Here's an observation from an old guy. That nude beach sketch where they keep saying 'penis'? The joke behind it is that it had just recently become okay to use the word 'penis' on TV so they were going to get as much mileage out of it as possible.

The “SNL got political” take is on par with the “I liked Rage Against the Machine before they got political” take.
True
The people that tend to repeat that are ironically letting their mask slip...... it's not that it got "political", it's that the show is making a joke out of an ideology they've tied their entire sense of self to. Fanaticism leads to not being able to take a joke about what they're being fanatics over

You know as someone from Europe who only knew SNL at its worst this is actually fascinating. I never realised how many A-class Hollywood stars started their careers on that show, let alone how many B-class actors even had a career at all simply because they could put it in their resume.

My favorite SNL sketch was one from when Norm Macdonald was hosting. It's crazy how many huge staple actors and comedians come out of SNL.
It's kind of a comedy institution
It really is a jumpstart for a comedy career. If you can last a few season and make an impact, you can make something out of it. That’s why a lot of the current cast members have been in movies or have done standup since joining.
Who?
@@mewesquirrel6720 Eddie Murphy, its biggest star, and then others like Andy Sandberg, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Amy Phoeler, Chris Rock, Bill Murray, RDJ.....list goes on
@@mewesquirrel6720 Chevy Chase Jim Belushi Dan Akroyd Bill Murray Eddie Murphy Julia Louis Dreyfus Phil Hartman Mike Meyers Chris Farley Chris Rock Adam Sandler Will Ferrell Tina Fey Amy Pohler Andy Samberg Bill Hader
bill hader wasn't mentioned a lot in this video, and I just wanna point out something I've noticed about his comedic style that sets him apart. and I think this is why a lot of people consider him to be one of the best cast members of the last fifteen or so years.
his impressions are transformative. most SNL impressions of movie characters, celebrities, etc, are just filler lines up until they Say The Funny Catchphrase. and most of these sketches fall flat (a lot of celebrity jeopardy sketches do this). but when Bill does his take on an existing character, he adapts the character to something like a new setting or time period, and transforms what could be a throwaway skit into something memorable.
and sure, he's very repetitive. but he doesn't do the EXACT same thing in every sketch like some SNL actors do. with the exception of specific characters he plays, such as Stefan, he doesn't really have a single trait that he's remembered for. sometimes he's really loud and facially expressive, aggressive, homoerotic, even homosexual, but sometimes he doesn't say a single word, and he's probably funny regardless of what he's doing. he's adaptable. he isn't just a loud funny man, he adapts to what the skit/character needs him to do. and that's still apparent today, as he has found success in the show Barry, among other projects.
When I'm down, I like to go back to sketches where Hader plays off of Armisen. Those two together made magic on screen.

I also feel like the "SNL was funnier in my day" comes from how TV used to be watched. When I was a teenager I would stay up late and watch with my sisters. On more then one occasion we wouldn't laugh during the episode but then talk about the skit so much that it became funnier in hindsight because it became an inside joke with my sisters. Also there was less content out in the world so it was more likely my friends where watching SNL. If I missed that weeks episodes, I couldn't always find them on TH-cam, I would just be out of the joke that week. My point is SNL was funnier when my friends and family watched SNL because sharing a joke with someone is funnier than laughing and a screen alone in your bedroom.
Not even close. It has to do with talent and writing. SNL has always had ups and downs. Its first few years were great. In the 80s, the show sucked for awhile after numerous big names moved on. It had a resurgence in the 90s, went downhill in the early 2000s, got better in the mid 2000s, and ever since 2013 or so has went from mediocre to borderline unwatchable. The new cast sucks and the writing is so cringey and politically charged....and very partisan.
SNLs comedy used to appeal to everyone. Now, it only apoeals to a select people.
Geeze, The comments here are clearly from the youth who have no idea! I agree and have the same kinds of memories, we would say the lines for years sometimes and I still quote them now!
@Juliana __ Some people want to believe everything has somehow gotten "political now" and that's why it's bad. Truth is everything has always been political. The purpose of SNL is to kinda throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. You remember the good stuff and forget the rest.
They have a week to write and practice brand new sketches with hosts that may or may not even be actors. Then you have to account for set design/costumes/etc. They are doing this on hard mode for sure, and I respect the entire production for that. Of course there will be bad sketches. Oh yeah, and Vanessa Bayer was criminally underrated for sure.
Someone gets it^^^
That pretty much sums it up.

The show sucks ...Who are we kidding ?
For the past decade , “SNL” has attempted to make up for the god-awful writing by bringing in celebrities to play recurring “characters” . But even THIS strategy has failed .
What’s so funny about seeing Jim Carrey doing an impression of Jim Carrey doing Joe Biden ?
What’s so funny about seeing Alec Baldwin doing an impression of Alec Baldwin doing Donald Trump ?
I’m old enough to remember when SNL used to cast literal sketch comedians in their sketches !
Seriously though , how many times must we be subjected to a sketch where they just tell the same joke OVER AND OVER again and call that a full sketch ?
The same joke is repeated until the sketch ends ...
Another tactic of the god- awful writers is to pack each sketch with the most amount of jokes possible , which oftentimes , does not allow for the satisfaction of waiting for that one perfectly timed joke or punchline .
And the present cast members suffer from some of the worst comedic timing during their sketches .
And don’t get me started on the incessant awkward pauses and clear signs the celebrity guest stars are reading cue cards.
And these SNL writers try SO HARD to force sketches about current events ...ugh 🤢
These writers need reminding that the best and most iconic SNL sketches of all time , were ones which were just funny , without any relation to what’s going on in the world .
People will remember the great sketches with good writing and good acting far longer than a bad sketch that was relevant at the time and had a celebrity in it , for the sake of having a celebrity in it.
SNL sucks !
@@angelozachos8777 I disagree with the last bit, the sketches with Tina Fey as Sarah Palin are beloved by people on both sides of the political spectrum. Again, OP is right, they throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, so maybe most of their sketches on current events are bullshit, but once in a while they produce a real gem

Just a quick note on Charles Rocket and why NBC tried to make him the next big star of SNL.
Rocket worked as a serious news anchor for a few NBC stations across the country, and had produced a series of comedic short films where he played a reporter who asked random people on the street weird questions (similar to Billy Eichner’s bit 40 years later). These shorts were popular in the underground comedy scene of the late 1970s, and his experience as an anchor made hiring him to do Weekend Update seem like a perfect fit.
After he got the gig, it went to his head. He felt that he had made it just be being on SNL, and didn’t need to try as hard. Hell, most of the people hired for season 5 thought the same thing as Rocket. He immediately began feuding with Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo because they dared to actually try and put effort into their sketches.
Rocket was fired after dropping the f-bomb on live television, along with everyone else except Murphy and Piscopo.
This is the show that i've never actually seen but I feel like I know eveything about because of how much creators talk about it

Adam Driver’s hosting episodes have always been the greatest example of modern SNL. They’re actually pretty good IMO. Especially the social puppeteering bit.
And by the way, his analysis is spot on. I've heard SO many people say over the years say that SNL hasn't been good since the early years. Which is BS. Some of the skits from those early shows fell flat, just like they've done ever since. What kind of surprises me is this young man's detail, and the fact that he made this video about a subject that you'd THINK would have come from someone several years older. At first, I thought he was in his early 20s, but apparently he's closer to 30. And very well spoken. And kinda cute.
SNL has launched many great comedy careers, but none of the ones lately in the last few have been...anything. So I guess the proof is in the result. How them ratings?

Drew is so entertaining he can make me watch a deep dive on a show I've never seen
"It seems like something a teenager would come up with" describes Adam Sandler's humor style in a nutshell.
Which also explains why he “used” to be funny his humor is what a lot of teenagers like
As a teenager "take that back, take that back right now" we have taste... Well some of us... At least a select few...
I'm a teenager myself and i don't know a single friend of mine who likes Adam sandler's humor
@@alicio0059 Well, more like 2000-2010 teenage humor. Not teens today
I would say 6-11

drew: *talks about snl for 37 minutes*
me: *gets comfortable* yes
literally me!! never seen a full episode but here I am haha
Why do we do this
I’ve never *
The only episode I watched all the way thru was when bts was the musical guests NSNDN
Same, I'm not even American
The “X used to be good, but now it sucks” argument is always hilarious to me. It’s not the show that’s changed ….. it’s you. Whether you’re more mature or your sense of humor evolved, it’s not the show. TH-cam has me enjoying SNL more and more because it’s essentially a “Best of” compilation that you can access whenever you want. I agree, A LOT of SNL sketches fall flat from all eras due to writing, performances, hosts, topical humor, old political sketches, etc.
However, some are beyond timeless and still make me laugh. It’s just the nature of how the show is made and that it’s in constant flux with old talent leaving and new talent coming in.
rick miranis and dave thompson hosted SNL together is canadian culture and it’s important to note that they did it together to reference their very famous canadian characters from SCTV, a famous canadian sketch show airing at the same time
then parodied in the canadian children’s sketch show called “That’s So Weird”
That one Adam Driver skit where he’s an old man visiting his son’s school for career day kills me every time, like it actually has me in tears so like yeah modern SNL still has its hits
I was screaming. Best sketch. Instant Download.
For 82 years I've been an oil man...
HE'S MY FINAL REVENGE H.R.
Adam Driver is so underrated comedically!
The other Career Day skits are pretty funny, too. I especially like the one featuring Chance the Rapper.
This video literally explains. Basically why everyone says any type of media nowadays is worse than it used to be. Whether it be movies, TV shows or video games
No joke, I would actually love to hear 6 hours of drew talking about SNL
I would just like to say that Drew deserves every sub he has. Great job Danny
OMG YOU WATCH DREW AHHHH

Everytime I hear "Great job Danny" I now think of the Tac video that he did. XD

what kind of crossover is this lmao
I swear to god Drew, if you accurately predicted President Carlson, I will never forgive you.
‘Geez snl sucks nowadays, it’s too political. Like yeah I get it, “ha ha, President Carlson declared himself president for life” but is that all we have to talk about?’
There's rumors that he might be running. And it's terrifying, yeah.
@Sam Spragg do you have brain damage? Sorry, but I'm genuinely concerned
How dare you speak of future president Tucker Carlson in that manner
@@alexmsevans no, but Biden does 🤣🤣🤣
This video was super interesting! I love listening to your opinions and you debating. This video has a vibe between a school oral presentation and a podcast, but interesting. It's not too long, nor too short: it's simply perfect. I laughed, I reflected and I got lost in my thoughts at one point so I had to rewind-
My point being: you are someone who is passionate and knows how to share that passion and make it interesting, even to those who aren't really interested in the subject in the first place (which isn't my case here: I love SNL... And I liked Pete Davidson... 😅)
Thanks Drew! A cheers to another good video and to the future of your channel!
This is a really good and wholesome comment, should get more likes
im actually so glad you brought up toonsis the cat because me and my dad have had an inside joke since i was like seven where we say “toonsis look out” while someone is driving
“ Old thing good, new thing bad” is a thing that bothers me so much. How people blindly hate on new music, movies, shows, etc.
it’s the biggest boomer move a man can make
But how else will I let everyone know about my insecurity and on-going mid-life crisis?
What I hate most is how it can allow people to dodge valid criticism when a new installment of an existing property DOES suck.
Man, it'll be super weird when you find yourself doing it in 20-50 years...
I don't hate new music, there's just a lot of new popular genres of music that simply aren't for me. That being said, there's still plenty of new music I like. As for movies and TV shows, I like both old and new.
Makes sense that SNL is Drew's favorite show, his delivery is somewhere between Seth Myers and John Mulaney.
John mulaney is not very good

Thank you Drew, loved your analysis of the show. I am also a big fan (watched a lot growing up in the 90s and now catch 2-3 bits a week from TH-cam) and realize it's not a perfect show, and you really summarized it's appeal and drawbacks nicely. I also have people judge me for liking SNL, so I'm glad there are other ppl out there who still root for the comedians and enjoy the ideas and laugh at the jokes. Thanks for putting this video together!
The point when SNL stopped being funny is whenever the person saying that sentence graduated college.
I feel this is truly insightful actually. Most people tend to exist predominantly in their own world, and so as they grow older and perceive certain media differently, rather than examining their own change and self actualization, they try and attach an air of objectivity to their new found perspectives. It is part of growing up, but damn it can be frustrating to watch people become so steeped in it that they become inscrutable
Exactly. When people have to learn how to be funny, it defeats the purpose of comedy.
idk, one time my roommates and I realized we'd never seen any of SNL before, so we watched a couple episodes. We thought it seemed to be written pretty solely for the young gen X and elder millennial viewers. Of course there was the occasional funny bit, but overall it just seemed like it wasn't for us.
snl is lame mad t.v....its way more of a circle jerk of celebrity and less mean...its trying to be for teens and kinda a playpin for celebrities to act and feel comfortable while fulfilling their dream ..mad t.v. was for adults....went for the nutsack if you will and really did not shy away from tough topics
Lol that is so backwards. MadTV was based off of MadMAGAZINE which was edgy comedy for teens. I def preferred Mad as a teen and SNL as I got older, but neither now tbh. Does MadTV still exist even? Lol
I honestly really appreciate Drew’s constant SNL defense. There’s so much work that goes into the show and for a show that throws so much at the wall: Obviously not every episode will be good. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be funny
I agree completely! Nostalgia plays a HUGE role in how we remember past seasons. But this current cast of members is truly amazing. Im sad that some of them are almost definitely leaving. But I feel like the newer ones are also great and can guide the show. Its just that the sheer quantity of sketches they write per season is daunting. Not to mention that a lot of hosts just aren't comedic actors, so they can't help but suck the life out of some sketches.
It's honestly insane to make a whole show in a week, from writing to making sets, costume, practicing, etc, it's a miracle it works as often as it does already. A lot of cast membera have had panic attacks on the show because of how intense it is to make it.
same! i feel like people just jump on the bandwagon of hating it since it's what everyone else is doing but if they actually watched it i think they'd realize it's never as awful as they make it out to be lol
Look up how they treat their writers and you'll see why they suck nowadays. It's not worthless but definitely not as good as it was in its prime like the nineties and early aught's
@@CHIEF__ did you not watch this video?
I told my oldest son this "SNL isn't as funny as it used to be" he sent me this video. And after reviewing this video, you are correct. 💯 😂 it's still funny they just have a lot of hiccups and bad skits, like they always have. Nastalgia
*"Do you ever look at the crowds in old movies and wonder if they're dead yet?"*
My guy ghostwrites for Death Cab for Cutie lol
SNL is like Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is garbage, but the potential of finding something that isn't garbage is what makes life worth living.

I so badly want Ryan Gosling to host again. I was surprised when I found out that he only hosted twice because he is in many of my favorite sketches of all time like Papyrus, Santa Baby, Close Encounter, and some I'm probably forgetting.
I really enjoyed the surreal stuff with Kyle mooney and Beck Bennet. Such an odd addition to SNL, with intentional bad acting, production and deranged everyday scenarios, like if aliens or AI tried to recreate human scenarios
Me, an eastern european teenager who's seen two SNL sketches: Hmm, interesting
