You totally got it - A suite in music is a collection of short, individual pieces or movements that are performed in a sequence and are usually connected by themes or tonalities.
You just stumbled into another legend of music. They all came from previous successful bands, and their first public performance was on stage at Woodstock in front of half a million people.
This was the music of my later high school years. How blessed was I to have had the Beatles and the British invasion from the time I was about 10 and then have it all evolved into music like Crosby stills, and Nash! I do count myself as very blessed. Glad to see you enjoying it and you got it 100%. A 'suite' in music is different melodies or ideas strung into one song. I think one of my favorites by them is Southern Cross.
When I saw this song posted I was like smash that start button! He’s gonna LOVE this!! CSN were a great group of top tier musicians. Love your reactions. You got such good energy!! Btw I was in high school when this was out. Part of the soundtrack of my coming of age. We knew then we were living in a musical renaissance. It was the best.
The first guy is Graham Nash. He was with the band the Hollies. His biggest hit was probably "Teach Your Children", a song with this band. The next guy is Stephen Stills. He was in a band called Buffalo Springfield. He wrote and sung this song. He had a pretty big solo hit with Love the One You're With. The last guy is David Crosby. He was in the band the Byrds and co-wrote, maybe their biggest hit. "Eight Miles High". My favorite song by the band is "Just a Song Before I Go".
They were all very accomplished before getting together. The Hollies had a string of big hits in the '60s, as did the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Stills is a phenomenal writer and guitarist; most of the great acoustic and electric guitar work you hear from this group is Stills, with a little Crosby and Young thrown in.
@@stuBdoc Now you got me wanting to name drop a few more songs. "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" by the Hollies. And "Ohio" with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Yeah, we've added Neil Young to the mix. He was in Buffalo Springfield with Stills, used to play with Rick James (yep, "Super Freak" Rick James), and has a long string of recommendations of his own.
David Crosby was with the Byrds, Stephen Stills was with The Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash The Hollies. Stills wrote this song about his ex girlfriend singer song writer Judy Collins who he was trying to get back together with.
Really fun to see someone enjoy for the first time, music I have known and loved for decades. It immortalizes the music by delivering it to a new generation. Thank you and Keep it rockin' Now 🎶🎶🎵🎶🔥💯✌️☮️🕊️ It is about a guy trying to hang on to a girl (Judy Collins) who was leaving him. These are a collection his poems to her, a lá : Suite Judy Blue Eyes 🩵
The studio recording of Stephen Stills string multitracks is unmatched. His tone of his wailing Gibson Flying V sailing over the chorus is stunning. Graham Nash and David Crosby harmonizing as one voice backing Stills soaring vocalizing call & response. This is a masterpiece.
"Echo in the Canyon" is a great documentary about Laurel Canyon, CA where these guys along with great 60's artists (Jackson Browne, The Mamas & The Papas, etc) lived and hung out together. It is hosted by Jakob Dylan (son of Bob Dylan) and he "interviews" several of these guys about the parties, relationships, fights, etc. It came out in 2018. Hope you can sit and watch it sometime. Has a soundtrack too and at the end, Neil Young (also once with these guys; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) plays an epic guitar solo. It makes one kind of sad to see these great musicians in their youth and then in present time. Time flies, so enjoy every minute!
The actual title is "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" which means there are actually 3 songs within the one. This is classic CSN. and probably the greatest harmonies of all time. This is only the tip of the iceberg, and definitely worth a deep dive! Thanks so much for another great reaction and taking me back to my youth! Merry Christmas! ✌💙✌
Merry Christmas to you too. I'm 23 and I have to work but I will be listening to music all day. I gotta have music when I work. Enjoy your holiday and stay safe. ❤❤
This song is just glorious, loved the joy on your face listening to this. These guys each were in other popular bands- then they got together and came up with this. Neil Young - another huge huge talent in his own right also makes some guest appearances. Keep going with these guys, there are a bunch of excellent songs to discover.
Love watching young people react to the music that was popular when I was in high school! Great reaction, keep expanding your horizons! Their first album, "Crosby, Stills, & Nash" is the epitome of Classic Rock. "Marrakesh Express", "You Don't Have to Cry", "Pre-Road Downs", and "Helplessly Hoping" are my favorites along with this one. Neil Young, who was in the Buffalo Springfield with Steven Stills, joined the band later, and as CSN&Y they came up with a second masterpiece album called "Deja Vu", filled with more classic rock songs that pretty much every boomer knows and loves.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Dreezy! I loved your reaction to this song! I always stay until the end, otherwise what is the point of coming in at all! Your smile said all that needed to be said about how you felt for this song!
Band from left to right - Graham Nash, Stephen Stills & David Crosby. The first time they played together was at Woodstock in 1969. After that appearance, their careers took off like a rocket.
I know how you feel. I was right around your age when I discovered CSN. Of course, that was over 40 years ago, but I can still relate. You'll love this rabbit hole.
So glad you discovered this amazing group- on this song, Stephen Stills is the lead vocal- Graham Nash the upper register and David Crosby has and amazing voice also. As you listen to them, you will begin to distinguish their different voices. Mostly if they wrote the song, they are the lead singer. They blew everyone away when they came out. Never tire of their albums and songs. Stills was dubbed “Many Hands” because he’s able To Play so many instruments masterfully.
The guy in the middle is Stephen Stills who wrote this song. He was a great guitarist and played many other instruments too. His most famous song was "For What it's Worth" that he wrote with his first band called Buffalo Springfield a few years earlier than this. These 3 guys could sing and always had great harmonies. When touring, they brought in Neil Young because they needed another guitar player. This album and a follow up album called "Deja Vu" which including Neil Young, were two of the most influential rock albums of it time. This was released in 1969 or 1970, right in the middle of the classic rock era.
Full song title is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". The cover photo left to right ...Graham Nash (High Harmony), Stephen Stills (Lead Vocal/ pretty much all instruments), and David Crosby (mid/low harmonies).
Brilliant stuff. Part of the fabric of my life. Funny story about the album cover. In order, that's Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and David Crosby. They took the picture outside a derelict house, with a ruined couch outside. A few days later they realised they were sitting in the wrong order, so they went back to take another pic, with Crosby, Stills and Nash sitting in the right order. But the house had gone. They'd demolished it!
Wikipedia can fill you in on Crosby, Stills and Nash individually, including their earlier collaborations with other major artists like Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, and more! I had the privilege of seeing them in concert in 1976 and 2013!
The boys accidentally posed opposite of their names for this album cover photo. The guy to the right is David Crosby, the middle is Steven Stills and the left is Graham Nash. So much of their music to explore. So many performers from this era to experience. Welcome aboard the trip.
From this fine album you can now go further back in time - Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, Hollie’s - and then into their future solo offerings. I can recommend it ALL! Stills also wrote Something’s Happening Here/Buffalo Springfield. You will have so much pleasure going down this rabbit hole of music!!! ☮️💜🎶
They were called a " super group". All three were from very successful 60's bands, Crosby, from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield, whose song " For What It's Worth" was a seminal protest song of the 60's, and Nash from the Hollies. There were a few other musicians then, who got together in different iterations with them, with others, like Neil Young, also a very successful musician. They all knew each other, lived in the same area, all stunningly talented. These were the sort of Laurel Canyon people- L.A.(I believe) bands, a whole other bunch of people like the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane were some of the San Francisco musicians who were doing the same thing, doing albums together in different combinations.
You'd probably understand why this sounds like more than one song if you notice the title is "Suite Judy Blue Eyes." It's a suite. The order on the couch is Nash, Stills, and Crosby. I'm so glad you found this. You have great musical sense. You'll have a good time exploring CSN.🤘😎❤
Stephen Stills, Lead vocals and bass!!! album cover, on top Grahm Nash, Stephen Stills, David Crosby (L-R) all wrote, sang and play multi-instruments with Stephen playing the most. lead vocals were handled mostly by the writer (like the Beatles) with all 3 on harmonies freaking awesome. a rabbit hole you will NOT regret, don't EVER overlook their lyrics!!!!! past hx./bands they came from, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies and The Byrds all of which were pretty successful in their own right. don't for Neil Young!!!
Great reaction. You realized halfway through the song - it's not one piece, it's a group of several musical pieces put together. The musical term is a "suite", and the proper name of this piece is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". It was written by Stephen Stills, who was desperately in love at the time with the very beautiful folk singer Judy Collins (she rejected him though). The Spanish section is there because Stephen's dad was US military, and the family moved to several Spanish-speaking areas, including El Salvador. Apparently it's not very good Spanish, but that's OK because it's just song lyrics...
Also need to check out Crosby, Stills , Nash and Young (neil young who played in Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills) songs: Ohio, Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Helplessly Hoping..so many good songs
Judy Collins, for whom the song was written, said that the naming of days when he could come see her in the 2nd section were based on when her therapist appointments were. Apparently it was not a healthy relationship, and when Stills presented this song to her, she said it was a great song, but they're still not getting back together.
Nobody does 3 part harmony like CSN. Graham Nash is the one on the left in the jean jacket. I believe he sang the highest parts. He was originally in The Hollies. Stephen Stills is in the middle. He was previously in Buffalo Springfield, and David Crosby is on the right with the mustache. He was originally in The Byrds. My favorite songs by them are probably Woodstock, Love The One You're With, and Southern Cross, but they have a LOT of good songs.
Correct the song is about a breakup between Steven Stills and Judy Collins (another famous 60s folk singer - good singer and did a good cover of the BEST female folk singer Sandy Denny's Song "Who Knows where the Time goes" - Sandy Denny never made it "big" over here in America in the 60's, though did so somewhat over in her country England - Sandy and the rock band "Love" are the best examples of top 10's of all time, who were distantly known of in their time - and are today utterly forgotten today. BTW the phot shows in order the reverse of the printed names - the photo shows Graham Nash (who was hitched with Jonny Mitchel at the time - and his song on their Album "So Far" called "Our House" is about him and his girlfriend Jonny.............BTW Neil Young was with them most of the time, and is with them in the above album mentioned, so most of us just calle them CSN&Y, those sometimes they were just CSN. If you like CSN&Y, recommend you check out another band of a near similar time - 5 years later - with the same sound and as good (IMO) - "America", unlike "Love" who are also incredible but never made it big, "America" made if HUGE - on the radio with top 10 hits (at least 10 hit singles) every 5 minutes. Listened to them and Supertramp hits as a 9 yr old kid in the mid 70's. PS I never heard of "Love" nor "Sandy Denny" (who was the lead singer in 3 rock groups in the 60s/70s - Strubs/Fairport Convertion/Fatheringay.................they never were played on the radio in the 70's - only learned of them via the internet and "Napster/Scour" file sharing progams of the 2000's - discover much music never know before from those "pirate" music programs........and now of course i use TH-cam to discover new or old music i never knew of before (like the fab Australian Rock Band "Psychedelic Porn Crumpets" - only a month ago - bought 4 of their CDs last week). peace!
So glad you are enjoying these songs Its really a great experience If u get a chance check out The Doobie brothers too: Black water and long train running are 2 good ones Youre really going to start enjoying all the instruments in some of the older artists not onlt guitars and drums but harmonicas , flutes, banjos stuff you rarely hear today Loving the reactions
Oh now you've done it. This is some great stuff here. Most of the lead guitar work on this album, as far as I know, is Stephen Stills. I have loved him since "Love the One You're With", some of his early solo work. He's up there with the best of the guitarists. Of course, their voices together are magic. That is also Stephen doing the main vocals at the end, with Crosby and Nash backing. After listening a bit, you will be able to pick up which one is singing. Stephen has a great falsetto and a slight southern accent. Graham has an English accent, to me he is the easiest to pick out. David has a warm, clear, beautiful voice. On the album cover, Stephen Stills is middle, David Crosby is right, Graham Nash is left. They mentioned in an interview that the album cover names are not in the same order as they are sitting. A mistake that got through. The next album, "DeJaVu", has the addition of Neil Young, which adds some crunchy edge to Stephen's bluesy guitar. Stephen Stills and Neil Young were in the band Buffalo Springfield before C, S & N (and sometimes Y) was formed. Buffalo Springfield had some notable hits in the late 60's. One classic is, "For What it's Worth". The first two albums (C, S & N and DeJaVu) are must haves in any record collection.
more songs..carry on, woodstock written by joni mitchel ,wooden ships, helplessly hoping, just to get you going so much more..and yes enormous talent and such a pleasure to listen to them..peace and Merry Christmas
The lead vocal is Stephen Stills. Do yourself a favor and check out his "Nothing To Do But Today" record. Saw Graham Nash in Newport News, VA a few years ago. He was like a talking Rock-N-Roll museum explaining everything about each and every song, including personal histories. The most performer-to-audience interactive concert I have ever attended...... and at 67 years of age I have been to a few shows! Great reaction. This hole is very deep, jump on in.
We had nothing but the best music. I doubt I was the only one harmonizing along. I don't have a particular favorite of theirs. The song Wooden Ships might be a little appropriate for today's atmosphere. It features some of Stephen Stills best 12 string guitar playing. It was one of their big songs that Woodstock. And they performed it there with Jefferson Starship. David. Crosby and Graham Nash sang with David Gilmour on his album On A Island tour I suggest you listen to some Hollies or Buffalo Springfield also. 🤠🐂
Two other great suits in rock: The Beatles Abby Road Suite (pretty much all of side 2) and Lou Reed's Street Hassle Suite. Both are masterpieces of different sorts.
I would very highly recommend "Carry On", from their 2nd album, including Neil Young, called Deja Vu. Any song on either that album or this first self-titled album is going to be great.
One of my all time favorite bands Ya gotta check out cinnamon girl, Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young live version Down by the river Southern Man Too name a few Merry Christmas to you and yours Go Chief's
Graham Nash is left, Stephen Stills is in the middle & David Crosby is on the right & Later Neil Young would join them & they became Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. They played at Woodstock & wrote a song about it called Woodstock if you're serious about a live performance.
C S N and sometimes Y . Neil Young played on some of these songs like " Wooden Ships " they are legions the harmonies on their songs are unmatched. Many to choose from as the others will tell you .✌️❤️
This song actually is about a break-up - between Stephen Stills and singer/songwriter Judy Collins. I'd like to also add my vote to the CSN song Just A Song Before I Go.
I’ve been listening to you for a while and I haven’t heard a single dud. Nor any mumbo jumbo from you. Keep it up! Btw there was a fourth member for a while by the name of Neil Young. A fabulous composer and singer so please look at CSN&Y as a group and in fact all of them as solo performers. You’ll be busy… Season’s Greetings from the UK.
PS Graham Nash is sitting highest on the couch Stephen Stills is the guy in the middle and David Crosby is the bushy haired mustache guy 😂 Stills wrote this song he's a musical genius
looking at the album cover, Graham Nash on left, Stephen Stills in middle, David Crosby on right. Stills wrote this song about breaking up with Judy Collins. Nash is the high vice, Stills most of the vocals here, & Crosby's voice is perfect in all areas.
This is why oldies like me hate today's "music." It was so organic back then with amazingly talented musicians who could write by themselves and didn't need lots of studio product tricks to sound brilliant. One of the best "long songs" in rock history, this. That guitar before "Chestnut brown canaries" is so magnificent. And the little guitar bit just before the a cappella ending.
Be sure to hit that ‘Subscribe’ button and let me know whats next! THESE 3 are AMAZING!
Pretty cool, eh. We used to all sing this around the poker table. Saw them twice
One of my favorites is "Carry On", but there are so many great ones, some including Neil Young (CSNY, or Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young).

Their harmonies are absolutely amazing.
Definitely inspired the Grateful Dead to give it a shot in 1970

Yes, they were heavily Laurel Canyon but recorded early in SF. Collaborated with the Jefferson Airplane/Starship and Grateful Dead.

You're a great kid. Fa la la...❤😂
Truely an exceptional song. One of many by CSN. Deja Vu, Carry On, Fair Game and Just a song before I go, are just a few more.

Helplessly Hoping is another excellent choice by CS&N.

PS I never heard of "Love" nor "Sandy Denny" (who was the lead singer in 3 rock groups in the 60s/70s - Strubs/Fairport Convertion/Fatheringay.................they never were played on the radio in the 70's - only learned of them via the internet and "Napster/Scour" file sharing progams of the 2000's - discover much music never know before from those "pirate" music programs........and now of course i use TH-cam to discover new or old music i never knew of before (like the fab Australian Rock Band "Psychedelic Porn Crumpets" - only a month ago - bought 4 of their CDs last week).
peace!
So glad you are enjoying these songs
Its really a great experience
If u get a chance check out The Doobie brothers too: Black water and long train running are 2 good ones
Youre really going to start enjoying all the instruments in some of the older artists not onlt guitars and drums but harmonicas , flutes, banjos stuff you rarely hear today
Loving the reactions
Check out the Woodstock version
more songs..carry on, woodstock written by joni mitchel ,wooden ships, helplessly hoping, just to get you going so much more..and yes enormous talent and such a pleasure to listen to them..peace and Merry Christmas
The song
Wooden Ships
might be a little appropriate for today's atmosphere.
It features some of Stephen Stills best 12 string guitar playing.
It was one of their big songs that Woodstock. And they performed it there with Jefferson Starship.
David. Crosby and Graham Nash sang with David Gilmour on his album
On A Island tour
I suggest you listen to some Hollies or Buffalo Springfield also.
🤠🐂
From my right Longer hair moustache} Crosby, Stills and Nash.. fabulous,,, wish you could have been there sweetheart the 60:s..
Late David Gilmour live has Crosby and Nash on stage.
Two other great suits in rock: The Beatles Abby Road Suite (pretty much all of side 2) and Lou Reed's Street Hassle Suite. Both are masterpieces of different sorts.
Love your reaction. Might check out the song Southern Cross
Try CSNY: "Almost cut my hair" -- David Crosby singing lead. You'll love it.
I would very highly recommend "Carry On", from their 2nd album, including Neil Young, called Deja Vu. Any song on either that album or this first self-titled album is going to be great.
🌸 sorry last comment... towards the end of the song when it starts going in Spanish... that spanish-speaking voice is Stephen stills.
One of my all time favorite
bands
Ya gotta check out
cinnamon girl, Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young live version
Down by the river
Southern Man
Too name a few
Merry Christmas to you and yours
Go Chief's
Neil Young joined this band after this making one of the great Super groups.
Graham Nash is left, Stephen Stills is in the middle & David Crosby is on the right & Later Neil Young would join them & they became Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. They played at Woodstock & wrote a song about it called Woodstock if you're serious about a live performance.
Also check out CSNY. Carry on❤
Almost cut my hair❤
Wooden ships❤
Ohio❤❤❤
Woodstock❤❤❤
The list can go on and on.
PS Graham Nash is sitting highest on the couch Stephen Stills is the guy in the middle and David Crosby is the bushy haired mustache guy 😂 Stills wrote this song he's a musical genius
i love CSN and Young. We're waiting for you to discover Neil Young's 1970's catalog ;
Don't forget... And Young from time to time. Crosby Stills Nash and Young as in Neil Young
looking at the album cover, Graham Nash on left, Stephen Stills in middle, David Crosby on right. Stills wrote this song about breaking up with Judy Collins. Nash is the high vice, Stills most of the vocals here, & Crosby's voice is perfect in all areas.
For a complete switch, listen to "Carry On"
Crosby, Still and Nash, from the right to the left in the picture. Nash is highest up.
Makes me wonder which one was playing the guitar in the left speaker
This is why oldies like me hate today's "music." It was so organic back then with amazingly talented musicians who could write by themselves and didn't need lots of studio product tricks to sound brilliant. One of the best "long songs" in rock history, this. That guitar before "Chestnut brown canaries" is so magnificent. And the little guitar bit just before the a cappella ending.
