There have been a few artists on The Ed Sullivan Show that have protested in different ways including purposefully lagging their lip syncing to make it obvious what is happening. I remember seeing someone, can't remember who it was, but they had detached the microphone cord at a time when there weren't cordless microphones, and others holding the microphone by their side while they sing. All artists with great integrity.
@@decolonizeEverywhere I don’t know if it was on Ed Sullivan or not but Three Dog Night did something similar during a performance. I think it was “Eli’s Coming”.
@terri2494 a lot of big television Executives were always afraid of some of these bands improvising and causing a political stir on their live programs that they could never take back so they insisted often that they lip-sync which didn't go over well with a lot of these musicians who is music is based in social protest in the first place.
The Doors were supposed to sing, "girl we couldn't get much better" during Light My Fire on Sullivan. Jim sang "higher" anyway and they got banned. The Rolling Stones changed Let's Spend the Night Together to "let's spend some time together" to appease the Ed Sullivan producers. Mick rolled his eyes while singing it.
As others have commented, they were mad, because they wanted to sing live. But, they made them lip-sync, so this was their form of protesting...LOL!! BTW, this song is amazing and their harmonies are incredible!
Michelle Phillips did the banana stunt in protest. The show insisted they lip sync. Eating the banana exposed that they were lip syncing. Michelle Phillips later became a pretty successful actress.
This is why I watch these reaction videos. Heard this song thousand times . Seen another performance on video, but never the Michelle Philips singing w/ banana.
Haha! They usually were fried! Michelle Phillips said that they took acid for most of their performances. I remember being 11 and watching this on TV. We never missed Sullivan! Being a California girl myself, I always loved this song
Thanks for your reaction! The 'Ed Sullivan Show' was often an important gig and appearance to make during that time period for rock bands and solo singers starting their careers. Ed Sullivan was demanding of them often having them lip-sync their first time on his live shows to make sure they did not screw up (certain singers and bands were well known for drug use and this band was one of them). Ed Sullivan also had them change lyrics that he deemed inappropriate ( sex, drug or political references) and if they did not comply they were never allowed on the show again. Artist such as Elvis Presley were filmed from the waist up only if he thought they danced or moved too provocatively. Yes, an obvious protest by Michelle Philips but the songwriting and harmonies of this group were fire and well worth checking into more.
Elvis had a three-performance deal with Ed Sullivan. The first two showed him entirely. The third was from the waist up. Ed came out after the third and praised Elvis as a fine, decent young man and a pleasure to work with.
Because of the "Doors controversy" with "Light my Fire", all acts after "The Doors" were required to lip sync their performances and this performance behavior was their way of protesting. . . . .
That performance was hilarious. All the top artists had to appear on Ed Sullivan. Thank You Mijo, wishing PEACE AND HEALTH FOR THE NEW YEAR 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️👵🏼 Gmaw
The harmonies 😊 BTW she's protesting with the banana cause they wanted them to lip-sync 😅 Please check out April Wine...Roller extended version 🙏 Great reaction and Peace out Cliff 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
Yes, as others have already pointed out they were upset because they wouldn't let them perform live, so they made it obvious that they were lip syncing.
fantastic 1960's group. The banana eater is the only surviving member. Interesting back story on how they grouped together, who liked who, who married who and who had an affair with their group mate, jealousy and drugs. You might recognize the off springs of the banana eater and the hat guy, Papa John, Chynna Phillips from the trio, Wilson Phillips. Also, his older daughter, actress Mackenzie Phillips. The larger size girl probably heard her name before, Mama Cass Elliot unfortunately, she passed away early. My favorite was Denny.
Michelle was expelled out of the band in June of 1966 after her husband (the one in the suit and hat) found out she had eaten more than one banana during their marriage including the the one belonging to the other guy (Denny Doherty) on the stage. Ironically she was reinstated in August of that same year after her replacement did not pan out.
Ironically, your comment on "being on an acid trip" was exactly what these four were experiencing. According to "Papa" John Phillips (the fellow rockin' the beaver pelt hat) they were all trippin' on LSD for this, and every other, performance. Those were the days my friend.
They were fighting on TV. She was pissed they wouldn't let them sing live. So she got the banana to show they weren't really singing. They we're dating. And about to break up She was like what the hell.. lol
I DIG ANYTHING BY THIS BAND!!! SO, SO GOOD!!! You can hear CASS in ANYTHING she sings in....SUCH a DISTINCTIVE VOICE!! If you hadn't done a reaction to Janis Joplin's Live performance at the Monterey Festival in 1967: You'll see Cass in the audience, listening to Janis. Michelle Phillips ate the banana to make it obvious they were lip-syncing for the show....FUNNY!!
Mama's and Papas are icons. Mama Cass the heavy-set gal passed away. She chocked on a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. Her voice was absolutely beautiful. Love your reaction!
Old man Rock fan here just found your channel and it is good to see you liking this music but you're wrong about that there's no good new bands but you're not looking in the right place just a few names to go check out The Yawpers,J.Roddy Walston and the Business,7 Horse The Brothers Dogg Des Roc , Lincoln Durham just off the top of my head it's out there but it's not easy to find unfortunately when they don't get any air play
That was Michelle's protest to the show's demand they lip synch the song.

@@decolonizeEverywhere Okay, it makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for the explanation.

Love this song. It's a great winter, gloomy day song.

Back in the 60sand70s Artists absolutely hated being told they had to lip sync
I find this song hauntingly beautiful. ✌️❤️
The Mamas and Papas were an icon of the 1960’s
The one eating the banana, Michelle Phillips, went on to become a very famous soap opera actress.
Classic song!!
They were amazing songwriters and harmony singers. The guy in the hat was known as the Wolf of LA. Mama Cass is legendary.
They wrote this will in NYC, missing California. Going into the church prending to pray (to get warm).

@@punkydoodle4774 Yes, I remember seeing that one and the look on Elvis face when he said it.
Well, you got the history of this era of the 1960's the acid trip and the hippie clothes. It was a completely different time than today.
Hi Cliff - She wanted to prove that they were lip-singing. ha
mommy!
lip-synching.
I love this song when they are actually live performing..
But they all dead raw haha😅😂
@@robertshockjr6570, not Michelle.

Merry Christmas Everyone! 🎄❤
The 60's was an Acid Trip, whether you indulged or not.
Such a "do your own thing" time.

One of the best songs ever.
One of the best songs ever written!
Here is a great song/video to check out it is Leaving on A jet plane by John Denver and Cass Elliot
Was in the 1979 movie with the same title "California Dreamin'".
Yes, as others have already pointed out they were upset because they wouldn't let them perform live, so they made it obvious that they were lip syncing.
This is going to be so much fun to watch
🌸 I don't believe I've said this before but I just want to tell you that I really admire your integrity as a human being and what you do for others.
I was a junior in high school. Loved these guys!
Dig into Mama Cass. Powerhouse of a voice. Sad story too.
I'm glad they finally got rid of the dumb fake story about how she died.
You're not trippin'.. they are!
If you’ve watched Janice Joplin at Monterey Pop, they focused on a woman in the audience. That woman was Mama Cass.
For New Years Eve you’ve hit to do “Same Old Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg. Perfect for the occasion.
Michelle was a babe😊
It’s been used hundreds of times over the years
Hahaha... That is hilarious! Love the song tho
❤❤❤❤❤❤
It was standard practice the studio version of the song was played and the performers would still sing, but into dead mics ....

This song was covered by sia I think and played in the movie San Andreas with the rock

Fashions influenced by London's Carnaby St. shoppes.

The Beach Boys did a great cover of this song. You should check it out.
Standard practice: lip sync on tv shows to the studio track. 60’s- late 70’s. The midnight Special was real “live”playing and singing!!!😀✊🤘✌️
They were fighting on TV. She was pissed they wouldn't let them sing live. So she got the banana to show they weren't really singing. They we're dating. And about to break up
She was like what the hell.. lol
They were probably on an acid trip. 😂

I have not seen this version. Apparently, Michelle wasn't happy about having to lip sync or something.
Mama's and Papas are icons. Mama Cass the heavy-set gal passed away. She chocked on a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. Her voice was absolutely beautiful. Love your reaction!
Every time i hear Creedence Clearwater i think of the Viet Nam war & the movies made about it.

Nice dad joke 😂
Lip syncing so they don't flub up. Typical of the day. The banana is to protest that.
Welcome to the psychedelic '60's
Michelle Phillips was not the voice, she was there to look pretty. Mama Cass was the only female voice of the Mama's and Papa's.
You had zero reaction to one of the most iconic songs of the age.
Odds are they was lip singing anyways
John Phillips was a horrible person.
Michelle Phillips didn’t like lip syncing that’s why she was eating a banana and pretending to sing
