There was a time the Academy recognised the animated movies in other categories. Now they're all stuck with just one award, even though these films have done far better with critics and fans.
ehhh. a silent voice was fantastic, but it realistically never stood a chance due to the nature of its release. the lego batman movie, however, was a mainstream hollywood movie that everyone saw and loved and that somehow also missed out in the same year??? that's truly the most egregious snub. honestly if you replaced the boss baby and ferdinand with a silent voice and lego batman you'd have a peak lineup.
The only nom I actually cared about was Godzilla Minus One because of how it's such a milestone for not just the franchise but for the history of Japanese special effects films Also you going wild over the original score noms had me rolling
@thomasffrench3639 I haven't. I was more so referring to the vfx nomination being of significance, especially since Japanese sfx films have always been looked down upon in America
Godzilla Minus One definitely should've been nominated for more Oscar's than just the visual effects, the acting, score, sound design were all amazing in their own right
Even in the Annie Awards (Academy Awards for Animation) Wish didn't got a SINGLE nomination but Nimona got plenty of nominations in different categories.
I think the Hollywood elitists who vote for the Oscars are mad that animators making “kids films” make better movies than them with their “adult dramas”. It’s the only reason I can think of why the Masterpiece that was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got nominated for ONLY ONE
There have only been three animated movies that have been nominated for Best Picture: Beauty and the Beast, Up, and Toy Story 3. In that same time period they actually did recognise animated movies outside of Best Animated, usually for the music. Also, in the same Oscars the live-action Disney princesses made that speech belittling these "kids movies", Flee, an adult documentary was nommed for Best Animated.
Meh, the first Spiderverse movie was better. I genuinely do not consider ATSV a “masterpiece”. I’m way more pissed that Joe Hisaishi wasn’t nominated for best score.
Especially with last year having Across the Spiderverse and Boy and the Heron, 2 of the most MATURE AND MASTERFUL ANIMATED FILMS IN RECENT YEARS got NOTHING outside of its designated category is deplorable
🎵I wish that I could be like the cool kids, 'cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in, I wish that I could be like the could kids, like the cool kids🎵
The one thing from this year that they get right is Godzilla Minus One getting an award for best visuals; since even on the reported budget of $15 million, with the director saying that the movie was less than the reported cost, so around the $10-$12 million, still looks exponentially better than what hollywood has been doing for the last few years.
“What was the makeup in Oppenheimer?” I take that as a compliment to the team that the old age makeup looked so good that you didn’t even clock it as makeup.
You know what the Oscars should do if they want my attention? Right before they give the Best Picture award, they should have an orchestra play a medley of themes from all the Best Picture nominees like the Game Awards does. That’s basically the only thing the Game Awards consistently does well, so it wouldn’t hurt the Oscars to rip them off.
Spiderverse deserved Best Picture, Screenplay, VFX, Score, etc. The Academy snubbing it by not including it in its nominations is unforgivable. It's like they flat-out ignored and disrespected Guillermo Del Torro in his speech last year when he said Animation is a medium and not a genre. It would have to take a worldwide revolution and protest to remind the Academy to take back their mistake and acknowledge that Animation is Art and should be celebrated.
Maybe for Best VFX, but I don’t know about Best Picture or Score (although I don’t think John Williams should’ve been nominated, either). But, then again, if the Oscars is going to give nominations to films like “Napoleon” and “Indiana Jones: The Dial Of Destiny”, and nominate “Barbie” for Best Picture (not saying that it’s a bad film since I haven’t seen it yet, but it doesn’t quite fit the mold of an “Oscar-worthy film”), then it wouldn’t hurt to also nominate “Across The Spider-Verse” and “The Boy And The Heron” for Best Picture. Both of these films fit the mold of an “Oscar-worthy” Best Picture nomination better than a film like “Barbie” does due to the drama and mature themes in those films, in my opinion. I think Joe Hisaishi should’ve been nominated for Best Original Score, in my opinion.
So two things: A) I would probably have been much more upset by Margot Robbie being snubbed if this wasn't so clearly Lily Gladstone's year to win it B) I laughed so fucking hard at your reaction when they announced the soundtrack nominations, it's great getting to see that Oscar rage in other people
On the one hand, I absolutely love all the attention Oppenheimer is getting, as it absolutely deserves it. On the other, HOW IN THE WORLD DID ACROSS THE SPIDER VERSE NOT EVEN GET NOMINATED FOR BEST ORIGINAL SCORE?
@@crazyfire9470 Let me put it this way. Across the Spider Verse WAS my favorite soundtrack of 2023, no contest. It's the only one that I actively listened to outside of the movie.

My Dad went to go see Napoleon without me, but when he was initially inviting me to go watch it, for whatever reason he accidentally referred to the movie as "Ceasar" From now on I will only refer to the movie as Ceasar lmaooo
Nah it didn’t get it because it butchered the original text and the Academy knows it. Personally so hate the film, but obviously many people think it’s fantastic. But to get nominated for best adaption you have to actually adapt the text well.
I’d disagree about there being no original music in Dial of Destiny, as Helena’s theme is an amazing new work by John. That said, although I’m happy with the nom, it should have been alongside of or replaced by Across the Spider-Verse, which is undoubtedly better than Dial of Destiny’s score.
That shit was so ass bro. Me and my family immediately got home and watched Crystal Skull since my cousin kept saying that at least it wasn’t as bad as that. Turns out it was worse.
@@tallerwarrior1256Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is much worse. Maybe up until the point where it's revealed that Mutt is Indiana's son you could argue it's better, but afterwards it's terrible. Dial of Destiny is just mid through and through.
@@jd1800 Dial had such a convoluted and idiotic story, none of the main characters and antagonists were interesting or compelling, and even on the technical side it failed miserably. Crystal Skull on the other hand has a fairly well constructed story that celebrates the Indiana Jones legacy, most of the characters are all fairly compelling or at least entertaining, and the technical aspects are all good except for the CGI. Crystal Skull just got a lot of flack because of the fact that it was succeeding one of the greatest cinematic trilogies and didn’t reach the standard of any of the past three movies. The reason why many people think Dial is mid is because the movie literally doesn’t do anything. None of the characters grow and it follows the cliche trope of out of touch old man needing to move on and let go of the past (literally). There’s no substance, style, or entertainment. The only saving Grace Dial has are the first 15-20 minutes of the movie with young Indy at the end of the war, that’s it.
@@tallerwarrior1256 Dial of Destiny's antagonist isn't iconic or anything, but he was easily more compelling than Spalko, probably because it was Mads Mikkelsen. None of the characters, as cliché as they were, were worse than Mac or Willie from Temple of Doom. The movie never had anything as cringeworthy as the refrigerator nuke scene, or Mutt catching up to a speeding vehicle by swinging from vine to vine with an army of monkeys. It didn't have the awful color grading Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had up until 2021 that made everything look ugly as sin. Also, this is just personal preference, but the antikythera mechanism is a much better choice of artifact than a crystal skull.
Across the SpiderVerse is my 2nd favorite film of all time next to Prince of Egypt. The fact it got nominated for nothing but animated feature kinda presses my buttons.
Sorry Schaff, but since John Williams is very very old and scored Jurassic Park the Academy thinks he needs to be nominated every year he is alive, even for re-used music, Oppenheimer's a lock though so it don't matter. Also I'm putting a tax on everyone currently commenting "Animation is Cinema" to watch Blue Eye Samurai before you do that, cause I'm not confident you ain't just all talking about Trolls 3.
Maybe they're doing this to try and atone for them not nominating his score for Jurassic Park (I mean he still got nominated and won for Schindler's List the same year, but the point still stands )
I don’t know of a single person that thinks “Trolls 3” should be nominated for Best Animated Feature, let alone any Oscar nomination. Although, I have heard people say the Mario movie should’ve been nominated for Best Animated Feature, which I don’t agree with all.
John Williams score was amazing in dial of destiny, I loved it when the people actually in charge of score said “it’s John Williams time” and then they used John Williams old tunes all over the poace
Between the dark crystal and spiderverse Daniel Pemberton has been in my top 5 artists for YEARS and definitely deserved to at least be nominated. The intro and Start A Band are so iconic already and even less important tracks like Guggenheim Assemble have so so much thought put into them
It pisses me off so much that an incredible film like Spider-Verse got nominated for less Oscars than the mediocre Napoleon. And it pisses me off even more that Spider-Verse and Indiana Jones 5 have the same amount of nominations!!!!

i was just thankful that wish and mario didn’t get the obligatory big studio animated nomination and that the little mermaid remake didn’t get any songs through. also that barbie got costume design and production design noms, i figured they were givens but it’s still nice given how much practicality was used. still sad to see how much animation has to struggle to get recognized outside of its specific category though :(
hey didn’t the Oscars implement that rule after Rise of Skywalker that a score had to be 60% original? how did Dial of Destiny’s score slip under that radar in spite of being the most forgettable John Williams score to date?

Edit: I understand that just because it has the most doesn’t make it the best. But it’s still REALLY impressive and (in my opinion) looks way better than some of the other movies. If you’ve seen the movie you’d know
Most and best are not the same thing. I'm not saying it shouldn't have been nominated, but the fact that it had the most makeup and prosthetics out of any movie shouldn't be the deciding factor.
it's BEST makeup and hairstyling, not MOST. learn the difference
Following that logic, Cats should have been nominated for Best Special Effects

Once again, animated films have been snubbed in all but one category. Daniel Pemberton's phenomenal score deserves so much more praise and recognition. At least Nimona was rightfully nominated for Best Animated Feature instead of Wish.
You got that right.
That score is phenomenal!! It's absolutely criminal how it wasn't nominated!!
Wish is overrated, meanwhile spiderverse is underrated I wish more people appreciated it more than wish and elemental
Not enough people are talking about Joe Hisaishi's score for The boy and the heron. It should've earned his first nomination as well.
There was a time the Academy recognised the animated movies in other categories. Now they're all stuck with just one award, even though these films have done far better with critics and fans.

I think the Hollywood elitists who vote for the Oscars are mad that animators making “kids films” make better movies than them with their “adult dramas”. It’s the only reason I can think of why the Masterpiece that was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got nominated for ONLY ONE
Yeah.
Animation is cinema. It pisses me off that the academy refuses to recognize its impact
Especially with last year having Across the Spiderverse and Boy and the Heron, 2 of the most MATURE AND MASTERFUL ANIMATED FILMS IN RECENT YEARS got NOTHING outside of its designated category is deplorable

The one thing from this year that they get right is Godzilla Minus One getting an award for best visuals; since even on the reported budget of $15 million, with the director saying that the movie was less than the reported cost, so around the $10-$12 million, still looks exponentially better than what hollywood has been doing for the last few years.
Yes
“What was the makeup in Oppenheimer?”
I take that as a compliment to the team that the old age makeup looked so good that you didn’t even clock it as makeup.
I think Schaf went through all stages of grief because of Spider-Verse not being nominated, which I think we all did ngl 😂
That and flute guy
Spiderverse deserved Best Picture, Screenplay, VFX, Score, etc. The Academy snubbing it by not including it in its nominations is unforgivable. It's like they flat-out ignored and disrespected Guillermo Del Torro in his speech last year when he said Animation is a medium and not a genre. It would have to take a worldwide revolution and protest to remind the Academy to take back their mistake and acknowledge that Animation is Art and should be celebrated.
Minus One deserves VFX award, absolutely put Hollywood to shame on a 15 million dollar budget.
Best Picture or Screenplay...... nah
it's a good movie but chill out, the competition is very strong. How is Spiderverse's score better than Oppenheimer's or Poor Things's
@@lultimodeilancelot3990But Indiana Jones deserves it more? Really?
Spiderverse's OST is too good for this schlock.
I’d like to think that any time Schaff gets frustrated about anything in his everyday life he just breaks into that Saul Goodman monologue

A) I would probably have been much more upset by Margot Robbie being snubbed if this wasn't so clearly Lily Gladstone's year to win it
B) I laughed so fucking hard at your reaction when they announced the soundtrack nominations, it's great getting to see that Oscar rage in other people

No Killers of the Flower Moon for screenplay genuinely is insane. Totally agree with you
Nah it didn’t get it because it butchered the original text and the Academy knows it. Personally so hate the film, but obviously many people think it’s fantastic. But to get nominated for best adaption you have to actually adapt the text well.
@TheParchedFilms i dont know much about the source material so ill take your word for it. Fair enough i suppose
Man, you can feel the absolute HATRED Schaff has for Dial of Destiny.
I thought the movie was okay, but it must be absolutely EGREGIOUS in his eyes.
That shit was so ass bro. Me and my family immediately got home and watched Crystal Skull since my cousin kept saying that at least it wasn’t as bad as that. Turns out it was worse.
As a non fan of Indiana Jones, it was boring. I forgot it even existed until now.
@@tallerwarrior1256Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is much worse. Maybe up until the point where it's revealed that Mutt is Indiana's son you could argue it's better, but afterwards it's terrible. Dial of Destiny is just mid through and through.
@@jd1800
Dial had such a convoluted and idiotic story, none of the main characters and antagonists were interesting or compelling, and even on the technical side it failed miserably.
You gotta watch more movies then. SpiderVerse is good, but Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and The Holdovers are all better
Still should of gotten nominated for best score instead of Indiana Jones
