I tried this project on an old redmi k20/mi 9t and replaced the motherboard with one from mi 9t pro/k20 pro. It works flawlessly, but it has a lot more adaptations that you have to do in order for everything to work. Especially in making the firmware recognize the extra capacity. Your mileage may vary since k20 pro has two variants - 855 (plain) and 855+ (pro premium), the latter being hardware locked up to 692MHz. I really appreciate the incredible effort in producing this video. It is kinda difficult to adapt such a project to other phones but is incredibly doable. The sky is the limit.
@@mantistsai6457 I pretty much applied the video for my cooling system. I milled myself an aluminum heatsink with 1mm spacing between the fins to fit between the phone frame and the camera bump. I used thermal pads to contact it to the ESD shielding of the motherboard, and made a nice cutout on the plastic cover of the motherboard. I also drilled a few holes in thay heatsink so that it can be screwed to the motherboard screws, and bought longer 1.4mm screws to compliment them. I bought a tiny 2A boost converter (the one used in the video is only 600mA and it burnt out on me) to boost my battery voltage up to 9v so my temperature controlled fan controller (zhiyu zf-3L) can ramp up my tiny 5v blower fan to blow useful cooling, from 35°C probed on the heatsink, to full speed at 40°C. This was done so that I can build myself a full case instead of having fully exposed circuitry on the back cover About the battery, having 3 batteries is too much compromise for daily use. Phone is too bulky and heavy, so I stuck with 2 batteries instead. I made sure to give those batteries a solid spot weld for nickel strips of which to solder wires on, so the connection is secure. Then I encountered a fair bit of tinkering with magisk modules to make my phone charge up to 8000mAh.
Hello there. I am also interested in this kind of project, I just upgraded my battery but could you share the magisk module you used in order to change the battery capacity?

@@handlemonium Yeah, the modular design of the Fairphone is just brilliant and the fact that you can buy original spare parts straight from their website is just amazing.
Looking at their page instantly tells me that the Fairphone 3+ is available in my region. And the specs look fine. Dual-sim, microSD slot, decent storage. Next question would be how it is on the software side. How much bloat is on there, how easy is it to root, can the governor be tweaked to ones use profile, etc. And about likes in a video: interacting with it in form of comments already calls onto the algorithm to push the video.
Thermals are always very important, but it's very rarely talked about unless you're a (real) nerd. You can, and I have undervolted my PC GPU, which gives me less "power" but butter performance, because less heat means less throttle means better performance.

The screen refresh rate can't do the same with Samsung S21 ultra either. The S21 screen has a refresh rate of 120hz.. Meaning you can crank games up to 120 Frames Per Second and see all those frames
As a little advice. I had to replace my S20+ battery a few months back and i had the idea of putting some high quality thermal paste (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut) under the CPU into the frane and the cpu temperatures droped by at least 7°C
This idea could definitely be commodified. You could sell thousands of modded phones at hugely discounted prices compared to modern flagships, help gamers maximize their bang for bucks and make decent profit yourselves!
it wouldn't be that easy. companies will not support the idea of others making money from using their product without their permission. chances they might even get sued.

I completely agree. I'd love to see what they can do pushing the latest tech from the newest flagships to the max! Especially with some of these 165hz panels we're getting now!
I've been overclocking old android flagships for a while and most of the time, they works well. Though some backdraws like temp cramping up to 60c and battery draining super quick. Always have the thought of adding inbuilt cooling fan like how you did, but i just didnt have the proper tools. Though it's great seeing someone actually did this.

This makes me so nostalgic for 2013 when most flagships still got exploits for root/bootloader unlocks. It was a magical time. I still remember S-OFF on my HTC DNA and M7, and overclocking them. It was fun. Thanks for bringing me back.
Agreed, it was a nice memory when I was an early adopter of Android phones starting with the grand-daddy HTC G1. At some point, Android became more and more walled that I just moved to iOS for simplicity. People are still saying Android phones are "customizable" but nowadays you can't really do as much as the early days, especially when the companies don't provide the necessary files they used.
@@2timegarza583 Thats why I always import phones from China, I need root, I need xposed framework and magisk to use the phone like real Android. Most of Xiaomi's phone, if not all, are unlockable and rootable. Also OnePlus and RedMagic.

You should try the same with the Dimensity 9000, Snapdragon 8 Gen1 and Exynos 2200 Would be really interesting to see what you can get out of these SoCs
it will be nice to see, but in order to do this the prerequisite is that there must be established software to do the overclocking of the GPU, screen and stop the thermal throttle, if that is not done yet i doubt they can make an overclocked version of that SoC

This is a Technological Marvel on TH-cam history! More power to you! Makes me realise how much we need custom mobile manufacturers to cater every distinct group's needs.. and Big Players making us a fool in the name of chipset
They are not making us fools completely. We need better thermals on a smartphone to get the actual performance of a chipset. You can watch mrwhosetheboss's video to know more.
@@maazshaikh5283 I've already watched the video, and thanks for your reply.. and what I mean by making us fool is, the chip manufacturers dumping us new silicon every year with higher stability and efficiency, and all phone manufacturers shipping us those without addressing the bottleneck.. absolutely we need better thermals and software integration and optimisation..
@@reddyprahlad Dial it down brother, as much as I agree that there is a lot more technically sound content available on TH-cam, I believe this is a very informative video for a layman (therefore a larger audience) by him, not just to show how to overclock the software but also acknowledge the long existing hardware bottle-neck, and to take it up as a backyard-project.. I believe it's a great step in the right direction to inspire a lot of us and other YTubers towards customization.
I think it shows that with proper cooling solution, better management of cpu & gpu frequency, an old flagship can still be usable in today's games. This is absolutely amazing. Imagine what these modifications can do to newer chips these days. Shame most phone manufacturers doesn't provide proper cooling to phones without raising the cost too much.
This thing takes an approach I wish manufacturers of gaming phones would adopt.. I mean yeah its cool that a new ROG gaming phone mostly looks like an avg phone, but id be down with an uncoventional phone that has insane fans and coolers and enough battery power to last longer than my bladder can. I think gaming phone makers are too focused on the phone part and not enough on the gaming. I'm not sure I felt this way yesterday.. But after this video? Things have changed 👌
I guess a handheld android gaming console is nice or better than a dedicated gaming smartphone. They should make it upgradable too just like in PC (enable storage expansion, custom fans, RAM slots, annnnnnnd eGPU for mobile).
While watching I couldn't stop thinking how sick would be this overclocking with todays flagship. This is insane! And just pay attention this is a 2019 phone, what if we do it on a 2023 phone😱
finally , someone put a real cooler for ultimate performance , this video was so unbelievable , everything was explained perfectly , im speechless , just WOW but for the part where u say your snap dragon 855 was faster when overclocked over the snap 8 gen 1 , if u overclock the latest tech parts , gpu , cpu and do everything the same u will get much more performance than the phone that u just modified and overclcoked , but its still ... SO impressive !
Wow, great job man. I have just switched from SD855 to SD888 and I don't feel any performance differences at all. Flagship phones are getting worse and worse during this days...
SD888 and SD865's GPU architecture are same, and the IPC improvement is due to the frequency increase of memory (LPDDR5 5500MHz to LPDDR5 6400MHz). What's more, it seems that TSMC's N7P technology's power efficency is better than Samsung's 5LPE technology
Excellent delivery, high production value, and unique content. This is solid! Keep up the good work. Something tells me that you will be very successful. Best of luck.
Guess why they chose the Snapdragon 855 chip over the more powerful 865 as a digital channel, if they still want to receive the latest Snapdragon phones, they can't do something like this to "humiliate" Snapdragon!
@@arc_hive9028 no it's not. PCs and phones are two very different things, you have A LOT of space to place and cool your parts in PC, whilst in phone everything is cramped together in a small box, most of everyday users don't need this. What a project tho... I'd wanna see extreme clocking tbh for 60fps Genshin impact but still I've never seen someone getting this tech savvy on mobile chips and whatnot... Hats off!

The amount of joy I got watching you create and design this from someone whi doesn't even mobile game is insane. What a badass little build amazing work man!
Now this is a proper gaming phone. Companies like Asus, Xiaomi, Red Magic only throw in an external air cooler that cools very little and call it a gaming phone while they have exactly the same performance as regular flagship phones. I wish they did something like this
It honestly shows how capable flagship hardware is just hindered by form factor housing constraints. These phones easily could outperform Nintendo switch if the software was optimized properly and the hardware room to breath and vent out the heat so performance can be sustained.
Yea it is true but the general public want looks and feels aka aesthetics too and that comes with a cost aka what we witnessed here... I barely see any phone that's super thick anymore or ones with vents like super old Samsung galaxy stuff like the one made here, I mean I'd love something like that just noone else wants it cuz comfort factor and also with the vents come a drawback aka no water resistance or water proofing yk. It has its drawbacks but for me it's worth it, but for the general public? nah and so sales go down and the product will be at loss because people will go find something else that they like better bla bla hence we're here at this point, pretty sad honestly
Think abt this too. A quest 2 headset is basically a phone strapped to ur head plus it runs 120fps with cooling and good performance. My s21 ultra has 12 gigs of ram too. If we just take all the things that makes these phones so powerful and maybe we could get a truly probable and convenient gaming handheld
@@ohnobro2394 well there is the steam deck which is pretty powerful but then again it's not as affordable for most either especially when factoring the price increases for the extra storage variants compared to the base model. technically any smart phone that can run apps like Netflix, Hulu, etc, then it's got the smart part of the smart TV. All that's missing is coax... and... ew. So yeah. If you mean something else, please explain
The content i always think of whenever i see custom build of pc so i imagine why not smartphone really appreciate this content as to see the limits of smartphone hardware
the effort it takes and technical know how is way to advanced even for literate people, what would be a better project is to do a battery and thermal mod to a steam deck! the files for the back cover are downloadable so it should be easier for him to create custom backplate and watch how many people will download that file if he's succesful!
You could find it on Nubia red magic 7 They have built in cooler and an overclock. The performance absolute beast, and the only contender is lenovo legion y90.

Could you share what voltage you used for 840Mhz in the GPU overclock? Or did you not tweak that? Thanks
@@mantistsai6457 I used the highest available voltage...I managed to get to 850MHz
Cool. And can you share your cooling solution? Graphite sheet? Fan?
This was done so that I can build myself a full case instead of having fully exposed circuitry on the back cover
About the battery, having 3 batteries is too much compromise for daily use.
I am also interested in this kind of project, I just upgraded my battery but could you share the magisk module you used in order to change the battery capacity?
its already been 2yrs and algorithm made me watch it again ❤
I'm new to this channel and thought the title was a total click bait but you guys really went all-in and I'm totally blown away by the result. Love this kind of DIY stuff. Two thumbs up!!!
If only we could "like" a video more so it could pop up better than all the other nonsense we don't care for like already overpriced cameras we don't really care to use or folding overpriced tech, etc
If only flagship phones were more repair & modding-friendly like the Fairphone.
@@HappyBeezerStudios I like you, thank u

I guess having good thermals really does make a big difference. 😳
Most smartphone limiting factor has always been heat. You dump electrons into 5nm silicone, so the energy change is electric ---> heat.
Thermals are always very important, but it's very rarely talked about unless you're a (real) nerd. You can, and I have undervolted my PC GPU, which gives me less "power" but butter performance, because less heat means less throttle means better performance.
I also have this idea before when I started to know about Overclocking. The only thing that's hindering me before is that I don't have a 3D printer. Now that I saw the same idea in practice, I'm really excited and was blow away by how amazing it really is!
