1060s.
Overall the M1060 is more pleasing, but vocals are clearer on 701, but need more bass.
yeah, i think that if i had the 701's still id appreciate them more, but i do still prefer the m1060, ill have to grab them back from the person i gave them to so i can just listen to um back to back, as u age ur ears change preferences lol, i learned that from my car stereos :D
Nice job - if only the 1060's weren't built like crap they would be a great deal. Also the price away from the US dollar is horrible - but still might buy them..

sound is so small with no sound stage on the akg's its awesome how some people hear how bright they are and like them more than the monolith..
t-50s are for monitoring music, m1060 are for actually enjoying the music.

Talk about wiping the floor with the AKGs. No comparison. The Monolith is super resolved and smooth as silk. The AKG sounds rough as guts in comparison. Thank you Alex.
Looking forward to further comparisons of headphones done like this Alex... It's infinitely more useful than just reading a review. And you've managed to record the cans very precisely...which is critical in a shootout such as this.
The Mic seems to be picking up nice soundstage as well, It sounds like the AKG has better Mids & Highs, and the Monoprice has better Bass.

Except for overall tonal balance this kind of demo video is a little frustrating.
The crazily wide soundstage and ultra low distortion at all frequencies that an open-back planar headphone does *effortlessly* will not be obvious in a vid that the viewer will be watching at home . . . . on lesser quality, higher distortion drivers (whether they be speakers or 'phones).
For example, a test exactly like this between the Nighthawk and the HifiMan HE400S would show you that the Nighthawks have fuller bass . . . but there ENDs the Nighthawk's lead, when played side by side in person the HE400S is miles better because of lower distortion, greater inner detail and spatial definition.

Which portable amp is good with m1060?
I asked for a PORTABLE amp because all my other stuff are portable. Off to research time.

ok, 1060 sound a little smoother and warmer than K701, and K701 sound a little crisper, and sound stage is wider

An abyss of difference, much better the m1060 monolith, the winner by far! The AKG has many highs and degrades too much to the middles and lows, nothing subtle.
monolith has better lower end very warm sounding. ..akg more flatter, clearer sounding could use some more lower end and would be very good ...
i feel the K701 been 1/2 price of M1060, is the real bargain here.
Right now K701 retail about $180 on ebay shipped.
They sound so lively,, very very planar,, beautiful sound,, great price,, to bad I cant buy them in the EU :-(

The price will be closer to $400 including shipping. Then you'll also have to pay the import fee which is country dependent. If you still want to buy it you should wait a bit longer (the restocking date is April so you have to wait) because the first batch has issues with the cable connectors and the wood cracking around the hinges. Not all suffer from this, I don't have these issues but we'll see about the wood cracking. They offer 5 year warranty but because you'll have them shipped overseas it might not be worth it with these issues. So if you still want them I advice you to wait until Monoprice fixes this.
Wierd.. I preferred the akg701. The highs felt much better and articulate and having more detail both micro and macro in mids and highs, especially at 3.20. Similarly at 4.20 where the drums felt much better on k701. Listening with hd598. (of course these tests need to be taken with a grain of salt because it has the characteristics of the mic and playback headphone added). The m1060 felt much more fuzzier in the highs. 6.47 is the only place where I preferred the m1060 for the male vocals (I think the m1060 is too fuzzy, while k701 needs a little more Midbass and soul.. So the sweetspot lies somewhere in between, but for me I think it is closer to k701 than the m1060). The next song also I felt female vocals were better on m1060 but I think the voice itself was quite a bit nasal to begin with.
Judging bass with hd598 is just wrong and hence I refrained from that. But once again even in this area I think the k701 was cleaner and quicker, just needs a bit more Midbass to give a little more soul, and of course that would steal a bit of the perceived speed. 14.49 once again I felt the k701 was better in everything - bass speed, highs clarity and articulation..
I think the k701 is a bit midpeaky though.. Slightly a bit sibilant with female vocals. But the highs are so damn good, and I think the bass is also really good.
Thanks for the effort. Can you do a sound demo of Hd650 and k701 anytime? And I think I should check out the k712 some-time. The fr seems to be like it fixes whatever I had found to be not perfect on the k701 now.. Less midpeakyness and more bass extension, and slightly a bit more Midbass.
AKG not a chance.. 35 dollar pair of Superlux 66b will do much better.....AKG lower basses missing the treble too much// missing its low end thus making its upper treble sound pronounced somewhat more strident (sibilance is present) I sure could not listen for 2long with those AKG's
