Monoprice Monolith M1060 | SOUND DEMO & Comparison to AKG 701
Finally got the sound demo done, and the Headphone Recording Rig complete :) I know this vid is long but I allowed the full clip of each song to play on each headphone so comparisons can be more accurate for everyone watching.
I took some music from epidemic sound (so I dont get muted by youtube) and made a single file so i can keep consistency between future reviews etc.
Thanks for watching and i hope everyone can get some info from this.
Mics used are Rode M5 (courtesy of Z-Reviews for pointing out his recording hardware) Run into a Zoom H5 Recorder.
Headphones are powered by a modi 2 uber and magni 2 uber (schiit stack)
Let me know if there are any future comparisons i can do - and ill try and get the headphones to do so.

A quick review of my Definitive Technology BP10 (original versions from the mid-90s) I attempted to find info on these before i purchased them and was, for the most part, unsuccessful, so i am putting my 2cents out there. These are running through an Onkyo TX-NR838 and the pre-outs of which are hooked into an ADCOM GFA-5500. The audio is supplied through a roku running off a plex server. First ...

    Thank you for posting. I bought a pair of BP10's when they first came out and still have them. Although I love them, after listening to other high end speakers, I'm finding these may be too bright. Maybe it's my room or the music I listen to. Was thinking of adding a sub or maybe an EQ to tame the highs.

      i found the amp making a HUGE difference on this, i always ran them on an adcom gfa5500, then i tried them on a B&k, both rated at the same wattage, but the B&K sounded so weak, and thin, the b&k was also less than half the weight of the adcom, and i found that interesting. On the adcom, it sounds sooooo much fuller and a lot better lowend.

    The fact that these towers go down to 20hz is truly a huge feat of engineering. Although def tech still makes bipolar speakers, they made a huge mistake by switching towards putting powered subs in all of them. But hey, at least we got these. I hope mine last for my entire lifetime

    Whats the difference between Bp10 and Bp10b?

    • @JesusISdaonlyway
      @JesusISdaonlyway 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you were asking Alex, but I come by every now and then to see if he's posted reviews of his BP20'S and BP30'S yet. Still waiting Alex.... still waiting 😏. But if you haven't already found out, there are a few differences between the two. The 10s have soft dome tweeters while the b's have aluminum. The b's drivers were designed by Definitive, while the 10s used Vifa drivers. The driver configuration in the b's is positioned the same front and back, while the 10s are slightly staggered (the rear drivers being mounted roughly an inch higher than those on the front. The 10s are about a half-inch wider (9") while the 10b's are half inch deeper (12") both are 42" tall. Word among owners is that the 10b's are a bit higher reaching in the highs while the soft domes in the 10's are described being a tad smoother or toned down (though many report the b's have pretty smooth highs for having metal domes). The woofers in the b's are separated by an internal brace as to reduce their backwaves from interfering with each other (especially in the midrange) for an overall cleaner sound. The staggering of the woofers in the originals may have functioned similar to the b's internal brace. Both iterations are widely regarded as having incredible bass. In some cases desribed as approaching sub like quality that is clean with very little distortion even at high volumes. This may be due to the cabinets being designed to behave like a transmission line bass loading system that increases bass output. I hope that helped.

      not sure, but amp choice even same power made a huge difference, i tried a B&K amp that was equivalent in power, and it sounded like garbage to me, vocals super thin, etc. I dont think its necessarily the power, since u probably arent running that many watts through it, if i remember these are 92db @1watt so that is pretty comfortable listening. obviously goes way higher as you go up but reletively good efficiency.

    Do this speakers have a separate woofer inside the cabinet? Or is the rich bass produced just by the 2 6 1/2 inches speakers?

    • @JesusISdaonlyway
      @JesusISdaonlyway 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! There is no extra woofer inside the cabinet. Just the two 6½" midwoofers on each tower. The cabinets were computer engineered and designed to work like a transmission line bass loading system. Which extends the low frequency output. Allowing these lil woofers to dig surprisingly low. The woofers being at the top of the cabinet and operating in phase with one another is a key factor in this as well. Sharing the power handling, increases the overall performance and output. The location of the drivers in relation to the port at the bottom. The cabinet design, i.e., dampening, bracing and the inner column made to act like a transmission line along with the tuned port that is also in phase with the woofers. These combined features essentially acts as an additional woofer. Not only making for deep rich bass but significantly decreases the woofers' excursion while doing so. Even when played extremely loudly, they are not moving nearly as much as the sound suggests. All factors in how the BP10's can put out serious bass and maintain midrange clarity. Great speaker design! I know you didn't ask for all of that, but just thought I'd share my findings. They are incredible speakers. The bass is clean and deep.

    Yea I recently got a pair for $20 including the powerfield 15 sub.... lol. In comparison to my main speakers (energy 4.1e) the bp10 mids are a bit too recessed for my liking, although bass extends further, the core of the sound seems slightly too scooped out in the mids (very obvious in voices). A factor may be that my room size is smaller than optimal for the big bp10's

    • @AnthraxVX

      ahh gtocha, u may also want to check that ur drivers arent separating, on my bp20s i got the drivers were separating so i removed them, checked resistance to make sure coils were still good (they were) then i re-glued the surrounds since the surrounds were still good, i now have 10s , 20s, and 30s, lol gotta make a comparison video

    • @JesusISdaonlyway
      @JesusISdaonlyway 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AJ Grape $20 dollars!!! 😳. Wow. You did good 👍. Well just for fun perspective...for the price I paid for my pair, I could have bought 10 pair if they were $20. And for $200 I didn't get a sub 😔 but that's alright the speakers are enough for me.🙂 In my setup with these I find the mids to be thick and prominent (could be my room). Also the components used play a big part too. I found this to be true with my BP6B's. For example when I first got them I was running them with a Marantz SR5000 (70WPC) the bass and highs were very pronounced mids almost none details were muted. Then I connected them to an Emotiva stack (Basx PT-100 preamp & A-300 amp). The mids and highs were there, a bit TOO there, with alot more detail but noticeably less bass than the Marantz SR5000. Even with this I thought that I just needed new speakers. But I recently got a Marantz SR8001. I had this receiver before and sold it along with the Polk Monitor 40 and 60's seriesII and that set up sounded phenomenal.. like audible air and space is the best way I can describe the sound...anyway just got another one because I remembered how great it sounded...and just like that what a total difference in bp6b's the frequency band from bass, mids and highs were equally present with clarity and detail to boot. The they still don't sound as airy as the Polk did only somewhat and they have a more realistic and grounded sound. So, with different components I experienced three different sounds from the same speakers. It interesting to say the least but this has made me a believer in finding the best synergy between components. Its a real thing. Which discovery has both simplified and complicated reality lol. But now i have the BP10's set up like this...the Marantz SR8001 as a preamp to the Emotiva Basx A-300 amp and they have detail highs, mids and lows galore.

    Back in the mid-90's I used to go to a live auction fairly often and one day they had a pair of BP-10 speakers, one black and one white with successive serial numbers. I managed to get them for $100 with the intention of selling them. So I took them home, advertised them, had a guy come give them a listen and he said, "I'm going to check out another pair of speakers and I'll let you know tomorrow". So the next day he called and said, "I decided I want to buy your speakers", and I replied, "sorry, they are no longer for sale. I gave them a good listening to myself, compared them to my little Sony speakers (which, up to then I thought sounded pretty good) and decided to keep them". They just sounded incredible. I couldn't believe how sharp the highs and how deep the bass was. Who needs a subwoofer when you have these? Sadly, they've been in storage for over 3 years and I just set them up again but my amp isn't working so I'm going to buy a new one and hope they still sound great. For the record, about 13-14 years ago two of the drivers were sounding bad and I noticed they were separating, so I contacted Definitive and asked how much for replacements and the response was, "no charge for you, send your address and they are on the way". WOW!! Anyway, I hope to enjoy them for years to come. Just hope my hearing can still appreciate the sound as I get older.

Less accurate and impressive than my $100 Audio technica Ath-M40X Dire straits/Brothers in arms/So far away close HH sounded so bad, it was like a low res sample. 5khz spike. (Yes, I have other sets of higher-end headphones too) Headphone cable sockets (5.5mm) came loose, sound intermittent. Verdict: these headphones are overrated, under-performing badly made dog shit. They are not good headphones, sound or quality, even compared to hifiman He4xx (and those are dubious quality) Stick with North American or European made planars The best argument? you lucked out and got the 1 out of 4 quality controlled pair. Are on a whole other level. I didn't expect the difference to be as evident as it is. The BP10's have all that makes the BP6B's great, only multipled and optimized times over. The frequency band is a lot more developed and well rounded in the 10's. BP6B's go very deep for having 5.25" woofers but meet their limits much faster than the 10's another difference worth mentioning is, the BP6B's tweeter may be a tad bit higher reaching (most likely due to it's aluminum tweeter vs the silk dome tweeter the BP10's have. They both sound great..even similar. I've tried running them together (my space ain't big enough for this team). But there is a big difference between the two..that at the end of the day has to be heard, which would be its own best explanation. I hope that helps.

    Nice video. I have a pair also. But someone gave them to me. Because they were just to big. There are nice folks out there.

    I own the same speakers. There great. I have them unhooked because I got a pair of bp 30s. And let me tell you how much better they can get. Better tweeters in the 30s and two more drivers in each speaker doesn't hurt. Worth there weight in gold. I just bought klipsch rp 280fs and they don't compare.

      I believe you about bp30s being better than bp10s. But, To REALLY get full potential w/bp30s - you need a VERY good powerful amp. In my case I would benefit better by just adding a good sub such as SVS sb 2000. Sub + bp10s would outperform bp30s for sure. Currently have Denon 4802r. Rec.,Clr 2002 center, Bp10s, 4 Promonitor 1000s.(very 👍 satellites)ALL Def. Tech

      Speakertweaker 1346 in this case I say the klipsch are better than the bp10s. But look at the price difference. From $400 to $ 1400

      Grant Bettencourt yes they do need and want big power. I have a Adcom GFA 555 ii so it does the job. I run a Yamaha Rx A2070 aventage series. 9.2 klipsch 12 inch subs. I love speakers and amps so much it's a sickness like women buying shoes I guess

    Did you ever test out your Def. Tech bp20's? Wondering how they compare to bp10s? Especially Bass capability vs bp10s. I bought another pair of Def Tech Promonitor 1000s to complete 7.0. Def. Tech setup. Looked into subs --SVS sb2000 or Def Tech supercube 4000. Never felt it was neccesary in 12×13 ft rm

      30s make the bp 10s sound like crap. Hard to say I know but much better tweeter in the 30s

    I bought these speakers in the early 90's before anybody even knew who Def Tech was and when these speakers were still being built in Baltimore Maryland. I have never replaced these speakers. They have been my fronts in various setups from old surround sound to Dolby pro logic days, then to Dolby digital , then Dolby digital ex , DTS, DTS ES, then Dolby True Surround, DTS Master audio 7.1, and even now with Dolby Atmos and DTS X. No matter what format has come out my 25 year old speakers handle the format with authority and have never failed me. When I purchased these speakers the salesman told me that I would never want to upgrade them and he was correct. Funny thing is now years later there are so many people who claim Def Tech speakers are only a step above Bose. These people are very incorrect and have obviously never heard them properly set up . I will keep these till I die.
