    [DO DUAL-SCREEN PHONES MAKE SENSE?]
    “No.” That’s the answer Betteridge’s Law dictates be given in the instance of a headline that asks a question - and I’m gonna say it right out front: it’s also true, for me. Personally speaking, a dual-screen phone does not make sense for most of my needs.
    But my needs are not everyone’s needs. And more to the point: Microsoft is about to hit the dual-screen scene in a big way with its Surface Duo later this season, so like it or not, dual-screen smartphones will soon be a thing (whether they ultimately last is a question for another time). So for the past few months I’ve been using a few LG Dual Screen review devices; I’ve compared notes with other LG users; and I’m now convinced that there are benefits to a twin-display device … as long as you’re willing to put up with some fairly large compromises.
    Join me for a look at the various use cases of dual-screen phones, featuring the LG Velvet and LG V60, and stay tuned for my Microsoft Surface Duo coverage - whenever that device finally makes it to market!

    [ABOUT MRMOBILE'S DUAL SCREEN PHONES VIDEO]
    "Do Dual-Screen Phones Make Sense?" was produced following several weeks with an LG Velvet review sample, and several months with an LG V60 review sample, both provided by LG. The devices were tested on T-Mobile and Verizon in and around Brooklyn, NY. Preproduction samples running prerelease software. The lone sponsor of this video is Surfshark; neither LG nor any other company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage.

      Yeah, no.
      There's a reason Nintendo gave up on the dual-screen device and went all in on the single-screened Switch. No matter what pundits say, current software is neither good enough nor fast enough to make using the auxiliary screen head and shoulders better than what a large single-screened device or floating windows on a Windows/Manjaro device already can't do.

    I've been using my V60 since it was released. I totally agree it is VERY conditional. I love my V60 it's honestly perfect for my needs...well back when traveling and flying were a thing. It offered levels of productivity that I just haven't seen any other device come close too. Having Active Pen support gives it Samsung Galaxy Note-like functionality and I love that. I don't think LG enough credit for what they're doing. Sure foldable phones are nice, but they aren't really practical considering everyone has gotten used to IP rated products. I'm excited for future foldable tech, but I personally prefer the flexibility a dual screen can provide.

      I would continue to buy lg phones if it wasn't for their blatant removal of the bootloader from nearly all of their devices removing rooting and custom rom flashing abilities. So I will instead buy something that CAN do that. Possibly a Oneplus device. I currently own an LG V40 and while I don't hate LG's skinned Android 10 I still wish I could flash it when my phone stops getting updates and overclock it but alas, only the European models can do that.

    I think the dual screen phone concept, at the right price, makes tons of sense for me. I am constantly using the split screen multitasking on my Android phone and my iPad 7th gen, so having a phone that I can use most of the time with just one screen, and then whip out the second screen for multitasking sounds perfect. This is more for something that can fold completely over and remain thin, like a Surface Duo, not the LG dual screen so much.

    I just got my LG G8X with the Dual Screen a little while ago, and I don't think I can go back to a regular phone, for two very small reasons.
    First, having a dual screen is nice when you want to have two things up at the same time. I was able to do similar things with my LG G8 by using the splitscreen mode, but the Dual Screens makes it far more elegant.
    Second, full size keyboard. I can actually type at a decent pace now.

    I love my LG v60 and Velvet, but I would never recommend it to anyone that's not a heavy multi-view user. You have to really, really want the 2nd screen, not consider it an afterthought.
    Particularly what I love most about the Dual Screen, is actually what they had to do to with how multi-tasking is handled on the base phone.
    The rules that govern how multi-view works are much broader. You might have noticed if you're a heavy Multi-window user, not all apps support the feature. They demand all screen or nothing at all, and some games are designed to completely shut out some background processes to prevent cheating. So in some apps/games, picture-in-picture mode cannot work. Android and the app will normally make you decide "you can play this game, or you can watch your video in P-i-p, you can't do both" but because of the nature of how LG manages background processes to extend multi-view for the sake of it's 2nd screen cases, you can have both.
    So basically to make 2nd screen work how they intended it, they further-expand how multi-view works fundamentally, so even if you're using the phone without the case, you're given more options on what apps you can use in multi-view, compared to how most Android phones do it.
    All my excitement and enthusiasm for multi-tasking though doesn't blind me to just how niche of a user I am. The features it allows some to do are for the most part, unwanted by most people.
    Admittedly though I don't take the Dual case with me to work. The case does very little in terms of protection, and the added mass just increases the force if you were to drop it on the ground.

    I want my phone to eventually replace my laptop: which is what I think dual screen would help with.
    I always use the split screen view: a lot of the time when sharing house ideas with my wife.
    It's this kind of multitasking that makes me want a dual screen phone badly these days: the flexibility to quickly jump between two apps by simply looking over to the side.

    • @james8606
      @james8606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue we will have with this is what you want that replacement to be. For example the surface duo is a phone 1st pc 2nd as it is limited to mobile apps. The other device will be the surface neo. This is running full windows X and if (and that's a big If) Microsoft can get the developers on board for apps and also get x32 and x64 apps working well on it this could be your other option. But this is a laptop 1st phone 2nd. That said will be limited apps for mobile use. I fell if we were to have 1 device for eveything the os is where it needs to change. That said if Microsoft can get its act together the neo could be the way forward. Having the neo as your everyday device to take calls edit work ect but then Dock it to give you a full Windows experience. It's all if buts and maybes. Personally for me love the idea Microsoft is giving us but I am waiting until my p40 contract is up before deciding which way to go next.

    • @james8606
      @james8606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @E. O. It depends on the type of work you are doing. If it's blogging emails, documents and low level video editing then yes a phone can replace a laptop. I managed to do this with my note 8 and Dex. If you need big work then of course a pc is better. This new type of device Microsoft is to fill the void between mobile and laptop and to become more productive on a phone.
      It can replace a laptop but it's not designed to replace it

    • @Movie16Master
      @Movie16Master 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know phones today aren't the best replacement for a laptop.
      I'm personally not a lite user. I do a lot of graphic design, CAD, video editing, CGI.
      My hope is with the current trend we will see phones pack enough power to be a better option than a laptop (more portable. Lightweight).
      There will probably always be a place for a desktop: I've turned mine into a kind of server. When I'm away from home and need the extra horsepower I just jump on TeamViewer and knock out some projects that way.

    • @james8606
      @james8606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @E. O.I agree with that but no one on this post put they were going to replace a pc. At the end of the day when laptops came out they said they would replace desktops and then tablets would replace laptops. None of them have replaced each other as they all have plus and minus points.
      But for a home user/business user who wants to just edit small things, look on social media, read and reply to emails and generally be productive devices like this can replace laptops and desktops

    • @Movie16Master
      @Movie16Master 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No case options make it fragile, not to mention how it finds some way fall off of completely flat surfaces. I ended up spending more money on screen protectors than I did on the whole phone because I'd have to replace them all the time as the protector is the highest point on the phone which would cause things to catch under the protector and pull it up all the time. The ONLY form factor I'd love when it comes to foldables is the clamshell design like the Z-flip or the new Razr. More compact to fit in a pocket and less susceptible to screen damage when the design of the screen has been refined.

    I have the LG V60 and while its a great option to have the second screen, I find I prefer it with a regular case due to the clunkiness of the dual screen. That said, I do enjoy having it when I am playing Dungeons & Dragons for the multitasking aspect (calculator/character sheet/reference pdfs), or when I am (as mentioned) either reading ebooks or watching videos on one screen.
    If LG hadn't included it with their V60 as a freebie, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, but I like having it around when I need it.

Even though mine is the first iteration of the LG dual screen I absolutely love it and I can hardly see myself going back to normal phones. This is the phone for me. Exactly what I needed. There's an app/utility you can download that should allow you to make the Kindle app split between 2 screens called "LG WideMode." It isn't officially supported, but it can be useful for apps that don't make use of the dual screens.
    As for the video itself, I like the idea of dual screen phones and thought I'd make decent use of my G8X's functionality. However, I pretty much exclusively find myself keeping it in the large case and setting it up like a tent to watch videos. I almost never make use of the 2 screens because it's so cumbersome to hold (and disables "comfort view" which I quite like). The main thing I thought it could perform well for is mobile livestreaming, and it essentially just doesn't work, but a lot of that comes more down to app support than it does to the dual screen case.
    I do think that dual screen phones are more practical than folding phones, but they still have so long to go before it's worth making the jump from 1 screen.

    6:35 I get around using the LG keyboard with an app called "WideMode for LG". It forces the screen to enter WideMode regardless of the application so when the keyboard is open it takes up the bottom screen and Messages or Gmail is open on the top. It's far from perfect but it's what you agree to deal with this early in the dual/folding screen era.

    Even typing this. I see the flaws but in the case of v60. If i just want a phone, it's cheaper then the s20 plus but just as good. Battery life is practically the best on the market. The os may not be the best but the extra screen just takes the cake for me.

    As a fold owner I think foldables with one large screen totally make sense, however dual screen phones make little to no sense. The issue with phones is not that you are limited to one screen, but that that one screen is too small. The fold solves this by giving you one large screen whereas the dual screens just give you yet another small screen which does not really help.

    You have to say though, a dual screen doesn't cause creases, it doesn't kill the whole display if it gets smashed, just half of it, and a dual screen display can be swapped out more easily.

Also full screen TH-cam while texting friends was the best. I don't miss it too much now using a regular phone but the V60 was a beast for sure especially with pen support which I did use as well.

A month ago I introduced my non TV watching, Sci-fi disliking awesome gf to Deep Space 9... and she loves it! and she's genuinely surprised she would, but I knew she would, not only because of the great writing but the non episodic story-arcs which evolved both the characters and direction DS9 takes, she remembers names, places, past experiences and even notices small things like the uniform change to coloured undershirts and grey shoulders!! we JUST finished Season 5's Episode 10 "Rapture", our 2nd episode today... I 100% back duel screen phones. I was until recently still useing a ZTE axom M in the year of out Lord 2020. That phone could not do anything well but it had 2 screens and I loved it. I watched TH-cam videos on one screen and played afk arena on the other. If I was talking to someone online and I needed to look something up I could do it on the other screen without risking refreshing and loosing what I wrote. Copy pasting is such better on two screens. Now that I'm back on one screen with the Google pixel 3a I can truely say, I miss you duel screen. I miss you a lot.

    One of the biggest thing that kinda triggers me is that I once asked a LG employee why they included a "useless" notch on the second screen and he said it was because of symmetry and customers didn't liked the asymmetry of earlier ones. And now what? Now they use a stupid and pretty heavy curved screen on the main phone and a flat screen on the second one.

  • @sharishth
    @sharishth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Answer: depends on person to person.
    Being a G8x owner: it's a better less expensive multitasking experience than Foldable displays. The price and device usage with it's performance is worth it and I don't have to worry about durability, LG comes with 8 10 G milli spec grade. And it's modular so can enjoy both benefits of single and dual screen. Also two do make a difference on how you use a phone.

    I use an LG G8X dual-screen, but it was my desire for the Duo when they revealed it last that inspired my purchase, and it's what I REALLY wanted. I regard the LG as a fun stepping stone towards something better.

    I own ROG phone and twinview dock (the first one). so technically its a dual screen phone (yeah its also bulky). so I use this dual screen to play 2 different games at the same time or multitasking. Also, it got additional perk which is the twinview dock carriers 6000mah battery and it can act as a powerbank to my phone. but after seeing this LG Velvet, I wish that ASUS ROG copy some of its features like. the keyboard can go on the other screen, run 1 app on both screens, have an option to portrait or landscape an app and most importantly, its not a gaming phone but i got some console layouts. and I wish ASUS ROG will do that on other games.

  • @MichelPostma

    Since we at the moment only really have LG taking a shot at the Dual-Screen (until Microsoft becomes readily available), it holds reasonable potential.
    If a single manufacturer can create a product-line like this which has people interested, a future with competition would refine things like better keyboard integration, removal of proprietary charging ports, etc.
    Then again, we said the same thing about tablets and... Yeah...
    Anyway, cool video. Would love to try out a dual-screen phone myself one day, but these shots make them feel a lot like what I imagined my Nintendo DS of the future would be.

    I don't really like how there is a hinge on the middle, something that ZTE was able to minimize on their Axon M. I've used this device for almost a year and I've gotten used to the extend mode, as well as using the multitask option on there. It's a shame that it was released ahead of it's time but I bet it's the cheapest foldable you can get now.

    I agree that dual screen phones are an intermediate step to a foldable phone future. But until we can get a more scratch resistant screen on those foldable phones, I'll be looking to dual screen phones.
    Personally, I love the concept. Let's just hope that Google, seeing the foldable and dual-screen phones coming, will make Android capable of more natively support this feature. As things are right now, I worry that it might be a bit clunky.
    But I have hope that the Surface Duo that Microsoft is putting a lot of effort towards will be able to ship with a high enough degree of polish to make other phone manufacturers take notice and to create a trend in the industry.
