Here's an observation from an old guy. That nude beach sketch where they keep saying 'penis'? The joke behind it is that it had just recently become okay to use the word 'penis' on TV so they were going to get as much mileage out of it as possible.
I also feel like the "SNL was funnier in my day" comes from how TV used to be watched. When I was a teenager I would stay up late and watch with my sisters. On more then one occasion we wouldn't laugh during the episode but then talk about the skit so much that it became funnier in hindsight because it became an inside joke with my sisters. Also there was less content out in the world so it was more likely my friends where watching SNL. If I missed that weeks episodes, I couldn't always find them on TH-cam, I would just be out of the joke that week. My point is SNL was funnier when my friends and family watched SNL because sharing a joke with someone is funnier than laughing and a screen alone in your bedroom.
Not even close. It has to do with talent and writing. SNL has always had ups and downs. Its first few years were great. In the 80s, the show sucked for awhile after numerous big names moved on. It had a resurgence in the 90s, went downhill in the early 2000s, got better in the mid 2000s, and ever since 2013 or so has went from mediocre to borderline unwatchable. The new cast sucks and the writing is so cringey and politically charged....and very partisan. SNLs comedy used to appeal to everyone. Now, it only apoeals to a select people.
Geeze, The comments here are clearly from the youth who have no idea! I agree and have the same kinds of memories, we would say the lines for years sometimes and I still quote them now!
@Juliana __ Some people want to believe everything has somehow gotten "political now" and that's why it's bad. Truth is everything has always been political. I think the real difference is that the world was never so polarized and desperate to stay that way. It's strange. Though I'm with this comment OP - less to consume, more shared, etc.
That and saying anything "was better when i was a kid." Is usually because they were a kid. It reminds them of their youth or a better time. So they hold on to that memory as if it will be tarnished whether is it being better is true or not
@Cheecho sorry what? Self proclaimed comedy expert? Drew never said that man, he's just comentating his opnion. Even if he did say that sometime, it was probably ironic.
SNL to me is best consumed via selective clip farming on TH-cam of individual standout sketches that you then save to a playlist and preserve forever until TH-cam dies
Drew: “Now that every episode ever made is on Peacock…” Me: “Oh shit did he get sponsored by NBC?” Drew: “A streaming service I’ll stop using the moment I’m done with this video.” Me: “…Guess not”
11:09 Fun fact! I heard that the commercial for a long white beard sketch actually was a conan o’brien bit he did behind the scenes to make other writers laugh at work so no wonder that shortly after he came to SNL it became an actual sketch on the show.
It really is a jumpstart for a comedy career. If you can last a few season and make an impact, you can make something out of it. That’s why a lot of the current cast members have been in movies or have done standup since joining.

They have a week to write and practice brand new sketches with hosts that may or may not even be actors. Then you have to account for set design/costumes/etc. They are doing this on hard mode for sure, and I respect the entire production for that. Of course there will be bad sketches. Oh yeah, and Vanessa Bayer was criminally underrated for sure.
@@10DollarProductions The show sucks ...Who are we kidding ? For the past decade , “SNL” has attempted to make up for the god-awful writing by bringing in celebrities to play recurring “characters” . But even THIS strategy has failed . What’s so funny about seeing Jim Carrey doing an impression of Jim Carrey doing Joe Biden ? What’s so funny about seeing Alec Baldwin doing an impression of Alec Baldwin doing Donald Trump ? I’m old enough to remember when SNL used to cast literal sketch comedians in their sketches ! Seriously though , how many times must we be subjected to a sketch where they just tell the same joke OVER AND OVER again and call that a full sketch ? The same joke is repeated until the sketch ends ... Another tactic of the god- awful writers is to pack each sketch with the most amount of jokes possible , which oftentimes , does not allow for the satisfaction of waiting for that one perfectly timed joke or punchline . And the present cast members suffer from some of the worst comedic timing during their sketches . And don’t get me started on the incessant awkward pauses and clear signs the celebrity guest stars are reading cue cards. And these SNL writers try SO HARD to force sketches about current events ...ugh 🤢 These writers need reminding that the best and most iconic SNL sketches of all time , were ones which were just funny , without any relation to what’s going on in the world . People will remember the great sketches with good writing and good acting far longer than a bad sketch that was relevant at the time and had a celebrity in it , for the sake of having a celebrity in it. SNL sucks !
@@angelozachos8777 I disagree with the last bit, the sketches with Tina Fey as Sarah Palin are beloved by people on both sides of the political spectrum. Again, OP is right, they throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, so maybe most of their sketches on current events are bullshit, but once in a while they produce a real gem
There's a channel called "Jose" where he recaps a number of series. I think his videos are pretty good. There are probably other channels like that as well.
The people who keep repeating "This is the funniest thing SNL has done in years" are just simply doing an SNL sketch where the joke is that they repeat "This is the funniest thing SNL has done in years". It's a pretty great sketch, probably one of the funniest things SNL has done in years.
Same, as a Brazilian SNL is mostly irrelevant to me, but I know so much about it because of videos like these (and bill harder cuz he is hot and I can rewatch Barry only so many times)
That one Adam Driver skit where he’s an old man visiting his son’s school for career day kills me every time, like it actually has me in tears so like yeah modern SNL still has its hits

SNL has definitely always been the definition of hit-or-miss. Lucky for me, I have a brain disorder where I'm just as entertained by the train wreck cringe sketches as I am by the genuinely funny ones. So usually I have fun tuning in regardless.
I honestly think Cecily Strong is criminally underrated. Her girl at the party character showed how talented she is, but she is often reduced to the hot deadpan character.
@@robbiesilverwolf Yeah but she's more than just that. If they just wanted a hot character rather than a multi faceted comedian they should've hired Sommer Ray.
I don't hate new music, there's just a lot of new popular genres of music that simply aren't for me. That being said, there's still plenty of new music I like. As for movies and TV shows, I like both old and new.
I’m the same way. There’s a lot of things old and new I like. My favorite time for music (hip hop and pop) is the 2010s. I feel like music recently is too trendy trying to get onto Tik Tok like Danny said. But I find the 2000s dreadful. But it’s just my opinion. I feel how Drew said where nostalgia makes people think differently on things. I get into arguments at work with the older people about current things that are “Hip to the young kids”. I’m not even that young, I’m 23. It just bothers me people don’t give new things a chance. That being said, there’s a lot of new things I also think suck more then the old, like Star Wars, Teen Titans, every Disney remake, and more.
your videos are my melatonin. and that's not to say they're boring, I love them. Going back through and rewatching these brings me so much serotonin. Thank you for all the hours of good vibes guy
From what I understand animators are barely respected in their own animation fields. And your uncle probably worked for folks who don't even respect animation. I'm sorry for your uncle.
You know as someone from Europe who only knew SNL at its worst this is actually fascinating. I never realised how many A-class Hollywood stars started their careers on that show, let alone how many B-class actors even had a career at all simply because they could put it in their resume.
...Well yes, it was decent in the 90s, and the fake commercials were awesome. That's literally the reason why we talk about how bad it's been for 15 years.
I honestly really appreciate Drew’s constant SNL defense. There’s so much work that goes into the show and for a show that throws so much at the wall: Obviously not every episode will be good. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be funny
I agree completely! Nostalgia plays a HUGE role in how we remember past seasons. But this current cast of members is truly amazing. Im sad that some of them are almost definitely leaving. But I feel like the newer ones are also great and can guide the show. Its just that the sheer quantity of sketches they write per season is daunting. Not to mention that a lot of hosts just aren't comedic actors, so they can't help but suck the life out of some sketches.
It's honestly insane to make a whole show in a week, from writing to making sets, costume, practicing, etc, it's a miracle it works as often as it does already. A lot of cast membera have had panic attacks on the show because of how intense it is to make it.
same! i feel like people just jump on the bandwagon of hating it since it's what everyone else is doing but if they actually watched it i think they'd realize it's never as awful as they make it out to be lol
Look up how they treat their writers and you'll see why they suck nowadays. It's not worthless but definitely not as good as it was in its prime like the nineties and early aught's
Just the concept of a having a fake white beard to sarcastically express to someone that they kept you waiting had me laughing for three minutes, so I think that’s worth something
I fell into the same trap. For a time, I thought 70s and 80s SNL was better than current, 90s SNL. But that's because I was renting best-of tapes for those years. Of course the best hour of 1981 is going to beat a random episode from 1993.
There's also the cherry picking of memory. I haven't seen it last few years, but it has always had peaks and slumps. Every period should be scaled on both average and best moments, cuz there are a lotta skits that lean heavily in the "I guess you had to be there" direction. Corpsing, extended improv, silly voices, impersonations... These can really weigh down the rewatch value of any episode. And man, I have a few periods I enjoy, but after the third compilation video any one will start to really grate on me
Thank you Drew, loved your analysis of the show. I am also a big fan (watched a lot growing up in the 90s and now catch 2-3 bits a week from TH-cam) and realize it's not a perfect show, and you really summarized it's appeal and drawbacks nicely. I also have people judge me for liking SNL, so I'm glad there are other ppl out there who still root for the comedians and enjoy the ideas and laugh at the jokes. Thanks for putting this video together!
The entire concept of "Old things are better" is usually just a concept held up by people only remembering the good stuff. We never rewatch old shows that are bad cause no one remembers them.
Absolutely true. I love music and it makes me angry whenever people talk about how much BETTER music “back then” was... like no grandpa, you just can’t figure out how to find similar music on Spotify... For real though, there’s amazing art nowadays in all ways. You just have to put in a little effort to find it.
Right, like when people say "the 90s were a better time." No...you were just a kid. Remember dial up internet (if you even had that) and standard def tv?
@andrew Stockwell Holy shit, you must be pretty young if you think things like dial up internet connection are a sign that things were worse. People acted differently back then, they treated each other better. If you are too young to remember September 11th, 2001, then it is impossible for you to realize just how much America changed since that fateful day. Who gives a shit about technology, life is about human interaction and human wonder and these things are being deliberately socially engineered out of existence
This is 100% correct. Years ago I set out to watch every unedited episode of SNL, and couldn't make it even through all of Season 1. Skipping around through the show showed me exactly what Drew is saying here. It's always had funny bits, and really terrible bits. People remember the funny stuff and compare the funniest sketches of the past to the worst sketches of the current season.
Yeah, that’s generally how people judge a lot of things. We can’t really help it, I just wish people were honest about it. It’s a mix between genuine nostalgia and just how our brains are wired to compartmentalize things. We only remember the really good or really bad mostly; if we made room for everything that makes us mildy annoyed, empty, angry, bored or uncomfortable, our brains would just be filled with meaningless nonsense half the time. When someone says old cartoons are better for example, they usually don’t know that they don’t mean that. When they say it, they’re thinking of literally the best of the best diamond in the roughs. Not the 2 to 15 other shows they had to sift through and wait to end in order for Batman TAS to begin or some shit. Who the hell out here is actually quoting megababies or Godzilla and godzooky?? Same thing applies to people who say modern music is trash, the 90’s/80’s were better etc. Ask anyone who was over the age of 50 back then and they have little to report to ya, the reason it’s in such high regard has little to Do with era and more to do with the fact that you were just young and naive and the world was still new. Not tryna bum people out but part of the reason sometimes the older things hit and the newer ones don’t has little to do with those things and just do with the fact that you’re just older now, and got more shit to do and worry about. It’s easy to look back fondly at something once it sets in that it’s never coming back. That’s just a product of livin’ in the present.; what’s sticking around and what won’t literally only ever becomes clear well after it’s already happened. Being disillusioned by that sometimes is inevitable Even stuff like the simpsons, spongebob got a ton of hate back in the day by older adults, but we’re loved a lot by younger people. In 20 years, I guarantee you mfs gon be gassin’ up this era of SNL too the same way. “Today’s bullshit; tomorrow’s nostalgia”.
That last bit in your comment just sums up 90% of people talking about how bad modern SNL is. Like, have they even seen "Traffic Altercation" in Quinta Brunson's episode? Or "Lisa from Temecula" or pretty much any sketch with Pedro Pascal
Finally: someone said it. I hate that "____ was only good in [decade]". Especially music. They forgot all the crap that we waded through to hear platinum records that would stand the test of time.
when people talk about music today sucking, its referring to pop music and most of the arguments are in fact correct. Go check out Rick Beato's channel where he has a bunch of videos talking about this more intelligently than I can. Bottom line, pop music today sucks compared the 60s because the music follows a boring, repetitive pattern with the same chord progressions. It just feels emotionally empty and stiff. Pop music today uses drum machines, the beats highly quantized and all the voices are auto tuned to perfection which all takes away the human element causing it to lack feel and emotion. There is no comparison between a hit song today and the beatles, for example. Now, SNL has changed over the decades most people hate it because its not as edgy and its too politically correct. You could never have a sketch like Eddie Murphys Mister Robinson's Neighborhood from the mid 80s because white progressive liberals would lose their minds and call it racist. But hey, if you enjoy bland, politically correct humor thats not out to offend anyone, then todays SNL is the show for you. More power to you if you enjoy that. I simply don't enjoy it. I think I found 1 or 2 sketches over the last 5 years that were somewhat funny on SNL
@@JoeG2324 The thing is SNL isn’t politically correct. It just doesn’t align with your personal political beliefs. The fact you said. “White progressive liberals” makes that abundantly clear. Not making the same race related jokes they did in the 80s isn’t political correctness, it’s common sense. Why make the same jokes for over 40 years? Do you really think the show shouldn’t have changed since the 80s? Now white men are the target of a lot of jokes suddenly that’s “political correctness” but when any minorities were a target that was just a joke? The “progressive liberals” shout racism at the jokes from the 80s but the “conservative right” shout political correctness at jokes made at the expense of white people. Just admit you don’t like you or your personal political beliefs being the target of the joke and preferred it when someone else was the target, instead of claiming it’s all just political correctness. Culturally in the 80s black people were a target and SNL reflected that because that’s what they do. Culturally in the 20s white people, especially rich white men, are a target and SNL now reflects that because that’s what they do. Their comedy has always been about current events and what’s happening culturally at the time. You don’t like what’s happening culturally right now so you don’t like SNL right now. For a show that you called “ bland and not out the offend anyone” you actually should pretty offended by it.
I grew up with the Sandler, Farley, Harvey cast with Mcdonald doing the news, and while I'll always think those years were funny. ANY SEASON with Bill Hader are far and away the funniest seasons of SNL. Full Stop.
I feel this is truly insightful actually. Most people tend to exist predominantly in their own world, and so as they grow older and perceive certain media differently, rather than examining their own change and self actualization, they try and attach an air of objectivity to their new found perspectives. It is part of growing up, but damn it can be frustrating to watch people become so steeped in it that they become inscrutable
idk, one time my roommates and I realized we'd never seen any of SNL before, so we watched a couple episodes. We thought it seemed to be written pretty solely for the young gen X and elder millennial viewers. Of course there was the occasional funny bit, but overall it just seemed like it wasn't for us.
snl is lame mad t.v....its way more of a circle jerk of celebrity and less mean...its trying to be for teens and kinda a playpin for celebrities to act and feel comfortable while fulfilling their dream ..mad t.v. was for adults....went for the nutsack if you will and really did not shy away from tough topics
Lol that is so backwards. MadTV was based off of MadMAGAZINE which was edgy comedy for teens. I def preferred Mad as a teen and SNL as I got older, but neither now tbh. Does MadTV still exist even? Lol
That was the best summation of Adam Sandler ever. he is sooo likable, but not usually that funny Which also explains why the good movies he makes lean into that - like Wedding Singer or Mr Deeds
I am 100% with Drew that SNL is a crazy crucible for comedic talent. Also writing a one hour show in two days is not a recipe for success and SNL does it anyway, and sometimes REALLY hits.
I’ve only come to appreciate Bill Hader more and more. He was such a gem. Armisen, Sudeikis, Forte, and Kristen need to be appreciated as highly as the 90’s legends at this point
People need to realize that SNL is a creative incubator. It's about giving this cast the opportunity to have a TON of shots at bat and grow their comedic taste, timing, and temperament so that they can learn to sift through the shitty stuff and find the gold. And we as the audience might not benefit from each episode individually, but we benefit from the collective. This was such an awesome video, Drew - thanks for showing us that great comedy is a practice - not a product.
watching SNL just feels like tradition in my family so I’m a bit biased lol but there’s something about sitting down weekly to a likable cast, usually a decent host, jokes about politics/world events, and sometimes a sketch that hits for weeks. & it’s one of the few things in TV/film that hasn’t been taken over by greed/venture capital ruin. love this video, SNL definitely deserves nuance.

I think with Adam Sandler, it's not that he's funnier back then. It's just that his schtick was still new back then, so he's still considered as funny. But then everyone outgrew his style and his style just hasn't changed. Like hell, he still do that 'funny voice' that he always does ever since his SNL days.
Kinda. The TH-cam channel Wisecrack did a deep dive of Adam Sandler's career that really shows where he shines and where he falters. Uncut Gems is his best modern movie, The Wedding Singer is his best retro movie, Jack and Jill is arguably his worst film, and everything else falls somewhere in between. Honestly when it comes to the Sandman, I kind of just want to see him do something no one would expect. Kind of like Robin Williams' later career. Sometimes he would make an Old Dogs. Sometimes he would make World's Greatest Dad. Or One Hour Photo. I often wonder when I see the trailer for another Adam Sandler Netflix movie what would have happened if he played The Bear Jew in Inglorious Bastards.
Adam's songs were really funny and his best contributions to SNL. So much so that when Jimmy Fallon came on and started doing songs during update we got really excited about it even though his weren't nearly as good lol.
@@ImmortalBroken Seriously. They even poked fun of the fact that Jimmy Fallon was literally just using Sandler's old playbook by having him parody Sandler multiple times and then having both of them duet in a song about laughing during sketches.
Hi all!! Old person here. Did you all know that Adam Sandler had a comedy album (like a CD) back in the day? He sure did. I was maybe 14. It was called What the Hell Happened to Me? I remember loving that thing. I wonder if it's any good now. This video has inspired me to go find out. I remember it had songs & a skit making fun of the movie Carrie (original 70s? version) where he just kept saying "they're all gonna laugh at you" over & over. This is going to be fun. Thanks Drew and original poster for reminding me of this. I am old and increasingly forgetful. I also write really long comments.
@@stacin821 Hi Stacy. I did know about that comedy album. Back when it was first released my mom would subscribe to a CD delivery service, take advantage of the buy 6 get 1 sales that they had, and cancel the account after so they might send another deal our way later. One of the CDs she purchased was Adam's comedy album. I liked his movies so she thought that I might like it. Unfortunately for me, she listened to it before I could and told me, "You're too young to listen to this. He cusses way too much."

How people look at snl is how people look at vine. Now that vine is gone we think it’s some amazing content but in all reality we only think that because we only remember the good stuff through the youtube compilations but if you had the app back then it was just a mess of unfunny lele pons with a few gems
i disagree with the vine thing. i remember enjoying %90 of the content back then, sure, there were some really embarrassing people and content were there, but even that was ok because everything was original and people weren't trying to be funny and horribly failing at it (removing sone exceptions of that) there was no pushiness, just fun. also it was the comedy sense we had back then, now it's old but gold. so looking at all the fakeness and cringeness and the absolutely disgusting thing that brings this horrendeousness to us called tiktok now, vine seems like a legendary thing.
It's young comics testing out new humor. It fails a lot, as experiments do. But one great sketch can make an episode worthwhile, and every season has had it's standout sketches and performers.
If I’m not mistaken, the nude beach sketch was made because the FCC had just started to allow the word “penis” on television, so the goal obviously to say it as much as possible

Great to see this through a young person's perspective. I'm 59, and watched most of the shows from about 1977-1983 live, with 1975-76 caught up in re-runs. As you observe, those first two seasons were really touch-and-go. Steve Martin was unimaginably huge, and the show's catch phrases used to sell t-shirts the following week. The original cast (Akroyd, Belushi, Curtain, Radnor, Chase) were really ground-breaking comics, with the humor National Lampoon/Second City improv. The Weekend Update segments were water cooler discussions every Monday at school or the office. For extra stuff like "Mr. Bill" and other film shorts, Franken & Davis bits, etc., there were moments where, as the old saying goes, "you really had to be there". The musical guest appearances were often really big events breaking new music. Hosts also seemed to try harder than they do today, when it somehow feels as though they feel entitled to just go through the motions. I remember when the show really started slipping, and then didn't watch in college as I usually had better things to do on Saturday nights. When I started working in 1987-97, I started watching again, and that's when Carvey, M. Meyers, Dunn, Hartman, Hooks, Jackso, Lovitz, Miller, and Nealon really took cues from what Letterman was doing and what The Simpsons were starting to do and really ran with it; the vibe was more The Groundlings, and it was clear that everyone was always looking for how to leverage the SNL gig into the movies. The commercial parodies produced in this era were unmatched in their quality. Man, this era had some bits that *still* make me laugh out loud: Massive Headwound Harry Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer The Sinatra Group Cluckin' Chicken Colon Blow Big Red Happy Fun Ball I also disagree with you, in that I think Smigel's "Saturday TV Funhouse" animation pieces were genius. By the late 1990s, despite some sparkle from Farley, Spade, Sandler, MacDonald, Meadows, et al., the show was slipping again, and as my wife and I had started having kids, I lost interest. With the advent of TH-cam, I think I've caught up on the 2010s and 2020s, and I have to say that the likes of Strong, McKinnon, Fey, Wigg, Armisen, S. Meyers, Thomson, and Hader cranked out some sketches that were funnier than anything that had ever been on the show. The writing was just much better. The biggest "grumpy old guy" observation I'd make is that "breaking" went from something seen as unprofessional to something that just happens all the time, which I find *really* annoying. I think, all things considered, the show has remained remarkably relevant for half a century. Again, I really enjoyed your recap, and learned quite a bit.
@Felix Kjellberg congrats on reiterating the point of the video. But what you missed is that he is specifically talking about one particular person who is underrated even within the context of that era.
@Felix Kjellberg it feels like you watched this video with the sound off. Thank you so much for reciting the message of the video that nobody was talking about.

exactly! i don’t expect people to never criticise comedy, but as someone who has done standup and is very new to it - literally the only way to get better at it is with experience. comedians need to fail in order to grow. plus it’s just really rewarding to see comedians do well when you’ve seen them give subpar performances in the past
Is no one going to talk about, “Although Kyle doesn’t always have a huge role on the show...” and then complementing every other cast member?? Almost like he was.....cut for time. This was a perfect video Drew
Honestly, the best era of SNL for me is the 2000s cast, early, mid, and late. They felt like the best ensemble to me, and they all worked so well together. Bill Hader did this interview with Seth Meyers about a year ago and talked about how in one of their group pictures, every single person is successful today, and he is so right. The cast is filled with household names or at least recognizable faces. You've probably seen at least one movie of every one of theirs in your lifetime. They had the best impressionists, especially Bill and Kristen. It might be my nostalgia blinding, but I swear I could go back and watch a skit from that era and still die laughing.
I love listening to drew talk about anything comedy-related. You can tell he's not only passionate but also super knowledgeable about the process and history of comedy as a genre, and it's really infectious and fun to watch!
I also think Cecily Strong is criminally overlooked too. I completely agree that Beck has that great versatility and comfort on screen that makes him perfect in basically every role, but I'd say the same for Cecily. Usually her straight characters really boost the comedy of whatever sketch she's in.
"The smartest thing Adam Sandler ever did was stand in the same room as Rob Schneider, who makes everyone else seem funny by comparison" Damn. Brutal and brilliant.
im actually so glad you brought up toonsis the cat because me and my dad have had an inside joke since i was like seven where we say “toonsis look out” while someone is driving
Honestly the fact that I didn’t realize this was 40 minutes long until the very end or even check how much was left at any point is a real accomplishment for us both. Go us.
The “X used to be good, but now it sucks” argument is always hilarious to me. It’s not the show that’s changed ….. it’s you. Whether you’re more mature or your sense of humor evolved, it’s not the show. TH-cam has me enjoying SNL more and more because it’s essentially a “Best of” compilation that you can access whenever you want. I agree, A LOT of SNL sketches fall flat from all eras due to writing, performances, hosts, topical humor, old political sketches, etc. However, some are beyond timeless and still make me laugh. It’s just the nature of how the show is made and that it’s in constant flux with old talent leaving and new talent coming in.
why does drew always do something no one asked for?

Here's an observation from an old guy. That nude beach sketch where they keep saying 'penis'? The joke behind it is that it had just recently become okay to use the word 'penis' on TV so they were going to get as much mileage out of it as possible.
ok thats actually hilarious
Like when South Park found out they could say "shit" on TV, so they made a whole episode around it. 😂 I salute those who push the line to the extreme.

Lmaooo
Waw that made me feel lonely
That and saying anything "was better when i was a kid." Is usually because they were a kid. It reminds them of their youth or a better time. So they hold on to that memory as if it will be tarnished whether is it being better is true or not

Sounds pretty Conan to me.
It's crazy how many huge staple actors and comedians come out of SNL.
It's kind of a comedy institution

The purpose of SNL is to kinda throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. You remember the good stuff and forget the rest.

The show sucks ...Who are we kidding ?
And these SNL writers try SO HARD to force sketches about current events ...ugh 🤢
These writers need reminding that the best and most iconic SNL sketches of all time , were ones which were just funny , without any relation to what’s going on in the world .
“ Old thing good, new thing bad” is a thing that bothers me so much. How people blindly hate on new music, movies, shows, etc.
it’s the biggest boomer move a man can make
But how else will I let everyone know about my insecurity and on-going mid-life crisis?
What I hate most is how it can allow people to dodge valid criticism when a new installment of an existing property DOES suck.

You know as someone from Europe who only knew SNL at its worst this is actually fascinating. I never realised how many A-class Hollywood stars started their careers on that show, let alone how many B-class actors even had a career at all simply because they could put it in their resume.
That's true... Experience on the show went a long way for whatever reason and basically ensued everyone a good gig after

Every period should be scaled on both average and best moments, cuz there are a lotta skits that lean heavily in the "I guess you had to be there" direction.
Especially with music.
Every era had people say "today's music stinks... not like (select your era when you were 14 years old).
Right, like when people say "the 90s were a better time."
No...you were just a kid. Remember dial up internet (if you even had that) and standard def tv?
Nostalgia is a powerful thing
@andrew Stockwell
Holy shit, you must be pretty young if you think things like dial up internet connection are a sign that things were worse.
I'm just replying so you can see how much likes you got
Being disillusioned by that sometimes is inevitable
Even stuff like the simpsons, spongebob got a ton of hate back in the day by older adults, but we’re loved a lot by younger people.
In 20 years, I guarantee you mfs gon be gassin’ up this era of SNL too the same way.
“Today’s bullshit; tomorrow’s nostalgia”.
Someone just needs to make a season of SNL with all of the best sketches of the show’s entirety stitched together chronologically into episodes.
Plus there are songs you hated when they were out, but enjoy 20 years later when they feel nostalgic instead of overplayed.
Under Pressure
Totally! There's so much good music these days; the people who say that just don't know how to find it :/
when people talk about music today sucking, its referring to pop music and most of the arguments are in fact correct.
Full Stop.

"It seems like something a teenager would come up with" describes Adam Sandler's humor style in a nutshell.
Which also explains why he “used” to be funny his humor is what a lot of teenagers like
As a teenager "take that back, take that back right now" we have taste... Well some of us... At least a select few...
I'm a teenager myself and i don't know a single friend of mine who likes Adam sandler's humor
@@alicio0059 Well, more like 2000-2010 teenage humor. Not teens today
I would say 6-11
The point when SNL stopped being funny is whenever the person saying that sentence graduated college.
Exactly. When people have to learn how to be funny, it defeats the purpose of comedy.
idk, one time my roommates and I realized we'd never seen any of SNL before, so we watched a couple episodes.
Lol
That was the best summation of Adam Sandler ever. he is sooo likable, but not usually that funny
Which also explains why the good movies he makes lean into that - like Wedding Singer or Mr Deeds
I am 100% with Drew that SNL is a crazy crucible for comedic talent. Also writing a one hour show in two days is not a recipe for success and SNL does it anyway, and sometimes REALLY hits.

Weekend update is also very consistantly good!
@ i actually do agree with that! ill go back and watch those every once in a while cause i do find them genuinely funny and entertaining

Now that vine is gone we think it’s some amazing content but in all reality we only think that because we only remember the good stuff through the youtube compilations but if you had the app back then it was just a mess of unfunny lele pons with a few gems
and even some of the "gems" weren't even that funny either looking back.
i disagree with the vine thing. i remember enjoying %90 of the content back then, sure, there were some really embarrassing people and content were there, but even that was ok because everything was original and people weren't trying to be funny and horribly failing at it (removing sone exceptions of that) there was no pushiness, just fun. also it was the comedy sense we had back then, now it's old but gold. so looking at all the fakeness and cringeness and the absolutely disgusting thing that brings this horrendeousness to us called tiktok now, vine seems like a legendary thing.
Honestly. I went back to show my cousin some old vines and sadly I just cringed at them 😅. Of course my sense of humor has evolved but yeah agreed.
The fuck? Vine was garbage, and everyone constantly made fun of it, like people make fun of tiktok now.
I've never met anyone irl or online that has ever thought that Vibe was great. Not. One. Person.
It's young comics testing out new humor. It fails a lot, as experiments do. But one great sketch can make an episode worthwhile, and every season has had it's standout sketches and performers.

Man, this era had some bits that *still* make me laugh out loud:
Massive Headwound Harry
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer
The Sinatra Group
Cluckin' Chicken
Colon Blow
Big Red
Happy Fun Ball
I also disagree with you, in that I think Smigel's "Saturday TV Funhouse" animation pieces were genius.
So glad someone said it about Jason Sudeikis - he's a truly underrated player who was critical in holding my favorite era of SNL together.
@Felix Kjellberg congrats on reiterating the point of the video. But what you missed is that he is specifically talking about one particular person who is underrated even within the context of that era.

Also not everything has to be “good” all the time to have value. I love that it’s a place for comedians to succeed and also fail, because that’s how comedians (and humans in general) grow
exactly! i don’t expect people to never criticise comedy, but as someone who has done standup and is very new to it - literally the only way to get better at it is with experience. comedians need to fail in order to grow. plus it’s just really rewarding to see comedians do well when you’ve seen them give subpar performances in the past
