    Some improvements, use a hub to attach usb ports. The switch for power, sliding it back and forth is going to wear the ports out, so it would be better to switch +5v on the USB line. Modern laptops use an antenna in the screen, not a bad idea by removing the circuit board from the phone and directly mounting it. Also, instead of aluminum, just just pvc. If you want to go all out, put a USBc dock inside.

      3d printers can be extremely handy. There's even simple and free CAD software to use. Like tinkercad and sketchup.
      You can even combine traditional methods and 3d parts to be more efficient and effective.
      Today, I was replacing a custom fan led with traditional bulbs. Needed an 8mm spacer that took less than a half hour to model and print.
      I highly suggest learning the 3 steps, Model, Slice, and Print. Depending how inclined you are, it can take a week to a month to learn everything.

    Well, the best option (at least for those who have a 3D printer) is to make the housing parts with plastic of the filaments/resins instead of using aluminum because it is cheaper and more practical and obviously you have the artistic freedom to customize whatever you want, resulting in a unique and aesthetically beautiful laptop... or maybe not

      To be honest, they already are internet devices for the less fortunate of our world, if they even have internet. Where you do think all those used phones people sell or throw away or recycle go? A lot of the electronics recycling companies make a profit by selling the electronic waste to other countries for a profit. And considering they get electronics for cheaper than new, which they can repair and sell in their country, why would they refuse?
      Unfortunately, it's the internet itself which is lacking or cost-prohibitive in the places which need it the most.

      It depends on how old the phone was because it could be considered a security risk for some of the more security required apps (like banking) due to not being able to update android enough to plug security leaks. I like the fact that phones can be unlocked but they really also need to be able to be rooted remove the crapware from the mfg and would allow other options to keep many of these devices to become ewaste (not everyone recycles or sells off their old devices, they simply throw them away) by allowing enthusiastic people to come together as a community to develop an OS that can run on them. Many of these flagship android phones hardware are much better than some of the basic arm chromebooks, it's a shame that they can't be recycled into a diy laptop or chromebook instead.

    • @SapioiT
      @SapioiT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrWirelesscaller Especially since there could be a kit similar to this one which can be bought ready-made, which one could buy and stick the old phone into, after replacing the operating system with one like LineageOS and Replicant, or after updating to a newer Android version. And depending on the capabilities of the hardware (most important part being the screen, in terms of price), we could get nice smartphone-to-laptop conversion kits, maybe even adding custom cooling for the phone, with the aid of either a thermal pad or lots of thermal paste, or even removing the case and battery from the phone (or replacing the battery with a smaller one, to leave more room for cooling but not shut down if power is cut for a few seconds), and directly cool the other components, especially since there are lots of small and tiny stick-on cooling fins, and funneling the air from a fan into the right places is not difficult nor expensive.

    Why didn't you use a type c port to charge the whole thing,why use a barrel type connector

      barrel connectors are easy to mount on this type of frame, and are less prone to breakage, while mounting a micro or type-C USB port on it will be much more complicated and easy to break.

    You're incredibly creative! I love the DIY mindset; independent spirit not often enslaved by an attitude of entitlement. I predict you will invent something - accidentally- and it will either make you rich, dangerous or both! Keep up the great work!

    Make sure you sand down the primer with p400 or p500 so it gives it a smoother surface and add grip for paint so I can't pick or peel off.
