I'd say they invented new genres, as well. Helter Skelter lays down what would later be called Heavy Metal, and with both Blue Jay Way and Flying, they anticipate the work of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp by a decade.
Helper Skelter is a common fair "ride" in England. The ride has a Wikipedia page, with a good picture. It really is just a climb up a tower and a slide down, as described in the song.
Helter Skelter is regarded by many as the birth of the Heavy Metal genre. I was 11 years old when this came out and I had never heard anything like it.
This is all Paul. The Who inspired him by saying they just recorded the heaviest song ever. Paul went in the studio and told the guys,......We cannot let them be the dirtiest, we have to do something harder and louder than anyone. Helter Skelter came out.
I got this story wrong on your Beatles post yesterday, but someone corrected me. Paul McCartney read that Pete Townshend of The Who said that they had just recorded The Who's rawest, dirtiest, and loudest song, and Paul McCartney basically said, Hold my beer, and wrote Helter Skelter.
I'm so glad I recommended this .the smile on your face was worth it alone. Ringo yelled I have blisters on my fingers 😂 Considered the first taste of heavy metal. For something completely different Let it be or Hey Jude . Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
"Helter Skelter" may be an early proto-metal song, but other songs that could be considered the same were released before this song. Examples would be "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly and "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer, both released months before "Helter Skelter".
Helter skelter means any big mess, like a train wreckage or tornado damage or wild emotions. Can be used figuratively as well. This song, as mentioned by others, was inspired by a carnival slide of the same name. Charles Manson thought that this song was sending him secret messages. His biography and story of his trial, by the prosecuting attorney, was called Helter Skelter.
Yes, it's also an amusement park ride in the U.K., NOT in London, I don't think there is one in the city of London, they are usually in amusement parks. It's a giant slide that wraps around a cone shaped structure similar to a lighthouse shape but broader on the bottom. People climb to the top, get on the slide and they slide down going around the cone, till they get to the bottom. If you go on the internet and type in "photos of the "Helter Skelter" amusement park ride in the United Kingdom" it should bring up several photos of what it looks light. Paul is basically describing the ride in the lyrics.
This song shows the strong influence of Jimi Hendrix, whose playing Paul greatly admired. That "dive bombing" sound by the guitars is pure Hendrix. Most of the songs on the album are pastiches or parodies of the styles of contemporary artists that The Beatles liked.
I recently lost power. I had The White Album downloaded. So, I listened to the entire album. It was quite a ride. And long. I've never been so happy to lose power! 😆❤️❤️✌️
The Beatles ended in 1970. This song was years earlier. Very ahead of its time. The parents of those people in their teens and 20's did NOT like them listening to this type of music. It's almost as if they thought it was evil or something. But, they kept listening. And then from then on.

The 2 or 3 big bands for changing things up in music, are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Who. They are all known for doing many different styles of music, and changeup in the songs.

@Cbcw76 no you are wrong paul overheard Pete Townsend bragging about just writing a heavy loud song so paul wrote this . And yes the music critics did call it the first heavy metal song
@@allannancarrow8034 That's right - Paul was BRAGGING ON HIMSELF. I'd point to the Kinks with their torn amps as earlier examples. Or even the Beatles HOLD ME TIGHT with distorted bass. But Les Paul has records from the early '50s as the true blueprint for 'heavy metal'. But it takes someone with education and brains - that ain't YOU, obviously;. Go ahead, base yer life on what CRITICS say YEARS after the fact.
Yep they influenced a lot of artists. This is their influence on Metal/heavy metal. Beatles could write and perform just about any genre. Many people don't realize how wide spread their influence was on music and culture in general. Glad you listened to the entire track. Most reactors don't listen to John yelling about the blister on his fingers
For every Beatles album before Abbey Road, the mono versions are the "official" versions, meaning that those are the mixes approved by The Beatles and producer George Martin. Stereo was still considered a gimmick at the time, so the stereo versions were left to secondary engineers, who used gimmicky hard panning techniques.
For purposes of a first-time reaction, the question of remaster vs. "original" doesn't really matter. The Beatles' catalog has been "remastered" several times as technology has evolved, but the content is almost always exactly the same. (There are *extremely* minor variations that specialists will note on some of the recent reissues, but nothing that would change your overall reaction to the song.) Just sit back and enjoy the music.
Paul McCartney is the man of a 1000 voices. Check out, "maybe I'm amazed" & "oh,, darling" And a very early one called "ooh, my soul" .... everyone who's new to The Beatles gets the voices confused at first. But after you listen to those three, Paul's voice will be burned into your head forever, And he also sang "here there and everywhere" "for no one" And "Hey Jude" so he can belt it out and he can sing as sweet as honey. He's insanely talented
Some of this I might be wrong But when they started experimenting they did sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band album. The story goes John had said that he wrote songs for the young and Paul wrote songs for your grandmother.. so Paul wrote this … beginning of heavy metal … Paul is singing
The official story as told by Paul is The Who's Pete Townsend said in an interview that they had made the hardest song (I can see for Miles). Paul heard this as a gauntlet thrown and wrote this in response.
I always thought that was RIDICULOUS, because we were either pre-teens, teenagers or in our early 20s when the Beatles were an active group, we certainly WEREN'T "grandmothers" then ( a lot of us are NOW) and we LOVED those songs that John that Paul wrote for our grandmothers. Most adults didn't care for the Beatles, they thought the Beatles were going to corrupt us!
If you don’t like the hard panning you would like the post-2017 mixes. Those old mixes (2009 remasters) don’t sound great to “modern” ears. Btw anytime you see the 2009 remaster label on a Beatles song that is the original mix from the 60s. Mix and remaster are two different things.

That's funny I didn't realize that either 🤣 Great second reaction 😅
I hate fake reactions 👎🏻
this is Paul and this is why they are the Beatles...they did EVERYTHING in 8 years.
The Beatles have so many styles and sounds. They were super innovative.
A Helter Skelter is one of those big spiral amusement park slides.
This never gets old. 😁
It's Ringo who had blisters on his fingers.
From what I recall they did like 60 takes and Ringo just shouted out, "I got blisters on my fingers"
@@alfredlandesman5165 The rest of the band had been pushing Ringo the whole session to play harder
Nope. It was John.

The Beatles were the ones who constantly said "listen to THIS!" And we did and many bands followed!

The Beatles level of talent was supernatural. It will never be seen again.
Masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow never knows is a psychedelic masterpiece
I always check out any young people reacting to Helter Slelter, they are always shocked, This is the Beatles? Yes they do all styles.
All of the Beatles music was ahead of it's time.
This is the first metal song

John lamented about the blisters on his fingers. Paul, John, & George were in the soft choral background.

Just when you think you got the Beatles figured out.....🤣🤣🤣 I think this song caught us all by surprise back in the day.
I kind of learned that, when it came to The Beatles, expect the unexpected, so I was a little surprised, but not that much.
This is Paul McCartney singing. Ringo has “blisters on his fingers!”
I think it’s John who said that; from playing the guitar.

Do Hey Bulldog, another classic
Supposedly the first ever heavy metal song
"Helter Skelter" is found on the Beatles 1968 album "The White Album"
Another great song Paul sings is Oh Darling I think you'd like it.
My favorite Beatles song. Another song showcasing his insane vocal ability....Monkberry Moon Delight off his Ram album.

A pre-cursor to heavy metal.
First heavy rock song Paul McCartney, 60s
It’s a carnival ride-
Helter Skelter.
The story is that Paul learned that the Who had produced a super-loud, dirty song. Paul didn't want to be outdone!
This recording was about a 25-minute jam, hence the fade out and fade in to the ending. Helter Skelter was a big slide somewhere in England.
They were all over England, on the coast.
No one else was playing a song like this at that time; or singing like Paul is!

Helter Skelter is a fairground ride -- really, just a spiral slide descending from a tower.
Tomorrow Never Knows is another tune you won't believe is the Beatles.
At the time 1968 Paul McCartney was having are friendly rivalry with guitarist Pete Townsend of The Who to make the raunchiest song.
Helter Skelter was a giant slide in London, hence the first verse. Paul then used it as a metaphor for other feelings like sex and/or getting high.

3 other rockers - by John; Everybody's Got Something to Hide, I Want You (She's so Heavy), Hey Bulldog
I saw the Harlem Globetrotters in the late 80's at the old Boston Garden. They opened for the Celtics who had Bird, McHale, and Parrish still.
