The Oscars talking shit about animation, saying how kids love it and adults suffer through it, has got to be the BIGGEST middle finger to the animation industry and community. Animation is a medium filled with powerful storytelling and artistically amazing visuals made through hard work. Many of our most beloved movies of all time are animated from How To Train Your Dragon to Into The Spider-Verse. Yes, kids can find these films enjoyable but so can adults too. Animation is for everyone and anyone and no one should miss out on it. #AnimationIsForEveryone
Not just movies… series, too! I have a hard time naming good live-action shows I’ve watched, but I can name several masterpiece animated shows off the top of my head, like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Arcane, Cowboy Bebop…
@@furiouslydashing290 the Academy saying that shit about animation and then you bringing up Arcane just made my blood boil again. Arcane’s animation, from style to movement to symbolism, is such a testament to how animation enhances a story and there’s NEVER a dull moment in a piece of animated media because EVERY SINGLE FRAME had to be made from scratch with intention and purpose, or else it’s a waste.
@@pokaay3163 It took them SIX YEARS to make nine episodes. The sheer amount of effort put into it is astounding. I’m on the season 2 hype train. If they somehow top what they’ve already done, I’ll be really impressed.
The disrespect they had in the animation category calling it a kids category! Animation is a medium not a genre. And one of the nominee was a very serious film
That’s actually impressive they think it’s for kids It would be a shame if there was a little thing called ADULT SWIM OR NETFLIX THAT HAVE CARTOONS FOR AND BY ADULTS!!!
At this point, Im going for my degree in the arts and im gonna make my projects *purposefully* mature enough that NO ONE will be able to repeat that lie
Animation isnt just a medium being ignored, its an objectively superior medium than live action. There isnt a single thing you could do in live action, that you couldnt do better with animation, it is that simple. No hate on any of the talented actors working on live action (or stage, for that matter) productions by the way, but anything you can act, you can animate, and animation will always allow for a more expressive, more creative portrayal of your story because it isnt bound by reality the way real actors are.
Honestly, I can't think of anyone better than Amy Schumer to host the Oscars. The unfunny comedian desperately trying to stay relevant is a perfect fit for the unfunny ceremony desperately trying to stay relevant.
At this point, they might as well get Ricky Gervais to host the Oscars. At least people would get a laugh out of him ripping into Hollywood and its hypocrisy.
disrespecting editors and voice actors who don’t actually appear in public often in favour for obnoxious and unfunny live actors is just so painfully numbing
@@ijustlikebees Technically only James Baskett is the only actor to win a voice actor role despite his Honorary Oscar only mentioning his Uncle Remus role as he voiced Brer Fox.
Voice actors? What are those!? All I know are popular, “trendy” A-List actors that are hired to do voices in animated movies regardless of whether they fit the role.
Honestly the biggest insult of the Oscars isn’t only the We don’t talk about Bruno Butchered version, but it was the fact that they degraded animation as being Kids stuff that honestly pissed me off
The fact that they don't take animation seriously explains why mediocre movies like brave and happy feet won the oscars while some masterpieces like How to train your dragon (the 3 movies), a slient voice and shrek 2 never did
@@justsomeguywholovesberserk6375 Boss Baby was nominated. It didn't win. thankfully. But for it to be nominated but not Redline or Promare though... THAT is inexcusable.
I'm still pissed that the year Spiderverse won, the Academy interrupted the speech right as they were thanking Lee and Ditko for creating the character in the first place. On its own, that would be awful already, but Spiderverse was released the same year that both Lee and Ditko died. So the movie is a love letter to both its creators, and the speech was acknowledging them both, and the Academy decided to disrespect their memories. Absolutely disgusting.
Excuse me while I throw up out of respect for the men who literally created Spider-Man. Fuck the Academy, man. The Oscars used to be better than this and they fucking shit the bed every year now.
google broght me this urban legend: "Academy librarian and eventual executive director Margaret Herrick thought the statue resembled her Uncle Oscar. In 1934, Sidney Skolsky used the name in his Hollywood column to describe Katharine Hepburn’s first best actress win. The name caught on and the Academy made the name official in 1939."
As someone who is aspiring to become a film editor and is currently going for my own Bachelors Degree in Film Production, I’m honestly appalled that they sacked Best Editing out of the main show. I will always say that Editing is one of the most crucial aspects of filmmaking, along with being one of the most underrated names in the credits despite it almost always being in the first few names shown. I didn’t watch the Oscars live and only heard about Smith and Rock duking it out, so thank you for actually bringing this to my attention Schaff.
True. Editing can make or brake a film. Even the best movie can turn into a mediocre one, if the editing is butchered. On the other hand, a mediocre movie can turn into an amazing movie into a masterpiece during the editing process.
WHAT THE WHAT??? i am over 100 years old and still making youtub videos? oh yeah baby. why? because i am the ultimate youtuber. woo woo woo you know it dear
Can we please talk about their lack of respect for Voice Actors as well. At least the animated movie award gets at least something, but voice actors aren't even given a best vocal performance award. Which absolutely disgusts me and it shows just how little they care about vocal performance. Hell, video game awards respect voice actors performances and actually care about them, even more than the Oscars and some of the anime community (yes I said it, dub actors are so underrated and need respect just as much as Japanese VAs).
You sir, deserve more likes. Because most of anime community is living in same blissfully ignorant bubble like Hollywood of "subs are allways better then dubs" while mast watch animes like Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Love is war, etc. are allways preferred to be watched in dub.
@@madkoala2130 main reason why people shit on dubs is because most of the dubs are boring and doesn't bring out the same emotion and energy as the jp casts do, the only dub that I can say is on par with the original (that I've seen) is Kaguya-sama and Konosuba
Even as someone who usually prefers sub over dub when it comes to anime (because it’s the original, it helps me learn Japanese, and I prefer reading to hearing), I absolutely DEPISE it when people hate on the entirety of voice actors on anime dubs (and by extension, every VA in the English voice acting industry) no matter how good or bad of a person they really are, to the point of sending them death threats. Like, they’re just reading from a script? That’s all voice actors do, if you hate English dubs then don’t attack the voice actors involved, they do nothing but speak, grunt, and talk for their jobs, and they need to get paid, too. Putting anime out of the discussion, yes, as someone who wants to be a VA, it’s really disrespectful how the Oscars don’t have a voice acting award! While I hate the Game Awards too, at least they have some respect and honor for VAs. That is one of the few things that put them slightly above the Oscars for me, although they are bad too.
Amy Schumer claiming she was 'traumatized' by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock only to admit she was going to make a tasteless joke about Alex Baldwin accidentally shooting Halyna Hutchins, after she was told its not a good idea to make that joke in the oscars, is the perfect plot twist to this year of oscars
How tf is it traumatizing to watch someone get slapped? Sometimes I feel like the stuff I was traumatized about isn't as bad as some people's so I feel bad for feeling this way. But when someone claims to be traumatized because SOMEONE SLAPPED SOMEONE ELSE, I don't feel as bad anymore.
@@gianna526 maybe amy shumer is a hero in disguise. like, her saying she was traumatized by celebrity drama is so dumb that it somehow 180s into validating for people who have actually had bad shit happen to them at some point
And people in the video game industry wonder why I don't want shit like The Game Awards to become "the oscars of video games". We get enough cringe in real time on twitter and interviews, I don't need a 3 hour segment of ads for that there too.
The man stayed home and watched a hockey game the year he won best actor and I'm sure many of us would rather watch him do just that instead of suffering through another Oscar ceremony.
as someone who prides himself on editing linked with a huge passion with how they can use it to mould a film, it really is disgusting how they ride off like it's basically nothing especially at the "top- of the industry"
I think that your vids alongside internet historians and Michale reeves videos are some of the best demonstrations of the importance of editing in the modern TH-cam scene. Keep the content up my dude!
Like, STAR WARS was famously saved by the editing and was a colossal train wreck mess before the final edit went over it. Moved around Luke's introduction, cut subplots, cut the death start run from 2 down to 1, etc... Editing is super important.
There's a channel called editing is everything. If you wanna know the POWER of editing check them out. It's incredible what little tweaks can do. You can even change the entire GENRE of a film from action to horror.
@@robbybevard8034 I agree that editing is very important but that’s literally not true. The rocket jump video is completely wrong and barely anything they say is true. Star Wars was not “saved” in the edit. It went trough the normal editing process every single film goes trough. If you actually want to learn how Star Wars was made, read skywalking, the making of Star Wars by j.w rinzler, listen to the commentary tracks and extras in the DVD’s and watch “empire of dreams”

Amy Schumer was “traumatized” by someone getting slapped but wanted to make a joke about a situation where someone literally lost their life. I guess it’s okay because she didn’t have to witness that one lmfao
Like Amy Schumer can even tell a joke. She makes me want to agree with what Joker said in a Batman (TNBA) episode: "If you have to explain a joke, THERE IS NO JOKE! You forgotten what I told you, one of the painful truths of comedy: YOU ALWAYS TAKE SHOTS AT FOLKS WHO DON'T GET THE JOKE!"
If you want to know more reasons why the Oscars have a huge bias hatred to animation, Beauty and the Beast from 1992 is one of the main reasons. Turns out from a tweet from Variety, it turns out the Academy were concerned that a animated movie got nominated for Best Picture and that there's a potential it could win Best Picture so they wanted to make the "Best animated feature" category to prevent it from happening, and Chicken Run convinced them to do so (Heck back than, some critics claimed it was "Best Picture" nomination material). In other words... *THE ACADEMY IS AFRAID OF ANIMATION WINNING BEST PICTURE... or just animation in general, so they just shit on it the whole time*
@@zombieguy4444 Yes. But I think Snow White should have been the FIRST one nominated considering how obvious the impact it had on cinema is. I mean, how else could you explain why we have feature length animated films?
@@one-onessadhalf3393 But that was for Special Achievement, and while it was nice for the Academy at that time to acknowledge Snow White as a technical achievement for both innovating and pioneering animation as a film genre, it would have been more honorable to nominate the film for Best Picture for being such an innovation in both animation and *cinema*
I love how they tried pushing the medium of animation is “only for kids.” When Encanto (which was up for an Oscar), doesn’t even try to hide the fact that it’s generational trauma and how it effected adults. Just wow
@@xandrixt44 Yeah, I'd rather use Arcane as a recent example. Definitely, unapologetically and obviously heavy and serious, much more so than the cartoonish Encanto, which is serious, but if you want to get your point through, you gotta use a better example.
About 1% of me wishes she said it so the Twitter train could take her down once and for all. Don’t get me wrong, I would never explicitly want anyone to make a joke at the expense of a dead person, but seeing Amy Shumer have a fall from stardom would be immensely satisfying.
The degrading animation to a kid genre was the most offensive thing the Academy as done to the industry. I love Encanto and I personally thought it should’ve won anyways because it, like some “kids” movies was still a genuine masterpiece. But there are some fucking brilliantly mature adult pieces of animation that the Academy almost always refuses to nominate and NEVER rewards. Fucking shameful
they went "haha animation is for kids lol' meanwhile one of the Animated feature nominations was a Adult Animated film about the conflict in Afghanistan
People just fail to understand that Animation gives creators a medium to do things that are impossible in live action and thus provide an opportunity to tell something unique
Just be aware when you label “the academy” as being dismissive of Animation, you are including probably some of your fave actors in that as many are academy members, when it’s highly likely they don’t look down on Animation. For example, several years ago Meryl Streep did an interview where she was asked some fun random questions and one of them was what was the last movie she watched on an airplane and she said Finding Dory 😊

The only good thing about this year’s Oscars is the fact that Samuel L. Jackson won his FIRST OSCAR EVER since being in the film industry (which is a crime in itself that he didn’t win more). A shame it’s being overshadowed by that damn slap
What is it with the Oscars giving talented people their awards that they should have won earlier in their careers? First DiCaprio, then Roger Deakins, and now Samuel L. Jackson.
The fact that Alfred Hitchcock got NO Oscars, and Stanley Kubrick only won ONE Oscar for their many masterpieces says it all. (For those who don't know, they're two of the greatest filmmakers of ALL TIME.)
Alfred Hitchcock didn't win anything. He directed Rebecca which won best picture, but the award went to the producer of the film David O Selznick, not to Hitchcock. The thing people don't understand is that the best picture Oscar awards the producer(s) of the film, not the director who is the person responsible for the quality of a film. That's why the best picture category is so meaningless, in 1973, when The Godfather won best picture they didn't rewarded Francis Ford Coppola, who was responsible for all the decisions that lead that film to be so good (casting Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, shooting the film in dark lighting, focusing on the family drama, changing aspects from the book along with Mario Puzo to make it more cinematic, etc.) and instead rewarded Albert S Ruddy, an asshole who wanted Coppola fired from day one, and if it had been for him, the movie would've been a cheesy gangster flick starring Robert Redford as Michael Corleone.
@@erikhumphrey7922 Ironic you’re saying this in a year where he not only didn’t get a Best Supporting a Oscar nomination, but did get a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor in “House of Gucci”!
I love animated movies and how kid friendly they are! I show my kids wholesome family content like Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Fantastic Planet, and Ghost in the Shell! It teaches them amazing and age-appropriate life lessons such as why humans can't be trusted with the power of God, the unimaginable suffering of war and how it impacts even the most innocent members of society, why violence is acceptable if used for liberation, and understanding if consciousness is what makes us human. I recommend all parents show their young kids these adorable little movies.
Ok, now name one mature animated movie made by an American company that didn't flop financially. America just doesn't have a big adult animated audience, so they aren't wrong to go onto an American awards show and say animated movies are for kids. This may be different in Japan, but in America animated movies are 100% for kids. It's a cultural thing. Even most of the mature animated tv in the US is meant to parody family entertainment, which is why so much of it is comedic family sitcom with of course it's edgy twists.
@@iminumst7827 "It's a cultural thing" should never be used as an excuse to defend an absolutely stupid point of view. This goes double in this scenario, because the Oscars present themselves as a celebration of film making as a whole. Degrading an entire medium of film-making because of such an asinine reason is disgraceful. Get back in the coffin, gramps.
Considering the Oscars give the award to the wrong film, wrong actor and actress and director most of the times, it's no surprise most people don't like the Oscars
I love movies. But I literally hate the Oscars with every fibre of my body for downgrading not only the good ones but also the people who worked hard on them. So you're not wrong. Edit: Wanted to put in more words to express my opinion properly
the most unbelievable part of this year's oscars to me was regina hall's "covid emergency" bit where the whole haha funny was that she was going to use her position to go backstage and sexually assault timothee chalamet. the actors she called up were all trying to be good sports but it was obvious none of them were keyed in beforehand, it was truly unbearable to watch. while most of it was just distasteful "comedy", her feeling up josh brolin without his permission is what we in the industry call "an unacceptable offence" and "a crime"
Yeah, what Regina Hall did was pretty cringe. If a male host did that to an actress, they would cancel him. Edit: not to mention the three were insulting Timothée Chalamet’s face, and Regina stated that she would “still smash him”. Like how does the guy not feel violated?
@@osmanyousif7849 yet we had Chris rock up on stage who groped Ariana grande and everyone is pretending he’s some traumatized victim for a slap. It’s not a gender issue. It’s classism.
And you just know that if it was the other way around, Josh feeling up Regina out of nowhere as a bit gag, he would've been slandered across every major and backwater news outlet across the country as a sexually harassing creep. But because it was a woman doing it to a guy, it's just lol funniezzzzzzz.
Well the tone deafness is that it's a powerful Hollywood person using her position to sexually harass someone and they seriously thought people would look and think "it's a good thing Hollywood doesn't ACTUALLY do that!"
"It seems like we're aiming at a child audience, but everyone can laugh at the basic human traits that are funny. It's playful, the humor is playful, the world is playful. You can kind of let go." -Stephen Hillenburg
I can't believe that I heard about the slap but not that equally appalling Regina Hall skit. NOT OKAY!!! Sexual harassment doesn't stop being a thing just because it's done by a woman to a man!!! Yeesh!!!! I'm so sad more people aren't speaking up for them! Thanks for calling her out!!!!
I bet if Josh Brolin Jason Momoa and Timothée Chalamet said “I felt violated!”, the audience would be all laughing. What a miserable joke that show was.
My dad used to work as a rights lawyer/general manager for the Oscars up until his death a few years ago. From the way he told it, the whole event was a structural and logistical dumpster fire that was BARELY held together by a few people who actually knew what they were doing. No hate on the crew that actually had to build and run everything on award night (went to a rehersal a few days before the show and its just as hectic as you'd think), but the executive decisions are being handled by people who really have no business managing the show.
i mean it makes sense that the show is unorganisased. i swear in this years oscars it was really obvious to see when most of the presenters or host where reading the teleprompter. if they had to more time to plan and rehurse it wouldve looked better
My main issue is that the best animated picture award became the Disney best animated feature award. It took a movie like Spiderverse to win against them. A lot of anime movies snubed.
Yeah, no hate towards Encanto because I love that movie, but I was really hoping for TMVTM to get the award. Both movies are visually beautiful but one, TMVTM’s was more unique in style and two, Disney gets the animated feature award so often that it wouldve been nice that another studio got it instead!
It's a huge shame that Disney as a corporation is so despicable that it leaves a smudge on a lot of their best recent movies, Encanto being a prime example. The creators of many of Disney's movies genuinely put a lot of care and effort into what they create, but still have to face being chained to their corporation, and victories that they deserve feel bittersweet at best because we know the corporate executives j**k off to those wins at the same time and don't truly care about the effort put into it. And with the Academy shamelessly shitting on animation the way they do and Disney not saying anything about it, it's clear that they just mooch off the money and fame of it all while the creators suffer the ridicule and poor treatment. At least we can all agree it's better that Encanto won rather than Raya and the Last Dragon. Like, can you freaking IMAGINE how that would've gone down? (P.S. Even though it didn't win, can we appreciate Sebastian Yatra's live performance of Dos Oruguitas? The way he performed through his visible nerves is the mark of someone who really cares about what they do. Also, that butterfly suit is *chef's kiss*.)
We as a people should join to raise money to Buy Disney as a whole, then fire all executives and file a restraining order to prevent their return, then sell everything that was bought.
As animation: Disney really does a nice job showing emotion and connection As a company: they are a soul sucking money grubbing company I feel bad because I can tell that a lot of people put a lot of hard work in their projects but get hate because of where they come from.
And the thing is that there genuinely is nothing wrong with some movies being intended for kids. It's just equating all animation to "just kid stuff" that's ridiculous! Hell, as an adult I'd take an animated film (either 3D or traditional) any day over ANY live action equivalent.
right? i recently had a friendly debate with one of my friends about why i think a lot of what disney puts out IS worthwhile. specifically the animation. at the end of the day, those movies are crafted by artists and it is a beautiful product of team work, talent, long hours, hard work. i know frozen is almost universally hated now bc of the mass marketing and people didn't love frozen 2, but if you watch the making of frozen 2 documentary on disney+ it is really cool to see the individual people and their families behind such a massive production. these are just individual artistic talented people and what they make is beautiful.
as someone in tech theater, lack of recognition for bts people isn’t just a hollywood problem. i’m pretty sure it’s at every level, which is kind of disheartening
It guts shit like animation as a medium the hardest cause literally most of all animation could be labeled under “bts stuff” so getting any recognition at all is a miracle whenever it flies by
Thats a reason I check the credits. Even in details like "oh we nominated the composer, but we wont talk about the actual symphonic orchestra" Do you have any idea of how many movies have soundtracks played by the Warsaw Orchestra? Or London? Or Tokyo? NO ONE CARES!
Animation gets it pretty rough in the Oscars, but you know what genre gets it even worse? Horror. It sucks that some genuinely fantastic horror movies like Hereditary and The VVitch don't get the recognition they truly deserve, whether it be editing, acting, or screenplay. Horror is a legit movie category and some of the most critically acclaimed movies of the past few years have been in horror.
There’s a reason people like Dead Meat are making awards for horror, other than animation, horror is EASILY the most shafted in the Oscars. And it’s such bullshit.
Yes, Horror has had a great comeback in the last few years (Quiet Place, Hereditary, Annihilation, Get Out, etc.), but other than Get Out, most of it hasn't been given proper recognition. And I love Get Out but if it wasn't a film about racism it wouldn't have gotten the recognition that it did get.
not even a horror fan but I recognize how much that genre goes snubbed. Like I will see an odd horror film or two when friends say it is worth the watch, but damn do these critically acclaimed gems go overlooked.
Animation definitely has it worse than Horror in my opinion. Sure, good Horror movies don't get nominated for stupid reasons. But at least they don't nominate awful horror movies like Saw or something, and then try to explain that the movie is a genuine work of art with great acting, themes and horror. Like, animation fans had to endure a Boss Baby nomination over movies like A Silent Voice or Your Name. Also, half of the work that goes into animation don't have a category at the Oscars. Like Best Voice Actor, or Animation Director (since that's very different to Directing Live Action). And before someone says there shouldn't be a Best Animation Director category. There are also two different categories on Screenplays. Because adapting and original are obviously two entirely different beasts to tackle.

I was definitely like that too when Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature. I was worried that the award would have gone to Incredibles 2 (which I thought was good, but an inferior sequel) or, even worse, Ralph Breaks the Internet. But it was so refreshing to have the Oscars acknowledge actual work, creativity, and talent for once.
One thing I despise about the Oscars is that they use awards (like Editing and Score) as an opportunity to make jokes and grow comedians’ egos, rather than an opportunity to appreciate the work of these vital creators, as they do for the acting categories. Utterly disgusting.
Just want to point out that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, an R-rated anime film, became the highest grossing film in 2020, beating the Christopher Nolan blockbuster Tenet. This makes it the first foreign animation to beat Hollywood at the box office, without massive marketing or big name celebrities attached to it, and it wasn’t even out in America until 2021. Granted, this happened during the height of the pandemic, but this just shows that you don’t need an award to get recognition and that the Academy is completely out of touch thinking that animation is for kids.
To be fair, Demon Slayer is considered an all ages series in Japan (though the second season being set in Yoshiwara did upset some of the few parents who hadn't been following the series themselves). They've even done McDonalds Happy Meals for it. That being said, the Academy is very much out of touch.
The western world needs to realize the potential of animation as method to tell stories. People are starting to wake up to that; mostly younger generations. Mugen Train’s success on top of Arcane being the top rated show and third highest-in-demand on Netflix in 2021… they’re stupid if they think it’s just “for kids.” Also, why are so many American adult animated shows competing for most disgusting art style?

Honestly, it makes me more excited for Sony's upcoming animated films that are aimed for adults just to prove the Oscars wrong. Then again, I know for a fact that even if those films get nominated, they'll still lose to whatever Disney's making.
It ticks me off to no end that animation is still relegated to it's own separate category. Say it with me folks, "ANIMATION IS NOT A GENRE, IT IS A MEDIUM."
To quote one of Schaffrillas's editors from his Ratatouille review: The next time I hear someone say "What's it like working in the animation *genre* ", I'm gonna punch that person
Ive always avoided the oscars BECAUSE of them snubbing animation. It tells me their views on film in general and its not for the artistry that ANY movie should be recognized for. Whether it was hand drawn, 3d drawn, filmed on print or filmed digitally. How did it make you feel? Does it leave you with anything? Does it inspire you? Does you remind you of good memories? Bad? Thats the beauty of any film making and refusing to acknowledge that just based on how its made does not lend any credit to their opinions. I do love seeing second hand the sharing of all those acceptance speeches that matter, and those should be the focus anyways to be honest. I do wonder if theyre trying to appeal to a hip audience while not really knowing whats appealing instead of focusing on what is important. Yknow. Films.
I mean, the Oscar’s never cared about films. It was always pretentious twats trying to look smart by giving trophies to movies they think might be good despite probably not ever watching them.
What’s craziest to me about the actresses for the live action disney princess movies making fun of animation is that they literally would not have roles without those animated films?? Like Ariel nor Jasmine would not be NEARLY as iconic without the animation. Just so much disrespect
I want to think they just read a script and they aren't that ignorant because it was absolutely idiotic that they consider animation a struggle for parents or something they are forced to watch with their kids.
I mean doesn't that kind of beg the questions of why even remake the movies. If everyone is just going to watch and remember the animated flims, and everyone will just forget about the live action remake. Like seriously how often do people talk about the remakes of Aladin , Lion King, Cinderella, Mulan, or Beauty and the Beast. Pretty much never, and if someone does bring it up. It's usually about how bad they are and how the original is way better.
I'd blame the scriptwriter and whoever chose the host selection. The former for being disrespectful to the medium, the latter for wanting to make a buck off the actress' recognisability and link to the live action trend. Mix them together and they make a particularly sour taste.
If the Oscar's were more honest about how it's 90% entertainment and them being only about popularity rather than giving actually talented people recognition then I'd honestly have no problem but because that wouldn't stroke the actor's egos enough they pretend that they're some super prestigious thing and give deserving awards every now and then whenever it'll make them look good
It’s a weird thing because the Oscars don’t seem to go to the most popular films of the year. At the same time though, they completely leave out some of the most critically claimed and respected films as well. It’s this weird middle ground with no rhyme or reason and it’s weird.
@@UltimateTS64 tf you talking about lmao, do you really think It Takes Two was more popular than... Every other game at the time? Game Awards at least *tries* to properly judge masterpieces and game quality, it's just that sometimes they focus too much on activism rather than actual quality, but generally their picks make sense. The Last Of Us Part 2 may have been terrible to play, because who the fuck wants to play people that terrible, but it is Art. Definitely worse than others.
@@zachrabaznaz7687 some picks definitely don't make sense tho, like Luigi's Mansion 3 had no business winning family game of the year in 2019 over Smash Ultimate. But it's mostly in other categories where you can't take them too seriously, sure game of the year is usually a fair pick, but in some of the side categories, I'm just like huh?
My favorite moment, as an italian, is Roberto Benigni winning best actor: jumping over seats, almost falling on steven spielberg, saying "my parents gave me the gift of poverty" and those shallow assholes in the academy bursting out laughing as the genuinely did not get that wasn't a joke.
Benigni is a comedy actor, we all know that he can never be serious and dramatic. That's why La Vita è Bella is a completely comedic film and not an heart wrenching story where most of the comedy is the jokes a man makes to desperately try to shield his son from one of the worst horrors in History.
Dude didn't even mention Chris Rock getting slapped and still put together a great video about this disaster of a show. Huge respect for you, Schaffrillas!
I mean, maybe they're on to something. Perhaps A Scanner Darkly and Mad God could be the next big hit kid's films if we only let them reach the intended audience they were apparently meant for. Kids have already seen so many 'be yourself' and 'be kind to one another' stories, now they can learn about morals like surveillance states and the horrors of drug addiction, or discover where their personal line is when it comes to body horror! Plus it would make future therapy sessions way more interesting, so truly a win-win for everyone.
The fact that the animated feature category was introduced by three of the LIVE ACTION princesses makes that ridiculous introduction even more enraging. I’m so glad that a lot of people are on the same page about the Oscars absolutely being disrespectful to the animation category, though. There are actually people who think that animated media is for children and I literally can’t STAND it lmfao they really try to make you feel bad for liking cartoons 💀
I wonder if it's an issue of vanity. Those actors want to see THEMSELVES on the silver screen, not just their characters. Then you have people like Mark Hamill who LOVES that people don't see him on the screen, they see the Joker. He IS the Joker in many people's eyes and he loves that.
@@ThePreciseClimber And hearing his voice could also make me think of Luke Skywalker or Fire Lord Ozai. He's had some of the most iconic voices of the past 50 years.
I still think The Mitchells vs The Machines deserved the Oscar for Best Animated Feature over Encanto. Now I don't think Encanto is bad, it's a good movie, but TMVTM has a lot more passion put in it, both style and story wise. It came from a group of people who love animation and tried to push the medium, and creating a unique, fun experience with a very heartfelt story that is based on real life experiences. I feel like the Oscars don't understand that it's not about popularity, or that it caters to a one, specific audience. Animation specifically, is a medium that made for everyone period. It should be respected as an art form, just like film.
Ahhh I think it's overhyped. Now I don't think MVTM is bad but, I remember hearing how amazing the movie was from so many people I put it on and I enjoyed it fine enough but, I expected alot more as for Encanto I saw it before it blew up in popularity mainly which was when it got released on disney plus an ya I thought it was fine and good but, then I watched it a few more times and it only got better and better with each viewing for me but MVTM I did try watching it again and ya no it's about as good as I remember it soild but, overal in my opnion not worth the hype
I'm honestly surprised that, even if it didn't win, Mitchells vs The Machines got nominated. Like Spiderverse, it has a distinct style to it and even premiered on Netflix.
As much as I loved Spiderverse, I believe it only won because it’s Spider-man. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely deserved that win, but when you know that win had nothing to do with what actually made it great, it just feels so soulless.
I HATE that they cut riz's award out. as a Pakistani his film means SO MUCH to me. if they'd televise it, it would only gain more views and traction online. the guy deserves the world
Thank you for leaving Will Smith out of this. That's been everywhere on social media so it's nice to finally see attention on the actual Oscars themselves and not what everyone won't shut up about
I struggle to find the Oscars important in the first place despite the fact that yes, they still are prestigious, and Schaffrillas was completely correct about the magic of a moment gone right. Then I'm asked to care about celebrity drama involving millionaires and which is ableist, racist, and misogynistic? I just don't have the energy for that. I can agree that those three things are very bad and hurt a lot of people. I do care about those issues. But I don't care about millionaires. The Academy's disregard for animation pretty much explains why animated movies are snubbed for a best picture nomination 99% of the time. If the Academy had more sense, more animated films like Akira, Grave of The Fireflies, Spirited Away, The Lion King, WALL-E, Into The Spiderverse, Shrek, Shrek 2, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Demon Slayer, etc would've gotten the best picture nomination they deserved.

My favorite part of the Oscars is when they get to the animation category and go "omg 😍 kids kids kids, haha kids, sucks to be you parents haha, kids kids kids-" Like in all seriousness, every other major outlet of animation recognizes it so thoroughly, like Japan treats animation as another very important medium of storytelling that deserves recognition, and over in Hollywood they're still stuck in the decades old mindset that animation will always be for dumb little kids and Disney's pony show. It's disappointing and frustrating.
Meanwhile even in the u.s. we just got widely renowned and beloved "adult" animated shows that have no comparison like Invcincible & Arcane. Yeah, we have had an endless list of shows like the Simpsons and Southpark in varying quality for "adult animation" but now the medium is diversifying so much it is amazing.
When I told a friend who doesn't watch or care about the Oscars that they were cutting out most of the crafts categories and all of the shorts categories, even she was outraged by that knowledge. As a movie buff I felt really pandered to the entire ceremony, if it wasn't for that slap we would have been talking about how the ceremony was horrible.
No, if it wasn’t for that, nobody would ever talk about oscars LOL. I didn't even know oscar was happening until it went viral for all the wrong reasons.
my mom and i were fuming during the animation section. i literally turned and said to her “how fucking dare they” when the academy tried to insinuate that animation is just for kids. beyond insulting and infuriating.
I remember they used to make this beautiful montages for presenting some categories like screenplay (with the actual script on top of the movie) or editing (with a scene shown fully uncut) and makeup and costume design (where they'd show the sketches and making of them) and others, and they were great! Really felt like a celebration and understanding of the effort and importance of each craft. I would like to see those come back. Sure they took airing time but were actually important, unlike the "funny" sketches.
There's a reason Lotr fans watch the behind the scenes footage even though it's just as long as one of the actual films. People LIKE seeing behind the scenes, they like seeing the creative process and who made the films they love. It's part of being a fan of film! But sure, instead let's throw some random celebrity on stage and put them in a dumb costume doing unfunny jokes. That's probably what people want to tune into.
I remember they once had models on the stage wearing each movies' nominated costumes... And the clips you mention for the best screenplay categories were so good!

It’s part of why can never take The Game Awards as the “Oscars for video games” they want to be. They don’t even have a Best Game Design award, the thing that makes a game a game. I give more credence to the DICE or Game Developers Choice awards.

The "animation is just for kids" comment is made even worse by the fact that it was said by three actresses who portrayed the *live-action* versions of Disney Princesses. Like wow, Oscars (and Disney), twist the knife why don't you. 🙄😑
They always say "Fuck it!" and say 'animation is for kids' even though that's practically beating a dead horse. As the author of Narnia said: "A story enjoyed by children is a bad story. But a good story can be enjoyed by both children and adults".
What really pisses me off is how Disney is the one doing this. *Disney* The biggest company on the animation industry is poorly representing animation to the general public.
The "lol nobody saw the nominees this year" joke was funny the first time you watch the Oscars and genuinely only heard of a few of the films. But after watching for 8 years, not only is it a disrespectful joke to your nominees, but holy hell, they tell it EVERY DAMN YEAR! I chose to not watch this year because they cut some of the awards from the ceremony and if Will Smith didn't start a giant shit show, I would've totally forgot it came on. It's become so empty and meaningless

I'm so glad she was able to make that speech in front of so many people, it makes me so happy that people were able to hear what she said and be moved and comforted by it. I truly owe her the world for those words.
Amy Schumer: Animation is for kids. Beauty and the Beast 1991: Nominated for Best Picture. Won best Original Score. Nominated for best original song. Three times!! Won best original song. Nominated for Best Sound.
It wasn't Amy Schumer. Instead it was Jasmine, Ariel and Cinderella from the live-action Disney remakes (I would put the actors names but I honestly don't care). I'm shocked that no one has pointed out how one of the biggest titans in animated history, not only decided to make hollow remakes of their beloved movies, but then have the stars of those remakes trash all over the medium those movies originated from. Like if it weren't for animation, you guys wouldn't be there in the first place.
It feels like different members of the Academy with a legit respect for animation as a film medium ran that Oscars ceremony when Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture and Sound and won Best Score and Best Original Song.
The Oscars are nothing but a slap in the face to truly deserving film makers and art...and the irony that they banned an actor who played an Oscar from The Oscars. I'm glad the Best Animated Feature presentation got the uproar response that it did. Animation isn't just for kids. Walt Disney created Disneyland for the young and the young at heart...well, the same can be said about animation. I mean, look at Disney's Black Cauldron and Hunchback of Notre Dame, just take a good look at those two movies and tell me that movie is "just for kids". Same for DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt...is that a kids movie? Yeah, that's what I thought..it's for everyone! It's something both kids and adults can understand what's happening and the moral. They're the same people who wouldn't want to watch a Nicktoon like Avatar the Last Airbender because to them at first glance, it's a "kids show" despite it bringing up not so kid-friendly topics. Never judge a book by its cover. There is nothing wrong with an adult watching an animated show or movie and getting deep into thought as to what it portrays
Nothing wrong with animation being for kids lol, not all of it obviously, moreso kids' stuff being for kids. Please don't alienate the next generation from great animation. Rather something being made for children doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it or that it has no artistic value.
Honestly, what determines "being made for kids" is a bit in flux right now. For so long, we've patronized our kids by assuming they're stupid and deciding that shows or movies that talk about serious subjects are "not for kids." Look, I'm all for saying that animation is a medium not just relegated to kids entertainment, but we also need to be careful about saying certain films are or are not for kids. Avatar and Prince of Egypt tackle serious subjects, but they do so in a way that is respectful of how kids think and process information. It opens the door to more serious conversations we should be having with our kids and does so in a visual medium to help begin understanding what these ideas mean. However, most parents don't want to have conversations with their kids at all, so, here we are. Animation is a medium we should be recognizing more for kids and adults. But more importantly, we need to see kids as capable of learning so much so that we can continue using media to make our messages to kids and adults more significant.
Yeah, Disney should not try to bury animation now! 5 years in the future, I am going to start a big push for 20th Century Animation to make animated films for adults (besides the movies they already have for The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers) because I have already concocted a few good ideas for such a unique market following the success of Sausage Party.
I highly doubt they watch the movies for best animated film, hence why it goes to Disney every year (except Spiderverse) and why the Lego Movie didn't get it, because Disney is Disney. It's more for political value than anything. Even the movie "A Silent Voice" an anime movie got passed over for "Boss Baby" is when they lost my respect.
They didn't let an anime film which treats mental health issues with respect win, but an unintentionally horrifying animated film surrounding infants. WTF?!
We are in the year 2022, these "Awards" became just another reality show so stupid people will watch it for "Fun". We should cancel these type of shows and put online polls instead.
This year’s ceremony really really sucked, but watching Jane Campion finally win Best Director, after so many years of stellar work and breaking so many barriers, was truly satisfying. I would say the same about Drive My Car’s win, but of course they had the audacity of disrespecting and interrupting Hamaguchi’s speech.
That pissed me off to no end! He was clearly pausing to think more and almost got played off THREE times! Also, can we acknowledge that “Drive My Car” was never going to win Best Picture this year because 1) it was already going to (deservedly so) win Best International Feature Film and 2) they already gave it to “Parasite” so it’s not going to *another* film not in English this decade. Argh! Also, “The Worst Person in the World” should’ve had the Best Picture slot than “Don’t Look Up” had. As much as I admire the message of the movie, that movie was a waste of Grade-A talent and good satirical material, but it should’ve gone to another movie. But God forbid we have *two* movies NOT in English nominated for Best Picture! Double argh!
I was expecting you to make a last second joke about the slappening, and then you didn’t. And I must say, it really did Subvert My Expectations. I declare this video a Subversive Masterpiece. Also as an aspiring filmmaker, the oscars does a fantastic job at both killing any motivation I have to continue my work, and making me hopeful for the future of the medium.
I'd argue that it's *exactly* why you should keep at your work. To prove them wrong, and to give that hope for the medium. Plus, the Academy is terrible anyways, so fuck them and their opinion. 😛
"Animation is a genre" Ah yes, because Junji Ito animation's that features gore, blood, gruesome visuals, and dark, complex meanings, are definitely in the same genre as Spongebob.
I know this probably sounds crazy, but as a society should make our own award shows, have them be completely transparent with who is on the board, fund them through crowd funding and actually recognize the best movies of the year.

Hell, video game awards respect voice actors performances and actually care about them, even more than the Oscars and some of the anime community (yes I said it, dub actors are so underrated and need respect just as much as Japanese VAs).

Like, they’re just reading from a script? If you want to know more reasons why the Oscars have a huge bias hatred to animation, Beauty and the Beast from 1992 is one of the main reasons. Turns out from a tweet from Variety, it turns out the Academy were concerned that a animated movie got nominated for Best Picture and that there's a potential it could win Best Picture so they wanted to make the "Best animated feature" category to prevent it from happening, and Chicken Run convinced them to do so (Heck back than, some critics claimed it was "Best Picture" nomination material).
In other words...

The fact that Alfred Hitchcock got NO Oscars, and Stanley Kubrick only won ONE Oscar for their many masterpieces says it all. (For those who don't know, they're two of the greatest filmmakers of ALL TIME.)
Alfred Hitchcock did get his only Best Picture Oscar for Rebecca. If he could have gotten another one, it would be for Vertigo.
And someone like Jared Leto gets best everything every year
Alfred Hitchcock didn't win anything.

Yeah, what Regina Hall did was pretty cringe. If a male host did that to an actress, they would cancel him.

We as a people should join to raise money to Buy Disney as a whole, then fire all executives and file a restraining order to prevent their return, then sell everything that was bought.
As animation: Disney really does a nice job showing emotion and connection
As a company: they are a soul sucking money grubbing company
I feel bad because I can tell that a lot of people put a lot of hard work in their projects but get hate because of where they come from.

Thank god for the Dead Meat channel🙏

Live action movies are just a way for Disney to earn more money without trying.
To be fair, it’s not like they wrote their own speeches. It’s not necessarily their personal thoughts and it’s definitely not their fault
I'd blame the scriptwriter and whoever chose the host selection. The former for being disrespectful to the medium, the latter for wanting to make a buck off the actress' recognisability and link to the live action trend. Mix them together and they make a particularly sour taste.
If the Oscar's were more honest about how it's 90% entertainment and them being only about popularity rather than giving actually talented people recognition then I'd honestly have no problem but because that wouldn't stroke the actor's egos enough they pretend that they're some super prestigious thing and give deserving awards every now and then whenever it'll make them look good
If they were honest, Disney would get less Oscars.
That's all awards shows, the Game Awards is the same way, but I mostly watch it for announcements and reveal trailers
My favorite moment, as an italian, is Roberto Benigni winning best actor: jumping over seats, almost falling on steven spielberg, saying "my parents gave me the gift of poverty" and those shallow assholes in the academy bursting out laughing as the genuinely did not get that wasn't a joke.
The best moment in Oscars history 😢. With the beautiful music playing in the background ... so incredible.
Benigni is a comedy actor, we all know that he can never be serious and dramatic.
That's why La Vita è Bella is a completely comedic film and not an heart wrenching story where most of the comedy is the jokes a man makes to desperately try to shield his son from one of the worst horrors in History.

Flee, Isle of Dogs, Persepolis, Anomalisa: *"AHEM"*
yeah, Rango won the award too, then gun violence, swearing and murder is completely fine for kids
Persepolis is a masterpiece!
Secret of Kells too! And Legend of the Gaurdians: Owls of Gahoole!
I hate it when people say that animation is just for kids. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Like in all seriousness, every other major outlet of animation recognizes it so thoroughly, like Japan treats animation as another very important medium of storytelling that deserves recognition, and over in Hollywood they're still stuck in the decades old mindset that animation will always be for dumb little kids and Disney's pony show. It's disappointing and frustrating.
