Tbh I feel like Disney having their female protagonists be “so strong they don’t need a man” has made it seem as if romantic interests makes you weaker. Idk if it’s just me but it took me the longest time to realize that liking other people doesn’t make me weak. It’s not just Disney’s fault but I see it a lot in their movies and while their intentions are great, I feel like they aren’t sending out the greatest message. Let me know what you guys think cause I’d love to hear!
@@xiuminsmarshmallow3375 i feel like the problem is how romances are executed in general, in my opinion, i consider having a partner is a big responsibility not only because of the situations you're gonna deal with that person but because of the role you're gonna have with them. it's important to keep a stable connection with that person, that way, the relationship feels trustworthy but at the same time it's pretty hard for the majority of us to even do that. if people don't want a relationship, that's fine, no need to force them but saying that they don't need anyone because they're "strong" or "independent" can be pretty annoying, because you still can be independent AND have a relationship. especially when people do this with female protagonists, just don't put "I love my partner so much" as personality trait and you're good.
I literally almost cried when Ralph was reciting the bad guy speech while falling into the volcano. Such a powerful and heartfelt moment in a Disney film
The thing about "Mother knows best" is that it's actually a really good example of how real world gaslighting works as it essentially ticks all the boxes.
Mother Gothel might be the best Disney villain of all time. Yes, I'm serious. Dudes like Scar and Jafar are fun to watch, but they lack the realness of Gothel. Gothel is THE evil stepmother. The quintessential version; the peak of the archetype.
@@trequor I disagree with including Scar in the lack of realness cathegory, Jafar can stay there although i can see someone argue otherwise about power hungry cult people and the like, but Scar is most definetly a real-life-like villain, its not really tangible to *your* personal life maybe but the megalomaniacal and power hungry tyrant that is willing to stab everyone in their backs and forsake their family, people and the overall wellbeing of everything around them just to get to the top of the game can be seen all throrough society. Be it at clubs, companies, institutions or goverments. Although i'm not going to argue for scar to take the number 1 spot in the disney villain ranking, that's an entirely different topic.
The thing about Tangled that I see as truly exceptional is how accurately and frighteningly it portrays gaslighting and manipulative, abusive familial relationships.
Just to clarify: Elsa USED TO be able to control her powers. The first few minutes of the first movie shows that. However, when she accidentally hurt Anna, that control went out of the window because she started being so scared of it and was in conflict with it growing up.
One of the best things that I found about Rapunzel and Eugene’s romance was that she intiates most of the ‘romantic’ ideas. SHE ALWAYS PULLS HIM IN FOR THE KISS
It's also realistic cause in the real world it's almost always the girls the ones with the romantic initiative, boys just sit around and wait to get romance handed to them 😂
@@zoefernandez5369 well, there’s some reasoning to that. A lot of guys I know are very self conscious. They don’t think much of themselves often. This isn’t the case for all men, but for quite a few, they don’t want to come off too strong, or like they are just after something. Because there are quite a few cases of them being displayed like that in media. There’s also that a lot of men are attracted to people they consider friends, and as such don’t want to risk losing that bond because of failed romance. This isn’t always the case, but this is how it seems to be for quite a few cases.
I just think it goes to show how great the movie is when there's still a whole lot to talk about that's easy to grasp and relate to while not even talking about the god of Disney itself.
I 100% agree with your opinions on the "romance doesn't make a female character weaker". The biggest example is, apart from Rapunzel, that futuristic shooter girl in Wreck it Ralph who married Felix.
I get the feeling Schaff isn't a fan of the films made when Walt was alive, because he described Walt as "fucked-up" in his Meet the Robinsons review (hopefully he didn't buy into the false rumors of Walt being anti-Semitic, which there's no evidence for), and he rarely talks about the films he produced.
"There's nothing wrong with having a female character fall in love, as long as you make sure they have a character outside of that love." Fucking THANK YOU.
I honestly like Big Hero 6. Yeah I understand people’s complaints about the villain but the scene where Hiro ends up leaving Baymax got me pretty emotional
YES THANK YOU I AGREE. Listen I don’t like Callahan as much as the next gal but oh my god the scene when Hiro is watching Tadashi’s tapes on Baymax got me. And Baymax’s programs getting switched out is really emotional. It’s a shame that Callahan has to shit on the movie’s reputation because I love it. And yes I remember the character’s names Schaffrillas
While Schaff has a point about Callahan being a weak twist villain, I still love Big Hero 6. Hiro's journey from cocky prodigy to him coming to terms with his brother's death is really strong.
I agree. It’s also got a lot more interesting themes and messages mixed in with the movie’s story. Much like Zootopia (which is better imo) which focuses on Prejudice, Big Hero 6 focuses on grief. Frozen doesn’t really have any overall themes, though I suppose the theme of love does play a role in the third act, but it really doesn’t have a huge impact on the story at all.
In I See the Light, Eugene brushes Rapunzel's hair out of her eyes before they're leaning in to kiss. It visually shows that he's not wanting her because of her hair, but because of who she is.
Yep! I just can’t get over how he made sure she’d have a birthday she’d never forget and in a ton of scenes you see him just admiring her as she’s excitedly watching the lanterns everywhere! And my boy was so excited to express his feelings for her, and when she noticed he felt the same way and they started singing 🥹🥰😍 Literally the only part I slightly hated was they ALMOST kissed. My favorite Disney kiss remains Pocahontas and John Smith forest kiss, if they would’ve kissed on the boat it would’ve easily knocked Pocahontas’s out
For me... I feel Tangled was easily the best of these. The way its story builds Rapunzel and Eugene without the instant love thing really works. It shows both as they slowly build a bond, it has both having big moments where they are the hero of a sort. Its animal characters are the best by a long long mile. The story between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel really goes into an area entertainment rarely trends. Gothel is easily one of the most evil charcters... she straight ganks Eugene in the back. Her real parents never say a word the whole movie and yet their emotions as parents of a lost child are PERFECTLY portrayed. Its really a beautiful movie.
I disagree; I think Zootopia's the best of these. I feel like it's the most solid of them (though Wreck-It Ralph is a VERY close second). I just found bits of Tangled a bit too stupid for my liking. Plus, Gothel's motivation is AWFUL. ("Omigosh, I'm losing my youth and beauty! My life stinks; WAAAAAHHHHH!!!")
@@artbytesia Parts of Mother Gothel's motivation were vain, yes, but it was mainly to stay alive. If she loses Rapunzel's hair, she straight up dies, which I feel is a pretty compelling motivation.
@creeperash07 No, if that were the case, then she wouldn't continually compliment her own looks or look in the mirror so much. Also, after Rapunzel's hair is cut, what's the first thing Gothel does? Is it to scream that she's going to die? Is it like how Winterbolt reacts when his scepter is shattered in Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July? Nope! It's to LOOK IN THE MIRROR, and then to PULL HER CLOAK OVER HER FACE. Those are not things a person afraid of dying would do, they're more things a bratty high-school girl obsessed with looking like on the cover of teen magazines would do. So sorry, but your argument is invalid. It is a fallacy.
@@artbytesia That makes a lot of sense. I still think Mother Gothel is a great villain, perfectly encapsulates the abusive and manipulative family member. And the vanity just makes her an even worse person.
@@creeperash07 Yeah, it's not that I find her a bad villain per se, it's just that I find a motivation like simple vanity just incredibly flimsy. But I think that mostly comes down to me not really finding looks that important.
Speaking of Tangled being the 50th Disney animated movie, Encanto is the 60th and turned out better than most other Disney movies in the 2010's, so I guess the big milestone movies work out to be great
I'd argue that Mother Knows best is a Top Tier Disney Villains song. It shows how manipulative and dark Gothel is as a villain and how she traps Rapunzel in her tower in a much more emotional way. The fact that Rapunzel had no idea Gothel kidnapped her is somehow darker than what happened with Snow White and Cinderella, who were aware their Stepmothers were evil.
One thing that I absolutely ADORE about Zootopia is that all of the characters had some form of significance to the plot. There isn’t any pointless comic relief characters or any character that could have been erased from the movie. That is a hard feat to pull off for mainstream animated movies nowadays.
I really love that about it too!! Every single character gets a chance to shine and influences the plot in some way. Clawhauser is a character you would think at first glance is just there for a few gags, but he ends up being really important-- his introduction isn't just there to make you laugh, it's to make you realize how tragic it is that the prejudice against predators has cost innocent people like him their jobs. I have tons of problems with this movie but what you pointed out is definitely a huge strength!! ^^
Rapunzel was my favorite Disney movie when I was younger for that reason. My mother was emotional manipulative/abusive and so watching Rapunzel not only leave but thrive when she left made me feel powerful after years of feeling powerless. My mother hated the movie claiming it put mothers in bad light which opened my eyes more to her behavior. So everytime I hear that song it’s like my personal “reflection” or “let it go” and it makes me love the movie even more
Gotta say, I agree with pretty much everything here but Moana didn't have the same impact the first few times I watched it. The film didn't stick around in my mind as much as Tangled or Wreck It Ralph. I'll have to watch it again with a fresh perspective.
It has a bit more going on than the recent movie (i know people like encanto, but it's very basic, and the magic powers are kinda useless since you could get the same kinda plot with its meaning, with a normal family and a family heirloom.) But overall Moana is indeed not interesting to me atleast.
I still love Zootopia, due to how creative the world feels. I didn't exactly pay attention to the real world race allegory, I just enjoyed the story, character's, and world they live in.
I 100% agree with what James said about Removing romances because it might make the female characters look weak. Just because you’re in love that doesn’t mean you’re gonna depend on your significant other for the rest of your life.
They are just trying to impress the feminists with bechdel test. And as he’s pointed out. A good romance and characters with flaws are still better than a Captain Marvel; held back girl boss story.
One of my favourites protagonists, who comes from one if my top 3 favourite fictional worlds of all time, is a great example of this. She is an extremely strong character in her own right, devoted, driven, lawful good. She's an FBI agent, and was even a competent detective before earning her badge. She has her action hero moments but she also has her more introspective moments and moments of weakness. And yet she depends on her boyfriend (eventually husband), not to protect her from danger or the bad guys (though he is very protective by nature) but more often to protect her from her own mind, and her tendency to be a workaholic. There is so much to unpack and I can't possibly summarize 18 books and 4 novellas in this comment, but Lucy Kincaid is a perfect example of a strong character who is made better, not weaker, by the man she loves. Both in universe and as a narrative entity.
@@X-35173 Hey, that's kinda like some characters I'm writing. This is kinda reassuring because I'm still not sure whether they have good chemistry or are compelling characters in general.
That level is so gorgeous. The animation was so fluid in the cutsences there. Really showed how we surpassed Toy Story 1 level graphics in video games.
The reindeer guy and Christophe had more chemistry in that one scene than him and Anna in the entire 2 movies. Don’t try and fight me you know I’m right
I liked them but not everyone is into a friends to lovers type thing. It's definitely too rushed though. After they made a point of not making it rushed. They def don't have enough chemistry though as well.
it's crazy the fact that Hans and Anna had more chemistry, even though you could picture that those things he said in "Love is an open door" were nothing but lies. maybe, I'm not sure but because of the plot twist (as much as dumb that it is) i could imagine him doing those acts to manipulate Anna.
@@nicoleflores2054 yeah you're completely right! I agree! Love is an open door is a 10x better romance song and Fixer Upper is awkward and bad even in the movie.
*Tangled* has banger of music that is actually relevant to the plot, good story, memorable characters, Mother Gothel and that one sequence at Snuggly Duckling Pub, *100/10. Best movie.*
I agree with Schaffrillas that it doesn’t do anything super out-there or anything, but it does the role of being a Disney princess film so seamlessly and with absolute perfection. Pretty much every scene is as close to perfect as possible.
Did anyone else felt old when seeing that Encanto was the 60th animated feature film and remembering seeing the same thing with Tangled but being the 50th? Like, dude, that hit me hard
I am pretty sure I cried at this part and I rarely cry when watching movies specially animated ones but I cried at this movie twice, that's why it's my favourite Disney movie.
Same! Already bad enough my other favorite Disney couple Pocahontas and John Smith didn’t get a happily ever after, but then it almost happened to my other favorite Disney couple! Flynn did a ton to make sure her birthday was the most beautiful and magical day ever for her, and I just love how he KNOWS he wants her more than anything and doesn’t care at all about the crown anymore. The part he’s keeps taking her hair off his wound to show he is NOT ok at all with her remaining Gothel’s walking pharmacy let alone losing her forever is so 🥹😭 especially when he says “You were my new dream” 😭😭😭
The original A.A Milne’s Winnie the Pooh is actually quite emotional. You go on the journey of Tiger’s mental health, Eeyore’s depression and how he finds positivity in seeing the simple things in life, Piglet’s insecurities about friendships, Pooh’s insecurities as a whole that are pretty similar to insecurities we would have as children (loneliness, mental isolation, friendship problems, obsession towards unhealthy things) but most of all it’s Christopher Robin which is the really sad story here. We realise at the end that he made up a world in his mind to hide away from the fact he doesn’t want to grow up, see his family separate, and go to boarding school separated from his family. We realise that in the end- he can’t be a child forever, he has to let his friendships with Pooh and the gang go- but that the memories live on. That’s what makes Winnie the Pooh a timeless classic. You realise as you age that the characters Christopher Robin makes up are all mini personas of his insecurities and that it’s a tale about growing up while tackling the struggles of that crucial part of life. To me- the story is one of the most moving in child literature history
The romance in tangled is AMAZING! They didn’t just randomly through it in at the end for convenience. They truly built something, it was and always will be amazing.
I would call Tangled the last "true" Disney movie. Meaning that is embraced the tropes that made Disney so great to begin with. Though I still believe that Moana is the last great Disney movie.
@@LamisonJamison When was that ever said? Not trying to be rude, I've just never seen that confirmed anywhere. I also always though Eugene was more around 20-22, but that was just my guess.
Best scene in Tangled: Before the lanterns, it goes to Rapunzel's parents. Silent. Grief stricken. The father tears up, and its the mother that comforts him. It's typically the other way around. Any man who's been taught all his life to never cry probably lost it at that point. I know I did.
@@mycycleminoritiesprobably for the best in more ways than one. Clancy Brown (the dad’s voice in the show) would have probably ruined the moment if he spoke in that movie!
It’s actually halarious how Schaf notices the character assassination in Ralph Breaks The Internet but doesn’t in Toy Story 4 when it’s so blantantly obvious. I’m never forgiving you for that Schaf.
You put into words exactly on how I feel Disney has been approaching romance...as in, they basically ignore it now because they are afraid of criticism. But romance doesn't make a character weak or shallow if they have other emotions, goals, and characteristics. I miss having their characters having some romance. I feel Tangled was the last to do it right. Frozen's felt tacked on snd they pretty much took it out of all the newer films.
I have seen so much anime and young adult stories that it's starting to become weird if the main male lead and the main female lead don't fall in love lol.
Yeah. Either make the romance well-developed/the main story, or don’t have it. Don’t throw in a half-baked romance in last minute just because you feel you’re forced to.
There's a lot in Tangled that you didn't pick up on! You talk about how well they portray Moana's struggle with imposter syndrome and her greatest strength being her empathy, and you totally overlooked the same mechanisms at work in Tangled. In "mother knows best", they're setting up a super realistic example of real abusive, gaslighting behaviour. You read this as "slow and clunky" and got close with the idea that the tone is unusual, but you completely missed the mark. In the scene where Rapunzel is flipping back and forth between ecstatic and anxious, that's very true to life for victims in her situation. Not only is the romance one of the most captivating that Disney has pulled off -- as you describe -- but the entire plot of Rapunzel's mother being emotionally manipulative is super well done and true to life. Also, and this is my bias talking, it's incredibly validating as a kid to see an evil family member, to recognise abusive behaviour in media and know you're not imagining it, which is of course what the gaslighter tries so hard to convince you. It was really life-changing for a lot of people, and I know myself it's been a comfort film since the day I first saw it. Wreck it Ralph is good but depicting an abusive relationship between a parent and a child? That's groundbreaking. For some, it really is a revolutionary moment in film history and just wanted to show you how wrong you are when you describe it as "nothing groundbreaking". There's a great video by CinemaTherapy about the 11 signs of gaslighting in this film that explains it really well, if you wanna check that out.
honestly, same 😭 tangled was the reason i started validating my feelings about my parents not having my best interests in mind. it came after i got into high school and my parents started to treat me differently because i was struggling to pass my classes no matter how hard i tried and felt like i wasn't good enough. felt like i was walking on eggshells with them most of the time. seeing rapunzel, not only a protagonist who shares the same struggles as me but a passionate and starry-eyed artist as well, was such a big inspiration for me as a kid 💖 she's easily my favorite disney princess just from how much i connect with her so much. also that cinematherapy video made me cry a lot, man 😭
I completely agree, it’s a great example of balancing romance, wonder and realistic trauma. Tangled gets better and better after every rewatch and as we get older because we start to recognise all the small details the writers and animators included
I have a rocky relationship with my mom (I mean she told me I ruined Christmas today soooo) and seeing the mom being nice, but then also mean really validated me as well. My mom put me in weight watchers as a 12 year old and told me I needed to lose weight all the time, but then would turn around and tell me im pretty?? So seeing her "just teasing" thing really showed me how wrong my own mom was.

I love how James just tries his best not to mention Tamatoa when talking about Moana, and even baits us at the end when he announces his favourite songs from the movie
Honestly, I would place Dwayne Johnson’s performance as Maui just below Robin Williams’ performance of Genie as Disney’s greatest larger-than-life characters. He brought so much character and charisma to the movie.
My favorite D"TR"J performances have been comedic, he's great at it. He's so expressive with both his voice and his face that he's wasted in something like an action movie. He's like the opposite of Vin Diesel while somehow being exactly the same.

Like, okay, Touch the Sky is a perfect song for all those driving moments plus the story is memorable (mainly thanks to Mor'Du) but since its a younger movie it didn't have enough time to settle deep in me like Pocahontas, Aladdin or Lion King.
i feel like a big part of why Moana is such an amazing protagonist is just the girl who voices her, Auli'i is probably one of the best casting decisions that Disney has ever made, she fits Moana so incredibly well. I've watched those videos that compare the voices of the princesses through different languages, and Moana is the ONLY one where I consistently see people rank the English voice as the #1 voice
@@subifyouhatetiktokandreddit234 I wouldn't call them "random" dubs, and you shouldn't understate the talents of people who speak other languages. Idina Menzel wasn't even in the top 10 for quite a few of the Elsa ranking videos that I watched.
yeah, mother gothel is a really good villain when you change your perspective a bit. She's an excellent antagonist in THIS movie specifically because of how she preys on rapunzel's naivety and turns it into a weakness, keeping her in the tower by sheer emotional manipulation and gaslighting. The worst part about it is how accepting rapunzel is of this behavior, which is how real victims of abuse deal with a relationship like that- through normalizing and accepting it as something thats good for them. Later in the film rapunzel's naivety turns into a strength because of how she charms people with her enthusiasm, but mother gothel always has that strangle-hold on her until the end when she's finally confronted. I thought schafrillas wouldve liked mother gothel because of how realistically they portray a relationship between an abuser and their victim, but shes certainly not as grandiose as other disney villains (which doesnt make her any less good of a villain imo).
The thing I love most about moana that he hadn't mentioned was how Disney actually did research into Polynesian culture and not just focus on one country like Hawaii like lilo and stitch but pulling from a variety of pacific islands and that there's an actor/actress representing diff pacific islands dwayne:samoa, temuera and jemaine:both modern nz and maori culture and also auli'i being Hawaiian. I love how Disney is using actors of the actual ethnicity they're animating but also not being overly abnoxious about representing a culture and still having a story. As a Polynesian myself I loved seeing this in moana.
I just gotta say: the editing in the Ralph Breaks the Internet segment is exactly what made me fall in love with your old videos and I'd love some more please and thank you
I personally LOVE mother knows best. It added to how manipulating Gothel was, disguising manipulation with the title of "mother". Oh yeah, and the song is a bop
It's a good song for all the reasons you described and it's apparently very accurate to abusive relationships. But "Into the Woods" did it first with other songs and did it so much better.
The song is pretty good on its own but really becomes astounding in the reprise later on. I loved how theatrical it all felt with the use of lighting and the movements of the characters even matching the beat. Makes for an excellent scene
@@theflickchick9850 So what if something else did something first… Snow White did the entire princess thing first. Does that mean tangled can’t also do it and still be amazing? Plus, into the woods sucked.
Wreck it Ralph made me cry twice. One was of course where you mentioned, but the beginning also got me. I related too hard when Ralph was going through his "All I want to do is fit in but they won't make room because of something I can't control"
I'd actually get into like, a heated debate about Frozen Heart being a bad song. It's the only song in the two movies that actually makes sense to be diegetic, and paints an idea of ice as this strange, mythically powerful thing - it's not just she has ice magic, it's the people of Earendel *actively fear ice magic*. Also it feels like something that would've been in the original story where Else was a ruthless queen villain and that's pretty cool.
i completely agree with this, but i feel like it's just out of place. if all the other songs were more like frozen heart, i would absolutely love it as an opener. show yourself is sadly the only one that even comes close to that mystical, foresty sound that frozen heart has.
I honestly love the song frozen heart and do know all the lyrics (there's a whole lotta foreshadowing there) but it's naturally not gonna be as memorable, especially with the little kids watching the movie
I was literally coming down to comment specifically on this, that this song is actually my favorite from Frozen, I love the traditional sound as well as the way they are describing ice and making the story more foreboding. However it is very misleading, as the movie is not nearly as foreboding as this song haha. Interesting how they kinda tried this again in the second movie with the river song, and succeeded better.
Father of 9 girls here. My 2 yr old has been on a frozen, frozen2, Moana, and Tangled binge lately. Love em all but Tangled takes the top for this dad. Very interesting the whole movie and terrific music. My only question- how did Eugene and Maximus fall like 600 feet with no damage?? 😂 That part always gets me
I used to feel the same way about Mother Knows Best until I talked to women who had abusive mothers who said it was perfectly written for a narcissist mom
In big hero 6, I actually really like Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Gogo, and Fred (I even remember all their names). They’re all just very likable. Also, to counter the only thing you said in this video I don’t agree with: Wasabi is a clean freak, Gogo is a rebel who likes motorcycles and driving, Honey Lemon is very bouncy and charming, and Fred is just vibing. There. Those are their personality traits.
Exactly! I like big hero six, and I’ve seen it two or three times (but not in a few years) and I even remembered all of that! I don’t get how Big Hero 6 wasn’t memorable to him
I think why I find Mother Gothel to be a really great villain is that this person pretty much exists irl, it portrays how she gaslights and manipulates Rapunzel so well and I think alot of those who like this movie also kinda feels like they know a real Mother Gothel irl *cough* my real mother *cough* *cough*
She's one of the great villains! That quote after she stabs Flynn "Now look what you've done Rapunzel" always gives me the chills, I'm surprised Rapunzel didn't have any psychological issues because she loved Mother Gothel, as seen when Gothel fell out of the tower and Rapunzel reached out her hands. At in the cases of Cinderella and Snow White, they knew that their stepmothers hated them.
I remember there being a darkly humorous Frozen theory that I ended up liking a lot, even though it made no sense. Okay, so at one point in the Rock Troll - song, the rock trolls finally shut up enough that Anna and Kristoff can explain she has a fiancé. And the rock trolls react to that by singing that they just need to "get the fiancé out of the way and the problem will be fixed", because they're terrible. Some fans then jokingly theorized that they meant that literally and put some kind of spell on Hans that made him act on his worst impulses and desires, while his true self was trapped in his cursed body screaming for someone to notcie this wasn't him. It's a theory that would probably fall apart under five seconds of scrutiny, but I've alwas liked it because it gave a somewhat entertaining explanation for Hans' sudden 180° and it made the rock trolls the real villains, which, yeah, screw them.
@@layy4358 Right?! They literally have more chemistry in the .02 minutes they were on screen together than Anna and Kristoff did in both movies combined
@TheKitKatLizard EXACTLY. they had chemistry in the first film but actually it’s a little toxic, kristoff cares so deeply about anna, but no matter what anna will always choose elsa above all.
I love how little every time Schaffrillas says “can you even name ___ from this movie?” I always can. The big hero 6 girls names are honey lemon and gogo and frozen heart was one of my favorite songs in frozen
The worst part of Moana is how at the end, instead of putting a flat rock on that one tower, she puts a conch shell. She isn’t taking into account how inconvenient that will be for the next ruler’s rock placement

I do think zootopia is a better commentary on implicit bias as a concept rather than race relations. While the two are very related and tied to one another I just don’t think zootopia’s messaging when applied to racism makes much sense, but when applied to implicit bias it hits the nail on the head constantly.
Super good point. Thanks for pointing this out. I love Zootopia and still felt like it had good things to say despite understanding the critiques of the analogy, but couldn't put a finger on WHAT worked and how to explain why it still worked for me
I don't think Zootopia is supposed to be about race directly, I think they we're going for a broader mishmash of prejudices including sexism and nationalism as well
YESSSS. If you guys wanna know more about implicit bias in Zootopia, you guys should watch Cinema Therapy's take in it! It explains everything so well!
best part of BH-6 is the exquisite dialogue. " What would mom and dad say?" "I don't know. They're gone. They died when I was three, remember?" why the fuck would a sibling ever have to remind another sibling about the death of their parents?
Fun fact: tangled was actually the first princess movie to be rated PG for “brief mild violence” At least that’s what I heard. I could be wrong but anyways, the more you know
thats fair, but i mean, hes still ranking the movies on their own. the cartoon series' merits are its own, but it doesn't necessarily give plus points to its original movie
it kinda feels like revisionist history to say that tangled is underrated. rapunzel is definitely a top 5 disney princess, no one can deny that. i would save the “underrated” label for movies like emperor’s new groove.
What makes Calhoun an even worse villain is his daughter willingly agreed to be a part of the teleportation experiment regardless of how dangerous it was. If anything, he’s mad at her for her decision than anything. I haven’t watched Big Hero 6 in forever, so idk if they ever address it, but if they didn’t it would’ve been nice if the characters brought that up and just immediately demolish his motivation.
Fun fact: My brother went to a test screening of Zootopia in 2015 and wrote 2 pages worth of criticism on the nudist animal scene when asked about his thoughts on the movie. Disney reeeeeally wanted that scene in the movie huh

I will defend "Frozen Heart" (the ice-cutting song) because I think what is does for Frozen is similar to what "Fathoms Below" does in The Little Mermaid. Both open their respective movies, and while neither are exceedingly memorable compared to other songs in their movies or sung by any of the main characters, both songs lay the atmospheres and tones for their movies. Actually, upon looking up the history of the song, "Frozen Heart" IS in-part inspired by "Fathoms Below," so it's not just my interpretation! The last thing I will say is I remember sitting in the theater to see Frozen (I was 18, mind you, so it's not like I was an easy-to-please child), and when the movie started with the ice-cutting song, it gave me a real sense of that old-school Disney magic that I hadn't felt for a while, and it genuinely pumped me up for the movie.
i was the same way when i went to see it in theaters. i was around 14 when it came out and that opening immediately reignited my love for disney movies. then i went back to see it like five more times, lol
I loved Frozen Heart cause it told you the whole plot of Frozen without telling you. "Beware the frozen heart" ment 3 different things, Elsa keeping to herself, Anna's literally frozen heart, and Hans the hidden frozen heart
actually the vibe frozen heart gives is much more different from the rest of the movie. frozen heart is more authentic and sets up a mystical vibe that is very fitting with the whole scandinavian setting. the rest are just pop songs aimed for top 40, which is disappointing bc i was expecting a very different movie from that opening
why tangled is my favourite disney movie is because it’s an adventure romance movie. it keeps it close and personal by not introducing too many places and people, but enough for the world to feel real. eugene and rapunzel are never in the same place for too long (except in the tower in the beginning) so it feels perpetually moving. i love tangled with my entire heart
Fun fact: You didn’t give an actual rating for Ralph Breaks The Internet in your official review, so we did actually get some worth from you talking about it again
Have you ever noticed how much 2010s Disney loved family members getting trapped in other dimensions/planets? Callaghan's daughter, Ford Pines, Della Duck, Janet Van Dyne, Moon Butterfly...the list goes on!
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 And almost all of them followed a similar formula: daring adventurous family member decides to take a wild risk, more cautious member has an "it should have been me. I told them no. But they wouldn't listen! They were gone, and it was all my fault" moment. And the more cautious family member is almost always the one to rescue them because "it's my fault they're gone. I need to be the one to bring them back.", or some variation of it.
Not to mention Amphibia and The Owl House, which both are built around the fact that the main character is ALSO trapped in another dimension... Real original, Disney. (ignore my pfp lmao)
@@etra9590 She was! And although the moon is a planetoid and not another dimension, it follows the guidelines I made in a reply comment, so I count it.
Moana was the movie that broke me, when her grandmother passed and was reborn as a manga ray, that reminded me of my grandmother and when she passed and her love for animals and her idea of never being gone and just being in a different form. It was such an experience.
When Penelope screams when Ralph actually breaks her cart is one of the most rawest screams I've ever heard. I felt that to my core. And most of all, I relate. I've also had something very precious to me broken before my very eyes.
I legitimately watched that movie on repeat back in middle & high school and my heart would twist EVERY SINGLE TIME that scene came around . Vanellope’s pleas and Ralph’s grim determination to keep her safe was brutal asf
You talk about Tangled, and not mention the silent scene of Rapunzel's parents before the lanterns are lit? Don't get me wrong, I agree with just about everything you had to say. But that scene just kills me every time I see it. Wreck-it Ralph may make me tear up on 3 separate occasions, so it wins out. But the sorrow and near brokenness on the king's face always tugs at my heart strings. He even leans into the queen's hand as she tries to comfort him. It's just beautiful visual storytelling. edit: I also just learned that their names are King Frederic and Queen Arianna.
Everyone has a different experience. He might like Moana and Wreck it Ralph better because of his way to seeing life. Tangled will be always my top 1 because of how I can relate to many things there, it cut deep in me.
One thing that stuck out to me about Frozen 2 above all else was actually that Olaf scene where he realized that he was upset. He realized that he isn't just a one-dimensional character meant solely to be cheerful. He realized he had a right to express negative emotion. When your target audience is a demographic who is expected to be quiet and never angry, something like that is powerful. It's something kids need to see, and I'm so glad it got included. (Plus, anger in general is so demonized.)
Tangled's romantic scenes, especially the lantern one, were the most romantic animated scenes I have ever seen that actually made me feel really jealous and singled out.
I agree its the most beautiful, magical and romantic scene ever Disney or otherwise has ever created. I can’t see Disney actually trumping it either. My boy Flynn went all out to make sure she’d have a birthday she’d never forget! I just love how he’s been in love with her all day and is so excited to show his feelings for her by singing, “sorry boys, I don’t sing” and the dude has the voice of an angel. Honestly the only part that made this scene imperfect by like 1>% is they ALMOST kissed 😫😠 COME ON. My favorite Disney kiss is the first kiss with Pocahontas and John Smith, but if Rapunzel and Flynn would’ve kissed on the boat it would’ve easily knocked Pocahontas’s out
I in fact DO have the cutting ice song memorized, and also it’s called “Frozen Heart”. However, the only reason I have it memorized is because the males in my jazz choir had to sing it for a Frozen Medley. So yeah, certified Frozen Heart expert here.
I'm also one of the few people who remembers Frozen Heart. But even then I don't include it in my holiday playlists. I also remember seeing several guys, including my acting teacher, sing the song in two different programs during 2014-15. One was a Christmas show and the other was a free (with non-perishable food donation) winter-themed concert in February. Both times it was part of a Frozen set. I'm just glad Fixer Upper wasn't in either 😅
@@FragglevisionReturns The song and the sequence accompanying it just give a slightly masculine vibe, which is weird in a animated film like Frozen. Hence why I dig it
I get that it’s just an opinion, but “the cutting ice song” aka Frozen Heart/Hjertefrost is actually based on Norwegian folk song and is a fucking bop. Most Norwegians would agree that that’s a cool song and that it’s great they added some Norwegian folk song in this movie that takes place in Norway. The soundtrack and the instrumentals in frozen also resemble it or go back and use parts of it again and again so it’s kind of important that that’s the intro song so it’s reminiscent again through the movie. Shame you don’t like it, because I’ve always thought it was super cool they had music that resembled Norwegian folk music :/
Agree, Frozen Heart is not supposed to be a song to enjoy and sing, it’s purpose is to set the tone. It serves to the movie and story, not to the soundtrack disc.
Honestly, I just like that it's a song they sing in line with their work, and while it's not the movie's best song I still think about that rhythm... probably more than any other song in the movie.
I think Professor Callaghan was supposed to be showing how irrational people can get when hurt immensely by grief. I watched Big Hero 6 first when I was still grieving my Uncle and I related to it really hard, haha.

Tbh I feel like Disney having their female protagonists be “so strong they don’t need a man” has made it seem as if romantic interests makes you weaker. Idk if it’s just me but it took me the longest time to realize that liking other people doesn’t make me weak.

YES THANK YOU I AGREE. Listen I don’t like Callahan as much as the next gal but oh my god the scene when Hiro is watching Tadashi’s tapes on Baymax got me. Yeah! I also love this movie, it's funny, and emotional and the action it's great!

It's not bad, but I'd be a lot greater if she wasn't just Frollo again but weaker

Ditto, my man. Ditto.
Same, its a good movie but its not anything that special
It has a bit more going on than the recent movie (i know people like encanto, but it's very basic, and the magic powers are kinda useless since you could get the same kinda plot with its meaning, with a normal family and a family heirloom.) But overall Moana is indeed not interesting to me atleast.
Moana just has too much of the typical Disney formula…like yeah so did Tangled but at least tangled came first and it was more effective back then
Moana is great but it drags quite a bit in the 2nd half but the ending us fantastic
I still love Zootopia, due to how creative the world feels. I didn't exactly pay attention to the real world race allegory, I just enjoyed the story, character's, and world they live in.
Agreed, the dynamic between Judy and Nick is just ON POINT!

Its definitely my favorite Disney movie. Not counting pixar.

Best scene in Tangled: Before the lanterns, it goes to Rapunzel's parents. Silent. Grief stricken. The father tears up, and its the mother that comforts him. It's typically the other way around. Any man who's been taught all his life to never cry probably lost it at that point. I know I did.
I like how expressive her parents are even though they never speak. I never even realized they didn't talk until my later viewings, crazy.
@@mycycleminoritiesprobably for the best in more ways than one. Clancy Brown (the dad’s voice in the show) would have probably ruined the moment if he spoke in that movie!

@AlexFenra okay. I trust you.
@@RGC_animation those are always poorly done imo

Yeah. Either make the romance well-developed/the main story, or don’t have it. Don’t throw in a half-baked romance in last minute just because you feel you’re forced to.
Well they had Dolores get together with Mariano in Encanto. Maybe they're working back towards it
There's a lot in Tangled that you didn't pick up on!
Tangled gets better and better after every rewatch and as we get older because we start to recognise all the small details the writers and animators included

yeah, mother gothel is a really good villain when you change your perspective a bit.
@@pokaay3163 Aaand she also dumped her own daughter for Rapunzel.

That was the only song I liked throughout the movie since it sounded enchanting.
Wait, isn't it called Arendelle?
I was literally coming down to comment specifically on this, that this song is actually my favorite from Frozen, I love the traditional sound as well as the way they are describing ice and making the story more foreboding. However it is very misleading, as the movie is not nearly as foreboding as this song haha. Interesting how they kinda tried this again in the second movie with the river song, and succeeded better.

Ugh finally someone rightfully recognizes Wreck-It-Ralph as the amazing movie that it is. Nobody ever talks about how good this movie is!
the movie is just amazing, had such a good time watching it in theaters.
Let's be real, the "cutting ice song" from Frozen is just Look Down from Les Mis but with ice and without any plot relevance.
Maybe. But at least when I hear it I don’t want to rip my hair out in frustration because of how much I’ve heard it played to death.
Not relevant... but gives foreshadowing anyways.
I always thought it sets the stage nicely and establishes Elsa's ice powers as a mysterious, mythical force.
okay but the vibe is immaculate
Yeah but it still fucking slaps 👌🏼
Tangled's romantic scenes, especially the lantern one, were the most romantic animated scenes I have ever seen that actually made me feel really jealous and singled out.
I agree its the most beautiful,
magical and romantic scene ever Disney or otherwise has ever created. My favorite Disney kiss is the first kiss with Pocahontas and John Smith, but if Rapunzel and Flynn would’ve kissed on the boat it would’ve easily knocked Pocahontas’s out
Yes. It's beautiful ❤️
I always feel so lonely at that part 😭 But in a good way
Definitely a Diwali reference.
I can’t believe a lot of critics hated that song… it’s an absolutely gorgeous and heartwarming scene and tune. I want to be there

I in fact DO have the cutting ice song memorized, and also it’s called “Frozen Heart”. However, the only reason I have it memorized is because the males in my jazz choir had to sing it for a Frozen Medley. So yeah, certified Frozen Heart expert here.
I remember cause the men are hot

Just like mr.schaff
I know nothing about Norway folk song, but it just sounds nice, even if I don't remember the lyrics.
Honestly, I just like that it's a song they sing in line with their work, and while it's not the movie's best song I still think about that rhythm... probably more than any other song in the movie.
Wow I didn't know that, thanks for the info. 👍
Cool no pun
Schaff: “yes I watched the series, it’s pretty good, Varian is the best character”

I think Professor Callaghan was supposed to be showing how irrational people can get when hurt immensely by grief. I watched Big Hero 6 first when I was still grieving my Uncle and I related to it really hard, haha.
