Mr. L is the manifestation of Luigi getting tired of being under Mario's shadow.
Mr.L is literally a brainwashed Luigi who was brainwashed by Nastasia, the right hand woman to a villain known as Count Bleck. A tragic villain who had previously had the love of his wife tragically taken away from him by a prejudice father and attempted to destroy everything because life was meaningless without the love of his life.
I knew about Wanda, about Foreman Spike, about Mr L, about J-Son from Mario Land 2, about the human golfers from Mobile Golf (which aren't even the only characters like that in the series; Camelot's been doing that for most early handheld Mario Tennis and Mario Golf games, up until at least the GBA)...
But those OTHER Wrecking Crew 98 characters are definitely pretty... out there.
The rest I would know thanks to spirits and trophies in the Super Smash Bros series, or just scrolling the Mario Wiki for info on Mario Tennis and Mario Golf (since I love playing Mario Tennis and would eventually run into the Mario Golf side from there), but I never would have guessed that there was the disturbed ghost of a child in a game like this.
It should be mentioned that Barrio appears in Smash Ultimate as a spirit, and is named Wanda… Who is a fairy with a pink motif… Who also works with a green character. Hmmm… Kinda familiar…

Formen Spike is also making a comeback in the new Mario movie according to the voicecast reveal. Still this was a great video and I've learned about Onnanoko which is a character I didn't even know existed despite knowing about Wreaking Crew 98.
I have no idea how they will handle Foreman Spike in the new movie but I am definitely interested!
Loved learning about Wrecking Crew 98's story, it is so messed up. I do also wanna play the game myself cause it looks like a pretty fun game, it's an interesting take on Wrecking Crew's original gameplay style.
One of my favorite obscure "characters" is Bowser's Brother from Lost Levels, who is a blue-tinted Bowser in 8-4 (maybe also D-4 I forget) but isn't one of the Fake Bowsers since he doesn't turn into a normal enemy when killed with fireballs. I put character in quotes because Nintendo in recent times will either ignore him or keep his relationship to Bowser vague, which is a shame because if they decided to retcon the Koopalings being Bowser's kids, then it would be interesting to have them just be his brother's kids instead.
also they should name him Wowser
i once looked out of curiosity "does bowser have a relative" and learned about fucking blue bowser the fucking whiplash was funny.

10:11 I wouldn't say that's the actual Mr. L, but instead a Floro Sprout in control of Luigi's body calling itself Mr. L. What happened to all of his personality? Why is he suddenly serving Dimentio after what happened to him last time? I think the 'Mr. L' part of it was just an excuse to throw in a reveal at the end, not that it wasn't obvious already.
That's fair to say. It was a super odd moment.
If you paid attention to Chapter 5, Dimentio realized the Floro Sprout on top of the cavemens head can control them, so he tested it on O'Chunks and was able to control him with the sprout. Even one of the instant Game Overs near the end of the final Chapter Dimentio mind controlled the player using the sprout.

Mr L is not as underrated as the other characters you mentioned. But yeah he's really great. I don't know if you saw the Nintendo High series by Foozle on youtube, but Mr.L has a role in two episodes, and he's really cool.

Personally I'm a Mario fan since so long I don't remember when it started. I think my oldest memories when it comes to Mario are a few blurry memories of me playing Mario Sunshine, and getting stuck at one of the levels where Anti Mario steals Fludd.

I didn't even know Spike was an original character before watching this video. I thought he was just a new character they used for the Mario Movie. But after watching this, it feels kinda cool to see a very old character brought back in the movie.

I've always liked the Pumpkin Zone in general in Super Mario Land 2. That vampire is so weird though because it's just that one vampire in the entire game and his purpose is for you to jump on one of his bats to reach a higher up secret on the right. Why this enemy has never appeared again anywhere ever is such a mystery to me.
Anyways as a kid in the 90s who hadn't seen any Friday the 13th films at the time, I didn't realize the reference to Jason with that masked wearing enemy, especially considering I didn't even realize the name was J-son
Holy crap, I had no idea about the Barrio thing, I thought this was a gag video at first when I heard that. Weird, obscure Mario characters is what I live for, man, and knowing weird trivia like how Wanda, a character who only appeared in a Japan-exclusive game was called "Barrio" in an issue of a UK magazine really gets my Mario nerd juices a-flowing!
Also, Nintendo is apparently changed Foreman Spike's Japanese name to "Spike" starting with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so maybe they intend to use him more? That would be pretty sweet, he's one of my favorite obscure Mario characters.

God I love dimentio as a character
Maybe it’s just me but he felt like an antagonist that really dug nails deep into other characters. He manipulates the evil team he was on to make them fight Mario, let’s Mario and Luigi end up to the pure heart and snatches it at the end because he knew only someone like Mario could ever awaken the pure heart, makes Luigi his puppet, AND GETS AWAY AT THE END OF THE GAME
The dude gots his slip ups here and there, but he knows how to get his shit done. Dimentio is ( as far as I know ) one of the only characters to not get obliterated right into the heavens by Mario.
I honestly wish he would come back, but I don’t think Nintendo cares that much for the jester :(

not even Kiro himself would protest that those weird characters never come out from their respective games to be appeared at the mainline Mario games, instead we always get goombas and koppas for every single Mario mainline games. it's seems interesting if those weird characters would appear at mainline Mario games. are Nintendo shame about them? despite how weird Bowser is? what kind of creature is he? a turtle? a dragon? a dinosaur? who always kidnapped Peach to be married? not to mentioned that Peach is a human meanwhile Bowser is some weird random monster? cross species marriage? isn't that weird enough?
Woulda been nice to get Mr L as a costume for Luigi in Smash Bros at the least, epsecially since basically everyone gets an evil counterpart costume

The reason why Mario and Wario was in english was because Nintendo planned to release the game internationally. Poor sales in Japan caused Nintendo to have second thoughts regarding a wide release hence Mario and Wario ended up being a Japanese exclusive game.
