I love how when I watched this as a child and thought how the father was such a tool. Rewatching it, the Dad may not understood Anarchy, but he understood that Steve-o's rebellion is just a phase in his life like when the father was young and went to Woodstock. One of the greatest coming to age films.

I must say this movie is a classic about under examined youth. It really resonated with me. I grew up in a somewhat small town with not a lot going on for a teenager. Similar to the characters and people living in SLC. Not a lot going on. So, the young and spirited youth try to scream themselves into existence. It's about identity, and I empathize. Saw this as an early teenager and before I knew it I was sporting a a mohawk in my small town!

When I first watched this I thought this scene was funny. But after my second go watching the movie I realized in reality the father is 100% telling him the truth and was right. It was all an act and he was going through a phase. That's the whole point of the movie. All his rants, all his so called wisdom, was all BS and his dad knew it. Which made him a good father letting him go through this phase.

On the DVD Commentary Matthew Lillard said he liked this scene in the script but asked Merendino if he could improv some new material while the cameras were rolling.
About 75% of his lines from this scene arent in the script. He just got into character and went to town. He made this film.

Except Ferdinand Porsche was indeed a member of the Nazi Party, and the company helped design military vehicles built with slave labour for the Fuhrer’s attempt to take over Europe and eradicate Jews.

But it's actually the honest representation of the punk scene: Heroine Bob and Steve-o. One coming from trash getting his anger out; The other rich with every opportunity wanting to burn it all out of rebellion. My brother started a punk band with his best friend. They took me along with them. All the kid's were like this. Even my brother and his best friend. My brother and I came from not so good family. I remember a week my mother not paying the electrical bill or heating up a pot of water on the stove for a bath. Meanwhile my brother's best friend came from a rich family. His mother was literally our landlord at one point (btw she kicked us out of there for not paying rent lol).

Hot take: All top leaders of any successful rebellion came from middle class or richer family, that paid for the education that makes them successful leaders. Washington, Robespierre, Marx, Engels, Lenin, Mao, Castro, Guevarra all had privileged childhood
Even freaking Bin Laden was a rich kid of a billionaire.

Everyone goes through teenaged angst and thinks they know everything. You cringe at what you were like when you had no life experience, then cringe at how you come across to your own kids as a parent, because all teenagers think you are somehow out of touch with modern times. There is nothing glamorous about a punk lifestyle. You've got to live your life and everything, but even having lived through post-punk and doing some things, I am surprised all of my friends and I are still alive, albeit injured as shit from days of pounding beers and gaining back problems.
