CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) loses his cool at Whammy Burger when informed that they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30 am.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

The fact that they had the breakfast meal just waiting there and still made a big deal of it makes this scene all the better.
I’m so glad someone else noticed this! It was one of my favorite details.
Dude was probably gonna eat it on his break. Selfish
Back in the day I went in a McDonald's and they had breakfast..on the hot lamp..they talked me out into an expensive meal...this shows us how we are supposed to take it..3 minutes before lunch and we can't even get breakfast with a damn coffee and coffee is life for morning workers.
Perhaps that breakfast burger was going to be put into someone's order. It had been cooked and was waiting to be sorted. So the customer almost robbed someone of their breakfast order that was decent enough to order before the cut off.

After he shoots up the ceiling, he was scared of himself. That was great acting by Michael Douglas and the extras in the scene.
Oh I thought he did that on purpose lol
During my teens I was like that, I didn't shoot the ceiling, but I always looked scared and shy. People thought I was scared of them, they were very wrong. I was a black hole waiting to happen.
It's amazing that when you can't control your anger, when you eventually lose it, you suck everyone around you into your problem. Some people explode immediately after an altercation, and people know to stay clear and avoid them. But a black hole gives them no chance, it's as if they are stuck in an event horizon.
Thankfully I'm now more of a white dwarf nearing a black dwarf existence.
@@EdwardSinclair that's pretty intense

Sheila makes this scene. If she was scared and terrified like the rest of the employees and customers, she would have just been another face in the crowd, but the fact that she seems to be loving the excitement, and has a rather sarcastic attitude and seems to be reveling in the confrontation between Rick and Bill, makes her performance the most interesting and amusing in this scene.
Nah, she just gets in the way, Michael Douglas character makes this scene.
She absolutely does. During WW2 there was studies done that found that during intense firefights most people did not even fire their weapons - as fear/self preservation kicks in for most normal people - so they kept their heads down in the foxholes. They found that among the small minority - who were doing most of the firing - were a large number of psychopaths. So it was recommended that it would be beneficial to actually try and identify these people, and distribute them evenly over the infantry platoons - as they encouraged others to get up and fire.
That's 'Sheila' here. Everyone is afraid but her - she is in her element 🙂
She's gorgeous. Unsurprisingly... considering she's Michelle Pfieffers sister ❤

Sheila is fantastic in this scene. She's so bored at her job that she finds this situation amusing rather than scary.
The genius behind Sheila being portrayed as the fed up fast food worker is that it adds to the already existing symbolism of dismantling the faulty system. But I think it is kind of weird for Sheila to have an apparent attraction to Foster as she is seen nursing her pen and having been enthralled by his behavior. I wonder if that was a scripted thing or a post production thing?

They probably make enough breakfast so there's always some on the heating tray, so that when a customer comes in, they can server them fast, hence fast food. And once they are done, and there's stuff left they throw it out
@@stephenhauer9055 But what they grabbed was something the manager flat out REFUSED to sell him. If it were running according to what you said, she would have just grabbed one that was there and said "you are in luck we still have a few left".
@@MrShadowpanther3 No, cos they don't care what they have left and if they throw it out, they just have to stick to the company policy otherwise everyone will ask for breakfast after 11:30
@@stephenhauer9055 I used to work at McDonalds and that was pretty much the same policy. Once breakfast time ends, you had to remove what was left. The only thing they saved was the meat. Everything else got thrown out because it would turn soggy. Funny thing is, when reheated, the meat actually made it taste better. One of those mysteries I've never figured out because no customer ever complained that the meat was overcooked. Might have something to do with my method. I knew it was already cooked so I heated it on the grill just enough to make it hot because I always feared I would burn it and it would be harder than cardboard. But trust me, the eggs, biscuits and other stuff, they went in the garbage. There's simply no way to reheat those and have them taste any good.

I don't think any of us 'like' him in the sense we think what he's doing is right in a moral sense. Just like irl we wouldn't root for Darth Vader as he cut down the rebels in Rogue One.
@@RequiemPoete You'd be surprised, the number of people who think he's doing what's right in a moral sense.
But no, IRL, I was totally rooting for Vader. It was SOOOO good returning to Vader's badass roots.

You couldn't have what you wanted, you were forced to choose something else, and that something else wasn't even what they promised. It's enough to make a guy go crazy.

how do you know it was his wife?
Do as I do
I love how the writers knew his gunfire being an accident is more scary than it being intentional. The only thing scarier than a bad guy with a gun is a bad guy who can't control it.
Back then he was not the bad guy. He was tired of the bad guys changing the rules n ripping people off.
You had to have lived at least in the 60’s n 70’s to know why he was actually the good guy n the movie was made to make him look like the bad guy by the evil merchants n leaders changing everything!

All the difficulty that he received over getting some breakfast made him hungrier for something more substantial. :)
It’s the principle.. everything is with him.. that’s the whole point of the movie is to make people understand the problems with everyday society

The fact that he changes his mind and orders lunch is such a genius idea. It literally makes the purpose for this entire situation completely irrelevant and pointless. It's genius because it shows us just how insane he really is.
The scene is peak black comedy
He have been mad about the society so instead keeping his anger better just, well do
@@TypeKK he’s just lashing out
It's a metaphor for him not being past the point of no return yet. He's not ready to be the "bad guy" yet, so he changes his mind and orders lunch like society expects of him.
He changed his mind because the script wanted to show the viewer the flat burger compared to the advertised one, which we all have seen in real life. We can understand where he is coming from.
Same with him ordering at 11:33, the viewer can relate to his frustration, especially when they infact have breakfast meals on the shelf, but he can’t order one.
Fun fact - this scene was based on real life james Huberty . The only difference is James actually killed 23 people and injured another 20 .
