1970's Yes were just so good! Even better was they could do it all live as well Great to see your reaction to this old classic. Hope you're feeling much better ♥
When the bass (Squire), drums (Bruford), keys (Wakeman) and guitar (Howe) drop that monster beat @6:57, the proceeding minute and a half might just be the best jam ever laid down on vinyl. Here are four elite musicians in their prime, absolutely blowin' it up with reckless abandon, yet still tight as can be....amazing!
YES is the ultimate group of highly skilled musicians! Incredible live too! Their catalog is vast, spanning over 50 years. Based on your comments you’re likely to love music from the Progressive Rock genre. Complex arrangements of sounds, tempos and themes changing throughout a song. Yes are one of the foundations of the genre along with Genesis, King Crimson, Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer to name a few. For a real mind blowing experience give Jon Anderson (Yes’s lead singer and co-founder) and The Band Geeks recent album a listen. Jon turned 80 a few months ago and he still sounds incredible!
Yes turned my life around in a very real, profound, way. As a teen I was in a dark place… not doing anything wrong, mind you, but very depressed and not hopeful at all about the future. I dare not think of where I might have ended up. Then I bought the Close To The Edge LP, without knowing anything about it. I had listened to early Rush at this point, like Caress Of Steel and recognized the similar song structures. So it was prog-rock, perhaps a concept album… that was my guess, and I literally bought it on that alone. It turned out to be a revelation. I didn’t know that music like that existed… still had the rock elements but it was beautiful, majestic, hopeful. Listening to the title track was an emergent religious experience! It was, along with subsequent Yes albums I bought, a light that slowly dispelled the darkness that plagued my outlook on life. I’ve never fallen back into that gloom either.
They changed my life in a very positive way. I never listened to music the same way again.I thought they were the best band I'd ever heard and I still believe it to this very day. Now, Jon and the Band Geeks have picked up where Yes seems to have left off. Have seen them twice now and they effectively are YES. I have their new CD True it is excellent and they are releasing a DVD in march of the show I saw them do In St Charles Illinois last year. They have already released And You and I (my favorite) on TH-cam about 10 day ago.You will love it. You used the word majestic. And you and I is possibly the most majestic song I have ever heard. Jon and the geeks are doing pretty amazing things. You will love it! Here it is th-cam.com/video/nTGt2rr0o74/w-d-xo.html
And by the way - you are absolutely correct in saying that there isn't another band that sounds like Yes. They were/are in a genre among themselves. They were more than just another prog band. They made prog accessible with their wonderful melodies and harmonies. Their transitions were extremely well crafted unlike most other prog bands that basically just patched different sections together. They incorporated classical, jazz and even country elements in unique ways which helped create their beautifully complex textures. And again as you mentioned, their songs seem shorter than they actually are, they just go flying by carrying the listener on some amazing journey. Few can do that.
As far as musical performance and writing excellence, there are few bands that can rival Yes. Wakeman, Howe, Squire, Bruford, Anderson are all masters of their craft. Pure genius.
YES!! I'm here for this!! The early 70's Rickenbacker tone hard to beat. Early RUSH , KANSAS and FOREIGNER used it and Me! So you play? Sorry to hear you do dialysis. HEART OF THE SUNRISE has Awesome in your face BASS and also on this album along with SOUTH SIDE OF THE SKY and WE HAVE HEAVEN!! First time visiting. Great Reaction and hope you feel better! Going to scan your channel and see what else you got. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁⛄☃️❄️✨🎸☯️☮️
I was obsessed with the bass the first time I heard this song too. It's why I love Yes & Rush so much. 2 of _THE_ best bass players in rock. Chris Squire & Geddy Lee. Btw, if you had a migraine, I don't know _HOW_ you did this. I used to get migraines and it hurt to _BREATHE_ much less listen to anything loud. You have my respect, for sure.
So many Yes songs deserve your attention. I’ve been on a Siberian Khatru kick for about 20 years. I’ve loved it for about 45 years but for the last 20 it’s been my go to, shake my head, laugh out loud at the superb playing and gorgeous vocals and just overall awesomeness of this jam session of a banger.
Thanks for the bass love. I've been playing since '78. I've been on dialysis for 18 months. I couldn't handle the fatigue that came with hemo so I swapped to p.d. I got a good chunk of my life back. Wishing you the best!!
How cool! Love the bass!! I hope PD is much better for you! 🩷 Hemo is really rough I agree, I've been on it for 7 years. They had placed a catheter for PD for me, but it didn't work out, so I never got to start. Stay well friend!
@TwiggyKeely Sorry it didn't work for you. I had to have two extra surgeries to get it adjusted because it kept clogging up. But the surgeries were a breeze. Everything's fine now.✌️
Check out Rush. Yes was one of their main influences. They make massive sound with just 3 guys. Since you like bass there's a real decent chance you'll dig them. The bass player for Yes, Chris Squire, died before they got inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. At Chris' widow's request, the bass player for Rush, Geddy Lee, handled bass duties. They played Roundabout. It's on TH-cam.
So glad to see you liking these incredible guys. They were pure magic between 1970 and 76. You should now start on a chronological journey starting with The Yes Album. You will get to see the progression of how the band developed their amazing sound. On The Yes Album are gems like Yours is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper, I've Seen All Good People and Perpetual Change. Then move to the next album -- it only gets better.
Just "Close your eyes and listen." As most of us Yes fans well know, Yes music requires the listener to immerse themselves, within the privacy of one's own head, and with repeated listenings; therefore to allow the music to carry you on a journey within one's own soul. With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)
Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis. The three pillars of 70s and early 80s progressive rock. What an amazing time to be alive from the point of view of listening to music.
There was band touring in the late 70's named Star castle, when I saw them, they were opening for Boston, thought they blew Boston off the stage, they were just great, they sounded a lot like Yes. If you are interested listen to Starcastle- "Lady Of The Lake".
Coffee is supposed to help migranes. There are dozens og good YES songs. "Awaken", "The Gates of Delirium", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", "Turn of the Century", "Starship Trooper", "Perpetual Change", "The Revealing Science of God", lots more.
Saw Yes live at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in 1973. I was allowed to park my motorcycle right by the front door and bought my ticket for $8.00. Got in line and someone passed me a fat doobie to take a few hits, needless to say, I had a GREAT time!!! Also, another band heavily influenced by YES is Rush, which you should definitely check out.
Hi, give a try some day to the band "Gentle Giant", it will blow your mind. There is a "Fan video" of the song "Proclamation" (actually the band helped edit it together during the COVID lockdown days), that can be a nice intro to the band's music.
For more prog rock from way back check out Emerson, Lake, and Palmer: "From The Beginning", "Lucky Man", or "Karn Evil 9" (live at cal jam 1974). From a prog rock elements classic rock band Styx is Tommy Shaw's song he wrote after watching Kansas perform from the audience after Styx's set, "Man In The Wilderness".
Well Keely, if you love bass, you have come to the right place! Chris Squire (bass+) and Jon Anderson (vocals+) started the band in 1968. Chris has been the feature of the band ever since. Steve Howe (guitar+) is master at using "harmonics" by the way. But check your ADD, some of YESs' best epic masterpieces are 18-22 minutes long. But you will hardly notice. May I suggest the CLOSE to the Edge album? 3 songs..."Close to the Edge", "And You and I" and Siberian Khatru". Best album ever created!
I get migraines, too, but not from dialysis. I'm really sorry you need that, but you sure have kept your spirit, I prescribe more Yes, with a generous side of Jon Anderson. Hope your holiday is a good one!
Yes... the Bass! The first time I saw them, for just a second I was a little disappointed that the bass player was using a pick. Then I saw him play his bass like a LEAD instrument and remembered that I don't know a goddamn thing about playing bass. ;-]
There're 2 kinds of music. (Okay, that's a lie but bear with me.) There is casual music, which can play in the background at a party, or makes you want to dance. Then there is "listening" music, which is what Yes makes.
Yes have such a huge body of work and have had so many line up changes and spin offs bands. It would be impossible to make recommendations for favourite tracks. I mean even if you look at the latest version under Steve Howe they are still up there. However, if push came to shove I would have to go to the very first yes song I heard back in 1974 the Gates of Delirium. Sadly your ADHD may not survive 20 mins.
Hey, hope things get better. This would be good shit to listen to when unwell. If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, Try Jon and Vengelis Friends of Mr Cairo. Same guy. You want a version with subtitles, there are no repeats. Goes on about 20's and 30's gangster flicks.
Another band you should check out is Gacharic Spin with the song "Mindset". Dont want to give away too much I think you will enjoy it if you enjoy Yes.
Keely, I'm sorry to hear that you're having migraines from the dialysis. Was looking for a way to buy you a coffee or something to help cheer you up even if just a bit. I have an idea for a reaction, I think you'd really enjoy some girl power with this classic one from the band Heart, a live performance of their hit Crazy on You, with an extended acoustic intro by sister Nancy Wilson, leading into a kickass performance by the band and by their lead vocalist, sister Ann Wilson. Lots of others have posted so you should be able to get away with the rights thing. The video quality isn't the best but the audio is killer. th-cam.com/video/wRKNXhG86VU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=om1MNLSRPOsGmmAN Thanks, and enjoy!

Saw them in concert at Madison Square Garden in 1978. They are Progressive Rock Masters. Great reaction.

I’ve been to 23 Yes concerts over the years. Best band ever
36 for me, 75 to 2014
Good grief! I’m happy to have seen them 3 times (once was ABWH but, c’mon… that’s Yes). The Masterworks show was my dream concert.
😂
Yes is amazing, do And You and I next and chill and feel better. Happy Holidays! 🎄
You're just getting started. Dozens more masterpieces of theirs to hear. YES, the greatest band there ever was or will ever be!🤩

Great Band, Loved them since the early 70's when music kicked ass!
arguably the most talented band of their generation...
Keely this band live will make your migraines disappear

For me when I first heard this in 1971 is the ending. It is also my favorite part of the song.
People that like Yes, love Yes!
Best band, ever. Period.
Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis. The three pillars of 70s and early 80s progressive rock. What an amazing time to be alive from the point of view of listening to music.
Those are my three too. They take turns in being at the top but it's always one of those.
Forgot Rush
And you and I YES then the rest of their stuff you won't ever be disappointed.
Great reaction to one of my favorite bands. Hope you feel better.
PART II 😁 "Feed Your Head"!! That's what the doorman said!? So sang Grace Slick. ☯️☮️

I just bought the 80gm. FRAGILE album about 2 months ago. Nice remaster.
I have a pair of sticks signed by Bill Bruford. I came to Yes in a somewhat 'roundabout' way, starting with King Crimson.
It must take a steady hand to sign a drumstick.
Especially after nearly three grueling hours breaking dozens of its brethren.
Saw them 7 times. Amazing live. Try "And You & I" or "Starsip Trooper". Hope you feel better.

Try Chris Squire's solo album, "Fish Out of Water" for some of his tastiest basslines.

It's not like I'm a musician or anything haha that's what we do WHILE we listen! :)
