    It's been a long time since I saw this movie but I remember a scene where Stevie and his Dad are in a restaurant talking about school and Stevie basically tells him how he cheated his way through school BUT the Dad basically said "if you didn't care about school why did you make the effort into cheating" and to this day that scene still sticks w/ me to this day.

      @@roblangada4516 This has been my major problem with the whole punk ethos that ate up my high school and college years -- a problem I only later recognized the weight of. The society I hated provided the stability for my father to work hard and provide for us. Nearing 40, I've learned personal responsibility accounts for the vast majority of the injustices I used to gripe about. Still they've got some dang good music.

    I love that no matter how much of a sellout/dork/whatever you want to call him he is, Stevo's dad is actually really supportive of whatever it is that Stevo does. Even if he doesnt fully understand how Stevo thinks of things, its clear that he actually loves and cares about his son, and both wants his son to do what's best for himself and also do something that will better his life.

    • @andrewcook1246
      @andrewcook1246 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thats why when Bob and Trish told him the girl they were gonna introduce him to at her party was a rich girl, he very self-awarely says he's a rich boy too. With a little disdain but fully aware that his parents gave him plenty of love support and freedom to prove them right in the end.

    • @georgewilliamson5667
      @georgewilliamson5667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@andrewcook1246 Yeah. Things like that are what makes this such an awesome movie, with this being a really big part of it. It doesnt diminish the plight of the many poor friends who Stevo has, shows that rich people can have very real and meaningful solidarity with their poor friends, while also not demonizing rich people either by showing that Stevos parents actually love and support him, even if they dont quite get what he is doing.
      It does a great job of humanizing all of its characters, regardless of what their background is, and especially making a point about how all of us regardless of background can make a difference. This is especially true because Stevo is our protagonist. By having him be a rich kid from a rich family, it makes a great point how everyone can see the same issues, and also how oppression is not jus the plight of the poor, we just have different resources in how we fight against that oppression, with Stevo eventually recognizing what his position in society is and being able to take his experiences hanging out with the marginalized members of society and be able to translate that understanding into him using his law degree to fight the system from the inside.

    I wish someone would upload the car scene he had with his dad. This scene and the car scene really shows even with their disagreements Stevo and his dad have a great relationship. Like his father is happy that Stevo has all these opinions but feels like he's doing nothing with it. Yeah he's not a fan of how he's dress or the fact he rejected Harvard, but he's super supportive of Stevo, and Stevo doesn't even act out that much either. The one moment I loved is as they're talking, his dad brings up how well Stevo did in school, and Stevo says he "cheated" through school, his did sees through that bullshit and goes "ok why cheat if you didn't care about your grades"

    This scene out of context doesn't really represent the movie. Stevo in the movie is 4 years after this, he's toned down. His dad is a lot more relaxed about his son's personality. they have a relaxed relationship with easy banter. Also, Stevo somehow never turned into a burnout he graduated from college with a money earning degree.

    One of the reasons I love this movie is because it shows me that when you were younger, you have immature, thoughts and beliefs about certain things, it’s not until you reach a certain age where you’re like. Oh yeah, I totally got to get my shit together and fix everything and make everything better just like he does in the movie, parents want what is best for their kids, that’s why his parents never shamed him or treated him like an outcast for the way he was dressed or acted, and then he had some real bad shit happen to him like people usually do in life, and then he decided to change it and for the better more or less that’s why I love this movie, because I lived a very crazy lifestyle for the past like six years and I’m 24, I just had a couple friends pass away the last couple years and it really should be nothing more that I gotta get my shit together and be responsible not be an imbecile just like he does at the end of the movie! I understand that not everybody has parents, but you can’t use that as an excuse, just be the best person you can be.
    If you are a bad person that does crappy things to people, the chance of good things happening to you are less than none but if you’re a good person, being good, helping people, not being an asshole, you will get far in this life. They say the good die Young but I say, I think they die because they just didn’t get where they needed to be to change things around where or when they needed too most!

    You know...I just had an interesting thought about the sequel.
    They could've had Stevo return. Imagine if you will if Ross (aka Heroine Bob and Trish's son) towards the end of the movie was arrested for attempted murder or something. They had to do something, so Sean and Trish reached out and got a hold of Stevo who is not a hotshot attorney in New York.
    Ross doesn't know who his attorney is until he comes in and introduces himself. At the end when he gets the kid cleared of his crimes, maybe have him pass on his razorblade necklace or something. Just a thought

    @Fandanglius That was the whole point of the movie, he's being a poser most of the time, and he realizes that at the end, that's why I loved it :)
